- A quick comprehensive guide and analysis of Tonowari from James Cameron's Avatar (2009) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) Explained.
In this breakdown, analysis, reaction and explanation we focus on Tonowari, played by actor Cliff Curtis, the clan leader or Olo'eyktan of the Metkayina clan. One of the many oceanic clans residing in the atolls region of Pandora's eastern seas.
In this video essay we discuss Tonowari's relationship with his mate/wife Ronal (Kate Winslet), his daughter Tsireya (Bailey Bass) and his son Ao'nung (Filip Geljo). And his stuggle of accepting Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) family into the central village of the Metkayina, Awa'atlu. Dealing with the chaos that is Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), Tuk (Trinity Bliss), Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Spider (Jack Champion), and Lo'ak (Britain Dalton).
Tonowari guides his Na'vi clan through "Times of Great Challenge" as the Captain of the SeaDragon Mick Scoresby (Brendan Cowell), Dr. Ian Garvin (Jemaine Clement) and the rest of Scoresby's crew hunts down their Tulkun spirit brothers and sisters, like Ro'a.
I reference Avatar The Way of Water The Visual Dictionary (2022) and The World of Avatar: A Visual Exploration (2022) to give you some more of that knowledge when it comes to his wardrobe, costume design and overall aesthetic. Like how it is greatly inspired by the teeth of an Akula.

"and his disappointment of a son" 💀
Omg 😭🤣
beating*@@RainyDaysoffiacial
BRO RLLY HAD TO POINT HIM OUT💀
The fact that you keep using the clip of Jake falling down the tree whenever you’re talking about him is 👌
Neytiri would probably do the same if she has the footage lmao
I hope that since Jake and his family are officially seen as part of the Metkayina clan, perhaps some of them will acquire tattoos. I feel as though Lo’ak and Jake would get tattoos in the future (especially Lo’ak since he bonded with a Tulkun)
Tonowari was a very kind guy as he actually let them stay, he is a great leader and wanna see him in later movies
I absolutely love Tonowari.Cliff Curtis was the perfect choice for this character
Dude imagine Tonowari fist fighting Quaritch
I’d kill to see that
And win
Tonowari was by far the best Olo'eyktan we have seen so far in Avatar, he's a wise and reasonable leader of the Metkayina Na'vi and also a caring father to both Ao'nung and Tsireya. He knows when to put the Clan's best interests before himself and when to draw the line and go to war against the Sky People (aka Cet-Ops) , and he treats the Sully family with empathy for their forced relocation from the forest and respect by allowing them to stay with the Metkayina Clan. I like many of the interesting details about him ranging from the tattoos and the mantle which he wears around his neck which has AKULA teeth, and I hope to see him again in Avatar 3. Cliff Curtis has definitely captured Tonowari's personality very well, and I especially like how he conveyed the Metkayina leader's mannerisms and personality traits.
A small note: Jake may not be the best Olo'eyktan, but he chose to put in his best efforts to at least try and well...there are some stumbles along the way but from what we know from the Avatar books and comics he did manage to do a reasonably well job. But the process of becoming a great leader of men...I mean, Na'vi does require him to gradually learn the ways of the Olo'eyktan and also adapting to the changing situation that the clan faces on a daily basis. Which was why I really wish to see Tonowari giving some advice to Jake on how to find balance between his human origins and also trying to adapt to the ways of the Na'vi, hopefully in a walk along the beaches of Awa'atlu.
Love Tonowari's Necklace. He is a man of Honor and He Openly Welcomed The Sully Family, just like Tsireya.
Once you get more of the big name characters done; Please consider doing a video about Recom Lyle Wainfleet. He is clearly going to be important in Avatar 3- as he and Miles are the only Recoms to survive. Lyle seems like a dumb marine but he is actually VERY observant and very clever, both as a human in A1 and now as a Na'vi in A2 💙💙💙 And his tattoos are so interesting to look into as well!
Also because he killed both tsu'tey and ✨Neteyam✨ 🎉
I absolutely love how detailed your videos are. Your research is amazing and I love learning about everything you have to share.
The scene which you replaced Lo'ak's face with Tonowari's is REALLY hilarious😂
he is a good leader and Navi because he let the Sully's stay with them and he helped Jake and his family and he is also an interesting character as well.
About the ikran leather, in the atol it could be seen as a rare and curious material that is hard to get since it has to be traded from afar and that itself can be a status thing. That Tonowari has enough power and respect that he can secure a trade even with distant non-related clans or something of the sort.
