Well, I guess in a sense, that's correct. Out of all industrialized nations, this is the "grittiest" for the common person, in this case, the common child.
I had a 17 year old have his mom call and cancel a contact lens appointment because he couldn't get a ride to our doctors office. He lived 7 minutes away....7 MINUTES AND HE COULDN'T WALK. So this child is going places ❤❤❤
He thought a full ride meant a ride to college..... between a car and a 4 year college education paid for, you got the better of the 2, but my guess is that transportation part will also come to you somehow. I am so impressed with his tenacity. I love seeing good things come to kids who truly need them and deserve them.
i had a car accident (small, no injuries) but my insurance company, Progressive, totaled my car.That was 3 months ago. I have not gotten another car yet. Instead i bought a new bicycle, I ride to and from work 5 days a week, to the grocery store, everywhere. People at work look down upon me, but IDGAF. PERSEVERANCE is what it's all about. So glad he got a full ride to college....the college president is right, its not all about your SAT scores or whatever, it's about your character. Half the battle is showing up. Well deserved Xavier!

You know he worked hard in school to want to get to his graduation... Kids who don't give 2 cents in school, wouldn't care about their diploma. The idea of a scholarship 4 years out is always crazy to me, you see it because of sports a lot. But in this case, I believe in the motivation of it. No judgment, but it's telling this young man realized his only way of getting there was walking. No adult he could call on to give him a short ride? Kind of heartbreaking. So I'm glad she came around and offered him this. Kind of a reason to keep grinding at such a young age, knowing he may not get it from anywhere else. Rise above, Xavier

They're from a poor family. It was the grandfather's car (not a new fancy one) that wouldn't start when he was about to take Xavier to his graduation. Instead of missing his graduation, he decided to walk. From what I saw of the grandfather, I don't think he would have made the journey walking. I believe that after the story broke, Xavier was presented with a bicycle and his grandfather, a vehicle.. Go, check out the story. It will warm your heart 😊

His grandfather raised him. I was raised by my grandma and didnt go to my high school graduation as none of my aunts and uncles that always lived off her even had her buying them cars would attend or bring her. My bf at the time was jealous I was 17 and he was 23 and never finished high school until I began being the teachers assistant in his class. Some people really have noone at the time my mom was alive but didnt drive and didnt care.
The story is also about President Smith, because in her presence, opportunities will rise! It's her job to recognize ways she can make this a better world, as she did by helping this young man who is a REAL go-getter!

I live in Germany. The kids don't walk to school, they take public transport. They ride the U-Bahn or subway along with city buses.Their tickets are subsidised by us taxpayers.
Thanks Young Man. My car broke down yesterday on my way to work and I got a ride in. Was going to take the day off today, but have decided I am going to walk the 6 miles so I can Show Up! I won't get anything special, not even appreciation. But I will be getting the holiday pay for next week because of it.
