I WENT SHOPPING FOR PLUS SIZE CLOTHES IN SPAIN... AND IT WAS EMOTIONAL.

- Today I take you along to come shop with me for plus size clothing in-store in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain. In this plus size fashion vlog, I visit several stores in Barcelona before giving up and trying again Madrid. It takes a lot of body positivity to keep going when the shopping is this rough, trust me I needed a little self care to boost my self love after this adventure. In the end I talk about the challenges of shopping in-store in a foreign country. Overall shopping in Spain wasn't great, but I did my best to find the silver lining. #shopwithme #plussize #spain
I usually really like your videos, but in this one I didn't appreciate how you made fun of things. In general the tone of this video rubbed me the wrong way, talking about 'shady' elevators and 'perfect place to get mugged'. It didn't sound as making the best out of a shitty situation, it kind of sounded like mocking a culture.
Don’t think we’re addressing the problem here….
Well… years ago visiting Serbia, my luggage was lost and I couldn’t find a damned thing, and I was a size 16! Granted, I also felt like the fattest woman there. They may not have as many plus sized women to support carrying plus sized inventory.
*Went shopping yesterday...the clerk looked at me like I had 10 heads and gave*
*me MUMUs and Kafkans to try on...Didn't have a clue. Had to try my hardest*
*not to cry. They don't have a clue as to what we have to go through. Thank God*
*we have Anna to inspire us!*
This! That’s like going to a country where the average height is 5 feet and the tallest person is 5’5 and then a 6 footer is upset they don’t have tall clothes. There’s no reason for them to have tall clothes. It would make zero business sense since no one is tall.
Anna, I feel for you. When I first came to Greece, I was also frustrated. After living here for a while I of course discovered that there are tons of plus size boutiques here. It's not as bad as you think, it's just foriegner blindness, since u don't really know where to shop. Generally speaking plus size shopping here in Europe is Ulla Pupkin, Gerry Weber, M&S, C&A and generally German or British brands, in addition to some local companies that only offer plus size, regular stores are not directed towards plus size people even if they say so.
People around the world just don't eat like us americans.
Some of us who are not plus size have the same experience shopping in Paris !
I lived with n Madrid in 1999 I was a size 12 and I flew back to the US to buy clothing because I was too big back then…
I visited Spain in 1997. It was also hard to find size 11 shoes.
This totally reminds me of the empty suitcase show. Kristin from Ladylike at BuzzFeed, now from the kitchen and Jorn show, used to travel to different cities and she would take almost no clothing and her goal for the trip would be to go out and shop local plus size retailers and put an outfit together for whatever they were doing in that city. It was both depressing and eye-opening. The good part was at least they highlighted a couple of good local plus size boutiques but the reality is that’s the challenge plus size people live with every day and it gets even worse if you’re shopping on a budget because low end plus size clothing is even more limited. Even Walmart has rolled back the amount of plus size clothes they carry and it’s ridiculous.
Prior to 2007 our local Walmart had an amazing plus size only no maternity in there that was there own space after the crash it’s never bounced back they’ve done what other places have rolled it way back & stuck it in the maternity section
All we’re told is we have more selection online
I loved that show! And they had to do a ton of research beforehand and call ahead to find stores that offered plus sizes. It would really suck if a plus sized person just lost their luggage and didn’t know where to go.
As a plus size woman who lives in Spain I have to say that unfortunately this video really reflects how non inclusive clothing brands are here.
I lived in Spain in 2005. Nothing has changed. I could never find clothing that didn't make me look like a sad old woman.
Plus size options in Europe is not a lot from memory. At my biggest 350lbs I struggled to get any clothing plus size tho it was 2005 & around then. By 2010 I was down to just under 155lbs and been that way ever since.
