Using a Kickbike to Cross-Train for Running - Is It Effective? - Kickbike CrossMax 20

  • I suffered an overuse injury to my knee from running too much volume. I needed a tool to cross-train while I shut my running down. Due to gym restrictions, I could not use the typical cross-training techniques of treadmill, elliptical machines, studio bikes, or swimming pools.
The demand for men's bicycles are so high right now I would need to take a second mortgage on my house to purchase a bike. This left me with limited options for cross-training.
I had learned about the use of a Kickbike while listening to the Running Public Podcast. A European female elite Spartan racer had used the kickbike for cross-training. I had never heard of such a thing and researched the kickbike.
What I learned is that it is used by dog mushers in the summer for training, commonly referred to as dryland mushing. The bike was developed in the Nordic countries and other athletes such as runners and XC skiers started using it for cross-training.
My thought is the Kickbike somewhat resembles the motion of running and hopefully will strengthen my hips while reducing my ground contact time and increasing my stride length. I have been training with it on a track for Zone 1 steady state endurance.
I purchased the CrossMax 20 from KickbikeUS.com for $599. You have to put this bike together and the written instructions aren't great. This is the best UA-cam video I found on how to assemble the bike:
    • Kickbike : Cross Max 2...
I plan on cross-training with this Kickbike over the course of the next 4-6 months while reducing my running volume. I will be doing additional updates on the use of it for cross-training.
    Thanks for watching.

Another great idea. I might look into this. I’ve been dealing with back issues after breaking my back jumping out of planes. I love running but it really bothers my back. I’d love something that I could use between flare ups.

That sucks about the back issues, you'll never catch me jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft. This this is no impact and low aerobic but still somewhat simulates the running motion. You just want a level road or trail to do it on.

Thanks for watching Mile 62, the kickbicke has been great. I am getting ready to start another block of training and will be doing an update on what I have learned/think the kickbike has improved my health/running.

HI this Kickbike is great, but .... Because of your injury i would consider a Kickbike or Scooter with lower ground clearance. Also the front fork with the suspension is not need for tarmac and flat roads, its heavier and your "kick" energy goes waste to the fork and not to the exactly motion. Rigid fork for your needs will be better

Thanks for the insight. I plan on taking this kickbike out onto trails/dirt roads, My injury is good now, just using the bike as a cross training tool, it has been great, the track is close to my house so makes it convenient for an aerobic workout. I plan on doing an updated video with my "results" from using it.

I have metatarsalgia, which is basically sore forefeet. I also have some bursitis in my knees, so im very limited on what i can do to get exercise/cardio. Im trying swimming but also have shoulder and neck issues...really i have to watch what i do whole body.
Im also looking at the Schwinn shuffle kick bike. Think itll work for my special needs?

I am sorry you are dealing with your injuries. Do you think you can balance on a kick bike without falling over? There really is no downward impact on the foot, it is more of digging motion like a a cat digging a hole, if you get one, I would suggest going to a 1/4 mile track to learn how to use it being a smooth level surface. It sounds like the doctor(s) have cleared you for physical activity. Also I. would try standing on one foot/leg, using a countertop to balance yourself and see if you can just stand there one leg for a few minutes and swing your other leg back and forth in the "kick" motion to see if that has any pain prior to purchasing a kick bike. Good luck I hope you heal up quickly and get some relief from the pain. 🙏
