Wow! That German Sampler just blows me away! It’s amazing how many motifs she got onto that fabric! I loved the upside down, right-side up, sideways approach she had to reaching her fabric. And the colors on the back side! I could not believe the vibrancy of those colors! It will be amazing to see what you do with it- I know you will honor the maker in every way. You look great- obviously the time on the road is agreeing with you! So glad to hear that Mike is writing again. I’ve been waiting for another book! Take care, be careful out there on the road and drive safely. Love to both of you!❤
Beautiful scenery!thank you for sharing that!!! I love your German Sampler can’t wait Till it is all charted. Good luck to Mike on writing his new book. Be safe.
Hi Jan...loved everything you shared...from all the travel pictures to new patterns...the German sampler is delightful...there are so many possibilities with that sampler...wishing you and Mike the best and happy stitching ❤❤
Really enjoyed the road trip; beautiful country and loved the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings. The antique sampler was amazing; no starts and stops in thread!Thank you!!
Fabulous road trip video. I lived in WA state for 12 years & never had the chance to see Mt Rainer up close. Beautiful! Best of luck at Needlework Market. Love all your new releases!
I love the Saxonian/ German Sampler. My mind got very busy in interpreting the different symbols. This was the first time that this happened to me. I cannot wait to see what you will do with it! I also love your video clips at the beginning. It is so nice to see these place that I will most likely never see myself. Take care and have a good journey forward!
What an amazing adventure you have embarked upon! Thank you for sharing it with us, on top of all the wonderful stitching. Safe travels on your next journey!
Hi Jan, from me here in South Africa. A super video as always. Enjoy every moment of being 'on the road', I love seeing the inserts of your travelling. WOW, the sampler is incredibly beautiful!
I live in the Seattle area and absolutely LOVE it here. I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed your time here and the time with your children. Enjoy The Grand Canyon it is BEAUTIFUL! I love all the new releases. I didn’t know your husband was a writer, I’ll have to track down his works. Enjoy your time in Arizona and Galleria.
Became a little homesick when I saw your pictures of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. We lived there from 1998-2001 and absolutely loved it. Would have stayed there forever but my hubby took a job elsewhere. One of the prettiest places on earth. I’m so glad you enjoyed the Northwest and got to spend time with your boys.
I can't believe how busy you have been with new designs and antiques to chart and, and, and! The Mexican sampler is gorgeous and I'm looking forward to your floral and Sunshine series. And ooh my, the German antique! I also loved seeing your travelogue clips at the beginning. I'm in Texas, where we're having record-breaking temps every d**n day, and the sight of all that wild green forest and rainforest was so refreshing. I had to pause t write this and now I get to tour Acorns & Threads vicariously. Take care and take plenty of water!
Oh my; what a stunning sampler; can't wait for you to offer it for reproduction as I already stitched two Saxony German samplers similar in length and would love to add this one as the crowning jewel. Enjoy your travels! Your photos are such a treat.
So good to see you again Jan and your German Sampler looks beautiful. It looks like you both are going to enjoy life and have a lot of wonderful adventures ahead. Also let us know how Mike is doing with his writing and maybe he will let us know a little bit about the story. Please keep up with your video's because I do love watching the beginning to see places that I may never see in person.
Be safe on the road. I missed your regular reports. I have never been to Idaho or Washington so I am travelling vicariously with you. Your photography could be so many cross stitch patterns.
That’s actually what I started with in designing, making my photographs into full coverage pieces. But I started doing more traditional designs and haven’t done any more of those. I have a couple of them on my Etsy shop, but not even all of the full coverage ones I had done.
Beautiful views in your travels! I love your new releases, I’m looking forward to the hydrangea and the Hall in particular. As for the German Sampler, just wow! A quick plea: if you decide to chart “as is”, I,e, with some of the motifs upside down, can you please consider positioning so that it can be upended? As much as I like keeping to historical detail, upside down things give me headaches for some reason! Good luck with the charting and enjoy your next travels.❤
Hi Jan! So wonderful to see green scenery after all these triple-digit degree days here in Texas. Sounds like you and Mike have had a blast during your time away and that retirement has been good for Mike's creativeness as well. So love Floragraphica II Hydrangea. Congrats on your first magazine publication! What a beauty you found in the German sampler! I love the back side of it with all the wonderful colors. I love the audience response to the back side as well. Happy travels my friend!
What an astounding Sampler! I think that's the oldest Sampler I've seen yet, and the colors on the back, and the design, WOW!!! Very similar to today's Samplers, really, and to think we are all stitching pretty much the same way! Her designs seem as if they may have been quite modern back then....I'm not sure? Just gorgeous! That is on Sampler I really do want to stitch! I cannot wait until you release it! You've got a huge job ahead of you to chart it, first! Wow!!! Plus the fact it is dual stitched! I can't get over that! She had to use pin stitches to start and stop, I am assuming..... Congrats on your new releases as well!