Shame on Mariana Rinaldo sales person being rude she needs to adjust her attitude you deserve better also prices are high in that store
Europe is not the kind of plus size friendly the US is. I want everyone to feel good about themselves but from my experience there are countries like Spain , Poland , Croatia etc. that don’t offer clothes in bigger than 3x (by the way, I’m from Europe, too) because there are considerably less plus size women living there
I know how you feel.... I am from Austria and my highest weight was 314 pounds... anyway you have no idea, how many times i went to some shops in Austria and the girls in the shop were just looking at me with a smirk on their faces and telling me: sorry, but we don't have clothes in THAT size. i used to feel like a monster... and: this was years ago - i was in my twentys and there was no possibility to buy any plus size clothes. it took me quiete some time (i should say years) to handle these situations, but what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
OMG I tried shopping as a size 16 in Paris. I'm currently wearing the only thing I bought that fit in the whole city: a sequined dog sweatshirt from H&M.
Geeze
I concur. The only way I was ever able to buy clothing that appealed to me as a size 18 in Paris was online, and not French stores, English stores.
Yes this is true. Its lucky to get a size 12 in france. Most sizes are a 4, 6, 8. Bra size only to a C cup. At least it kept me slim when living there
I remember going into one department in Galleries Lafayette, and it looked like they had a few plus size pieces. So I asked the saleswoman if they had my size and she said, in her French accent, "I'm sorry, we do not carry 3x". Since when is a size 16 a 3x????
@@mammajamma4397 they usually only do uk size 4,6,8 (i think usa size 0,2,4) in france/spain/italy. Bra size is 30A, B, C; 32A,B,C and 34A, B, C. They usually do not carry any sizes beyond this. So anything size 12 and above is not carried in majority of clothes shops. This means there is an actual conscience effort when you live there to stay within those clothes sizes so you can actually buy clothes.
You should have shopped for shoes. That’s what I ended up doing. In my experience, Spain doesn’t embrace plus size woman. If fact I had been told that many never leave their homes because of disapproval. A friend (who opened a hospital in Barcelona) told me that Bariatric surgery is/was a big boon there because of the pressure to be thin. Go to Germany…you’ll be spoiled for shopping choice there.
Depends on your shoe size though. I wear 9.5 US/40 European. I don’t know what it’s like now, but when I was young, it was nearly impossible to find women’s shoes in that size range in Southern Europe.
I am spanish, whoever told you that, he lied to you. There is pressure like everywhere else, but it is also true that cosmetic operations and bariatric operations are cheaper in Spain while having a really good medical system. It is difficult to find clothes in department stores but if you go to more specialized boutiques you can find whatever you need.
When I was young and a size 16/18, this was the kind of shopping experience I would have in a medium sized town. A small space in the rear of the department store with neutral shapeless garments. The sales staff tsking with disapproval. Thankfully the plus size community pushed for change and the choices improved considerably. When I traveled I made sure I carried on two outfits and undies because it is still hard to find clothes even now that fit, are affordable, and presentable. I was sorry that your trip was less than you hoped.
Kiabi is the place to go because their plus size section is quite big and nice.
I don’t think it’s fair the angle you are taking. I’ve been to Barcelona, you can also look around on your entire video. There was not one woman your size. Why would you expect the stores to stock clothes for people that don’t exist in their country?
I wrote in a comment that the tone of this video, in general, rubbed me the wrong way. It felt disrespectful towards the place and its people. I think you've hit the nail in the head with you analysis, the angle was not fair.
I’m 65 and I’ve been “fluffy” most of my life! We come in all shapes and sizes, design clothing for all!
You are pretty in pink. Congrats on fitting in a size 22. Sorry it was a bad experience. I understand what its like too. ❤
I'm confused because she's saying big is beautiful but then that losing weight is a good thing
There's no way she wears a 22
U should try shopping for plus when you are poor, it’s even worse!!!! 😢❤
I don’t want to sound rude Anna, but I’ve never seen anyone as big as you where I live in Spain. The grand majority of people here don’t need to shop in plus size stores so why would larger companies cater to the very few who do?. I hope you enjoyed your time in Spain otherwise!
