I can agree I have one of these and I freaking love it but I mean that's just a personal opinion I kind a wish he had tried out a turbo or even just a better working one
The owner tells you it has a vacuum leak and then you shit on the car for not having enough power yet don't disclose the vacuum leak in your review? You're better than this.
Do you honestly think that what Mr. Regular says about cars in his reviews is supposed to reflect their owners? You people have an odd habit of bashing on the owners that give Mr. Regular their keys, and by doing so providing Mr. Regular with content, and you with entertainment. If what Mr. R meant in the review, or any review, was aimed towards the owner, he wouldnt have any cars to review. Seriously, shame on you.
But he does bash the car's owners in many ways, usually low or mid key. Majority of the time he bashes the culture of the car and it's owners. The people letting Mr. Regular review their cars, KNOW what they're getting into, especially if he really likes or dislikes the car, they fuckin watch this show every week.
Big wheels like those are doubly worse in that the bring up the unsprung mass. Every part of the car, except the wheels, tires, and suspension components immediately connected to them, is supported by the springs. I get that people want to be fancy, but you can be fancy without making the car actively worse, which you do when you fit giant rims, "licorice strip" tires, and doing "lowriders" of various descriptions. The worst are the ones who run on too-tiny wheels with the wheels set like they really need an adjustment, except they do, and you'll go through parts like Benzedrine.
I recently inherited my late father-in-laws 1983 944 5-spd. I had it completely serviced an independent Porsche shop, and my car has NONE of the issues described here. Even though it’s only 150hp, it’s happy to shift at 2500 rpm. My clutch used to grab way up at the top, but the service shop worked it’s black magic and it now grabs at the bottom which makes it a pleasure to drive.
The vacuum leak alone could account for the poor performance. From listening to the engine, I think ignition timing and other settings are also way off.
why would you gear it up in such a stupid way? i mean i get it, somw eheels look nice, but in my opinion, the only reason you go for bigger ones is if you need bigger brakes, which this thing doesn't. so you get a tiny bit more sluggish acceleration and scraping... that's the man's equivalent of high heels, despite them not helping the owner to get laid in any way i guess.
I love the analogy to high heels. Say what you will about heels, but at least they serve a purpose bringing a short girl to eye level. Stupid rims are just stupid.
The clutch pedal FEELS crazy at first, but I've never driven on a more forgiving clutch. I rented one on Turo and was scared to death to stall it in the owners driveway to make everyone nervous; however, I couldn't successfully stall the thing even on serious hills and over 300 miles! That and the accelerator is like nothingnothingnothingNOW it's doing something, then whaaaaa! Thanks for the video, cheers!
I was gonna say the bigger wheels and the fact that the owner of the car said the engine had a vacuum leak may have affected the performance of the car a bit. If everything was perfect and not changed from factory in any way I'm curious how it would perform then. May not be a fast car but now it's slower than it should be. Bigger tire sizes will do it every time.
Why put in big wheels without changing the chassis geometry? They just change the gearing and they scrape. Nice set of 15'' wheels would suffice. Dumb. I have awaited the death of this trend (now exacerbated by stancing) since it's inception, but it's not going away. I'm old. I was alive, when the Ferrari F40 blew everybody away with 17'' wheels.
Exactly, you don't need big wheels to make an old car look good, just a nice design of wheel, like the Fuch wheels fitted to the Turbo Porsches of that era
Heikki Remes decent tires i. a 15" size are getting rare, i would be happy to stick with stock size wheels on my car (93 mazda) but have 16" wheels for the tire selection.
These cars were not particularly fast when new but they weren't bad. They were solid little sports cars with no little quirks that I recall. The turbo version was kind of all or nothing but that was the tech of the day. Turbo lag, then bam. It sounds like this car has some issues that need some work before you could get a feel for what it really was.
That's not a proper 944. That's an abortion. The wheels alone give it an extra inch in clearance ( like the suspension blocks in post '75 MGB's) phone-dial wheels (or cookie-cutter Fuchs on pre 86's only) Helen Keller could carry momentum through corners in a 944... and that is their virtue. This review cemented the awesome comedic value of RCR, whilst demonstrating lack of automotive prowess.
Jack Meoff no disrespect to the owner, but I completely agree... stop spending money on huge rims and tires and give the thing a good mechanical once over. Might be expensive but a car like this deserves it.
