Great video! I’ve served in the Navy for 24 years now and the best lesson you’ll learn is formulating your own leadership style. Pro: You’ll interact with all walks of life in the Navy and learn a lot from them. VA Home loans, free college, support services of all types not just for you, also family. Con: Personal space is very limited, especially on a ship no matter the size. Announcements, Bells, Pipping, Talking, Aircraft taking off/landing, your sleep time is definitely another Sailors work time. All of these examples are my interactions, they are probably different from person to person.🤷🏽♂️ Stay blessed!

Great video! I definitely experienced the hair thing in boot camp I felt like most of the Petty Officers and chiefs would say that all the people of color needed to fix our hair when our hair was already fixed and then grab someone not of color as an example of what our hair “should” look like when every ethnicity has a different hair texture.. anyways that kind of stuff is found at any job so it’s just one of those things you have to charge it the streets... congrats on 2 years in though!
Hey young man. You're starting to get the hang of enlisted life. I keep the hardheadedness and emotions out of your military job and you'll be a Master Chief one day. I did twenty-three honorable years and retired as a Chief. You present yourself well, you are articulate and smart enough to make notes for the video. Job well done. Don't take orders personally and keep those young man emotions in check. Proud to say you and I are/we're in the same US Navy! God bless you and your loved ones son. You're never alone. Keith
Excellent video, Alark. I completely understand where you come from with the cons, such as leadership. I have seen good and bad leadership in the Navy and I try to take what I learned from good leaders and give them the kind of leadership I would like to work for. Unfortunately there are leaders who don't care about anyone but themselves out there, but I hope the poor leaders don't ever form your opinion on the entire Navy. Anyway, whether you stay in or get out, enjoy your time and don't ever let the cons of the Military get you down. At the end of the day, the Military life is only temporary. We were all civilians before and we will all be civilians again. Just go out there and do your job to the best of your ability and acquire some skills and take those with you whenever you decide to leave the service.
My favorite part of this was the soup analogy... Best of luck in your career. Stay positive and offer your leadership solutions to the problems you encounter everyday. As a division officer I valued my junior enlisted's feedback! Be the one that your chain of command never has to worry about. Once they give you something they know it's done without having to follow up on it.
People with too much time on their hands get in trouble easily so all that pointless work is to keep you busy. It also makes the time go by faster. There is nothing worse than spending your day doing nothing. The major pro you left out is your access to learning. Studying for the next higher rank and learning a useful skill like computer science, electronics, electrical or mechanics all for free. These are high paying jobs in civilian life. The other is security. You really have to try hard to get stabbed, shot or become a crime victim. In many U.S. cities this is a constant threat. I think the younger you are the harder it is to live the military life. You'll find that as you mature partying and risky behavior becomes much less appealing. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and may God bless you and everyone you love.
i spent 4 years in the Army & i laughed so hard BUT also understood what you meant when you said “you’re eating w/ a spoon” & then someone w/ higher rank comes over and says “use this fork” & then someone’s says “nah use this knife” & your like BUT i have a spoon 😩😭😂😂😂 .

As another Navy dude living in Japan, I second this video. You don't have to be 100% Hooyah Navy but you should fulfill the promises of your contract. That's the best way to keep those post-navy opportunities open. I'm getting out in a few months and I strongly recommend sticking it out and finishing strong so that when you want a government (better) job paying way more, you will have the option. Otherwise, enjoy the place you're at, but don't let that cause a bad mark on your record that is irreversible.
Originally I wanted to become an engineer, until I started to watch some UA-camrs that are in the marine/navy. Seeing this video inspired me more to become a marine officer. I’m only 14 and still have a long wait to go, but I want to achieve like you.

It all depends on the leadership. At sea, long days strung all together for weeks at a time. In port, I always rewarded my guys with plenty of time off when we're not at sea. Some leadership feels it's more important to always work hard so that the division can earn points for their leaders.

Some of your cons are situational. I tell my division to get the job done and do it safely.... like the spoon and fork thing, if I see a Sailor doing something wrong I'll show them why is wrong, like if it's unsafe or can cause damage. Keep up the good work, you're the future

As a woman , How was your experience in the army ? I am 19 years old and currently going to a trade school , but my instructors are not so helpful. I want to go away from the valley and try new things . What can you advise me .

The spoon and fork thing killed me 😂😂😂 I’m going into the military but I’m undecided
Spoon and fork reference spot on, Marine veteran 11yrs, and yeah Your going to do those years when you sign that contract. USMC (You Signed the Motherfucking Contract)
If you’re “laid back and lazy” and you like that about yourself I am being recommended to the Air Force a lot but I’m more interested in something else
Air Force is easiest, navy gives you the most travel, marines are the most hard core and the army... is the army.
@@sophiahercules2054 what about the army?
Jammie Hawkins fuck that contract if they say do some I don’t want to do I’m not doing that shit I can get fired find a new job that simple

Hey did u join
Thanks for your service man. I noticed you talked about the GI bill. My father was in the military and he never used his GI bill so he passed it on to me. I plan on going into the navy as well myself.
I joined the navy and backed out because they were trying to give me an apprentice type job. Now im with the USAF doing what i love. Best decision i ever made. Guys make sure you do an immense amount of research on the branches.
What are some things to research? I think the basics are what each does, but what are the deeper questions?
What type of job were they trying to give you? (Anything specific?)
My son just join the Navy and I shared your video with him. I think that you are passionate and transparent about your job in the Navy I am a disabled Army Vet. Keep up the good work and you will make your dream come true.

I am definitely considering it. Thanks!!

It all depends on the leadership. At sea, long days strung all together for weeks at a time. In port, I always rewarded my guys with plenty of time off when we're not at sea. Some leadership feels it's more important to always work hard so that the division can earn points for their leaders.

However just remember you are the government’s property you will go where they need you. My time in the Navy was great however i have been in a combat zone with the Marine Corps. (Location classified). Horrific unforeseen events did occur. I will never forget.

I ship out to Great Lakes this Monday (6/10). Also from the Baltimore area (surrounding suburbs). Love your videos, Shim. If all goes well & I make it through basic, I intend to put up Navy related content as well. It's been very helpful for me during all the preparatory months, finding channels like yours & getting a little insight into the processes & lifestyle.

Man Ive been in the Navy for 12 years and idk why but I appreciate this video alot.
Some of your cons are situational. I tell my division to get the job done and do it safely.... like the spoon and fork thing, if I see a Sailor doing something wrong I'll show them why is wrong, like if it's unsafe or can cause damage.
Keep up the good work, you're the future
Keep going man, you've got a good head on your shoulders. I would of never gotten out of active duty if I could go back and do it again. Make sure you are 100% sure you're ready to get out before you make that final decision. Once again keep going man.