Exactly. I don't know why she has any expectations of an abundance of plus size clothing when the majority of people in Europe are not plus size. It's basic economics of demand.
Southern Europe women are mostly slim or medium. Shopping a L or XL is even difficult. Try Germany, Netherlands, UK. There is more to shop.
I feel the same. As a german tourist in spain I loved it because everything in a size 32 (european sizing) is to big for me in Germany and often times not available lol but in spain it fitted nice:)
*Uh you do sound kind of rude Cristina. There is a nicer way to make the point.*
*Anna...it is so frustrating because the grand majority of Spain's population are*
*thin...so the larger companies cater to their thinner clientele! It's sad because*
*all sizes should be represented.*
@@mariannekalkman9058nope, not even in northern Europe you'll find people her size. People might be taller, but definitely slim. I've literally never seen one single person here (in Europe) as big as her
Ok Anna stop. I’m not plus size, I’m younger and I have floral dresses and a crochet fitted dress which I love so just stop.
Enjoy your trip and the fact that because of UA-cam you have the luxury to travel a lot more than most this year. I don’t feel sorry for you.
The fact that their isn’t enough plus size clothing stores to make you happy as you travel Europe is laughable.
OMG! I watched one of your videos where you said you were coming to Spain and I was so temped to warn you about this 😢. I am so sorry that you had such a difficult experience here.
I am a plus/mid-size girl myself and I almost exclusively shop online. Even now that I have lost a significant amount weight and closer to mid-size I am still afraid to go and shop in stores here, it’s still not a nice experience.
However, I would like to let you know that you work has been such a positive influence in my life. I love your videos and that you’ve inspired me so much over these last few years! I’ve been able to to start dressing in a way that shows my body instead of hiding it, I now pick colorful clothes and definitely show more skin 😂
Overall, I feel much better in my own skin (still working on it, though😅) and it’s videos and content like yours that help make the difference.
Thank you for making such fun, hones and openhearted content. It’s really appreciated.❤❤
Xx
PS. I’ve lived in Madrid and I believe The sex-shops were in the street that is known as “the prostitues street”. I guess it made sense to also put the shops there 🤣🤣🤣
I was watching the people coming in and out of the stores and noted that I did not see any plus size woman. On the other hand, there were plenty of plus size men. 🩵
Discrimination at its best
Sounds about right, its why i usually have to get mens clothes in the US
Plus size is mostly something found in the western world at least at her advanced size which is well outside any normal parameters, not going to find much by way of plus size clothing when traveling abroad.....it's a fairly well known fact, not sure why she is surprised, she's the size of like three people there?!?!
Rude
@@lollyann7630 She has class!
Thanks for the reality check. As more and more people are traveling it is great to have discussions about what they need to consider when doing so. Lost luggage is far too common of an occurrence not to consider what you will end up having to do if you are in a foreign nation and it happens to you.
It is not about availability but an entirely different culture and attitude towards food and activity. The US has some issues with what we eat and sedentary lives.
Yes where I live in the UK it depends just how plus-sized you are as to if you can find anything to fit you in the shops. There are online shops of course but if you are just out and about looking for plus-sized clothing you might struggle. I've lost weight and I'm more a size 20 now and slowly finding more choice as I get smaller. Let's face it though, most clothing companies seem to think plus-size only means a size 16.
I live in Spain and to be honest there are no plus size ladies with a size 22 or 24… They are not existing.. and that’s why there are no clothes.. Ladies in Spain try to be petite and always slim..
I'm a size 18-20 US (I'm not from the US, but I usually refer to their sizing) and was recently in Spain. I was by far the largest woman in most places I went to. You are right - the average sizes of Spanish people are smaller than in the US.
And that's rude, like being petite and slim is the best thing.
The “Problem“ is that profit driven companies only produce stuff for which there is a market and fortunately the average BMI in Spain (generally in Europe) is much lower than in the US
You give me courage. I'm always so shy because of my size to go out in public. But you do, and you own it beautiful woman! So, I can too. Thank you ❤ p.s. sorry Spain and that sales lady were unkind to you.
