- 2023 Nissan Ariya FWD Evolve+ review by The Straight Pipes. The 23 Ariya is putting down 238 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque from a 96kWh battery and one electric battery. At $65,948 CAD, would you take it over the Ioniq 5 or VW ID4?

I'll always appreciate how well you guys show what you're talking about. When you mention the brake pedal moving by itself, my mind goes "oh oh oh lemme see lemme see" and ofc, a perfect StraightPipes clip demonstrating exactly what you guys were talking about comes next. Not just that, the touch screen issues, the rocking back and forth, you guys always do such a great job putting your thoughts to reality. Feel like sometimes it goes unnoticed, I really appreciate it!
This comment means so much to me -yuri
@@TheStraightPipes Ahhh I'm glad, love your stuff guys!!
I want to like the comment but don’t want to mess the perfect no it’s on now :)
They're always fun and practical.
The i3 passing it in the beginning had me dying
YES!!!!!!! XD
Would be cool to see TSP and autofocus collab
Aiyo what da hellllll!
Gotta love an i3 cameo! cult classic already 😂
😭😭😭😭
That BMW driving by in the beginning killed me😂😂
You will be mourned
I hope you get better soon.

just otw to the service center
Love my Ariya Venture +, getting about ~345 miles!!!
Lmfao the drive by bmw was jammin😂
I WOKE UP IN A NEW BUGATTI!!!
Let's be real: the sliding console is for road dome
You sir win the Most Surprising Comment of the Day award
That’s funny cuz ain’t nobody getting road dome in this 🤮
RIP bench seats
Roadside humdinger action
I'm not cool so I didn't know what road dome was. But now I do. You learn something every day.
Love my Ariya. Had it since February, I don't feel it's expensive but I guess most do which Is fine. With the "expensive " cost and low production on them I love that I'm basically the only one with it. Only seem 1 other person with one.
I get compliments especially on the green color I got. Lady followed me in the grocery store to ask me about it a few months ago lol. Was charging next to an EQS SUV today and the girl asked to look inside it and liked my car and I got the number. 😊 Don't even need game with this car it speaks for itself 😅
Hope the raise the price or stop making them so I can continue my fun and being different than the tesla cars on the road. Having so much fun. Best car ever!
Yep. We love our Ariya too. It took me a week or so to get used to driving it, but now that I am, it's super smooth and controllable, and I have no real complaints about it (e.g. I don't make it bounce when stopping like they did in the review, and I have no issue with the steering, I have as much power as I ever need with the FWD, etc).
As for price, we were undecided vs. EV6, Ioniq 5/6, or ID.4, and the prices of the trims we wanted were all very similar. The Ariya was notably nicer & more comfortable than the Ioniq or EV6, and while the UI isn't great, we liked it a lot more than the ID.4. So, we're quite happy with ours, and wouldn't trade for any of those.
Aw! Sorry to hear that. Glad though it sounds like none of you were hurt. We haven't really considered any time wasted so far. Mostly we don't need to anything other than plug it in at home, so we're saving time over having to ever put gas in it. And on a road trip, I like having a bit of a break.
@@Xpr74
Aw so sad! But yeah, being able to charge at home makes a huge difference.@@Xpr74
@@pzokz I just got a Platinum + just a few weeks ago... what is your trick to not make it bounce when you break... Sorry for my English
@@StefQc2k It's just applying the brake pressure slowly/evenly enough. I only bounce on a very sudden stop, and I don't need to do that often because I drive in eStep mode and am leaving enough distance ahead of me that I'm generally mostly using regen braking to slow and stop, which also gives better energy efficiency. Many things about driving the Ariya have gotten a lot better for me the more I've driven it and gotten used to it and developed my feel for how best to apply the pedals.
The BMW I3 rolling by was like 🕺🤸♂️💃😂
Love how Jakob was shitting on it the whole time and Yuri was trying to find the positives 😂
💩😍
As usual
1:04 BMW i3: I Woke Up In The New Bugatti
Was stoked for the Ariya from the looks, but their preorders disappeared super fast and the pricing is insane in its segment.
It costs too much, for sure
im confused that you were stoked by the looks its hideous
@@alalal123421 maybe people have different tastes. What a world, huh
@@rizakatsudon Lol your taste is whack bruh
its crazy prices for a nissan and the range/power....... thats not even considering the wait times. I've not seen a single one on the road yet
Arina charging is lower peak power, but it holds that peak longer. So the charging time on 10%-80% is still quite good.
And you can use cheaper 150kw max stations to do so.
This looks better than most of Nissan's styling for the last 10 years
Love your intro music - every time it's spot on. Never stop
Yuri absolute MVP for bringing up the EQS, had a good laugh at Jakub’s reaction
i3 with more range would be better than most EV's today.
