Literally got my apprenticeship because I walked in trying to sell comic book paintings and the owner liked my paintings and asked me if I wanted to learn to tattoo.
Took me 5 years to even get a job as a shop manager. Took another 3 years of doing my normal shop duties to have my shop owner finally approach me with the idea of apprenticing. It's tough to get in, but if you're really passionate about tattooing and not making a celebrity of yourself or something, you can do it. You really have to humble yourself and accept the fact that there is so much to learn in the world of tattoos and tattooing. Great video!
I have gone to 12 shops since i lost my apprenticeship because of the pandemic trying to get a new one and i have a portfolio that everyone says is really good but no one is looking now because of how shitty things are any advice? Should i just try to apply at a shop? Did 1/2 year of a apprenticeship and over 30 tatttoos on people
Hello and thank you so much for this video! As someone who hopes to become a tattoo apprentice once I finish with art school, it's incredibly helpful. I get it if you don't have time to answer this question, but I'm wondering, would you prefer for someone who is seeking an apprenticeship to call or email ahead of time, or just show up in person with a portfolio?
Show up in person. And not necessarily with portfolio first but just shop up. Email or phone call might work if someone is advertising that they are looking for one.
Tattooing is not a job, side gig or hobby. It's a lifestyle. If you're not willing to sacrifice your family, friends, and everything else you do, forget it. I work my ass off at the shop, come home and draw all night. On my only day off I work so that I can buy food for myself and then draw when I'm off.
Just as a general artist i can tell you its very clear when people have traced not learned the right way or are skipping things to do art: Guys like greg land in comics fr example (google if you want a good idea of a bad artist that people would think is good) looks shitty to a trained eye because its obvious he traced (and traced porn) and has learned nothing of how to create dynamics with drawing to make things stand out. To quote doug stanhope i have a camera for realism. though dont get confused over say someone with a realistic style rooted in the art side you have to kind of break rules to get a realistic look such as ignoring a lot of things and focusing more than need be on others. Its a bit like say someone with a unique style : you can tell if that style is rooted in decades of doing things right or not
I’ve been recommended to just show up to a shop with my unfinished portfolio (it contains a bunch of old work that I want to redraw and edit and some work that I had free handed) but I’m not sure if that’s a smart thing to do. I was thinking I can walk in and ask what they would like to see more of and take some advice. Should I keep working on the portfolio or is it okay to show what my progress is looking like? Thank you!
I went to an arts high school and was an art major in college. I've been working on my portfolio but don't know how to approach a shop about an apprenticeship. Especially during these pandemic times ☹
If I have a different art style than what’s mainly displayed in a shop, could it still be a good fit for an apprenticeship? I am willing to learn anything and everything
I know how to draw but i know I'm not the best but i love all kinds of art .but not really interested in apprenticeship.there are ways to make money threw art .yes it would be nice to make money for the art that i do but. I DO IT CUZ I LOVE IT.I DONT KID MY SELF. I TATTOO FOR FUN OF IT .I MAKE MONEY BUT NOT ENOUGH TO PAY THE BILLS YOU KNOW..BUT WISH WHO EVER WANTS TO THE BEST OF LUCK.
I think tattooing is cool, but I want long hours of no customers, and intermittent periods of too many customers not enough time, I want to tattoo on strangers who I wouldn't necessarily hang out with that has odd body odor and a wierd sense of humor. I like to draw, and would like to do a job where I don't have retirement and wonder from month to month whether I might have to go back to driving a taxi at night so that I can keep tattooing. I want to clean up after other people as well as myself. Should I tattoo?
I do not have a passion for tattoos. I have equiptment but I'm in no hurry to use it. I just want to learn how to be a good artist. If people enjoy it than they should be open to sharing anything that they have and have a good attitude. I just started drawing and the first thing I did was get a file system for my drawings.

That lucky and probably great timing as well
That's great and I recognize your name from artmesomthings streams

It took you 8 years of work to start from scratch with the real job?
@@Simone-xe9cw For me yeah. Your mileage may vary.

Give it some time. People have other things to worry about at this pandemic / postpandemic time.
Thank you 😄 this video was useful for me!

Sacrifice family, friends and everything else is a bit extreme... but everything else is very well said.
That sweater 👌
I see so many realism artists that basically just trace. How
does that fit in as far as drawing?
In our opinion it is a skill but not art from creative point of view
theres nothing to "draw" anymore....we have the internet now.....maybe you should take a horse and cart to work.....forget that we now have cars

Just approach. Send a message that you would like to come by and if it's cool then go to the place and have a talk and see what happens
Where did you get your sweayshirt❤
At @parca_co

If it can be applied as a tattoo or some details could show that it would be beneficial for tattoo work then sure. Still it depends on situation.

Well if you are going to tattoo, you should get tattooed. They go hand in hand