Baby, get out there! You get one life! Go out and live it.
I LOVED my trip to Barcelona!!
So sorry you went through this.
Its because there's no demand for plus size clothing your size..
It's unusual to see people of your size in Europe and in the UK.
They won't make what they can't sell.
Lots of love ❤❤❤❤
Petting a dog is always a win in my book
Well Anna be honest, did you see any people the same size as you? So why being embarassed? Companies know very well if there is a market for......
Europe in general shops plus size online unfortunately.
Let's be honest USA is a better place to shop for plus size people because people there is taller and maybe bigger more often than in Europe.
Spain is not a plus size country, people here tend to be smaller just look at the people in the video, regular sizes rule
To be honest. We dont Really see a lot of people your size. Thats why our shops dont sell the sizes.
Look around you. Are you aware you are in 2 major stylish cities and you are wearing a bathing suit? God Almighty read the room, country and city. Nobody is wearing a nasty bathing suit there.
As you said at 7:10, "Some things are just not worth fighting for." I hope you didn't let a shopping trip ruin all fun things to see and do in Spain. I had an absolute blast when I went.
Many other countries have way less percentage of shoppers looking for plus size, Europe seems to be that way. You have to do your homework for sure to find shops.
WoW!!!!...I'm feeling about as disappointed as you...This is somewhere I have dreamed to visit but I guess there is not shopping for me there being a plus size gurl also...
welcome to my world
I started sewing my own stylish wardrobe because stores only used to carry beige boring plus sizes
It would have been kind of you to put the oatmeal cardigan back where you found it instead of slinging it over a rack.
I love this series!
Sad to see you having a rough time there Anna, but your experience was real. Its cool as a European to see people from other regions appreciate the differences between northern and Southern European countries, and notice how wildly different they are.
The only country where you Could you get big sizes it’s England and Germany. In rest of the country it’s impossible to find. They will not have business. People have good and more natural then US. I was living in Europe, and I am 20 only .Zxm
As a plus-size woman living in Finland, this was a reality check for me. I thought we had it bad here, but the contrast between the video of you shopping in Finland and this video... Wow. I really hope my luggage never gets lost when I travel to Spain!
I life in Europe and to be fair especially in countries like Spain, Italy, France … women are in general pretty small… I think plus size clothes (size 20 +) are just not needed…
16:00 Good for you finding the silver lining in a bad situation. Congratulations on your weight loss 🥰
Spain is not the country to shop plus size, look around when you are walking .
Not Many plus size people
I didn't even see people who were 1/2 of Anna's weight in the background.
Went to Barcelona several years ago and struggled because only one Mango location out of 10+ had plus size. They only had a handful of pieces but they had something. Also went to the department store El Corte Ingles and was able to find a few pieces as well!
The dress is at least beautiful and I'm proud of you for being in a size 22 now. Thanks for sharing.
You are great and that shopping experience sucked!! Come to Canada. We have great boutiques and stores that cater to all sizes . It might not be exotic like Europe but it’s super friendly and we love woman of every size . Congratulations on the new dress size yayyyy!!
I live in Europe and we're not used to seeing people THAT big here.
Seriously she is the size of three people and just expects clothing I size 22-24 to be readily available, so much entitlement I was suffering second hand embarrassment!!!!
I lived in Spain for four months about 25 years ago, and had the same experience. I bought a lot of bags and jewelry 😂😂😂 Because this was before online shopping exploded, I had to have a friend send me a care package from Lane Bryant when I really needed pants. I remember I had ro buy some men's shirts in the largest size I could find and men's shoes when I neede them (I wear a size 11 in women's)
Despite the dismal experience you had shopping for plus-sized clothing depicted in this video, I love that you were rockin' your bright yellow plus-sized sundress and bold blue dangly earrings showing the non-inclusive shopping districts how its done. Good for you!
