Well actually there are many languages in the Philippines. "Filipino" is widely known to be Tagalog, but there are also languages such as Bisaya, Ilonggo, Waray... I could go on and on. I just wanted to share with you this raw video from Santa Cruz Island in Zamboanga Peninsula. One thing I love about the Philippines is just how excited and interactive people seem to get here when you want to learn!
Here you will see me trying to learn some Tausug from locals.
I hope the raw happiness inspires you to want to connect to learning some language if you come to this beautiful country :)

Bro this vid really put a smile on my face. I am Tausug myself and for our language, food and culture to be exposed like this to the interweb brings me so much pride.
By the way, "malasig" means healthy or fit or strong. And happy is "makuyag". So if you're not sick anymore, you will be "malasig". Or if someone is 70 and still strong, that someone is "malasig pa". Anyway, thank your making me makuyag with your videos!

Mindanao is a beautiful region as you well know... But during that time I forgot that I was there then not as a tourist but as a fighting man. The contrast between beauty and chaos became an integral part of my life then. When you made that vlog on turtle island it brought back memories of just lazing off in a hammock at our outpost while gazing at the stars just contemplating about life... and all this while i had an automatic rifle cradled in my arms. Such contradiction right? But that is life Mindanao... or life in general if you think about it. 😊
Taud ba ang lengguahe ngadto Mindanao. Ang iban kanila, magkadaig da ngadto grammar nila.Kun makakat-on kaw hong usa, mas sayon makalitok hong iban.Example: Tausug sounds like and is mutually intelligible to a large degree with Butuanon. They were the same language during pre-Spanish times, and have just branched apart in the last few hundred years. The Butuanon syllabus/ grammar book we made should also be applicable to a large degree to Tausug, for people that want to learn it.
Just hope one day for you to be the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines....You deserve it

I feel so proud of Filipino Muslims with very special mention to Muslim women. They are no different from the rest of the Filipinos. They are as friendly, as hospitable, as caring and as willing to share happiness. For them to be influenced by Muslim radicals from outside is my worst nightmare. It's my dream that the rest of the Filipinos will stand with them as equals and proud and strong. My heartfelt thanks to you Kyle for this video showcasing how wonderful Filipino Muslims are.

Right on Kyle.... Your Tagalog is GREAT. Mine sucks so I'm going to try your technique. I was going for one new word a day, but I can still barely tie a sentence together. Picking up another language is definitely a sign of intelligence so I think mine might be lower than I thought it was ;-)
I think it's not only important and respectful to learn the local language wherever you are, but it's invaluable in the long run in so many ways most importantly for your own safety, and for your own monetary awareness/benefit.

chavacano, bisaya, tausog our native tongue is dialect... actually we dont call it language but instead its dialect... each tribes in philippines have different dialects...

As a native english speaker, I was able to become pretty fluent in Tagalog just by living with someone who only knew tagalog. It took me about 3/4ths of a year but now i can call myself bilingual :D