PLS DO LO'AKK
We making it out of pandora with this one 🔥🗿🔥🔥
Nobody wants to make it out of pandora, my guy 🙏
Keep making these videos I love them
ur the best youtuber ever
Keep up the good work 👍🏼
The cape of all capes! I’m glad you saw it Bryce 😎
The Thanator is like the tiger on Pandora and the Akula is like the shark.
I LOVE IT!!❤❤❤
Gosh, this vid might be my fave. ❤❤.
Wow! Great video! I've always liked Tonowari, but Bryce, why are you so mean to Aonung lol
Poor kid 😅 hope we get a vid on him soon! I'd love that ❤
Wonderful video
Thank you so much!
AWESOME
Omgggggg yayyyy AVATARRRRRRRRR
WOOOOOOO ANOTHER ONE
Bryce, I commented on almost all of your avatar videos for one thing and I’m gonna have to ask again disclaimer I do love the video but when is the neytiri video
PLSSSSSSSSS RONAL NEXT
The Na'vi could actually be in their Prehistoric Stage and in 10,000 years in the future they could seriously advance and build cities like humans.
I love Tonowari 😭🙌
Can you please explain Lo’ak!!
The cape could be made out of the sea banshee or could be from that ocean/banshee clan that thought in battle
Tonowari has my respect and he is my favorite Olo’eyktan and also Ao’nung is definitely a disappointment imo and Ronal also has my respect as the Tsahik and she and her daughter, Tsireya, are among my favorite Metkayina
Can you please explain aonung? I'm waiting for him
More AVATAR videos! MORE MORE MORE!
I actually like the actor who plays Tonowari. He does a good job with his roles, and he's another one that plays roles that are in the background. He's underrated for his skills.
Clint
Bro i realy love you and your videos i wish you will get better about likes or scribes
Thank you for the support 💙
Are you going to make a video on neytiri's father or that other guy I don't know how to spell his name
Avatar's storyverse not suprisingly contains "reflective" recognition layers from many of earths "living" indigious cultures , Cliff Curtis is of Maori ancestry , Wes Studi is of Tsalagi (Cherokee) Ancestry , but it is also very important to note for example that the Tattoo art that adorns Cliffs Charter is deliberatly not a direct copy of the Body art that the Maori commuity would display on there body as those style Tattoo's form a core part of Maori cultural idenity or personhood. and are a core part of ones coming of age.. in humble recognition of the Maori commuity and there peopels deep history I really hope Avatar fans would take the time to take a look at there peoples deep roots ..Avatar's story refect's upon the acts of acts of forced colonization impacted upon the Na'vi peoples of pandora by the instution of the RDA , But in deep refection , are we "also" aware of our own very real world colonization history and how it deeply internaly impacted the Maori commuiity past and present as we sit in front of the story mirror ? What does family mean to the Maori commuty ? and how does Maori leadership work to strengthen the roots of these vital layers ? Whats a leaders role in that position ? Same issues within the Tsalagi (Cherokee) commuitys today. Our Kiwi-Tanga a conversation upon some the layers of this subject. ua-cam.com/video/J9uEiA9YTXM/v-deo.html do you see some of these layers refected in the films storyverse ? historicly how have indigious cultures worked to resolve conflits with there own peoples long before our own people came in there ships ? (Haudenosaunee / Great law of Peace as one example of this )
Thank you
I like tonowari but he should have listened to lo'ak that the wale was framed
Can you do a Ronal video
Didn't they run ? or should i say swim away at the last fight in Way of Water
Did they made another name for Akula for dubbs to languages where Akula is already meaning shark?
Plss can you do ronal explaind
do you know that the face tattoos of the metkayina tribe and the language na"vi are highly influential in Maori (New Zealand's ethnic people) culture.
Can you do Lo’ak next? I saw you haven’t done him yet out if all of the Sully kids. @bryce Edward brown
DId you notice the scar on his arm?
Loak pls
Jake always said I can handle this one. I got this one. I can do this one. Let me do this one. To his kids
Do lo ak
FO NEYTIRIR NEXT PLZZZZZ
Do Neytiri*
Pls loak and ronald
You should talk about eleven
I think the only person Tonowari fears is his wife 😂
back to back woohoo
"And his ✨disappointment✨ of a son😃"
Not enough shade in this video if you ask me
How tall is Tonowari?
9'7 but he is still not the tallest navi seen on screen. That honor goes to Grace's avatar which was 10 ft tall. And they can still grow larger with some being said to be 11 and 12 ft.
Akula is how shark is called in Bulgarian
Great fact!
first viewer
HOW DOES TONOWARI GET HALF AS LONG AS A VIDEO THEN TUK!!!!!!!!! 😠
smash lol
No matter what video I have I always learn a very important fact…. Anoung is a disappointment
Where is Neytiri explained?
Still waiting on Neytiri explained.