Flamingo in Barcelona! It's secondhand, but that's where I found actually cute plus-size options. Clothes-shopping-wise I always have better luck thrifting than new in Spain.
oh interesting, i find thifting impossible in Berlin as shops don't generally display their stock by size
I visited Barcelona in april. I’ve been there before, so I knew, that I shouldn’t go clothes-shopping. I’m always a bit scared, if my luggage is lost. There is no way I can get any clothes in southern Europe. I live in north-Europe; I rarely buy clothes in real stores.
You are very outgoing and sure of yourself. A lot of women don't have your kind of confidence with their bodies. Don't let ignorant people take that away from you. And that pink dress is your color, you look fabulous, darling.
I went to Spain this summer, and I noticed that there were very few people my size. If I did see someone my size, they were from the US. I went into a few stores, and there was NOTHING in my size! I wear a plus 18.
what you went through I went through the same thing every back to school when we went school shopping! I get it it can tear you down so fast
I'm not "plus size" but i am mid size, i also find this stuff so fascinating like if i lose my luggage in a foreign country could i find what i need to be cute and comfy.
Try shopping in Singapore! I’m a size 14/16 and I cannot shop in any store here for clothes. I have to buy every single clothing item online. And there are definitely plus size people here. Definitely not the majority, but they are here.
I love your videos. So honest and real. This breaks my heart. You are a beautiful woman inside and out. I know how it feels to feel what you feel. Keep finding your joy… and keep petting those doggies! Sending love and hugs. 🫶
Maybe this is a market for you to open up PS store in Spain
I love your sunglasses!!! That shopping sucked! 😢
Limited options in stores is why I only shop online. Since it's a risk, I end up trying an item in 2 diff sizes, so I always pay double and have the hassle of returning most of the order.
Spanish and Italian clothes typically tend to be smaller, or size is not consistent; I can forget Zara, Mango even their fabrics are pretty. For me I find better quality clothing that fit well from C&A, Arket and COS.
My experience 30 years ago in Europe was there was no plus size.....because European woman were all very thin. Back then the options in the US were limited to Lane Bryant.
We have Mango in the UK. Also C&A was a store we had until late 80’s. In the UK now, as far as I know (as I don’t shop in store often), we only have one store that caters for plus size and it’s a lot more expensive than the rest! Even stores that do plus size online don’t have any plus size section in store.
You think Spain is bad, don't go to the Asian countries.
I’m a male with a 36 inch waist and was told while on holliday in Hong Kong we don’t carry big sizes.I didn’t sulk about it I still had the best time ever in a wonderful place
@@hunterelliott4772Yes, Anna is very rude. She goes somewhere with slim people and expects them to cater to her: food, stylish clothes that also have to fit her, larger chairs, bigger airplane seats...seems like she's deliberately finding fault with everything. She even insulted the whole city of Barcelona. Entitled and ungrateful.
@@samanthajayewardene4523 I think she is so body dysmorphia she sees herself way smaller than she actually is.I was watching her today about that running school she goes to and how running is safe for people of every size and how the school has bodies of all sizes. She showed pics of the people in the group and the largest runner was half the size of Anna but I feel in her mind she sees herself being their size.
Portugal is the same way. I accidentally left my winter jacket in Morocco and when I got to Lisbon, it was freezing. Went to every store I could fine and nothing. Had to finally squeeze into the largest size they had, and I was miserable for the rest of my trip.
Shop on line or shop US before you go. Window shopping won't kill you. You are an atypical size, get over it or do something about it. Unfortunately, the world isn't obligated to accommodate your excessive weight.
My biggest fear traveling being plus size…having to replace clothing in other countries
I felt like s fortune teller, you said:"Im going to C&A" I was like: hmmm only dark shapeless stuff girl. You said you were going to Primark, I knew the biggest size is XXL there only in "funny -shirts". I travel around Europe a lot and it's definitely not much better in the other parts of the continent. H&M has also some terrible yet plus size stuff, Marks & Spencer has a good piece once in a blue moon and Ulla Popken is always there if you want to dress up as rebellious grandma.
haha that is a good definition of Ulla Popken - reminds me of Australia's Taking Shape (and not in a good way)
Spanish ladies are generally quite slim, similar to the French
I feel you! I’m from
Germany and a lot of stores do have my size (XXL) but not all. And a lot of those stores have more stuff, like you said, to hide my body. I hate in store shopping. That’s why I order online.
