After all these years convincing myself that I just can't get the coordination down to play Dust in the Wind, you said Both inside outside inside both and I said DUH! This is incredibly easy! Thank you so much for sharing this. You're teaching style is A1 and I can't thank you enough! Great video! Great channel!
I find it amazing how Jake can go for minutes at a time without even looking at his guitar, talk and play his guitar without missing a beat, all the while looking right into the camera.
I have been trying this song for a few days and had the pattern down exactly the same but just couldn’t quite get it in time, the both, inside, outside, inside, both. Oh yes thank you so much it’s just clicked, and it’s wonderful. 👍
i love dust in the wind, i remember learning the intro through a tab a long time ago. your vid made me want to really get the picking down and apply it elsewhere, thanks!
By far one of the best videos on Travis picking. Please consider "Helplessly Hoping", I know there are many videos of this classic out there but it would be just a pleasure to watch you play.
You should do a lesson on fingerstyle and focus on opeth stuff. Their acoustic parts are quite intricate and would appreciate your knowledge and technique insights on their songs and overall style. Thank you for the awesome content as always!
I like how you break things down! Thank you. I just would like to add-don't know if it's some anatomical aspect of my fingers or what-but I had an ahah moment when, relatively late in my music life, I realized I'm much better off emphasizing my thumb/middle/ring fingers over my thumb/index/middle fingers. Maybe I have a short index?! I hope at least one person also has an ahah with this comment!
I can finger pick but i wish it could do it fast, like classical players. Listen to conquer or die by Megadeth if you haven't, that song has some nice finger picking in the intro
Whoo! Good luck, just take things slow and give yourself a good 20 minutes for the pattern to get "programmed" into your fingers. After that, you should be able to start developing speed in the pattern. Remember to pause for the quarter note!
Best explanation of this classic. You kept it simple and ... dammit... easier to master than I imagined. Keep up your great work. Appreciation form the Great White North.
I've never Hurd of the "Travis picking" until 2week ago but I'm good at picking things up but for the last 20years I've been picking with three fingers the standard picking and at the mo it's frustrating that my fingers are not working with each other is there another way to retrain my fingers cheers Jake
Terrific video! Can you do a travis picking lesson on Sligo River Blues by John Fahey?? Its just a tad more technical with its melody timing which makes it all the more difficult
Can anyone tell me if I should keep clipping my nails on my picking hand? I ask because I see professionals with long nails when they pick but when mine are growing they get in my way & pluck other strings. I keep mine short but theirs are long ish??? Anyone else need theirs short? Obviously my fretting nails are very short. Oh my..the sacrifices we make, I used to love getting my nails done at a salon as well😩✌
It certainly helps to have fingernails for a song like this, but it isn't a requirement. If it were any faster or used more strings, I'd say you pretty much need to have nails.
Kamron - You don't really need _long_ fingernails either. Just about a sixteenth of an inch will do. The most important thing is that they are well manicured and smooth. Get used to carrying a nail file in your guitar case!
i can play the notes . but i am using my middle finger for the B string, everything is same buttt i feel like i am missing something in this song when i play it myself i cant get the bass beat sound right .. any suggestions
I don't quite know what you mean by you "can't get the bass beat sound right." If you mean the bass isn't coming out loudly and distinctly--yes, that can be a problem when you're playing with your thumb; therefore, some persons grown out their thumbnail (really, all their nails) on their left hand, OR they play with a thumb pick. Using one of these methods will give you more clarity and volume. Another option is to play into a microphone. But if you mean that your timing or rhythm is wrong, then you just have to count and use a metronome. 1 2+ 3+ 4+ (you say it this way: "one, two and, three and, four and, " etc.) As you say a number, pluck with your thumb.
If you're using an acoustic, those strings shouldn't ring out unless you accidentally hit them. If that's happening, then you should try making smaller pick strokes with your fingers so they don't accidentally hit incorrect strings. If you watch my fingers in this video, during the pattern, my hand barely moves- just my fingers are doing the work. If my hand starts moving around, it'll be more likely that I get out of "position" and start picking wrong strings. Hope this helps!

