I work in digital advertising at a major global firm, and have done for some time. The core issue is that Snapchat almost never has an incremental audience. It is extremely rare that a user only uses snap, or even 'mostly' uses snap. This basically means its almost never worth your trouble to buy ads with Snap when you can just reach the same user on Instagram, TikTok, UA-cam etc which tend to have stronger ad products to begin with.
Thank you for the great insight! I know little about B2C marketing so have a question. If their rates were low enough would it make it worth buying ad space as a tool to “reinforce the message” or saturate the market? Also, how much less than the others would they have to be?

At first, it was absolutely 100 percent about sexting, nudes, and cheating on your partner. Lmao. And they absolutely knew that and leaned into it. Like telling people if you screenshotted, was specifically for nudes lol
@@WilliamHaisch Agreed, its telegram. Snapchat is the preferred platform of cheaters or sexual freaks who want their messages to be instantly deleted after a single viewing now. I would know, I'm in a swinger community and that's what everyone talks through lol.
I enjoyed Snapchat while I was in high school back in '14-'18. Begrudgingly used it during college, but was definitely done with it. I still have a few people I mainly talk to on it, but I'd be happier if I could delete the app. Too much garbage on there now, both in terms of what people post and the ads.
Kinda similar for me. I was an absolute streak fiend in hs '13-'17. Then in college it was actually the main way I talked to friends because everyone had it, and I had an android. So I would text on it, sometimes video call on it, and save memories (so many funny college moments are being saved on a server somewhere at Snap, please don't lose them!) but didn't actually snap as much and never really did the whole streaks thing anymore. Now I snap a few close friends and look at stories but that's about it. I don't intend to delete though.
@@principalmcvicker6530 I probably will. I'll hopefully tell the remaining friends that I'm planning to soon. I have their numbers, I'll just text them
Nothing interesting ever seems to happen on Snapchat. Most of the stories I see from the map are just people driving around listening to really terrible music, or people smoking weed. Real riveting content 👌
Can you do Barnes and noble? They’ve had quiet the rise these past few years and they’re the only retailer in relation to books in America. I think it’d be quiet the interesting topic. I love your videos btw.
Honestly I kinda enjoy MySpace nostalgia more than I enjoyed the app itself. It was clearly a product of is time and viewing things in retrospect makes it a lot more interesting to me. I probably wouldn't had enjoyed MTV that much in 1987,just too omnipresent and mainstream, but seeing its legacy in music and cable tv is fascinating.
Moral of the story, when a big one is ready to dump shitloads of money to buy you and you DECLINE an early rich retirement, they will pour double that amount of money into your idea at other platform… you dont win
Snapchat was simply stubborn. They refused to develop an app for Windows Phones, and while other apps were the same, other apps ignored, or encouraged the development of 3rd party apps for that platform, while Snapchat decided to ban everyone who used a 3rd party app. They were always like this, and I'm not surprised at all, that they are dying.
The thing that i can say i despise about Snapchat is the fact that everytime i want to go watch a story it quickly changes into a add friend list and no, you can't turn them off. You have to into the list and spend time deleting them manually until it's empty. I hate that with a passion almost everytime i open the damn app.
As someone who doesn’t care for Twitter/X and instagram, Snapchat is a fine excuse for a social media app to just chat with friends or coworkers I’ve hung out with
What about the apps they use to track you and to show up? Or them deciding to just steal your shit? Lock you out and ignore your request to get your intellectual property back? Nobody talks about the bs that's being allowed.
I think one of the advantages that Snapchat has in getting it's name spoken and out there a lot more is it's a verb used similar to "I'll Google it" or "I'll tweet about it" (Well, used to anyway) in that you'd say "I'll send you a Snap" I think they stand better by themselves than by integration like Instagram has, don't think every app needs to be a one-stop-shop so to speak.
As Snapchat's competition was adopting all of its features, they started adding advertising and other stupid crap (looking at you, AI chat bot). All of the social media platforms are bloated with ads and worthless features, but it has become painfully obvious with Snap. Mostly because it was so simple not too long ago.
