I really have respect for the Queen. She clearly has experience and understands the hollowness of revenge, and the vicious cycle of the betrayed becoming the betrayer of someone else (Charle's wife).
I like Queen Claude, even before seeing her in season one. She was said to be the Katherine of Aragon of France, in similarities. She was pious like her sister consort, and was a gracious, sweet lady.
I don't think they ever said which Queen she is, but seeing as how they have a son, it's more than likely his 2nd wife Queen Eleanor. His 1st wife Queen Claude only gave him daughters.
Royal marriages were hardly ever matters of love. And he didn't love her either. But she has more self-respect than most women and she's the queen. If she didn't want to end up executed or humiliated and destitute forever, the only option is to put up with your position indeed.
As a French girl, I enjoy remembering that at that time french was the international language, just as english now. Everybody in every royal court of Europe knew how to speak french and it was the language for diplomacy, so in fact, the queen and Charles should be speaking french... But well, of course it's an english-speaking show so it's in english and we can hear our amazing accent ; )
Actually, the French language was brought to the English court by William the Conqueror by the XI° century after he won the Battle of Hastings in 1066, so de facto by the Norman-French. (From England, to Ireland actually. The Irish language even has been influenced by Norman-French.) That stayed a tradition for a long time, but MrStig691 is right here. This was the elite language mainly spoken in England. Hence why the British Monarchy's motto is in French : "Dieu et mon Droit." And that is why all the members of the Royal Family speak French even nowadays. Queen Elizabeth has speaks French amazingly.
MrStig691 from 1066 up to the end of the 14th century, the nobility in england spoke french, not english. ( thats why so much of english vocabulary is french in origin). When the 18th century began french not only became the language of european aristocracy, but the dominant lingua franca until the beginning of the 20th century. So in this context it would be more historically accurate for these two to converse in french rather than english. I dont understand from where youve gotten the impression "english was already better" from. But obviously they speak in english because its produced by americans and intended for consumers who arent the least bit interested in historical accuracy, like you for instance.
In Russia (from what I have read), French was the language spoken in Court. With Nicholas II and his family, they spoke Russian to the servants and French or English to each other.
So, Claude was the sovereign of a stranger country: officially, she was practically Francis' equal (even if, in practice, he had much more power than her). Because of that, legally, he didn't have the required authority to condamn her to anything. 3. Francis' predecessor on the throne of France, King Louis XII of France, was claude's father. Because of that, french people respected and loved Claude even more than Francis himself. Executing Claude was the best way to cause a civil war.
Francis was never a faithful husband, never considered pretending otherwise considering the poor woman had scolioses and was nearly a hunchback, much smaller than her husband. She wasn't pretty in the conventional sense and like her mother spent nearly all her life endlessly pregnant. Despite that, Francis was still in his own way a considerate husband. He deferred to her gentle personalty and since she never complained or interfered in politics, respected her moral codes and generally tried being discreet with his affairs. Plus she did all she had to as a Queen. She gave him three healthy sons, was pious and devoted to her children, stayed out of court intrigues, and never caused trouble. He may never have loved her but he did treat her with compassion and regard. Which is more than what we can say for Henry VIII.
