This manga needs more love! The art is breathtaking and the amount of creativity that's put into its magic system is amazing. I wish more people talked about it.
One thing you didn't mention is the paneling.. literally the top 3 paneling in all of manga imho. Just an amazing manga overall, this will end up as a classic for me.
This manga quickly became one of my favourites! It's magic is so unique and interesting, story so engaging and the characters are lovely! (also, Qifrey hot) I'm so glad that you made video about this, thank you!
i recently started reading WHA and i'm really glad i found this video! WHA's magic system is so fun and the problem solving aspect of it makes the story all the more exciting. loved the video and i'm looking forward to more :D
Yes! The prospec of writing/ drawing the spells is so nice!! Kamome may have inspiration from the seals and spells from oriental culture but the simbols in the manga remind me more of nordic runes. The worldbuilding here is so wonderfull
What I love to see is that because it is such a magic of possibility that fans of the series come up with their own spells too! You can break down a problem in the real world or the WHA world and see if you can create a magical spell using the simple - yet elegant - magical rules put forward in the manga. That is something really special, to be able to involve your own imagination and creativity into the heart of this world and its systems. It truly is magical!
Beautifully explained video. I'm currently reading through this manga right now, and it has been such an amazing experience- in part due to Shirahama's gorgeous art, but also like you said, due to the brilliantly designed and equally beautifully excecuted magic system. Like many of my favorite magic systems, it's written to be an seamlessly tied in the worldbuilding, plot, and character writing. But the excecution of this system is what really wows me- there are so many genius ways that glyphs are used, from simple sylph shoes, to the jaw-dropping ways characters innovate to alter, expand, and create spells to solve problems, all the while playing into each person's unique personalities. Very few stories have managed to inspire such awe and wonder for me, and at such a consistent rate too.
Thank you thank you! I really love Witch Hat Atelier and how it makes anything feel possible, and I think you bring up a really good point that the magic system is so well incorporated into the world building and I think that really lends itself well to the credibility of that magic!
I love the witch hat magic system because I can cast the spells to. It's fun to sit with a problem the characters are facing and try to solve it before you see their solution. I can also come up with my own spells and draw them out. Sure they don't have any effect but they're tangible and it's so fun
A fellow Hello Future Me subscriber, I see (haha yes). I remember picking this manga up because of my sister, and I was SO impressed with how straightforward and functional the magic system was. I always had a soft-magic bias, but Tongari Boushi's/Witch's Hat's hard magic system blew me away with how simple yet versatile it was. It's such a smart system that I almost slapped myself because I didn't think of it first. Great video, @Tsumami.
This manga is wonderful, I love it! I'm also psyched for the anime adaptation! And what can I say? The magic system is very interesting and I relate so much with Coco and Agott's stories and personalities, and Qifrey's teaching profession. I hope this work gets more recognition, I consider Kamome Shirahama as one of the best mangakas of this generation. I'll be waiting for the next volumes.
This is a really good video essay about what witch hat really achieved. This is exactly the reason why i was so enthralled by it when i started reading. And now I can't wait for each new chapter to come.
hey, found your video in the WHA subreddit and was impressed by the quality. Keep it up!! Witch Hat has my favorite magic system and I'm in love with its world. Kamome Shirahama really drew something wonderful here
I recommend watching UA-camr - Lines in Motion’s take on Witch Hat Atelier’s impressive manga panelling. Absolutely worth it. And I agree, this manga is fantastic.
Wow your channel is such a hidden gem! I love your editing style and structure of your videos. When I first found this channel I thought it at least had like 50k subscribers but I was super surprised to see that you don’t have more because it would be very well deserved. To have such high quality videos out the gate is really amazing! Keep up the great work!
About the problem with the instant kill spell in Harry Potter, there is some logic to it you seem to have missed. I read the book many years ago, but i recall the crazy eyed man saying that the spell relies of deep hatred to work. If all the students in class yelled the incantation at him, he’d just lose a few hairs. Most likely the people chasing harry didn’t have the hatred to make the spell effective.
This is the only Japanese comic series I have because not only does it check off all my fav boxes (fantasy setting, magic, unique world, etc.), but I got tired of all the stupid "fanservice" Japanese products got nowadays that ruin stories for me.
Every so often just distracted by the OoT music in the background... ^.^' But I am loving this series the more I hear about it and I think I'll be getting it soon.
actually the magic in Witch Hat Atelier is similar to Owl house. Like Coco, Luz (mc of Owl house) is a normal human being that winded herself up in a magical world where there are witches. Luz creates magic by making a sigil/seal. Though in Owl house the witches are actually born with magic, Luz found out the sigil/seal in the magic performed by her mentor and she draw the seal in paper, tapping the paper to activate it. So it's pretty similar in a way...
@@cosmo2590 Oooo okay that's cool, but fyi I didn't point out that witch hat atelier 'copied' that idea I just compared the two series. I love how both series depict magic in it's own way so no hate :)
that's fine. I mean look at the Pope he has HOLY MAGIC EX (all light and holy magics only cost half their actual MP consumption and doesn't require chant). I only attained 3 sacraments so my incantation only amounts to Holy +3.
@@Tsumamii but seriously though, the video made me appreciate witch hat alot more than before. The genius of implementing the mechanic of sigil making on top of careful consideration of the layering and panelling of the pages goes to show why Kamome Shirahama is one of my favourite manga artists of all time, balancing it's art and it's plot hand in hand

just wait till the anime airs and it'll explode in popularity inevitably.
The manga really make that fascination grow in me as chapters keep going with that creativity✨

I have a head canon for Amon's abilities to take away bending. Water bending, more specifically blood bending, can block your chakra points.

oh believe me I have seen their video and it’s absolutely beautiful, hands down a better video than mine
Its super mechanical, physically & function-wise. Because so, it explains ALL magic, known & unknown.
My boy's back with the heat 🔥😤
Yessir he’s back with that fuego🔥

hot damn you are underrated, great vid btw! Witch hat atelier truly is a wonderful story.
thank you thank you! the wait for volume 8 is slowly killing me hahaha

Ngl artists would be good witches
How come you have 33 subscribers at minimum deserve 10k (100k imo)
awwww much appreciated!
1 chapter a month tho 🙃
It’s funny you mentioned atla. It goes to show how even with a hard magic system, a story is still susceptible to deus ex machina.
Damn, really wanted to enjoy Witch Hat Atelier, but being a catholic really makes me want to hate the series, smh
break the mold roland I believe in you

Woah, woah, woah. Totally unnecessary potshot on Catholics 🥲 JRR Tolkien was STRONGLY Catholic.