Yeah, Snap doesn't care about Android. We don't even have dark mode, and the picture/video quality is literally just whatever is displayed on screen, not even a full blown photo or video in comparison to the stock camera's quality
i definitely think another thing affecting the company is that original pro of being short non-saved moments. a lot of scammers and gr00mers use snapchat as a way to stay untracked. i think that stereotype about snapchat has changed people’s perception and usage.
I understand why some people don’t like Snapchat but I’ve always liked the app. I’m a bit surprised you didn’t mention snapchat streaks, which is added incentive to continue using the app on a daily basis. I have a 900+ day streak with someone and we don’t want to lose that, and especially want that to reach 1000. Great video Company Man!
That was the only way for me to log on everyday and see what others were up to, once I graduated from high school in 2020, I ended my streaks and didn’t feel the need to be that active. I mainly use it as extra storage space for videos and photos which is located in their best feature, Memories. I have so much memories from 2015, I can’t imagine outright deleting my account. I still think they have better filters than instagram.
I’m in my 30s, and Snapchat is my most used social media. Getting a photo a day from friends, and sending a photo back allows me to stay in touch with friends. But not necessarily have a full conversation with them. It’s also more personal. Instagram & Facebook are my next most used social media and that’s where things are more “general” as parents, family, are on there, not just close friends like Snapchat.
It’s not going anywhere. Not for a looong time. He literally showed the daily user charts which have grown every single year and is currently at an all time high
@@6z0 the problem is that those daily users they do not translate into revenue, and the company have failed to turn a profit since its launch. Operating costs do not pay for themselves, cost of borrowing is now extremely high, and shareholders are not going to let the money they invested parked forever in a company stock that is not growing. So it is not that unlikely that the company could eventually fail or most likely be bought at a discount by a competitor.
Only Wall Street could look at a company that went from zero to 120 billion in no time, and had two quarters of reduced profit and decide it was a lost cause. This is what's wrong with this world. It only cares about three-month blocks. There are projects that could get done that might take 70 or 100 years but it will never happen as long as quarterly results matter more than anything.
its not about who did it first.... Its about who has a stranglehold on the market, actively keeping people engaged on their platform through morally questionable means.... Also Snapchat always felt like a kiddie app, while Instagram over the years became old enough to be serious, while being young enough not be Facebook. BeReal was a cool concept but, was just too boring.
Im 22, I used this app on and off when I was a teenager but I hardly ever use it now that I’m an adult. I still regularly use other apps I used as a teen like discord or messenger or Instagram but Snapchat just never really stuck with me
Snapchat was a huge part of maintaining my long-distance dating relationship with the woman I have now been married to for over 7 years. So I have very fond feelings towards it. Lol.
Might be in the minority, but where I come from (Norway), snapchat is the dominant place for texting. If you are dating, most will use snapchat to communicate. Very convenient that everything dissapears or you can see if another person saved it. If you are friends and want to chat casually, most will use SC to communicate for reasons stated above. if you are partying or just want to document something you see in daily life, SC is the way. Instagram and its stories features are mostly used to highlight special experiences, like holidays/birthdays/halloween. SC stands as the casual texting app where I am from.
This is very strange. Every communication app has disappearing or even better encrypted messages. I also don't know your social cycle, but how often do you really date new people and you really care that your messages will be "deleted"... unless you write very strange things to them. 🙄
@@Bearly_Bluemakes perfect sense for dating becauwe if you're matching with people over dating apps, you can easily verify they are who they say they are and also don't have to give them your phone number or access to other more open socials (insta/FB)
@bearish_on_bears a lot of Europe uses Snapchat for similar reasons as stated in the parent comment. Sounds to me like you just haven’t explored enough. Nordic culture in general is a lot more private than in the US and the brand of Snapchat is privacy. Also it’s not easy to persuade a culture to use a different app. For example, WhatsApp is leagues ahead of iMessage in terms of UX and encryption but remains untouched in the US.