As a former i3 driver, trust me you don’t want that, maybe for exterior but in every other way you don’t want it
@@subbiahpalani how so? I had one and it was pretty great
@Trainer Red agreed. Only thing I didn't like was the low range, and low profile tires. Oh God I've never had so many pothole induced flats before. The car drove excellent and was reliable tho.
@@GaryKetchum808yea the tires were super thin and skinny. Handling and ride quality were not that good. I just wouldn't consider buying the i3 over the Nissan Leaf, Honda Clarity, Chevy Bolt, VW eGolf, Prius, etc.
That i3 edit at the beginning was GOLD
I swear this car has been hyped up for what feels like a decade. Seems like a huge miss for the price.
Y’all missed the chance to say ‘Ariya-going for a drive?’
Trueeee
I really did like the review from the two of you
.
Agreed pretty much with what you said in the video. It's a perfectly adequate car, just WAY too expensive.
Yuri's face when he came to a full stop!😂 15:26
You guys reference arrested development more than anyone else and I'm here for it!
feel like people hate this thing purely for the fact its a nissan
Owner of Mazda MX-30 over a year and know many owning one, not a single problem… really good ev’s!!
It looks nice, has decent range and tech.
It has a nice flat fast charging curve, which is better for long charging sessions as it makes it more predictable. But that's not very good if you want to go charger hopping. That's where you only charge enough to reach the next charging station with roughly 10% battery. Tesla's, Ioniq 5, EV6 and Taycan's are great for this because they hit peak rates aright after plugging in. So if you want to charge to 80% every time, the Ariya is fine. But if you want a quick
UA-cam Actually played the Nissan Ariya ad while I was watching this video. First time that has happened for a vehicle review where an ad for the very same vehicle came on.
LOL! Best part about f the video was the BMW passing at the beginning.😂
Why didn't you guys mention the Model Y at all ? lol
It's still the best due to the charging infrastructure and Tesla has the whole "quirks" of reliability figured out haha
Because that's like twice the price of this.
Even if this thing happened to be worse than an ID4, it would still be way more reliable than anything VW builds.
Not as reliable as Toyota, Honda, or even Mazda. We pretty much all know that Nissan and Infiniti tends to use Renault parts in some of their cars
@@jonlosito2004 completely agree. It will be more reliable than a VW, but that's not saying it will be reliable haha.
@@anthonykiedis1765 yea I understand that part. My Mom does NOT like Volkswagens because of that.
I think I saw just 1 here in SF bay area a few months back. I see like 20 model Y in under 5 mins almost every day on the highway.
Damn... indeed the price makes it fall apart. It's a good looking car, one of the best looking in it's class... but that is just too much money.
The Beemer i3 zooming buy took me all the way out.
It's better looking than the current BMW, Lexus & Mercedes offerings👍
Great video. Was hoping you’d talk about charging the car at home.
cut the price by 1/2 and you got yourself a deal lol
This car should be cheaper than a Sentra? Wow
Greedy people want everything to be as cheap as 1 dollar 😂
I have a revolutionary idea you can pass along to any interior designer you run into. Put the infotainment screen on some sort of gimbal so that it doesn't move with the car when driving, it floats like a steadycam. I'm willing to bet it would way easier to use the touchscreen. You're welcome.
Come to think of it you could do all that in software so easily. Just a couple of accelerometers and simple software. Some one prototype it, patent and make millions.
Chinese market luxury cars are already putting the screens on robotic arms so they turn to face whichever front occupant is using it, stabilization doesn't sound like a massive step from that.
This is the best intro ever in the beginning of 0:30 to 0:51 I like how they laugh 😂😂
It is a great design inside and out (except for the needlessly complicated tech), and I hope they sell a ton of them. Nissan is on a roll and they need this to succeed so it's nice to see they put out a great effort. "Cement Grey" is everywhere and joins the group of too many other 'greys'. Sad. The original Nardo Grey on the Audis started it all (I think) and it seems like all Civics are covered in it now. Blah. You guys do a great job of reviewing cars and I always tune in. Keep up the good work!
The dealership near me had one AWD Ariya for sale at 56k. I just don't understand how they want folks to move into these cars when they cost over fifty thousand dollars.
I doubt they can make large number of these vehicles at this time. In the dinosaur-fuel world, Ford is totally incapable of satisfying demand for the Mavericks. The story is they did not think it would be so popular.
Really wanna get one
That canadian tire is by my place. So cool to see you in my area
Hamilton collecticon every long weekend
Where ? Would love to meet you guys ? At that canadian tire ?
Yesss, Ioniq 5 ICCU is a major, major problem that seems to be impacting a large % of the cars as they reach the 1 year mark. The ICCU fuse will blow and leave you stranded, unacceptable risk for me with a toddler.
how is that interface "laggy???" I think some mistake (useless) animation frills for perceived lagginess.
