2 things: Firstly, I think it's amazing how many books you read about the african/african american/caribbean experience. As a caribbean woman myself, I feel that black stories are (not always but mostly) read by the black population, but it's really refreshing and inspiring to know that people from different ethnicities support the work as well! Secondly, you are so right about keeping your childhood books. I'm in my mid-twenties now, and I've been an avid reader my whole life. A lot of my childhood/teenage books were kept at my mom's house once I moved out, and she's given a lot of them away to other children as well, as I never thought that I would read them a second time. After watching this video I texted my mom immediately to save the books she had left of my old collection so that I could pass them down to my future children! Thank you for the inspiration, Jess!
Sanovia M Hiii, I’m an english lit major from Germany and I actually have so many courses on literature from africa / the carribean and african americans :)
its a bit weird tho that as a white woman, a wealthy white woman, who doesn't do much in terms of actual activism in helping these communities etc seems to heavily rely on these stories of diaspora and generational trauma, for example, in her studies. it's just very White and uncomfortable
enodia williams I get where you’re coming from, but would it be better for white people to pretend those difficulties people of colour and people in poorer parts of the world deal with don’t exist? I doubt it. Plus, learning about it is the first step. And if the only thing that brings about is more respect and empathy for those less privileged, that’s better than nothing.
Marie Kondo's philosophy is really just if it doesn't bring you joy then you're doing yourself a disservice by cluttering your life with that "stuff". She's not telling people to go throw out ALL of their books- or even half of their books. She is speaking to those who hold onto "stuff" because of some indescribable obligation, because they haven't bothered to go through things in decades, because they just simply don't want to get rid of things. Your books bring you joy- ALL of them. And seeing all of your books in a collection like that, in a pretty damn neat and organized display- makes you proud and brings joy too. I really don't think Marie would argue with that :)
she actually doesn't say that about people who just "simply don't want to get rid of things"... the opposite really. its not about decluttering its about organising and bettering your relationship with the material things around you.
easy: the time you spend on your phone/computer is the time she uses for reading. it's not that hard once you see how much you spend on things like social media and once you learn how to properly manage your time. (this is coming from someone who read 108 books in 2018)
I’ve just read his dark materials for the first time (I’m 20)!! I’m really happy I waited so long to read it, simply because I read it right after I finished a pretty hardcore course on Milton and i was so happy to find all the themes and theories from Paradise Lost appear in Pullman’s books! I really geeked out over it, especially since I wrote my final essay on Milton’s metaphysics and Dust is basically Pullman expanding on just that! It was really amazing to read these children’s books and find such complex and literary references in them that I was able to recognize and think on!!!
Absolutely lovely bookshelf! Now I'm extremely curious to learn more about your reading habits. I have so so so many books that I've collected that I have yet to read and I tend to start many books at once, which leads me to become a tad overwhelmed. I'd love to know if you have read only one book at a time or several, when and where you read, et cetera.
I love to read but unfortunately I have depression and one of my symptoms when it gets really bad is I stop wanting to read. I’ve been in a really bad slump for months now but this video has really inspired me to pick up the books that I neglected last year. All your book videos inspire me, the way you talk about books you clearly love them, and your book shelf has a really warm and cosy vibe. Thanks for this video :)
Alice E you should try audiobooks! I also suffer from depression and find reading falls to the side but audiobooks have helped me a lot with getting back into reading. Check out the app Libby. It syncs with your library card and you can check out ebooks and audiobooks.
I absolutely loved your blog post on "doing more things I love". The writing was incredibly clever and eloquent. I also just found it super helpful and inspiring in terms of trying to actively set aside time in your day/week to do the things that bring you joy. Please continue writing your more personal blog posts (including the beautiful book reviews and shelf tours posts). I'm looking forward to reading more of your work!
Won't let me post on your blog but just read your Doing more things you love article and THANK YOU for this opinion piece!I think this is your niche. Writing more about ideas, society, millenial culture, 'girls' esque. Combining fashion, beauty, self expression with more substantial writing to feed the brain. I think recently a lot of criticism on your youtube has been coming from an inability 'to connect' with you; content just being outfits, hauls, items, purchases, lifestyles and narration of activity without the person's thoughts and life behind it. I'm sure you then struggle though with keeping your private life private but wanting to create genuine personal content. I think that would be a good medium! Talk about ideas, the world, the graduate's existential crisis, how you find london, personal expression, creativity, culture you enjoy in london and take people along with it, experiential stuff. You'll feel more inspired and your audience will feel more connected? :)
This is the best surprise, Jessie! I totally agree with you, I think that the way we organize our books is a reflection of who we are, of our journey and of what we love about reading; that's why I really enjoy getting to know how other people organize their bookshelves: it's often very different from what I personally do and I love that! This tour really shows your love for reading and it was very interesting to getting to know your "life as a reader". I saw that we share some of our "childhood/teenage" favorites, such as "His Dark Materials" (I was obsessed with that trilogy and I think that it shaped me a lot), Jostein Gaarder's "Sophie' world" and Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights". As for your to be read shelves, I think you would really enjoy Farenheit 451 - I could totally be wrong about that as well, because taste in reading is subjective, but it's a quite straightforward yet very powerful dystopian classic. The writing is very simple but this makes the message even more poignant. P.S. Just wanted to say that I think your blogpost on "Doing more things I love" was brilliant, as someone else pointed out in the comments :)