I've seen it mentioned before in comments, but Mr. Regular would really benefit from a track day / HPDE. It would really boost confidence and help cut down on some bad habits (crossing arms while steering, etc). Nobody at Jalopnik can hook him up with a track day? It would even make a good video series.
Yes and sharpen up your clutching skills. Please minimize clutch slippage on releasing so you don't damage someone's clutch. Gradual release and/or not rev matching will glaze clutch disc and shorten its life.
I've just realised that the sluggishness that he complains about in the review definitely comes in a great part from the big wheels. I'm not saying that it would be a rocket without them, but it sure would make a difference
I think the bigger wheels and tires the owner has on his 944 may be adversely affecting the gearing and acceleration. They seem to be much larger in overall diameter. I'm sure the acceleration would improve a bit if the stock overall diameter was retained. No, it wouldn't improve the large gaps between gears, but it would improve willingness to rev.
Seriously, this car is not a good example of the N/A series of the 944, my 2.5 944 has a much tighter turn in and does not bog like that, I've power shifted in 2nd and 3rd and gotten wheel spin, that is one sketchy ass 944, sounds good though.
I'd bet a box of Timmies donuts that the vacuum leak is why it's so sluggish. I know it's comparing apples to oranges, but my 84 Cutlass had a leak last weekend and it went dead lean and was way down on power.
Those wheels are KILLING ALL THE TORQUE. UGH. And I bet the vacuum leak is killing the +30hp the S has over the regular one. Wow this is bad for me, I ranted on 2 of RCR's vids. Thats how you know he gives quality content.
He hit it on the head about not liking to take off at low rpm, you've gotta use the clutch a little. With stock wheels it definitely doesn't loose that much rpm when shifting.
love that he had his key in his right hand.... then they cut out the part of the video (29 seconds) where he attempts to stick it in the wrong side. lol 😂
This car is in "cat killed poor condition". My Porsche, not in the greatest condition but was never SLOW. Could have pulled into that intersection in first, stayed with the flow easily. Fifth gear, if I ever was in fifth gear I would be going at-least 65 mph. A good 944 would have him, playing the clutch and second gear FLYING off the start.
I have an 89 944 base. I love it for what it is. An icon vintage driving experience. With 50/50 weight distro the handling is great. Disappointed in the review. Typically love your videos.
Fair is fair...the shift light at 4K should be used as the indicator to hit the accelerator, as peak torque is at 4250. You take it to about 5k or a bit more and shift and now you will be just before 4k again in that higher gear and ready for another gears pulling. You never use fifth in regular driving...maybe on the freeway. You use third and fourth constantly in an s, you need to be just on the car, flogging it. I owned a 944 turbo, great car, but I actually think I like the s more, for the sounds, and because you can really flog an s and it will respond, while if you flog a turbo it might not until it goes off at full boost and then it’s a handful.
had the 924s tightest fucking car I've ever driven ,the a/c didn't work and neither did the passenger side window, I did go 130mph on the freeway once, pretty reliable car.
My 944S is definitely a little quicker than that, not by much, but on a full pull I do 0-60 in about 7 seconds. I need to know his exhaust setup tho, that sounds amazing.
I won't comment on whether or not the car was "broken" however, if you put 18 wheels on a Honda Civic its gears are going to get "longer" and there will be a larger RPM gap between shifts. Why wasn't this accounted for? I mean. If you're going to review the car, then take into account the things an owner does to alter the experience. They came with what.. 15's? Yeah, it's gonna feel sluggish.. Possibly not handle very well. OBVIOUSLY. It scraped going over ant hills...
To Catch a Predator: Regular Car Edition. After the drive, Mr Regular says "welp ur free 2 go" and the car owner gets tackled by a guy in a ghillie suit and fifteen cops
Doing the "10 and 2" thing might help your spirited driving form....the "9 and 3" thing is because of air bag design, but it's really not ideal for spirited driving, especially with a stick. You can get away with it if you have floppy paddles I suppose, but you might find "10 and 2" easier when your making haste even though you risk hand damage if the air bag goes off.