I’m Portuguese whenever we travel to Portugal we buy plus size at the flea markets only. It’s either to expensive in stores or not big enough
That was a horrible experience for me, and I was just watching the video. Every store, no matter what country should have plus size. Plus size people are just a beautiful as, small people. Anna, you're beautiful no matter how big, or how small. Love your videos.
I am sorry you couldn't find anything. I travel and shop regularly in Spain. I am from the UK and am currently a US size 16. I am generally able the find things but they are often the biggest size in the store. When I look around I am also often the biggest size person around. Most of the Mediterranean countries have smaller people. I have also noticed that as a rule they wear more muted tones. None of this makes your experience invalid but I think you are ignoring some of the cultural and factual differences between countries. Because there is a smaller and more spread market, online plus size brands seem to be the option for plus people in Europe. As a side note I think you would have a better experience shopping in the UK but don't expect that same colour palette. A high portion of Europeans prefer muted tones and find Amercian fashion a bit extra. It is just different, not better or worse but please do respect the differences in style. Pulling your face at another countries fashion styles because you don't like them is quite rude. All differences are good and as someone who encourages people to embrace difference I would hope you would see that you are not be respectful here.
C&A in the uk in the 80s and 90s was primarily suits. Its where i used to get my high school uniform from. They no longer exist in the uk but u can find c&a's all over europe.
On another note; your hair looks lovely and the yellow really suits you x
Its not different in Austria. The biggest sizes that you can get in stores are 18/20 when youre lucky. Im wearing 12/14 and have trouble when shopping. Its supply and demand 🤷🏻♀️
Gotta remember Spain is hard core patriarchal. Men rule most companies.
C&A is actually owned by a german-dutch family. And if you google you can find quite a lot of interesting and reasonable critique. Wouldn't shop there. Same with Mango, H&M, Zara and all the other companies for similar reasons 😢
I absolutely love your attitude lmao "polish a turd" REPRESENT for all the BIG women! That's why I hate shopping.
"How many black shirts and black pants does one sad woman need" i feel called out lmao.
Well, that dress is super duper cute, and classy, and I'd love to see it styled after being ironed, with complementary shoes, maybe tan sandals.
Youre moving again??? 😮
That guy you walked past was checking you out 👏
I remember visiting Barcelona and yep plus size clothes shopping was abysmal! Only things I bought there were some unique costume jewelry pieces. The food was amazing tho and their open air markets were incredible.
Britain is pretty good for plus size but not really in actual shops... I don't even bother looking when I'm abroad, unless I'm in Germany
There is a Spanish influencer that lives in Spain and has the same issue she is plus size also. Just imagine living there and not being able to shop like anyone else it's very discrimination all bodies deserve to shop and be respected
Was this filmed last fall?
Was just there a few months ago… same issue with getting plus size clothing . I was able to get by with some Zara pieces. It’s rough over there 😢
I like the pink dress. Im sorry that the shopping wasnt great. If i ever needed to buy anything i would be out of luck. I do love watching your videos and they take me to places that i would like to go sometime.❤
Sorry ,but you did know that in southern europe women are not as big as in the US ! Its just demand and offer , women who wear more than 2XXL are less than 3 % ..sorry
This is sooo sad! When I read the title I knew this was gonna happen! I've been living in Spain for 12 years and i wear a regular L or sometimes an Xl and even for me it ist sometimes hard to find clothes that fit. This is just crazy!!!
The pink dress you bought is obviously too tight on you. Look at how the buttons are gaping & stretching across the bust. Size up. Who cares what size it is? It’s just a number.
