  • Don't have a Ledger Nano yet and want to help me out in the process:
    Ledger Nano S: bit.ly/2EWIw2q
    Ledger Nano X: bit.ly/355lOQl
    Looking to store your seed on something more robust than paper?
    Crypto Steel Capsule bit.ly/3azJZKB (Use code: Crypto_Guide_cryptosteel10 for 10% off)
    Crypto Key Stack bit.ly/37kG1oj
    Cobo Tablet Punch bit.ly/2JqQgPJ
    Metal seed storage comparisons: cryptoguide.tips/seed-storage...
    A video that runs through the process for setting up a Ledger Nano X or Ledger Nano S. Runs through installing all the software, includes some important security and safety tips, updating firmware and also demonstrates sending and receiving your first transactions.
    Contents:
    00:00 Intro
    00:40 Unboxing
    02:15 Installing Ledger Live
    02:45 Setting a device PIN
    03:55 Generating, storing & verifying your recovery phrase
    07:10 Final security checks
    08:00 Setting up Ledger Live
    09:20 Updating firmware and installing apps for each crypto
    11:30 Adding accounts in Ledger Live (Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum)
    13:30 Securely Receiving funds (from an exchange or other wallet)
    15:15 Securely Sending funds (To an exchange or other wallet)
    --------------------
    If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.
    For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: www.coinbase.com/join/5691c9d...
    For Trading, just start with Binance: www.binance.com/?ref=18111926
    By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
    Don't have a hardware wallet?
    Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)
    Get a Ledger: shop.ledger.com/?r=5243ecbb84...
    (If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S)

    What's your opinion of Ledger Recover? And what would be an alternative to Ledger in terms of altcoin support? Keystone looks impressive.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Рік тому +1

      Overall I can understand what they are doing, but baking it into the firmware for everyone isn't good at all. That said, the actual detail of what they are doing is still pretty sparse, I'm curious to see what they will be sharing at their announcement thisarv.
      Overall there is no reason to panic and rush to change things in a hurry, especially if you haven't installed the latest Nano X firmware with this feature. Rush and panic is where people often make mistakes, lose funds, etc. If you decide to switch vendors, that is fine, but take the time to understand the device you are moving to, how to set it up, wipe, reset, etc. If Keystone covers the alts you want them that's a good option too :)

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      Depends which cryptos you are holding (And whether a Trezor even supports it) and how you plan to access it (phone be PC) I have feature breakdowns of them here cryptoguide.tips/hardware-wallet-comparisons/
      That said, the Ledger devices tend to be better for newbies. They have a more robust onboarding process, better documentation and software and work far better with mobile.

    Is the Ledger back up pack worth it? It has the nano s and x. I'm also unsure if I should get the ledger nano x or trezor model t.
    Thanks!

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      The backup pack is not required, but helpful in a few ways. Firstly, if you use the same seed on both, it forces you to fully test your seed backup and become familiar with the legitimate seed recovery process. Having a second device also takes the stress out of things like firmware updates, etc.
      On the other hand, if you run two different seeds then you need to be really careful that you don't get your accounts or seed backups mixed up.
      In terms of Nano X vs Trezor T, I really think the X is a better value proposition. The Trezor T is really expensive and not meaningfully better than a Nano S...

    Hi, Thank you for the video! So, if i understand, By receiving bitcoin via ledger live to the ledger X it is stored on the external device? Why can't i find the amount of bitcoins within that device? do i need to wait until it is approved?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +1

      The Ledger itself has no knowledge of the blockchain and isn't a storage device in the sense that the bitcoin don't live in/on it, but are stored on the blockchain and are associated with the private keys on the Ledger. (I explain this more in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/X3_t6wO2f5M/v-deo.html)

  • @jpp59
    @jpp59 3 роки тому

    Great setup video. I think your reference to passphrase is too short. A bip39 passphrase (with a secondary pin) avoid 2 security issues:
    - paper seed backup can be stored several place without the risk to be compromised (as long you do not write down the passphrase)
    - under duress, you can give the pin number linked to the seed without the passphrase of your nano (aka 5usd wrench attack)

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      Yea I was backward and forward at whether to mention that as part of the video in terms of securing backups. The biggest challenge with Ledger is that their implementation does plausibility deniability so well that users can forget they have a passphrase assigned to their primary pin. (And you can't detect it other than through running recovery check)

    • @CryptoGuide

      Your device will come uninitialized when you first get it, and generate a new seed as I demo in this video. There is no need to wipe it a second time, but there is also no harm in doing so.