They had some decent lease deals in NJ where no sales tax on Evs
Played the first few seconds of this in the thumbnail and the music alone brought me here. Then the review made me stay. Good job here guys.
Thank you
Worse than ID4 you say? Cant wait to watch this!
Lol idk why that's the title, the entire video was mostly positive. They even dunked on the id4.
That’s why it’s a question. The answer isn’t always yes on this channel 😂
5:09 to 5:39 I don’t know why but Nissan Ariya look pretty and also the interior look so way future the button the gear shift and the driver steering look 10/10 😎💯👑
I should be getting one to review here soon!
"EV system hot" got me rolling for some reason
I think Hyundai acknowleged the 12volt drain but dont know if the service bulletin is out for Canada yet
You can change if you want estep to start, next time you start.
Y'all didn't even mention the Model Y but it's in your video title?
That reverse sound is the same as my Leaf!
This cars look, have grown on me.
What song is that in the beginning?
A few of my friends have ID4s and yeah, other than the dumb window switches it's a really nice car.
VW's infotainment is bad in all its current designs. I suspect the fact that some people single out the ID.4 for criticism might be reflective of a general antipathy toward EVs among a certain reactionary subset of consumers.
I wish it (and the Ariya) had one-pedal driving to a full stop. The LEAF had that. But for some reason, all VWAG cars (VW, Audi, Porche, etc.) lack one pedal driving as a driver-configurable setting.
@@mikefarrington7141 Agree. I was shopping for an EV for myself after my wife had already gotten one, so I was accustomed to 1PD. ID.4 was one of the models I test drove. The lack of 1PD and the terrible interior controls were my two main reasons for disqualifying it. Otherwise it was a very nice vehicle.
Cope harder
I'm 6'5",and my wife is 5'5"...no other electric car fit us both as well as our 2021 ID4 does. The window switches don't bother me...95% of the time I'm only operating the front windows anyway. The climate control buttons are a little quirky, but you get used to it after a while. We usually just set the auto climate to 70° and let the car do the work.. The car is super comfortable, has decent power, and has been very reliable in the two years we've owned it. It really doesn't deserve all the negativity.
Is there any straight pipes on this car?
Love my ioniq 5. No 12v issue for me.
Welcome to the future malaise era
Got a commercial for Nissan before the video. Lol. I've been curious to see what this thing would be like. I used to sell Nissan, but quit before we got these.
This is a good looking crossover EV.
ID4 looks ok if boring.
Model Y does NOT look good. At all.
Pretty sure the arm rest goes back because there's a hidden storage box/drawer that comes out in the centre of the dash.
It's just a drop-down bin in the car they were testing and not the fancy motorized hideaway storage accessible via button. I can't tell if it's lacking in Canada or something, because they had the top trim AWD model.
@@mikefarrington7141 no, theirs was the top trim fwd version. I don't think that it would be exclusive to the awd version though so it's probably just a canadian thing
I went to test drive this at my local dealership and it turned out the AWD version they had didn’t work because it had a bad 12 v battery and they need to get a new one from Nissan. They said they’d call but I haven’t heard back. I didn’t like the capacitive buttons on the dash, center console and steering wheel. The lantern effect might look nice at night but in the daylight it looked cheap which is a problem because this is an expensive car. I saw it on the freeway a few days ago and I thought it looked great. It has a volume knob and a rear wiper so they didn’t get everything wrong.
I've only seen it on the nissan dealer lot and broken on the side of the road with hazards on
Finally test drove the AWD this weekend. Top trim. It’s very nice over all, just too expensive.
i cant believe car companies still have not learned that the consumer does not want haptic buttons. should have died with the cadillac cue system
At least they didn’t slather it in piano black…
The funny thing is that companies who did it way back in like 2012-2013 learnt from their mistakes and later put physical buttons back in later cars, while other companies are only trying haptic stuff now.
Guys make a video about Mitsubishi outlander I want to buy it and need your opinion
Maybe the brake paddle movement has something to do with then brake light situation
pedal
No, the pedal movement, which is only present on the highest regenerative braking setting on, it's because that setting blends mechanical breakes under some circunstances too, like when the battery is full, to give a consistent regenerative braking force everytime, no condition dependent. So in that setting the pedal moves back and forth to physically represent the equivalent amount of mechanical brakes a each given time.
If you want only regenerative braking withoit mechanical brakes blending you've to use B mode instead and the brake pedal will never physically move.
Can yall review the m3 touring 🙏🙏
I think the Ariya and the ID4 are both quite nice...beauty is subjective i guess
Front end reminds me of a Storm Trooper helmet
I wonder how many times you changed the title on this video.
3 so far
is the Ariya the replacement for aging Morano
This thing only has FWD at 65K CAD?
Why the ID4 hate? I think the ID4 is a good car
Hehe ok there thomas t
You are the only one.
Can you review the BZ4X or Solterra?