I will defiantly be buying the German sampler when it comes out. Many of my ancestors came from Germany, and they would have been there in the 1700's. The family moved out in the mid 1800's. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know.
Oh, my goodness! Your German antique sampler is stunning. I can't wait to see you reproduction of this piece. I especially love the colors on the backside! Thanks for sharing it with us!
What a treat…and sensory overload! Love your new releases but, oh my, that Saxon sampler! So glad you’re charting the back…can’t wait to see it released. Have fun on the road.
How wonderful to see you again! Your opening video - there are no words for Mother Nature's beauty. A 300 year old sampler?!?!?! Wow. I can't wait to meet you at Galleria! Be careful on the road and congrats to Mike for returning to writing. Stay blessed!
Oh Jan!!! You two are going to have such wonderful times - sites to see, flowers, animals, different things you have never seen before, people you meet on the way, the peacefulness of nature. We did it and never regretted a moment!!! Thanks for sharing.
Nice you could be with your father in law. I have family in Surprise also. They said it’s been awful there with the heat…🥵 Stay safe in your travels. The German sampler is lovely.
We were so glad to get out of the Phoenix area and away from the heat. We were basically holed up in the house for most of the time, only making brief forages out for groceries! Lol
@@JanHicksCreates I heard you say you like the temperatures in the 70’s and 50’s. We are on the Central Coast of California…. Right on the edge…those are our temps. Morro Bay! Enjoy your travels while you can.
That sampler is amazing! I can’t even begin to figure out how you’ll reproduce it! So many little sections would be beautiful to stitch. I especially love the angels-they are up to no good 😂 You and Mike look so very happy in the beautiful filming of where you’ve been!💕
“Those angels are up to no good!” Love it!” I think that needs to be my new mantra! Lol. It will be very interesting to chart, and yes, I can see a LOT of smalls coming from this as well! Stay tuned!
Omgosh Jan!! I’m sooo geekd about Jacob-Palooza. I can’t wait to see what you do with that absolutely gorgeous new sampler because I know I can handle that!! ::laughing and big huge hugs::
Glad you made it safely to Arizona! That sampler is incredible! I am very impressed with your plans to chart it. That is a LOT of work! We are still enjoying the weather at Roamers Rest. It will be the first of Sept before we return to the heat. I’m glad to hear Mike is writing again I just finished the trilogy. Will love to get more. Thank you for providing the complete border for the new pattern. I like the idea of doing the border first- saves me from things not matching later! Good luck with your travels . Maybe I’ll see you on the road again. I’m always looking for the local ‘Stitchy stores’ .
Hi Carla! You guys did have a little heat in Portland, though, by the looks of it! But nothing like the craziness here. We did have a few cloudy days from Hilary that brought the temps down somewhat. I am definitely ready to get back to cooler areas! I sure hope we get to meet up somewhere on the road again!
Glad your travels are going well. That Saxon sampler is incredible! Even if you charted it fairly soon, how is it possible that you could stitch it in time for market? Maybe a model stitcher with flying fingers.😊 Always love the videos of your travels.
It would be wonderful if a shop would offer a floss kit with cottage garden threads with your pattern for your floragraphica 2. I would certainly purchase all 4
I plan on speaking with the shops that I know carry these threads to see if they would be interested in offering thread packs. I’ll let everyone know what is arranged.
Glad to see you again and love the travel movie log. How did your kitty fare with all the driving? My first cat loved our drive from Syracuse, NY to Sacramento, Ca. Our current kitty, Skratch did not fare so well when we were driving from Sacrament, CA to Southeast PA--he yowled all the way...each and every mile along the way!!!
Oh, that’s how our male cat was as soon as we put him in the car. I can’t imagine driving with that yowling the whole way across the country! But Nina is super laid-back. We put a box in the back seat and she crawls in that and sleeps most of the time!

Question about the sampler. You talked about charting the colors on the front and also on the back. I assumed they were originally the same color and the front had faded over the years from being displayed.?
@@JanHicksCreates that is why I don't understand why anyone would want a colorway of the faded colors. Anyway, the sampler is in amazing condition and, though I do not stitch samplers, I am excited for the many who will love getting the chart for this in the future and know how much work charting it will be for you.
Do you plan to chart it reversible? Or with usual cross stitch? It is lovely. I lived in Germany twice and would like to do a German sampler but that one is very long and a big commitment.
No, I have no interest in learning the reversible stitch especially since most people wouldn’t frame it so you can see both sides. That is the reason that I have decided to do medium and small samplers as well as the full-size, because that size just doesn’t suit most people. I totally get that!

Question about the sampler. You talked about charting the colors on the front and also on the back. I assumed they were originally the same color and the front had faded over the years from being displayed.?
Yes, that is exactly what happens. The colors fade from exposure but the colors on the back, since they are protected, don’t.
