Vista was rapidly just Windows 7. A lot of the hate is based on the memory of the early release. And that was impacted by other factors unrelated to how good Vista actually was.
Nope I used Vista on my brand new Asus A8JS, it was a beastly 14" laptop slightly more powerful than Xbox 360. Vista made it bogged down in the most basic tasks like file copy and paste and opening programs from cold load. It got faster at certain points with pre loaded programs in my maxed out 4gb of RAM. Vista made my powerful laptop feel like molasses. Then one day I was invited to get Windows 7 RTM from MSDN. I installed that thing as fast I could off load my data on the old install. Win 7 RTM made the A8JS utterly fly with glass graphics features on and my favorite gadgets running in the background. It was multi tasking as fast I could think, it was wonderful. That's how horrible Vista was.
Young people will never know patience. Old tech forced us to be patient. There was once a time when you had to let you computer take hours to install Windows, wait a half hour to copy a CD, and wait minutes just for an image on the Internet to load. You didn't have to worry about "screen time" back when the technology was regularly forcing you into taking breaks.
Then you get to other devices like the ps1 and ps2 which would often fail to register the disc inside which was fixed by removing the disc, breathing on it, then wiping the breath away with your shirt XD.... Perfect, that'll work now :D
When I was a kid I pirated Grand Theft Auto 2 from my friend. It took something ridiculous like 30 floppies and I don't even want to guess how long to zip, copy and unzip all of that. I had to cycle back to his place twice because a floppy had a crc error. You had to work hard for your illegal media back then.
I'll never forget going to the midnight release of Marvel vs Capcom 3 and then going home and beating my cousin so bad that I had an 80 game win streak and he quit fighting games forever.
i remember the excitement too. especcially from people who really got Win ME. who could already worked with NT. i started with Windows 3.1 and in Computer Classes we learned these fucking DOS commands.
A cd case is actually not a normal design. If you have never seen one, of any kind, they are asymmetric in design which does not make opening obvious. We all know, because the design language was just known as how it works not because its completely obvious. They kind of made it worse for him, because although that is where his confusion came from, it looked worse because he was trying to not break it - if he didn't care, he probably would have just pulled hard randomly and opened it in seconds.
The reason you still had to use the CD to use a program / game was so you couldnt give them to your friends for free😁 Back in the days when a friend bought a game the first thing you would ask is "does it need a CD to play?" and if didnt need one, you would borrow the game from your friend to install it on your computer for free 😁
I think we can only say windows xp was slow because we've experienced faster computers, but for that time it wasn't that bad since we had nothing to compare it to.
re: cd needed to use the program - it was more for copy protection than hard drive space - the majority of people had more than enough space on their drive.. copy protection made it so you couldnt use the app if you didnt own the actual disc.. putting the disc in verified you owned it.. sometimes you could get away with pulling it out again after getting the app started.. personally, i just ripped the cd to my hard drive and then when it asked for the disc i would load the rip into a virtual drive to make it work. but getting around that sort of thing was easier back then.. now it doesnt matter cause its all internet based verification.