I honestly can't wait for the day you start moving your books into your new house and -hopefully- film the process, because I'm so interested in seeing the other books that were tucked far back as well as seeing the way you're planning to display them! So impressed with your book collection x
i often wonder why i never hear anyone talk about philipp pullmann's other books ? like, the sally lockhart mysteries are my childhood favorites and no one seems to have loved it ... its so weird to me, these are fantastic !
Since you have so many books to read, I’d love to see a video on your 5 star predictions! And then a wrap up of them once you’ve read them to compare your expectations of them to your actual thoughts. Love the bookish content Jess!
I just loved this too much. I probably have around the same amount of books that you do, but mine are all separated around the house, which is unfortunate. I'm looking for my place and it's mandatory to have space for shelves. Loved to see your library, thank you so much for that
Can you recommend some classic books for beginners? Ie things everyone must read in their life?? Ive never really got in to reading but its my new years resolution and ive bought a kindle. Currently reading a girl on the train and i like it xx
Please read Zadie Smith: On Beauty first - not read section - she used EM Forster’s Howard’s End as a template. So cleverly done as Zadie’s masterpiece is set amidst America’s Ivy League colleges. It’s a tribute and a riff. Think breathless canter through American academic contemporary life. African American themes ... lots of the unexpected. I’m writing this and wanting to re read it as I do so. Love to know what you think!
I really enjoyed this video - thank you for sharing your collection with us, Jess! I wish I had kept more of my childhood books now as I agree with you that they do hold extremely special memories. xx
Love love LOVE this video! I've fawned over your shelves for years ahaha. I've just started reading the His Dark Materials series and loved the first one! Can't wait to read the rest.
This was super interesting to watch! I'm very envious of your bookshelf - a bookshelf like yours is definitely the thing I look forward to the most about having my own place one day :) Looking forward to seeing more of these videos!
random comment of the day: makes sense to have books that you might grab now on the lower shelves, but when you keep them around for your family, maybe consider repositioning the ones directed to younger audiences to lower shelves, so that your children can reach them
Unless there are a lot of quotes I like or it made me feel or think a certain way or idk, there's simply something about the book, I don't keep the books I don't like. I do keep however, all my childhood books; in case I someday have children, it would be amazing to pass them on to them and share with them books that I loved and influenced me as a kid.
May you do a review of your African American literature course and non course books? I am trying to read more of that genre and add to my collection. Also, I have seen Bastard out of Carolina movie but been wanting to read the book, may you give review or your thoughts on that? 🤗🤗🤗
Loved this! I've noticed you have not many books of murakami which is my favorite author! If you are in the mood to try it "Norwegian wood", "Kafka on the shore", "killing commendatore" and "blind willow, sleeping woman" are some of my faves from him! I would love to hear your opinion on those.
Book collection is just so impressive! Can you perhaps do a video on where to find a good read? I know you can probably go by the genre you like but is there a website, or do you just go by best sellers? 😊
The only books I ever get rid of at the ones I have had in my shelves for ever and never picked up and am 100% certain I won't do so in the future either. Books I hated I can't part with, I'm a passionate ranter and somehow I just want to be able to pull them out and show receipts of their awfulness. A Secret Life Of Bees and Heroes Of The Frontier yes I'm looking at you...
Loved it! :D Random question but, how much time do you try to spend reading every day? I used to read around 1 book a week, but find it so much harder these days. I don't think I could possibly get through 3! x
This is incredible!! Also a random question but Jess what are your thoughts on kindle unlimited when you’re using your kindle. Do u use it or do you just buy the books you want to read? Anyone help with thoughts and opinions please because I’m unsure
I found that kindle unlimited only had quite low rated books that aren't in demand. Like new releases or books by well known authors weren't part of it.
Yeah, I have found that! Even the books that look quite good you can buy for 99p or 1.99 max. I brought 3 months of it for £1.99 to do the Harry Potter books but I think after that I will cancel it! Thank you for your help 😊
Just curious how often you have to cut your hair. I recently cut my hair to a bob and have had to get a haircut every 3-4 weeks because it’s growing so fast 😰
Hey Jess - really a nice video! I am in need of your help. I need to find a good read for my boyfriend in the fantasy genre. I remember that you recommended one at some point and i feel like i wrote i down but now i just can't find it. The thing is, i am from Denmark and most bookstores and publishers does not find it worth their while to translate that kind of genre or at least keep the english version in store. Therefore i my self is not that familiar with the genre. Sadly enough i am actually studying literature myself, but that is very much mostly the more classic ones, so my knowledge in this area is simply not great. Do you have a good suggestion? He is not the biggest of readers but do love the fantasy/fantastic genre. Best wishes Sidsel (sorry for the gramma and the length ;) )
Best video ever!...but my wish list is now getting out of hand. Could you please do a video or blog post about the notes you write about books you read? I read a lot but have never made notes. It's something I really want to get into but because I didn't study English Lit I don't know where to start.
Jess please do a video on your reading habits!!
2 things:

Sanovia M Hiii, I’m an english lit major from Germany and I actually have so many courses on literature from africa / the carribean and african americans :)
@@josepha133 This is so cool!! I hope you've enjoyed what you read so far :)
Sanovia M I did! My favourites were under the udala trees (an african lgbt coming-of-age novel) and americanah. But please give me more recs! Haha 🤗

How on earth do you read so fast? Three books a week, that’s insane! It takes me three weeks to read one book

i think it helps that she has a flexible schedule/works for herself

agreed on the shelf tour of your most influential books, looking forward to it!

I totally agree, I loved that blogpost as well!

This is the best surprise, Jessie!

I loved hearing your reasons for keeping your books, how you shelve books via emotion etc and this tour was just wonderful
Since you have so many books to read, I’d love to see a video on your 5 star predictions! And then a wrap up of them once you’ve read them to compare your expectations of them to your actual thoughts. Love the bookish content Jess!

Your shelves are gorgeous.. they make such a statement and is such a great focal point in your room!

How do you find books to read?
I see Middlesex on a TBR shelf! you should definitely read that soon- it's one of the most unique and riveting books I've ever read
My fav video thus far Jess! Please do a blog review on your “favourites” shelf
you organize your books like I organize my playlists, I find this really funny. A lot of memories behind those collections. Love from France !
Can you recommend some classic books for beginners? Ie things everyone must read in their life?? Ive never really got in to reading but its my new years resolution and ive bought a kindle. Currently reading a girl on the train and i like it xx

Loved this!! Yeah you should definitely write a blog post on your favs shelf soon❤️

Please tell me you buy from independent book stores! We need to support them! This video is incredible and your love for books is so impressive.
This is such nice content to watch. How do you keep such a quick pace with finishing books? Are you just constantly reading?
Liked the video and it hasn’t even started I’m sooo excited!
Book collection is just so impressive! Can you perhaps do a video on where to find a good read? I know you can probably go by the genre you like but is there a website, or do you just go by best sellers? 😊
This video feels like the sensation you get when sitting in front of a whispering fire

HOW do you get to reading 3 books a week???? TEACH ME!
Loved it! :D
Random question but, how much time do you try to spend reading every day? I used to read around 1 book a week, but find it so much harder these days. I don't think I could possibly get through 3! x
Yesss thank you Jess! ❤️from Belgium
OMG this made my day!
Loved it! 😍😍
I love getting notifications ❤️ another awesome video

I really like her bookshelves. Is that weird?
Do you collect travel books too Jess?
Hey Jess - really a nice video!
I am in need of your help. I need to find a good read for my boyfriend in the fantasy genre. I remember that you recommended one at some point and i feel like i wrote i down but now i just can't find it. The thing is, i am from Denmark and most bookstores and publishers does not find it worth their while to translate that kind of genre or at least keep the english version in store. Therefore i my self is not that familiar with the genre. Best wishes Sidsel (sorry for the gramma and the length ;) )
This video is a gem !!
I LOVED this video, I'm also on a book buying ban at the moment because of my 'to read' shelf!
p.s what is your good reads account handle? x
I don't mind a video of you showing 800 books one by one.
This is so exciting!!! Love it :)
Omg she's done it
Loved this!!!!!! Thank you xxxx
Oehh this is what i want haha great inspo :)
I loooooove your book videos! I literally have a "sunbeamsjess" shelf on Goodreads where I shelve all your recommendations 😂

Aha the only books I could see that I've read are the Harry Potter series 😂
Have you read any Brazilian literature?
Why do you buy books that you’ve already read on your kindle? Seems like a waste of money/space
100%
It’s for collecting
And future house?
House tour
Best video ever!...but my wish list is now getting out of hand.
Could you please do a video or blog post about the notes you write about books you read? I read a lot but have never made notes. It's something I really want to get into but because I didn't study English Lit I don't know where to start.
Are you fussy about which edition you buy?...and whether it's paperback or hardback?
Where are your bookshelves from?