I think if you got the opportunity to drive a properly sorted 944 (especially a turbo) you'd notice almost as much difference as with the stock DeLorean and the LS one. I'll agree that these aren't the best car Porsche ever built (they're a sight better than the 928) but this isn't the best example of one.
the written manual in the glove box for these cars has graphs showing the rpm versus speed. these cars are not made for acceleration runs from rest, try accelerating from 60mph(100kmh) they are geared for the autobahn
Alvaro Delgado the community is moderate but parts are expensive (it is a porsche after all). my friend has a martini wrapped 944 and slapped a supercharger in it and it is definitely fun
Yes both these guys not very sharp on 944 cars. Owner doesn't have car sorted out and lets someone drive car who is not a good shifter and clutch releaser! ALWAYS minimize clutch slippage when shifting with proper rev matching and reasonably solid engagement of clutch. If you already know the engine speed drops slower than you expect, wait for proper engagement and DON'T let the clutch make engine drop revs. The clutch will not last long the way he uses it. Don't drive my car like that. Peace.
. I noticed from beginning of video trying to pull out from edge of road and right away that area looked familiar like the area north of Reading, Pa. on US rt 61. That road very busy and please use caution by looking both ways well before entering. I live in Syracuse but grew up in that beautiful area down there.
He's not wrong about any of this information. But these roads and this drive really didn't bring out any of the car. I've autocrossed mine, had it out for a lapping day and toured with a pro44 team on the west coast. We did nationals in Sonoma for the spec944 races. Why would you race these? Because if you have the money to build a Racecar and drive it for a whole season - you can do a 944 right. I wholeheartedly agree though - pretty rotten street car especially if it's been "changed"
The owner describing all the little ins and outs, is describing, almost word for word, exactly the same issues I had with my TT 300zx. Minus the scraping...that shit was terrible. Whyyyyy the not-to-spec wheels? :'( Matter of fact there wasn't a power steering leak on my Z either. Man, that porsche needs some mechanical work.
If you want to try out a proper FR Porsche, find someone who has a 944T/S2 or 968 that is bone-stock and well-kept. These type of Porsches are best in stock form with performance tires.
... I can't stand when people describe a clutch behaviour based on the symptoms of a worn out clutch... heavy and grabs at the top. You may be able to adjust it some are adjustable.
zombieno1 don't base your decision on this 944, it has quite a few issues from what I and others can tell. A stock car that's well maintained would be worlds away from this car.
Vacuum leak, power steering leak, donk wheels. No wonder Mr Regular didn't like the car, he needs to drive a sorted one.
Aston Bonin +1!
Every shift he does is a short shift too.
draggonhedd. because the car is slow and the gears long. i can imagine that being an unsatisfying experience.
Aston Bonin even a sorted one is dog slow and not particularly satisfying to drive.
For some reason, most of the cars he reviews have issues.
I don't think this 944 was a good representation of all 944s. This one seems very broken
I own a 944. Being broken makes it great at representing all 944.
Lol so true. I wouldn't call my 924s reliable.
VolkswagenGamer How many 30+ year old cars on the road dont need maintenance??
This statement I can concur with. 1988 944
Yeah this dude-bro basically ruined his car.
He deserved what he got in the review.
But other 944 enthusiasts and owners didn't!
Do you honestly think that what Mr. Regular says about cars in his reviews is supposed to reflect their owners? You people have an odd habit of bashing on the owners that give Mr. Regular their keys, and by doing so providing Mr. Regular with content, and you with entertainment.

Read the posts in the 1987 Porsche 944s: Regular Car Reviews video.
Levi Betz the stock wheels are 15in. These are somewhere between 18in and 20in, meaning that the gearing is 20%-33% longer. A significant difference
but the tires have a much lower profile than the stock ones, therefore making them pretty similar
Ivan Smrkinić Similar eh? And the fact those tyres are wider by 35+mm doesn't bother you at all?
How can you not like that engine note? It sounds fantastic.
I recently inherited my late father-in-laws 1983 944 5-spd. I had it completely serviced an independent Porsche shop, and my car has NONE of the issues described here. Yeah and vacuum leaks are one of the biggest pains in the asses to diagnose and repair.
Incorrect rims really screw up these old Porsches.
Not to mention the mechanical issues.
Poor example.
why would you gear it up in such a stupid way?

Vacuum leak definitely doesn't help the power any.

A lot of horses have escaped from this barn!
punkbloater clever
Certainly has a nice engine sound!
