I've been subscribed for years now and I always find your content soothing, inspiring, and intellectually stimulating. I especially love this format as it feels very podcast-y. You should consider having your own podcast, I would love to listen to that! 💛
(P.S. I'm Italian. You nailed the pronunciation of "Risorgimento"! You should definitely read "Difficult Loves" by Calvino, it's a short story collection.)

Your book videos are so good and i always look upto ur reviews and recommendations. 💕

I love that you read some Italian literature! The Leopard is one of those staples that even if you haven't read you know about and Italo Calvino is one of the best Italian writers of the XX century, I hope you manage to read more of his works, they are usually not very long but so interesting and beautifully written! 💕

Blade Runner is actually based off Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Phillip K Dick - and after having a google, Neuromancer won the Phillip K Dick award! It's a great book though, I highly recommend.

    Hi Jess!
I'm so happy you decided to read "Le città invisibili" Calvino, that's definitely one of my favorite books of him who's one of my favorite writer ever. Calvino is one of the most read author in university and high school in Italy since he has a very peculiar style and he touches a wide range of topics, I think you'll really like also "Six Memos for the Next Millennium" and " The Path to the Nest of Spiders".
It made me smile when i realized that the book you talked about next was "Il Gattopardo" which has been translated with "Leopard" 'cause actually the right translation should have been "The Ocelot", wonder why the translator decided for "leopard" instead.
Can wait to join the book club, I was searching for books who describe India and its history since just yesterday I booked a travel for the next year in Rajasthan!!

absolutely adore your book videos! A little input on the Neuromancer; the Matrix was kind of inspired by the ideas of it, Blade Runner was largely inspired by P.K. Dick's novel "Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep" - that came out much before Gibson's work :)

  • @ArianaArcana
    @ArianaArcana 5 років тому +2

Blade runner was based off of "do androids dream of electric sheep" and blade runner 2049 is loosely based off of The Pale Fire poem (as pieces of the poem are a part of K's conditioning.
    Neuromancer inspired The Matrix series.

Thanks for another great set of reviews, lots of new reads to explore. Not a criticism/correction, but noting the Blade Runner films are based on ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ By Philip K. Dick. Though of course they are very cyberpunk! But quite different themes and tone, interesting to contrast in any case :)

What an interesting group of books!
I've only seen the film of The Leopard and found it so dull. It's such a tricky thing when finding sexism in classic books because (like you say) we do expect it but it still takes me aback when I come across it.
I'm glad you enjoyed Fingersmith so much.
I've loved the two Marlon James novels I read so I'm eager to read John Crow’s Devil too and grateful to get your thoughts about it.
The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is good but it's sprawling and goes in so many directions! Hope you enjoy!

Loved the vid! Was wondering when and where you tend to read as a busy person? Especially seen as you read several books every month! I absolutely love reading but I just can’t find much time to really sit down and read a book without being interrupted by the thought that I’ve got something more important to do.
Would love more book videos in the future xx

    • @backtothebooks9201

Not Jess, but if you're struggling for time I would definitely look at where you sink your attention into things like social media, UA-cam, TV, and specifically choose to read sometimes instead. I swapped social media for reading on my commute and it made the start of my day SO much better - I don't watch people screeching at each other on twitter, and I get about 90 minutes reading in a day just doing that!
Also you can have the thought "you've got something more important to do" and kind of sit with the feelings that creates - urgency and maybe even guilt - and just keep reading because it's not your life's mission to be as efficient and productive as possible, you are allowed to waste time doing things that make you happy including reading :)
