youre a great streamer to watch! You don’t complain about chat incessantly, you explain what’s happening, you don’t get overly upset... hope to catch your future streams!
No joke. I legitimately thought as a kid that intimidating a wild encounter by sending out a scarier one increased your chance of catching it. I also thought that _that_ was why legendary Pokémon were so much harder to catch than regular ones.
I've just started practising running Red Any% Glitchless No Save Corruption for my first speedrun thanks to you Shen. Watching you perform the number of manips AND perfect balls you did in one run AND mostly in a row is incredible now that I know what it's like. Great play. Can't wait to see what's next!
This run made me realize how little sense it makes that a mansion be filled with fire horses, fire foxes, huge piles of goo, toxic gas bois and fire ducks (magmar). Heck, that mansion is horrifying.
Awesome run and engaging commentary. Love watching you and other oldgen Pokémon runners dismantle these games. Congrats on your record and nice work on the strats.
You’re really cool and funny. Never knew you before clicking on this vid although i played this in the background before. Only now paying attention to the cool and funny commentary. Keep on catching!
"Race: who finishes faster, SpeedRun: how fast you finish." that was so casual yet so deep of a concept, gonna remember it! tnx for your knowledge and have a nice day :)
5:25:00 Okay, so apparently, the reason for the double gen 1 miss is that in Gen 1, because Onix is quad resistant to Poison Sting, which has base 10 attack power and is hitting a mon with a monstrously high defense stat relative to your weak physical attack, the game rounds down the damage you would have done if it would normally do a half, or in this case, a quarter damage. If Poison Sting's normally guaranteed 1 HP, then a quarter of that is 0.25, which rounds down to 0 and will thus be counted as a Miss every time you try to attack with it. As such, the only way for Poison Sting to land is if the attack would have done more than 1 HP. The reason for this is because of STAB, which would at least guarantee a point had Onix merely resisted rather than double resist the move.
After watching you getting obliterated by being unlucky over and over, I'm glad you got this run. But I'm also sad to see you retire in this category, since for me 124 is the epitome of gen 1 pokémon speedrunning.
100% agreed about vgc players thinking they’re superior. Feel like you guys face way mo rng and complain waaaaay less about it. Regardless, you guys both definitely in the NBA as far as I’m concerned. Congrats on the record really enjoyed watching this
9:00 - "This is a bad run." "Really, really bad. Very bad." Oh, Shen. Congrats though!! How much time do you think you can shave off? Sub 5:50 is definitely possible given lots of those misses alone.
...Did anyone else notice the player sprite turning to backwards ABCD at 3:34:29? I don’t know how common that is, but it really caught me by surprise.
if geodude broke out of 2 balls I was actually going to reset, as I would have been way behind. geodude getting in made up for some of the paras loss later
The chat is quite small, especially for 720p, but even with 1080p it would be very hard to read. Is it possible for you to make the chat-text more readable?
as just a casual player of these gen 1 games, (I only have blue, yellow, & crystal gen 2) , this is pretty insane lol, I mean I've done the mew glitch , & missingno back in the day but that's about it 😂
Its kind of complicated. If I had infinite bubblebeams I would only use bubblebeam (as it has a faster animation). I use watergun in some segments because I need to use all 20 of my bubblebeams. When I do need to use a watergun > bubblebeam I try to use it on things that watergun kills, or things that 2 waterguns kill that bubblebeam doesnt kill. (usually geodude/onix/nidorans are where I look for those 2 reasons)
we need to use 6 right away to get dragonair so that we can teach horn drill (dratini doesnt learn it sadly). we then use a couple on other pokemon then the rest on dragonair later
Question for someone who knows more about this category... How optimized is this run? With it being a less active category and a longer run, I would think there are probably minutes to be shaved off.
If it wasn’t possible to manipulate the catch rates, Tauros would make this record like 4 hours longer. I could never catch that fucker without abusing Cinnabar Island to catch Safari Zone Pokes.
@@Shenanagans_ Yeah, I just usually watch these and see you complaining about one of your stats, trying to route moves on the fly to make up for it, and this run just looked really different.
SurrealGuy and Trebien did runs if it AGES ago (before manips were a thing) think their PB was in the 6:00-7:00 range! I think coop could drop to like 4:45-5:00 with manips!
If youre asking about the 151 glitched speedrun we do use instant text! We get it a different way that will last through the whole run. in 124 we only use it for about 5 minutes, because once you get the bike there is no glitchless way to get insta text!
from that health it was 31.7% per pokeball and 38.4% per great ball, nad I only have 2 extra great balls to use for the whole run. better to use them elsewhere
@@Shenanagans_ Understood, I believe I don't understand properly the odds of capture, because I thought that it would add more chances of success. Just saw your FAQ, I will read it to understand it better. But thank you for the trip, it was amazing!
1) even if exp share was useful we would only need it for meowth. 2) exp share only gives 1/4 exp to meowth not 1/2 :( 3) xp share is sooooo slow in gen 1 lol. add 3 seconds per pokemon minimum! great question though! I did test it but was sad to see the 1/4 xp or it may have been worth it :(
Firstly it's 151, second it's because to get those other pokemon you need to at least have a second playthrough of the game & 2 gameboys & different versions because they all require trading with an actual gameboy (ingame trades don't count), this is how many pokemon you can get without having to resort to using other Gameboy.
1st Congratulations on a World Record The Real Game is in the Open World Find me if you want to join in on the game where you would be foolish not to play 4 free Word will get around eventually if you dont find it here