Secret chats are in other apps. Besides, why would you need secret chats with friends? It's not like anyone can read them in the first place unless your spouse grabs your phone. App started as the sexting/cheating app for a reason.
I honestly used it as a camera app, saving photos to the app. Most of my Europe trip is saved on Snapchat, and the FaceTime feature is great for android users talking to iPhone users.
yeah I think to anyone using snapchat its pretty obvious. Other platforms offer similar features and at times even expand more of them. Snapchat is for friends and family, and if youre in college party locations, but other than that theres no reason to use the app. Twitter is great for debate, conversations, and news. Instagram is great for memes, photography, and videos. TikTok is great for both shortform and recently longform videos. when you have those 3 apps whats the purpose of snapchat? most people already have their family and friends phone numbers, so snapchat is slowly becoming irrelevant, hell even gen alpha the kids from 2012 and after dont even use the app, its "old" to them
the thing abt snapchat is that its almost exclusively used by kids, or at least those still in school. I have never known anyone above the age of 18 who still uses snapchat.
Snapchat has always been popular with us middle schoolers. We like its simplicity and cute format. It also offers a lot of options, such as connecting with friends and much more.
Something else that hampers their profitability is they pay for data storage from other companies. The more users they have does increase their revenue, but it also increases their data costs.
I like it because it's useful to send pictures of something funny or interesting I happen to see to my friends and don't have take up space on my phone for a bunch of useless pictures. Even to send it to a variety of friends without having to start some weird group-text, lol. So that would be something I miss if they fold.
I’ll never forget when I got the email from instagram about the year 2017 or so -announcing heir “new” instagram stories . HOW DARE THEY COPU SNAPCHAT!! That is such a low blow
I love Snapchat, it is pretty much the only social media I use to connect with friends. We see it like sending post cards to each other. Now if they would just let me pay to not have to see the crazy loud ads that interrup my enjoyment of the snaps.
I hate snap chat with every fiber of my being, the reason being EVERY OTHER PERSON WHO HAS IT AT MY SCHOOL TAKES PICTURES OF PEOPLE WITHOUT ASKING IF THEY CAN AND THEN POSTING PICTURES OF THEM!!!!!!!!!! THAT AND THEY SPY ON YOU WITH IT!!!!!
That’s around the same time that I stopped using Snapchat. It remember using it nonstop after graduating high school in 2013, then all throughout college. But yes, before 2018-ish it just felt like a whole different app entirely
I was surprised to see you immediately said that in 2021 was their peak valuation. I thought they were done by then. In fact, I thought they were done as early as 2019.
At this point their next big move should just be cloud storage. Snapchat memories is an awesome feature, and after years of use people are gonna have a lot of stuff saved on snapchat that is hard/annoying to move elsewhere. Something akin to icloud or dropbox, just because its all there already and having a separate source of picture storage is always a plus.
Yeah, but companies gotta make money somehow. All the people they pay and all that web space and moderation costs money. Can't run a business as a public service.
It's a catch 22. You need investors in your company if you want it to grow. When your company isn't making money, then your investors aren't making money, which then makes them pull their money or get a new CEO or stops new investors from investing in your company. Stock price goes down. Sometimes it's best to play the slow game and "quarter on quarter" growth doesn't allow that most of the time.
@@mae2759 Yep. These tech companies, including uber, all lose billions of dollars every year gaining users. When they build up enough users and get them dependent is where they start charging. But obviously the founders dont' have billions to "burn" year over year. You need investors to help with the burn until they become profitable.
I signed up for Snap Chat and other than sex workers continuously sending me their ads, there was nothing there for me. I deleted it because of all the sex workers.
it's always been absurd to me that people go "snapchat is more private because pictures disappear". we all know snapchat is collecting those images just like every other social media company. also the app drains battery even when not using it.
Hello Company Man, for your next video talk about MySpace, it was the largest social network back in 2003, but due to bad executive decisions they did not know how to adapt to the changes and went bankrupt in 2011. The question is what exactly happened ? (MySpace - Why it failed).