      All the address your wallet produces can be public, there is no security risk there. (Beyond privacy) Someone would need the private keys to be able to take any funds. (So either individual private keys for a given address or the seed phrase for the wallet)

    Thank you for this great video! I really think Ledger had an amazing deal for Black Friday. I would like to know your thoughts about storing crypto for 20-30 years. As we know, computer processing power is getting faster and faster. If I plan to keep my seed phase for decades, do you think I have the risk of someone guessing my seed phase in 10-15 years when computers are able to process and search across different private keys/seed phases at lighting speeds?
    The last thing I would want is for someone to have a super computer running 24/7 and one day "guessing" my seed and therefore stealing all my funds. While I'm on this topic, do you think that adding a BIP39 passphrase will add an extra layer of protection, so that if someone did ever have a computer powerful enough to "guess" my seed, they would still not be able to access my funds as they would not have my passphrase?
    I would love to hear your thoughts on this :D

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      Firstly, adding a BIP39 passphrase to your seed doesn't really increase the strength of the seed in purely cryptographic terms compared to an equivalent 24 word seed that is stored securely, so the math doesn't change. (Passphrase mostly protects your seed in the event that someone finds it)
      If you have a 24 word seed, there are about 2.9642775e+79 possible combinations of words. As it currently stands, you could use something like BTCRecover to test about 12 billion seeds per day, so you would need 2.4702312e+69 days to brute-force a 24 word seed. Let's just assume that computers become 100 billion times faster it would still take 2.4702312e+58 days... The sun is 1.679e+12 days old... 12 word seeds are an insane level of security and 24 word seeds take it to a whole new level of craziness. (As long as you don't end up giving it away through a phishing scam)
      Even with the most optimistic projections around what quantum computing would achieve, it seems unlikely that the cryptography for BIP39 seeds would be at risk within the next few decades. (And if that were to occur then all other cryptography, including that of Bitcoin itself would also be at risk)

    • @williamshennie9
      @williamshennie9 3 роки тому

      @@CryptoGuide That makes a lot of sense. I guess I never really knew how truly large the numbers are (even though I read about it all the time). Thank you for that, it definitely puts me more at ease :)

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +2

      Yea it's a great question. The biggest challenge is really that the human brain is simply incapable of conceiving of numbers and probabilities on the scales that are common in cryptography. The only thing that even comes close is comparing to cosmic scales of distance and time.

    • @CryptoGuide

      Ledger Live doesn't save anything to your Ledger Nano... But the private keys on your Nano allow you to pair it with any installation of Ledger Live and it will sync all of your accounts, transactions, etc.. (So this also answers your second question, the 24 word seed is only for reinitializing the physical ledger Nano device, not Ledger Live) If your physical Ledger fails, you can just by another one and restore your 24 word seed on to the new Nano, Ledger Live won't even know the difference and will "just work" with the new device.
      I talk about this more in my video on choosing a wallet. (A longer video but will help you understand what is going on behind the scenes)

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      You can't check if it is genuine before setting it up and generating a seed, but you are forced to do a genuine check before it will let you install any apps on it or add any accounts. (So before you can store any crypto on it) A legit install of Ledger Live will simply not work with a non-genuine device.

      Basically all of these dodgy apps will try and trick you in to giving out your seed phrase. It depends on which crypto apps you are trying to install, with some being larger than others. (Litecoin or Eth clones tend to be very small as they rely on the main Bitcoin or Eth app) If you aren't actively trading them all, you can add the accounts to Ledger Live, swap the apps on the Ledger Nano and then add the accounts for all of your cryptos like that.