@Rimack Zelnick no no it will not
Shen I really like the way you explain your thought process and/or the math and ranges during fights. Please never stop doing that
It's funny- Shen's day job is being a math teacher so he's got the perfect skills to explain all this in an understandable way

LOL
It doesn’t ? I still do it to this day😂
big same. or that you got more exp if the fight was harder XD
Imangine you time travel back to 1997 as a 10 year old knowing all these manips. Immediate global superstar

17:08 had a double take for a second when metapod turned into gastly

Congratulation for this Amazing Run !
Amazing work Shen!! Love the commentary and explainations and super grats on the insane time. Hopefully get to see some more Colosseum runs soon!
I love how this world record starts with "I have a new strategy that it's kinda okay that I'm going to be doing"
I've been wanting to run Pokemon first gen speedruns for fun, think this might be the one. Great run!

Ill still run this here and there, but I no longer have the pressure of the 6:00 wall anymore lol
Remarkable speedrun. Well done.
Damn son. I expected sub 6 at some point, but this smashes that hour barrier. One for the ages.
yeah was kinda shocked that I beat the 6:00 barrier by this much!
Was sick to watch live! GG

Congrats on the sub 6!
Maybe a stupid question but how are you catching full health Pokémon? And you say hard a and b button? Could you explain please thank you
Thats the manips (explained better in the FAQ listed in the description)
DId I watch all this? YES! Did I do it all in one sitting ? YES!! Do I regret it ? Absolutly F**k**g NOT

Twitch could talk to Coffee Man and then fly to Cinnibar...
Frame perfect bathroom usage XD!
Next up: Blindfolded Catch em all glitchless speedrun.
I’d love to see a walkthrough on how you do all these manipulations

I mean I've done the mew glitch , & missingno back in the day but that's about it 😂
This may be a dumb question, but is it possible to come up with manips for fishing. Or what is preventing that exactly?
Fishing manip would require 3 frame perfect inputs at 60fps (which is far too difficult for any human) for each pokemon you'd manip.
@@Shenanagans_ well thank you for the answer and congratulations on the WR!
how does the catch zapdos with one pokeball thing work
What cases make you use bubblebeam and what makes you use water gun?

