That’s actually incredibly admirable. I don’t think a player who speaks a different language should have to learn English, but I think it’s super cool he wanted to do this to better connect with fans.
@@Matt_Fields_29ohtani def speaks English bro there’s tons of vids of him speaking it he just prefers to speak his native language in front of cameras which is understandable
@@Luffygeargiggles his vocab is pretty solid, which is a huge part of learning a language. you're focusing on his grammar and confidence, which is more difficult and comes in the later stages of learning a language.
He did it for himself. I find it admirable that he isn't just growing as a ball player, but also as a human. Playing baseball is hard enough, but to dedicate the time to learn the language shows the drive he has a human to better himself in all ways.
Yes! My grandfather taught himself German when he was deployed and he taught himself English when he came to the States. He’s a big fan and I showed him this interview. He was very impressed and proud.
This gentleman is crazy smart. Obviously not just an athlete but has the brains to boot. This is amazingly impressive. Bout to buy me an Elly jersey as a Buccos fan!
I’m Kenyan and I know exactly how difficult and amazing English is once you can get your point across without having to think it in another language first 😅
I’ve worked with people from all I’ve the world and traveled extensively. Your English is very understandable. Fun watching you play. The most exciting man in Baseball!
My 23 yr old daughter has never lived out of Puerto Rico. She went to Disney World for a week 2 yrs ago and to Atlanta GA to visit family also for a week last yr since she's still going to college and both she and her husband work. Yet, aside from her native spanish she speaks English better than me, speaks Italian and Sign Language. I used to buy educational books in english and spanish since before she started school so it became something natural for her. I also used to buy cartoon movies for her that she could watch either in spanish or english and that helped her too. It’s a matter of wanting to learn and it feels amazing being able to communicate with other ppl in their own language. Elly has become my favorite player to watch. It’s amazing the things he can do as such a young age.
He is such a handsome young man!!! You have to be pretty damn smart to be able to pick English up like that after just immersion. Maybe he's taking private lessons too. I don't know. But boy that's bravery to be able to get up and do that.
His smile is so genuine and real. What a great, humble guy. To those who say people shouldn't have to learn English to play in MLB you most definitely should. I wouldn't go to another country and expect them to learn MY language.
By far my favorite player! I haven't been this excited about the Redlegs in a long time!! This yr didn't work out because of injuries, but next yr it's on!! GO ELLY!! GO REDS!! ⚾
There’s some great guys coming up lately in sports! De La Cruz, Doncic, The joker. Unfortunately the common denominator is they are all from somewhere other than the US
Maybe they are? Most US folks don't go on camera to boast how they're trying to learn more than the 1 language we just barely grasp, lol - especially when most people in other countries know 2-6 languages.
@@notorioustoriis the irony in him calling the other person stupid? That would only be ironic if we’re assuming the replied commenter isn’t multilingual. I think that it’s definitely valid for American Sports players to learn the language. You wouldn’t be able to get a job in Japan if you didn’t speak basic Japanese, nor would you be able to in Germany without knowing some German
Actually I know Barry Larkin has been retired for so long but he, as well as Joey Votto, both learned Spanish so they could communicate with some of their teammates better. Barry is also an ambassador for the Reds in the Dominican because of his ability to communicate with their baseball players.
He is my favorite baseball player