"it's a very track oriented car" I can ony imagine the look on Mr. Regulars face.
i hope this will get the 944 fans riled up to get Mr R one that actually works
I was gonna say the bigger wheels and the fact that the owner of the car said the engine had a vacuum leak may have affected the performance of the car a bit. Matching sets of 225/50R16 & 245/45R16 for front and rear are getting hard to find for my 928.
Is it a KL equipped car?
whoohaaXL. were you asking me? mine is a 93 mx6 with the DE, auto swapped to manual with an mx3 trans and flywheel. i had a 96 previously.
I own an 88 944S, most of the extra hp above the base model are found above ~4500 rpm, if you stay in the high rpm it’s not too slow
These cars were not particularly fast when new but they weren't bad. They were solid little sports cars with no little quirks that I recall. This comment demonstrates exquisitely how far up there own ass the average Porsche driver is. Even if it's a 4k crags list economy car.
I've seen it mentioned before in comments, but Mr. Regular would really benefit from a track day / HPDE. It would really boost confidence and help cut down on some bad habits (crossing arms while steering, etc). Nobody at Jalopnik can hook him up with a track day? It would even make a good video series.
agreed
by my life, I don't know how he learned that trait of crossing his arms. It just seems so unintuitive. Still love ya Reg.
Joao Simoes There's plenty of reasons. Have a look using your favourite search engine.

ESPECIALLY U MR. REGULARRR
but that means having a healthy sleep schedule.
Kelvin Reyes NOO
GO FUCK YOURSELF
Moist
Kelvin Reyes good thing I work overnights
Kelvin Reyes I wake at 4:30 am for work, don't mind me.
that sound from the door at 0:28...just perfect :D
How about test driving a car that was with a responsible Porsche owner.
love the videos, they are really entertaining to someone who is just entering in to cars. keep it up!
Well, engine has a vacuum leak. Might explain some of the non-committal acceleration. Also scrape, uh...heavy wheels.
The 944 has a hydraulic clutch with an assist spring like the GT86.
That car sounds so amazing honestly
Seriously, this car is not a good example of the N/A series of the 944, my 2.5 944 has a much tighter turn in and does not bog like that, I've power shifted in 2nd and 3rd and gotten wheel spin, that is one sketchy ass 944, sounds good though.
Boy this car is squeaky squeaky on the interior, a very classic feature of Porsche.
What's the exhaust? sounds great
"holds revs"... HEAVY FLYWHEEL, it's called heavy fywheel
the drop in rpms could be indicative of a bad (or no) stepper motor, which keeps the rpms up for between shifts.
Regular -- if you're ever in Austin and want a 944 that isn't a pile a garbage, let me know.
Is this a standard exhaust? All 944's I heard on YT are a bit quiet but this one sounds decent.
2:20
Headlights go up headlights go down
UP DOWN UP DOWN
*giggles*
It's an excellent chassis.
Maurice Searcy. meh, there are better...by far.
"Better by far?" LOL, you've never drove one.
IT IS TOO LATE in the night for this video about Toyota Camry's to be uploaded i thinks.
He hit it on the head about not liking to take off at low rpm, you've gotta use the clutch a little. With stock wheels it definitely doesn't loose that much rpm when shifting.
love that he had his key in his right hand.... then they cut out the part of the video (29 seconds) where he attempts to stick it in the wrong side. lol 😂
944s (and 914s, 924s, 928s and 968s) have the ignition on the right.
Cleans his shoes first. Gentleman.
shit car like that, he should clap his shoes before getting back out
It may have a dual mass flywheel that hold the revs.
Great video, thanks for making it :)
dude needs maintenance on this ride
maintenance before mods people!
Maintenance before REVIEW!
But would the cars really be "regular" if they all spruced them up before each review?
It wouldn't be spruced up. It'd be maintained properly.
Punit M he's brown, do you honestly think he does maintenance on his car?
I have an 89 944 base. I love it for what it is. An icon vintage driving experience. With 50/50 weight distro the handling is great. Disappointed in the review. Typically love your videos.
awww your were on penn st and rt 61. used to live 3 minutes from there and had my biked serivced at the bmw bike dealer there.
The disclaimers before he drove remind me of those commercials for medication on TV.