I’ve spent your PB just in safari looking for a Pinsir
48:21
History tells us tpp could actually not
Would it not save more time/experience to use the candies at a later level ie dragonair to dragonite?
we need to use 6 right away to get dragonair so that we can teach horn drill (dratini doesnt learn it sadly). we then use a couple on other pokemon then the rest on dragonair later
How did you manage to sharpen your emulator that much? I know there is option in video>shaders but that does not make it that sharp.
Is there a category for catching the full 150? I think that'd be cool although ik that'd need 3 different save files
i did a couple runs for coop 150 should be on the tube somewhere
Shen, great attempt and well done on WR.
What time do you think is possible?
Question for someone who knows more about this category... How optimized is this run? With it being a less active category and a longer run, I would think there are probably minutes to be shaved off.
As he says in his description and throughout the video, it's as good as it's going to get without even better luck
Is the "optimal cough" frame-perfect?
If it wasn’t possible to manipulate the catch rates, Tauros would make this record like 4 hours longer. I could never catch that fucker without abusing Cinnabar Island to catch Safari Zone Pokes.
Could you make the chat a bit bigger?
Congrats!
Is catch em all co op a thing where 1 plays red the other plays blue and yall trade to complete more of the dex?
I thought you had to beat the elite four to gain access to cerulean cave?
This would take me 16 hours
Could you do a Gen 3 fire red / leaf green catch em all?
So what were that squirtle's DVs exactly? 7/14/?/?/15 is what I got from the video which seems ridiculous, but what was speed DV?
7/14/8/13/15 iirc so very solid (even for my standards). I only accept X/11+/X/9+/10+ which is why I play the multiple games at the start!
@@Shenanagans_ Yeah, I just usually watch these and see you complaining about one of your stats, trying to route moves on the fly to make up for it, and this run just looked really different.
@@marowakcity3727 Yeah when you have good stats you can sometimes just breeze
What does IGT and DSum mean? and do you use the gamecube dpad on this? that's beast mode
Why do the emulators slightly desync in text mashing?
NPC lag. NPC's moving can cause lag (and they move randomly)
How tf you caught Articuno with a great ball dealing no damage?
It is possible, and the manipulation he used allowed him to use that extremely low chance.
Why do I not recognise so many sprites? That's so weird
What if you need to pee or poop half way through a speedrun? 😅 what do you do then
You could (edit: not in genwun son) breed the eevee for flareon / vaporeon.
I am wrong.
Breeding came about in gen 2. can only have 1 poke in the daycare in gen 1
@@Shenanagans_ oh shit, that makes sense actually what with togepi etc. Consider me corrected!
I wanna see a 2 game 150 run, it seems like hell.
SurrealGuy and Trebien did runs if it AGES ago (before manips were a thing) think their PB was in the 6:00-7:00 range! I think coop could drop to like 4:45-5:00 with manips!
There's a category for that for the Let's Go games
Can I trade for ur beedrill at 5:24:25
Do they utilize Instant text in 1:51?
If youre asking about the 151 glitched speedrun we do use instant text! We get it a different way that will last through the whole run. in 124 we only use it for about 5 minutes, because once you get the bike there is no glitchless way to get insta text!
Shenanagans Smash thanks for the reply!!
2:27:54 LoL!
Why 4 screens and other parts?
I would love to see Twitch Plays Pokemon do DSum . . .
Here's how I justify Poké Doll skip. It's a Cubone doll. :|
Why is this 5:50:xx but you released a sub 6:30:xx and it’s the world record?
Manips vs no manips
Ohh thank you
Reverse pokedex order next?
this run is really impressive but I doubt that sub 5:30:00 is impossible. There seems to be a lot of room for improvement on this.
43:54 LMAO
I feel so noobish, how and why did you have four game displays in the first minute?
Makes getting a good starter faster (at the time it was allowed, but has since been banned)
Why do you keep resetting them game?
what does IGT mean?
Ingame time.
Is there a TAS WR? I can’t find any?
There’s one that’s a TAS but it’s glitched run.
You can get on the bicycle by just pressing select.. saves a lot of time
in Gen 2 onwards yes
Oh allright, cool thanks. Anyway nice vid
Why only use poke ball?
Why the hell you don't used a great ball on that Seadra?
from that health it was 31.7% per pokeball and 38.4% per great ball, nad I only have 2 extra great balls to use for the whole run. better to use them elsewhere

why squirtle and not bulbasaur
squirle is the fastest pokemon to pokeflute by about 20 mins to bulbasaur and 5 mins to charmander making it the best pick!
@@Shenanagans_ oh ok thx

Exp share not useful?
1) even if exp share was useful we would only need it for meowth.
2) exp share only gives 1/4 exp to meowth not 1/2 :(
3) xp share is sooooo slow in gen 1 lol. add 3 seconds per pokemon minimum!
great question though! I did test it but was sad to see the 1/4 xp or it may have been worth it :(
Wait why does it say 124 owned Pokemon at the end? I thought there were 150 Pokemon In Pokemon Red and Blue? I'm a little bit confused.
Firstly it's 151, second it's because to get those other pokemon you need to at least have a second playthrough of the game & 2 gameboys & different versions because they all require trading with an actual gameboy (ingame trades don't count), this is how many pokemon you can get without having to resort to using other Gameboy.