Most of my friends and family primarily use Snapchat for messaging each other. I really enjoy the camera ease-of-use and functionality, and when I first meet folks we usually add each other on Snapchat before any other method of communication.
What I never understood is the appeal of sending people temporary pictures that disappear after a set amount of time rather than just... texting? Or sending people pictures through text that aren't going to expire and disappear? For me, Snapchat hasn't provided anything for me that I can't get through either Facebook or regular texting.
It was made for nudes lol, but people would screenshot. Then they made it tell you when someone screenshotted, so they use another phone to take a picture of it
@@SuperCR45 Snapchat's primary use as far as I knew when I briefly used it was snapping and sending pictures to friends as a way of communication, who once they or you would open the sent messages couldn't (at least easily) be viewed again; if they changed it to where pictures sent became permanent, it would've been after I got tired of it and stopped using it. Idk what you think my age is, but hey, I'll tell you I grew up in the 2000s where I didn't grew up with a cell phone and didn't really have a good one until I was almost an adult, but did grow up with a computer and easy Internet access as a kid.
Snapchat has become less relevant as more social apps have come to light. The new social apps coupled with apps hosting online communities such as Discord have really impacted the growth of Snapchat.

The integration of Snapchat features into other apps was a major part of their downfall. However, I find it interesting how popular it actually still is. I’m in my late 20s, and among my peers in NYC, Snapchat usage faded away by 2018. I moved to South Jersey 3 years ago, and most of younger coworkers still use it. I do still use it for certain filters, and they have an explore page/hashtag type of thing where you can see snaps of people you don’t follow, and most if not all of them were teens-early 20s. Even the celebs and influencers I follow stopped posting until this year again. *Off topic, but I also noticed when I moved down here that everyone, at least uses their first and last name in their instagram handles, but their finsta will be whatever. My entire life on social media, I never saw that outside of facebook, and even then, at a younger age people may have used nicknames or alias to hide from family members or anyone else.
@@Not_Always Well were you generally familiar with anything popular within that age group at the time? Assuming that you had earlier social media like MySpace and other popular ones in the mid 2000s, and considering how popular tiktok is among the youth, and the whole Facebook/Meta being knowingly damaging to the youth, it isn’t unfathomable.
@@Not_AlwaysSnapchat was incredibly popular when I was like 11/12 years old, a lot of people my age used it, but mostly older teens (back then my sisters were in high school and they and her friends used Snapchat way too much. It died off rather quickly after that thought. When I started high school barely anyone was still using it. Everyone just sticked to instagram, and it was also the beginning of TikTok (I started with TikTok in the second half of 2019, when I was 14/15 yo, in my class there were many people who used it, mostly to make funny videos or dances to share with friends, yet it was still not mainstream. It didn’t blow up until 2020 with the beginning of the pandemic, and it only kept on growing since then)
I didn't understand the appeal of Snapchat 10 years ago, I still don't get the appeal now. If anything it's impressive that Snapchat has lasted this long lol
Finally someone understands that people gravitated to this app in the first place to make cheating easier. Something this video completely dodged. But I guess you had to be around before it got too popular.
yeah I was surprised recently to hear that the number of users is still going up. I used it a lot for years when it was first released, but then FB and Instagram copied the stories feature and my friends used Snapchat less. I also started to get annoyed that the features of the app is not very clear, I wished there was some kind of user manual. I don't need like an entire car manual, but when it was first released it was pretty simple, take a picture or video, set an expiration timer, and send. When you start adding more features and tools for editing, it's cool, but eventually there are so many features that you just don't even know it exists
I really hated when they changed the stories page to a small strip at the top, and then put ads between them when you watch. Discover is worthless, UA-cam has the same stuff with fewer ads. And then there are the teenage girls obsessing about STREAKS
They had their chance when Apple made an offer. Their case is the same for all the other "single app" software companies, which is that there's a limit to how much you can grow the business on a single product. Especially when your product is just a simple chat. The whole value is in the amount of users and the data they generate but finding a way to monetize it is extremely difficult given the simplicity of their service. If they'd become a multi-services platform like facebook did by acquiring single app companies like snap, they would have a chance but until they do, it will keep going down.
