All he's ever wanted to be, Is a rockstar on rage or MTV, But he knows it's not fuckin' likely. He's just turned 30, He knows he'll always be AN OLIVIER AWARD WINNING COMPOSER, LYRICIST AND LEGEND!!!
The sheer force of this performance, the indomitable rage that oozes from every syllable defines the commitment of this performer. Not to mention the way the lyrics are imbued with a very real pain, not just of performance, but of experience. Here is a man pouring his very soul into his art, drawing on what is no doubt his 'own brooding potential' to transmit something that needs to be more than spoken, something that has to be felt. It is this immeasurable 'something' that makes a good man great.
Some people commenting that this is less edgy and more straightforward than his usual stuff: I don't think it's a spoiler to say that within the context of the musical, this is actually about Phil Connors repeatedly trying to commit suicide (only to wake up the next day, every day). So Tim has taken the vocabulary of a typical inspirational ballad and twisted it round a dark subject matter. Also there's a neat Dorothy Parker reference in there!
Andrew Evans wait a minute. Before I even read your comment I was getting serious Phil Collins vibes from this song. I went back after reading your comment and tried to identify exactly what made me think of Collins and all I can say is upon rewatching, I got serious goosebumps. This must have been intentional? Am I crazy? This made me so happy
T R I G G E R Love Tim's performance, bringing him to his limits. Vocally. - Many of us have been or are "at dark places:. Not excluding myself. I'd like to add a TRIGGER warning here. Those lyrics are really inspirational - in a bad way 😢
Has everyone here listened to the lyrics properly? He reveals that he's never giving up "hope" that he might be able to finally successfully kill himself. I'm surprised there's a few people saying this isn't very clever, or good. It's a pretty superb paradox.
I swear to you I've tried And sometimes I just wanna give up Just give up and stay here and live But I know there's no point in denying That I will keep trying I'm a lot of things but I'm not a quitter Well in the context of the movie, whatshisface keeps trying to kill himself soo, it's not really from tims perspective
Honestly listening to your catalogue in chronological order today and THEN finding this ... I am Weeping with joy and despair ... fuck Tim you changed the world
I saw the show with my wife. I wasn't sure what to expect since I love the movie so much, but we were both very pleasantly surprised. It was a great show.
This is amazing. Is my sneaky suspicion, that Tim delivers a much more emotional version here than the version which was performed on stage in the musical, warranted? I've only seen clips of the UK/Broadway versions, but they don't seem to have the raw emotion of Tim's performance. Very sad that it was cancelled. US audience not able to cope with its level of darkness? Should we yanks grow up a bit? 7 Tony noms can't be wrong. Plus the Oliviers.
I wish he would release an album of him singing all these songs. Not that I don't like the artists from the broadway show but it's just interesting to hear him sing the songs he wrote for the show.

"Hope'...it's self, has wounded my being far worse than "Fear' or 'Hatred' ever have... What's worse, is the fact that "...there is always tomorrow" ...is precisely the problem because, it never seems to end...the pain will not die without you..!! So it's won, the pain...or we were always one in the same..!!

Oh HOLY SHEET. That was incredible. I thought I knew everything Tim available on YT. I’m glad to find I’m wrong, while simultaneously peeved that it’s taken so long for YT to go, oh, yeah, there’s this..
He so looks like thannos, at 3:20 just love Tim though. I love his comedy, and now this new flavour of music is just... Fucking A! Our rock n' roll nerd has blown us all away. 💜
France voted to remain in Europe, because they have faith in it, and they hope for a better future with it. They could have also given up hope, and voted with fear instead, leaving the EU and closing off their borders to foreigners. One isn't necessarily better or worse than the other. But the left vote is one based stronger on hope, so it's just more relevant to this video. I think saying "hope won for France" isn't some virtue signal, it's not claiming that hope is better. It's just a statement that hope won, because a vote to remain in the EU, and remain open to foreigners and other religions, is a vote based on hope. Just my 2 cents though, you could look at it a different way. And you could see it as a virtue signal, it's all down to your perspective really...
Frankly, I believe that all of us would find that not just living forever, but having to live forever, to ultimately be far more terrifying than death: At least we all do get to die. - j q t - 2019
It's about suicide attempts. Listen closely to the lyrics, especially at the end. Phil's trapped in an endless cycle and losing it. "Faith" refers to his way out.

I was about to reply with "he's actually in his 40s" before I realised exactly how far that joke went over my head.
Anyway in my favourite version he says that's his age.
Cute!
Jack Sharples haha not to worry Jack we've still got your back
I feel like some of this audience have absolutely no idea what they just witnessed tbh
He wears shoes!!! I do not know whether to be proud of him or disappointed by him
I didn't even notice them..... I just stared at the tie in complete disbelief.
No eye shadow either... oh well
This song requires two boots
Eseem respect!
Well he's not 'In-Character' and promoting his Broadway show... so the shoes and eye liner (lack of) are totally acceptable!
I would've loved to see a special one-off performance where Tim played Phil

"Gutted me utterly" sounds like it could be in a Tim Minchin song.

Tim Minchin is the perfect person to play Elton John in a movie about him.
Eh, maybe one day he'll be as good as him

Well now that Rocketman happened and it was great, that is incorrect. We need him to play Gerard Way in a My Chemical Romance movie