Subaru Canada said no. Bring it up with Julie
Y’all should test drive classic cars more but I guess it’s to hard to do that since a lot of them are considered gems and are jacked in prices
We’ve done a bunch. They unfortunately get no views. Even though we love driving them
What kind of watch is Jakub wearing?
So crazy idea that you might need some (most definitely need) sponsor for but how about going back and forth between two major cities and testing out different charging network to see whose the best and whose the worst. EV are taking off like crazy in my next of the wood (the fricking police actually have a Ford Mustang Mach-e patrol cars) and these charging network issue scared me from pursuing an EV when I got my new (to me) car
We did it years ago in 2 Ioniq’s. It was terrible. Still is
@@TheStraightPipes I saw that video but the network has gotten bigger than then (hopefully) and it should (in theory) be a different experience now
But has it gotten better
The market us ripe for a $30k 2wd "suv" (we all know they are basically tall wagons/hatches). I hope GM can at keast start getting us there, they are the inly ones i know of that us even planning to continue offering a $30k EV
Chevrolet is estimating (we'll see when it properly comes out) a $30k starting price for the new Equinox EV, that should be a mass seller.
I have a 2022 AWD id4 and it works very well. Aside from the dumb window switches the id4 is good.
How are the volume and temp sliders at night
@@TheStraightPipes
Honestly we hit the climate button to full screen it and adjust the climate there. I really don't even think about using the sliders. It's my wife's car and she isn't a tech nerd like me, and so I think it's more than fine for regular folks. I know earlier models had issues with the infotainment system, but hers works fine. She had been using android auto, but now she just uses the built in navigation. Again me being the tech nerd I think android auto is better, but she's fine with the stock system. Maybe you guys should start incorporating your wives, sister, mom's, or a female friend that isn't into tech to give their reviews on daily drivers.
This guy gets it
Fr, worst part about this channel is the climate control and screen stuff whining, I just skip that section at this point because its just complaining. Other than that great though!
@GAV321 I know, right? People don't even use the climate controls or infotainment screen!
its a more refined car within the segment, but killed by low production rate and then led to insane markup.
It is amazing on how Japanese car makers are behind in battery range or EV car production
My Ariya does more than 320 miles easily, that's current standards range to me.
I'm here to watch because the title told me so
Nice car if it were $45K. Is the new normal that only the top 10% can afford a set of wheels?
Bro I bursted out when the i3 came by😂😂😂
What's the porpoise of that sonar sounding exterior sound. Is this a submersible vehicle? It's the same color as a dolphin, cement gray my azz! COOL! Diver down.
I woke up in a new Bugatti... First time ever during horsepower and torque a car has passed you that you have allowed to make it to the final cut... And the audio was blurred I couldn't quite tell what Aria was trying to do when you launched?
They kept hitting the voice control button, probably on purpose.
The "Ionic 05' 12 volt battery issue SEEMS to be related to the HUGE information requests OTA. There is a fix now/on the way. And NO EV owner should travel anywhere without a small 12volt jumper pack. My Kia Niro[2019} has the nasty habit of draining the 12volt battery with the inside lights off, if I leave the doors open for a length of time, as in home car wash, detailing day. That is my only gripe.
This is what Hyundai wants folks to believe, but there is really no way for the API requests to cause the ICCU fuse to blow while driving.
Hyundai also claims they’ve fixed the API call issue and limiting it to like 30 a day, yet 12v batteries keep dying.
There are two issues at post. The big one being ICCU failure.
2023s havent been having this issue so far
what's up with the fishbowl???? gotta get those 'dows tinted stat!
The best thing about this car is the lofi ad Nissan put out.
The dash looks like it’s made of Trex decking.
OMG, I still can’t believe they named the car after my name lol (spelled differently, but pronounced exactly the same).
Great video though 👍🏼
I've been saying for about two years...this is the best looking EV...I have not changed my opinion so far.
I would detest the lack of physical, logical knobs and buttons for hvac and radio.
Some slightly older Subaru Outbacks drain their 12v batteries if not used daily.
Same issue with a friend's 2021 Toyota Venza hybrid...drain their 12v battery.
LOL.. He just traded for a 2023 4. Runner to get Toyota's OLD tech, before the new model.
This was shoved down my throat in advertising. The motto was, don’t buy an EV for the E, buy it because it pins you to your seat.. cringey… then the GTR update… what are car companies doing?
😂🤣
I'd definitely get the Model Y. Nissan missed the mark with the pricing. I was expecting 5 to 8 grand more than the Leaf.
This is a completely different beast than the LEAF.
Very nice design Nissan E 2023
Nah. This is still infinitely better than the laughingstock bz4x and rz450e
Saw one today. A 🤷♂️ reaction to be honest. Very expensive in the UK
Wow, I didn’t know that Beavis and Butthead existed in real life 😂
