Translation Notes HÁVAMÁL ,Hávamál A poem found within the Poetic Edda, a collection of Old Nordic poems. The title translates to "sayings of the high one," and the contents of the poem are attributed to Odin. The Japanese translation, when not simply titled "Hávamál," is known as "the song of Odin" or "the proverbs of Odin." Hávamál is a gnomic poem, meaning that its verses are meant to serve as lessons or advice on customary topics, such as the laws of hospitality for both guest and host.
Also heads up, in the last season thorfinn agreed to go back with leif but ended up going back to save askeladd. He failed cuz of canute killing askeladd, so he aggresively attacked canute, the new king. His punishment was that he was taken away by the guards and as you might have guessed been sold as a slave.
I love the way Einar's screams of grief and anger fade out to the next scene transition with him on a slave ship. His scream literally merges with the sounds of the ice and waves
The first like half of the episode with Einars back story was actually anime original. We were only told the backstory of Einar in the manga, not shown it. Everything up until the boat is anime original. Brave choice to start the season with original content. It worked well.
Thorfinn was around 17-18 years when askeladd died. You can calculate this based on the years the events are happening (thorfinn is born in 996 and askeladd dies in 1014)
As a manga reader, I'm beyond excited to see all of these incredible character moments play put in animated form. The soundtrack seems to be in its full glory as well
Vinland Saga is a historical manga. Meaning the plot takes place in a setting related to the past events. Author, MAKOTO YUKIMURA, is very faithful to history. Which is why he includes details like drinking liquor to bring colour to the skin. RECAP *King Sweyn(Svhen) of Denmark offered Askeladd a stark choice: the security of his homeland Wales, or the life of his master, Prince Canute(Can-oot). Askeladd's answer was immediate: He struck off Sweyn's head. The meeting of military leaders erupted into chaos after this act of regicide(the action of killing a King), but Canute recognized the play at hand, and killed Askeladd himself, thereby accomplishing Askeladd's aim. Canute immediately took the throne. But after witnessing the end of his father figure, Thorfinn was left empty inside. He was eventually sold into slavery to work on a farm.*
7:09 When I watch this part I thought the symbol of three red flowers represented Einar, Lotta and there mom. The three of them still standing surrounded by soot and decay even if Lotta and Einar mom are dead, they're still with Einar. More representing the love and passions of the red flowers that they've grew with the farm is everlasting then fate/death but that still could be that symbolism as well.
I think both interpretations work. Like I said in the video, I think it could be his mom, sister, and their dad who died a long time ago. In which case it would make sense (maybe) why one of the flowers looks further away than the other two. And yeah, it’s often that red flowers represent death, but like you said (and it’s often overlooked with this sort of symbolism) it’s doesn’t HAVE to be death, it could be fate or love or other such things
13:00 btw I’ve almost drowned before and imo drowning is one of the best ways to go, after the initial realization that your drowning you just go numb, u can’t feel any pain, and you slowly lose consciousness. It’s like falling asleep
@@legokangaroo5010 I will say getting too the numb sucks tho, your lungs will feel like they’re on fire, your going to panic like hell, but once you go numb you fall asleep pretty much
the mangaka has studied so much so that even the little details that you point out like drinking of liquor to improve their "color". man i love this series.
Thanks for clarifying, I think its just been a long time since I watched last, and I got the events scrambled in my head. I'll make sure I'm on the same page for next time
You for split second where confused about Einar name being born from north england. Short version it has been settled by germanic decendants for over 100s of years, so it wouldn't be uncommon to find scandinavian family in Britannia. But since this events are Cnut era they might have been settled there by their father who was given land for service. (ofc since this anime, this is just all speculation of mine)
Really good first episode. The first half was orginal content and the rest was manga content. Also as a swede, it´s weird hearing old Norse in an Icelandic accent. Considering is an anime.
Oh shit, I didn't realize it was on Crunchyroll too, I only ever saw it listed for Netflix. Netflix subs were decent, but there were some VERY clear oddities in it, to be sure.
they didn't go at end of the season 1. Because Thorfinn attacked the King as punishment he was sold as slave (Best Canute could do for him for high treason)
Honestly i'm upset it's not on Prime. I thought whatever subtitles they used for season 1 on amazon were the best version i saw for season 1. Hopefully whoever worked on them is working on them for crunchyroll or whoever.

Thorfinn never went with Leif he attacked Canute at the end but instead of getting executed he got made a slave but Leif is still looking for him
Yes, thank you for the correction, idk how i got the idea that he left with him, I must have imagined it
@@BOLDcast because they were on the boat about to leave when Thorfin left him, and they imagined Vinland and all of that
That’s where I got confused I think. I guess I just mixed up the order of events

That’s really interesting! Thanks for the additional info
Yutaka Yamada is the composer of Vinland Saga for season 1 and 2. He is also famous for composing the whole soundtrack of Tokyo Ghoul.
That's fucking amazing

True, he was 16 right after the timeskip but some more time passed between then and the end of Season 1
how old is he right now in season 2?

The poor guy struggling to remember that Thorfinn was arrested and didn't go with Leif in the end of S1 haha
yeah XD
yeah big oof on my part, apologies
I'm gonna look back on that real quick to refresh myself
What? Thorfinn never left with Leif. He dipped to see Askeladd die in his arms and then the season ended and we dont know what happened
Yeah idk where i got that from
sorry for misremembering
@@BOLDcast lol. no worries
It was not about boat going faster, it was so that she doesn't infect other "cargo". Same policy later in slave ships from Africa to America
I see, that makes much more sense
Amazing how heavily invested I got with Einars story, everything from the visuals to the music was peak.
So glad Thorfinn and Einar met, lets goooo

Makoto Yukimura: Yes
Accurate
Personally Vinland saga is in my top 10 fictional stories ever told. The manga is top three for me.
bodes well for future eps then. I've literally only heard good things about this series
It's top 3 Manga for me as well. Such a great series.
Its my favourite show not just in anime
the mangaka has studied so much so that even the little details that you point out like drinking of liquor to improve their "color". man i love this series.
Peakland Saga is back and finally the Farmland Arc is gonna be animated. The adaptation is already incredible from the first episode.
Thorfinn was sold as slave at the end of season 1 for attacking the king(Canute),Lief lost him again
Thanks for clarifying, I think its just been a long time since I watched last, and I got the events scrambled in my head. I'll make sure I'm on the same page for next time
Well this is a good way to hear that the episodes are coming out lol
Indeed
That one piece of cgi with the horse at the start looked pretty good to be honest
Man they make me cry the first ep for both season 1 and 2, its not fair!!!
The music is by Yutaka Yamada the GOAT. Also gave music in Tokyo Ghoul.
i love when series take risks on how to tell a story, and this episode was beautiful.
Really wanna see how different Thorfinn is from the last season and how will he b involved in the plot more really hyped for this show and reactions.

Thorfinn left with Leif but ran back to the court and was then sold into slavery as punishment for attacking Canute