Holy cow, 4 minutes in and I can finger pick. I love you.
This guy is the perfect teacher.. Very clear. His voice is also very good.. And more importantly.. He is. Knowledgeable.
I find it amazing how Jake can go for minutes at a time without even looking at his guitar, talk and play his guitar without missing a beat, all the while looking right into the camera.
throw in the fact that he has the maturity and effectiveness in communicating concepts akin to a 50 year old.....the fellow is quite remarkable.
Thank you Sir. You r such a wonderful teacher mentor. The way you teach is just tremendous. Thanks again
Amazing lesson of transferring a picking pattern Jake. Thanks very much!
I'd love to see you breaking down Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac. That lead+bass riff is quite difficult)
Jake your tutorials gave me hope again.. thanks my rockstar...
I think i just found my new favorite youtube channel

Good lesson on the Travis finger picking. Thank You.
I remember my high school friends amazed seeing me play this fingerpicking and sing along.
Thanks for showing me how to play this. Your simple easy intructions were so easy to follow. Keep up the great work.
i love dust in the wind, i remember learning the intro through a tab a long time ago. your vid made me want to really get the picking down and apply it elsewhere, thanks!
Very nice. I enjoyed that. Keep em' coming.
Thank you, I can finally fingerpick after several attempts in the past!
By far one of the best videos on Travis picking. Please consider "Helplessly Hoping", I know there are many videos of this classic out there but it would be just a pleasure to watch you play.
Awesome as always. I have nearly zero skill in this area, so this is pointing me in the right direction.
I wish you made the next part of the song. You teach very well and are easy to follow. Thank you
Fabulous lesson 👌👌👌👌
I'm already pretty good at fingerstyle but I never realized how simple a pattern this song was. Great lesson as always!
Really terrific explanation! Nice work!
Excellent lesson.... thank you very much.
Great lesson 👍🏼👌
Thanks Jake
This song and Dear Prudence were my first 2 Travis picking songs.
Awesome teaching friend🙏🔑✌️

Mr. Metalhorse Just keep practising. You'll eventually get there. :)
Mr. Awesomeness, Jake, the Travis pickin' adjustment shredder
Great video, thanks so much! Will check out more from you.
Great lesson!
That was fun! Never learned to play this song, always seemed a lot more complicated than zhis.. I'll try it now! Alright?

Clear as a bell thanks!!
Ty you teach well
Cool perfect thanks

great stuff man!
Gosh; Thanks so much !
After this lesson I cant complain anymore that I dont get it (!)
More Travis picking lessons por favor...
I really liked the visuals of notes and patterns. Do have something I can print out for dust in the wind?
You have a radio voice. You should think about a career in broadcasting. Thanks for the lesson by the way.

Sounds like you got a new acoustic.
Great job. I'd much rather take an element of a song and turn it into a series of exercises than worry over covering the song. Better value.
Can you do a video about the style of dire straits/mark knopfler?
Allllllrightttt

Do you recommend long fingernails for this?

Which guitar is this one? Can you tell me please?
What was that little transition chord you did at the very end of the intro?
Really liked your videos dude 👍keep it up 🍻
And if you're interested in doing some acoustic jam just let me know 😆

muito bom ....
How do you keep the 1 and 6 strings from ringing?

U almost played paradise city with the g c f
It's called alternating bass note
I love finger picking but I could never grow my nails like that. My wife would leave me and it makes me gag
Many years ago a friend of mine used finger picks. I found them awkward but he was happy with them.
I'm a trim guy too. I was a rhythm guitar guy first...I could not have long nails in my strumming style.
*damn i love you*
👍
Gotta be the most complicated version this song ...
My finger tips turning to hurt...
