    This was great, but could u do a video using more simple chord progressions (ex. Autumn Leaves/ Blue Bossa/ even On the Sunny Side) and teach us how to go super saiyan blue on it like you. I’m a self taught alto player who is tryna get nasty.
    P.s i’d watch a 30 min vid if you explain it for dummies like me.

    Thank you for explaining the simple stuff along with the more complicated stuff. It helps me so much to learn new things when the basics are still recognizable in what you’re teaching. It’s grounding.

    Man thats fantastic. I always think improvising is too hard because I can't think that fast, but this clearly shows that the preparatory work is capital. Thanks a lot for the method and the approach. +i'd clearly watch a 30min video of this :D

      Lucas Moreau That’s great to hear! I think I am going to stick to 10 min doses - it will make the videos take less time to come and it will keep me from driving crazy. Like even this video look me forever to edit haha now my sleep schedule is backwards!! Thanks for your input man

      wzrd1122 You should start watching Signals Music Studio, and later once you know the basics, Adam Neely. They expose you to a lot of theory terms, and then use them. I would start with Signals Music Studios, because he explains the terms more than Adam Neely does. Even though he doesn’t play Sax, he plays guitar, watching his stuff is still really helpful in starting to understand theory. Anyway, your comment caught my eye, and I realized I could actually help you!😁 So go check them out, and keep watching Saxologic!

    Great video man! I began my study of bebop and am gaining a lot from tutorials like this. I'm not yet at the point where I can practice for long periods of time without getting lost because I'm still working on the foundation - approach tones and arpeggios. Thankfully my classical chops gave me good scales. You're an inspiration!
    Edited because I wasn't paying attention to what Saxologic was actually saying

      Did I not refer to it as the ii? I’m not sure where I went wrong haha, I didn’t catch anything!

    • @marcusstoica
      @marcusstoica 5 років тому +1

      @@Saxologic Man I'm sorry. I just rewatched that part and you were saying that the 5th degree of Bb7 is F natural.. duh! That had nothing to do with the harmonic movement. This is what happens if you try to pay attention while really tired I guess!
      If I may, could I ask a question? I'm really into jazz and classical myself, and the areas I've lived in haven't really been the best places to get gigs and play with people. I think I'm at the point where I'd really benefit playing with other people but the internet might be the best and only place to really do that. Do you think it would make sense to start making videos of me playing, whatever they were? I really want to start collaborating with people so I can get better, I just don't know how!

    I’d definitely watch even a 45 minute video of this! I had always approached improvising in a very literal sense that i compose it on the spot and because of that i feel that my licks aren’t really that interesting. This is almost the exact opposite to my approach but it seems to work well for you, i’m gonna give it a shot in my next practice sesh

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 років тому +2

      Tony Watson Wow, good to know! And thanks, as long as you keep in mind that it all takes a good amount of time for it to truly soak into your subconscious before you play it freely into your improvised solos! It’s just a great way to have an objective in a practice session and kill a ton of birds with one stone. You work on your theory, ear training, intervals, fluency of knowing the numbers, recognizing patterns, and you practice the line which works on your technique as well.

    Any tips regarding rhythm and/or note grouping?

  • @neillmoscoso6698
    @neillmoscoso6698 5 років тому +6

    How long did it take to get to a point where you could improvise without planning ahead and transcribing lines? Does it just eventually get under your fingers where it feels natural to play something because your ears are so tuned to a certain chord or chord progression? Also loved the video, I always that outlining a certain chord would sound childish but I can see that changing the rhythm like into triplets or articulation really changes the vibe of the line 😁

    • @Saxologic
      @Saxologic  5 років тому +14

      Neill Moscoso It really takes a while man haha. Imagine learning French or some other language you don’t know. There are no shortcuts, right? You really have to learn the little things and then practice integrating it all together to make a bigger picture. Creating your jazz lines like I did in the video would be the equivalent of writing a speech and then speaking it. You won’t go around your daily life reciting your speech word for word but your brain absorbed it subconsciously and you’ll find some bits creep up into your actual speaking when interacting with others, which is the equivalent to improvising. I find as you gain more fluency in jazz, lines pop up in your head before you play them as you solo. If you’ve been practicing a lot, constantly writing down what you hear in your head before it gets away and working on playing it, then you’ll be able to instantly execute it on the spot when it pops up in your head in the spur of the moment. But the most beautiful part to me is that all of this stuff really is connected. Sometimes, you might hear something in your head that you’ve never played before but it comes out in your playing in the spur of the moment anyway. The further you get into this level of fluency, the less you’ll have to write so much, as the ideas in your head will be almost concrete. I wouldn’t consider myself this far on the fluency spectrum; I’ve got a lot of work to go!
      But seriously, allow yourself a lot of time. There will be moments where everything just finally “clicks” and your skill seemingly spikes up tremendously out of no where. But most of the time, progress will feel gradual. It’s all a long-term process. So it’s important to constantly feed your ears with music you love and aspire to sound like!

    • @neillmoscoso6698
      @neillmoscoso6698 5 років тому +1

      Saxologic thanks man, I’ve been getting more into classical saxophone for the past two years and finally learned vibrato because it helped me speak the notes better and express if that makes any sense. I’ve been trying to play some Paul Desmond transcription but he’s very lyrical so I might try and look at Bird ofc for some lines 👍