All Snapchat is and ever was is a platform to easily take pictures of what’s happening in the moment and sending it to your friends. The fact it started adding more stuff was odd to me
I spent ages fighting them over inadequacies in moderation that resulted in me cold calling a C-Suit exec of theirs and it got basically piss all done.
I'm an avid snapchat user. There's a group that i talk to like family every day. It's a great tool to keep in contact with friends who you may not see often but wish you did. It's great at capturing moments or sending it to people. The "oh i saw that on snap!" Is always cute to hear. My only issue is the ai thing and the frequency of the ads can get annoying
I am a male in my 50s, and I don't use social media.... no great surprise here. Like so many other products and services categories, Snapchat is in a highly competitive and volatile business. One minute, you are the hot thing, the next minute a competitor adds a new feature, or popular influencers speak negatively against you or very positively about a competitor. The audience/customers generally are interested in keeping up with what's new, with little or no brand loyalty.
oddly enough I think it is pretty popular with zoomers and younger generations in the US. it is also from my subjective experience, seemingly pretty popular in Australia and New Zealand for whatever reason. Finally (again from my subjective experience) it seems to be almost completely unused by those that are not in the US, Canada, NZ and Australia
The only reason I use Snapchat is because it’s so easy to quickly take photos of your day and send them to your girlfriend, but all this extra BS like the AI, paid membership, stories, etc is quickly making me lose appeal in the app.
I can't help but wonder if the feature copying by Instagram will eventually become a case study for the impact of emerging technology on the intellectual property system.
The only social media I use is Facebook, for my close friends and family, but mainly groups for my interests like a mechanics group or a guitar and music group. I never used Snapchat or Instagram. I have no idea how Snapchat even works. Born in 1997, I grew up with social media but never cared about it.
Never used Snapchat since only people I knew using it was for sexting than anything else. During that time if I wanted to communicate then it was through Messenger/traditional texting while now it's more Discord.
i haven’t actually sent a snapchat in probably over a year. but i do sometimes occasionally watch peoples stories or look at my flashbacks. it was super popular in high school (‘14-‘18) idk if there’s enough info on it but i’d love a video on yikyak. omg so much high school drama was on yikyak
Don't see how Snapchat is still in business considering their main feature was allowing 13-17 year-olds to post things that are a good argument for smartphones being 18+ devices
Snapchat is another example of an over valued company. How do you valuate a company that has yet to make any money or has any known plans to? It's Silicon Valley hype that valuates based on number of users. Guess what? I can have the most popular restaurant ever if I offered everyone free food. When it comes time to start charging they may not agree with the price, in fact, they were only coming because it was free.
the problem is that everyone copied Snapchat, almost every social media has story updates which makes the feature less unique.
and less people to react with so, why? Thats how I feel and started using it much less

Snapchat is the preferred platform of internet scammers. If someone tells you to talk on Snapchat, you know to avoid them.
I thought that was Telegram. 😂

So delet
Kinda similar for me. I was an absolute streak fiend in hs '13-'17. Then in college it was actually the main way I talked to friends because everyone had it, and I had an android. So I would text on it, sometimes video call on it, and save memories (so many funny college moments are being saved on a server somewhere at Snap, please don't lose them!) but didn't actually snap as much and never really did the whole streaks thing anymore. Now I snap a few close friends and look at stories but that's about it. I don't intend to delete though.

@@Bendzsike the Windows phone failed, Snapchat won. Simply an idiotic take.
The thing that i can say i despise about Snapchat is the fact that everytime i want to go watch a story it quickly changes into a add friend list and no, you can't turn them off.
I think one of the advantages that Snapchat has in getting it's name spoken and out there a lot more is it's a verb used similar to "I'll Google it" or "I'll tweet about it" (Well, used to anyway) in that you'd say "I'll send you a Snap"
I think they stand better by themselves than by integration like Instagram has, don't think every app needs to be a one-stop-shop so to speak.