Fair is fair...the shift light at 4K should be used as the indicator to hit the accelerator, as peak torque is at 4250. You take it to about 5k or a bit more and shift and now you will be just before 4k again in that higher gear and ready for another gears pulling. My 944S is definitely a little quicker than that, not by much, but on a full pull I do 0-60 in about 7 seconds. I need to know his exhaust setup tho, that sounds amazing.
....first few words "the cable isnt tight enough" 944's have a hydraulic clutch system
Magnifique porche 944☺😊😀
I won't comment on whether or not the car was "broken" however, if you put 18 wheels on a Honda Civic its gears are going to get "longer" and there will be a larger RPM gap between shifts. Why wasn't this accounted for? I mean. If you're going to review the car, then take into account the things an owner does to alter the experience. They came with what.. 15's? Holy crap that steering rack looks terrible! Arm over arm just for the twisties?
everyone was busy trying to look like motley crue, they had no time for such bullshit as steering ratio, for god's sake.
zloychechen5150 the light on the keyfob is for bumps of coke in the dark
my car drops rpm really fast too, so between each gear shit i blip the throttle to raise the rpm a bit
This is the type of guy to be on To Catch a Predator lmao.
- Owner - "Its very track oriented, this car."
- Mr Regular - "umhm."
Mr. Regular; Ever thought of making/selling window decals for your channel?
already did
that's ghey. No one would even know wtf rcr is
we would know what it is.
hey, Mr. Regular, I sent you an email about the 2000 Acura TL, I can actually drive out a bit further to meet up if you want to drive it.
it losses 3k RPM between 1st at redline and 2nd !?
Oh jesus, you aren't wrong. At most it should be dropping half that, realistically only 1k at peak ranges.
the written manual in the glove box for these cars has graphs showing the rpm versus speed.
these cars are not made for acceleration runs from rest, try accelerating from 60mph(100kmh)
they are geared for the autobahn
Car seems fun to me. Definitely not as fun as any other Porsche but fun. I wonder if there's a decent aftermarket community though.
Alvaro Delgado the community is moderate but parts are expensive (it is a porsche after all). my friend has a martini wrapped 944 and slapped a supercharger in it and it is definitely fun
I love these cars in black
NEVER 1ST IN A MOVING CAR!
Revs dropping significantly could very well be explained by the vacuum leak.
He's not wrong about any of this information. But these roads and this drive really didn't bring out any of the car.

Poor Kyle. Sounds like he likes his car; I hope he didn't watch your review of it, but I know he will have.
I think the shorter list would have been to ask him what functions properly on the car.
Seems strange the ignition is on the wrong side for most Porshes...
The sound brought me back to the days when i was playing NFS Porsche Unleashed 2000,but the scraping ruined it all
Why would you put bigger wheels on the car?
I wish you can drive a Peugeot 205GTi or 106 Rallye. But they're not on U.S. of A. sadly.
I was driving my old '86 944 a year and a half after my hip broke in 3 places lol.
If you want to try out a proper FR Porsche, find someone who has a 944T/S2 or 968 that is bone-stock and well-kept. These type of Porsches are best in stock form with performance tires.
i didnt know the S had such long gears, my 2.5na 8valve barely reaches 60mph in second
I've always loved this model.... but I don't think I would dare actually buying one
Where did you drive this one?
that Porsche have probably seen better day
What's with the roof?
... I can't stand when people describe a clutch behaviour based on the symptoms of a worn out clutch... heavy and grabs at the top. You may be able to adjust it some are adjustable.
I'm curious about your driving impressions for the 928. How did it behave?
how much do these usually go for nowadays?
Man you weren't kidding about the gearing on the review. I guess the bigger wheels only have made it worse.
when are we gonna get a dodge viper review Mr. R? will Bruce let you take his out? :P

review a 07-11 suzuki sx4!!
As mr. Regular said in his review: got a good 944? Prove it. Tis easy to bitch about an unfair review, not so easy to prove it unfair.
944's don't like vacuum leaks... or giant wheels...
👍👍😎
What a scuffed 944.
I've lost all desire for this car. I would still give a turbo 944 a shot.
zombieno1 don't base your decision on this 944, it has quite a few issues from what I and others can tell. A stock car that's well maintained would be worlds away from this car.
zombieno1 what are you talking about the NA versions are solid this car in particular is a lemon
well someone better give him the keys to a proper 944 soon.
-"Sorry"
-"Its oke"