As Snapchat's competition was adopting all of its features, they started adding advertising and other stupid crap (looking at you, AI chat bot). All of the social media platforms are bloated with ads and worthless features, but it has become painfully obvious with Snap. Mostly because it was so simple not too long ago.
I will say Snapchat was convenient as a camera app. It was quicker to use than the stock app, at least on android, and much faster for video.
It basically took a screenshot of your phone's camera, not an actual photo

Now you can pay to return it if you miss it. I'm assuming you'd cough up the like $5 for that.
Like every tech "innovation" there's a big bubble of hype on this technology and then once investors realize it can't make any money they jump ship.
I thought it was just me, the incentive to keep streaks is the only reason I use the app anymore, and even then I snap like 3 people and 2 groups
One of Snapchat's greatest moments , is the second Chris D'Elia learned that the messages didn't actually get deleted like he thought................
The fact that someone uses both Facebook and Snapchat is hilarious lol

This company will one day join the non stop list of failed companies.
@@ROMANTIKILLER2 It would just be bought. Snapchat is not going anywhere any time soon, like I said. Too massive of an influence.

Does it replace WhatsApp over there?
TikTok is great for both shortform and recently longform videos. when you have those 3 apps whats the purpose of snapchat? most people already have their family and friends phone numbers, so snapchat is slowly becoming irrelevant, hell even gen alpha the kids from 2012 and after dont even use the app, its "old" to them
your voice is soooo soothing company pan. i enjoy hearing it. makes me feel safe

Some people don't use it for that though
At this point their next big move should just be cloud storage. Snapchat memories is an awesome feature, and after years of use people are gonna have a lot of stuff saved on snapchat that is hard/annoying to move elsewhere. Something akin to icloud or dropbox, just because its all there already and having a separate source of picture storage is always a plus.
You’re right about this! I post Snapchat stories almost every day and haven’t transferred any of my saved memories.
The problem with all companies is greed and ruin their own products
Yeah, but companies gotta make money somehow. All the people they pay and all that web space and moderation costs money. Can't run a business as a public service.
@@aznnp77 they can run as a family friendly business. Pfft 😅
I'm sure the 20% of the company that got laid off, cause there wasn't enough money to keep them, totally agree with that sentiment.
The elephant in the room not mentioned in the video: Snapchat and sexting.
Snapchat is super annoying. If you don't trust someone with nudes you probably shouldn't be sending them to begin with.
It was nice to send nudes and have them disappear after a bit
I agree. I don't understand the appeal of communicating this way but I'm in my 40's...lol...too old for nonsense!

Finally someone understands that people gravitated to this app in the first place to make cheating easier. Something this video completely dodged. But I guess you had to be around before it got too popular.
Lol your right
yeah I was surprised recently to hear that the number of users is still going up.
If they'd become a multi-services platform like facebook did by acquiring single app companies like snap, they would have a chance but until they do, it will keep going down.
they kept changing too much. Also the introduction of the creator tab, where they keep pushing these tiktok influencers on you.
I always found Snapchat to be a Novelty app. Its functions were never gonna be long lasting business venture.
Bruh in 2016 Snapchat was the goat
I actually really like snapchat. It actually allows me to keep in touch with so many people I wouldn't otherwise.
Only keep snapchat for the memories feature if otherwise i wouldve deleted it years ago
Snapchat’s still very useful for sharing moments casually. Less formal than texting, way easier to ignore junk vs. other social media
It's crazy how I can sense when a company isnt doing as well as it once did, and then a see a company man video
i haven’t actually sent a snapchat in probably over a year. but i do sometimes occasionally watch peoples stories or look at my flashbacks. it was super popular in high school (‘14-‘18) idk if there’s enough info on it but i’d love a video on yikyak. omg so much high school drama was on yikyak
Don't see how Snapchat is still in business considering their main feature was allowing 13-17 year-olds to post things that are a good argument for smartphones being 18+ devices
Never got the appeal. People can always screenshot your stuff. Stupid way of trying to flirt I hear constantly "u gott snap?" toolbags.
