"The very best time to plant a tree is 25 years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is today.” - Dr. Malcolm Guidry

I have a Live Oak in the back yard.
Merely 25 years old, and provides a great canopy of shade. Loves the heat and sandy soil and really does well to attracts local wildlife from squirrels to crows and small birds alike.
Storms. No issues. Drought. Tough as nails. This tree could live for over 1000 years.

After living in Florida during my college years I came to love these trees. I now own a house with 20 acres and have planted 50 Live Oaks around the property. Some are now 20 years old and are beautiful. I’ve brought up some Spanish moss from the Carolinas and put it in the largest tree. It has survived so far and actually sprouted new moss. I am in Southeast Virginia near the Chesapeake Bay north of Virginia Beach

I love live oaks, especially with the Spanish moss.

Dr. Malcolm Guidry, LSU's Live Oak expert, did a consult for us many years ago during the August heat. When I suggested thinning out the tree branches to allow more light, he said, "You can't buy this kind of shade!" It was easily 10 degrees cooler under the tree than in the direct sunshine. Unfortunately, it's a constant pain trying to keep the branches off our two-story house or from spreading over our neighbor's house and yard. On the plus side, it brings in a lot of birds and squirrels, which are fun to watch.

I bought several Quercus Virginiana (Live Oak) in E Texas and planted in Oxford MS zone 7a in 2000. Now 23 years later they're doing fine w the largest 6" diam and 25 ft high. I was worried about the zone 8 or above rating but there have been winters in past years of 7 deg F and this last winter it went down to 0 deg F. For the first time all the leaves dropped but the live oaks came back strong. Yesterday was 100 deg F. Never watered or fertilized.

My dad planted two in North Alabama back in the 1960's. They grew to about 30 ft by 2008, when the new owners cut down every tree in the yard. His would bend over to the ground every winter during the coldest period. They do not like the cold. But they lived and bounced back each spring. If I had the space...

My live oaks shed like dogs, lol. All 9 of ours take turns dropping leaves and that’s around 3 times a year. Great show and thanks for bringing attention to my favorite tree.

My favorite live oaks grow in the New Orleans Botanical Garden. Among many named trees is the Dueling Oak, with its own unique history. Children love to climb the trees that droop to the ground and many people photograph their children there.

Check out all the amazing live oaks in downtown Ocean Springs. You can also see them at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. So beautiful and it makes me want to put one in my yard.

I grew up in Florida and Georgia and imprinted on these trees. Plus my father raised them and wax myrtles in his retirement nursery in Melbourne, Florida. Under good conditions, live oaks can put on 24" a year. Not really slow!

I would suggest you visit Eden State Park in Santa Rosa Beach Florida (the panhandle of Florida and my hometown). The gardens feature Camellias and azaleas as well as a several hundred year old Virginia live Oak that I’m sure you’ll find amazing. I would love to see you do a video there. The ornamental gardens are the main attraction of the park and are stunning. You will not be disappointed.

Think your neighbor that does bonsai could turn a young one of these into a bonsai? 🤔 Would be so beautiful if it were possible. 😊

I set aside a huge area of my yard to plant a S. Live Oak 4 years ago, after moving to Georgia. Hasn’t grown an inch. Looks really healthy… trunk circumference has quadrupled and it’s even producing tiny acorns, but it’s still the same 4 ft height as when I planted it. I know they prefer coastal sandy soul (I’m just above the fall line in Augusta), but I wanted our state tree in the yard, so I set aside a huge full-sun area on our corner lot. Looks like I set aside .2 acres of lawn for a bonsai😂. Maybe I’m over-watering? Or, maybe it’s constricted in the Piedmont clay?

So these trees I brought up from Florida will not do well in sandy soil in northern Michigan. I dug them up from the general area we spent the winter at. I noticed the tap roots were already very deep for such small trees.

  • @markwalker556
    @markwalker556 10 місяців тому +1

Thank you for that information. But no one should plant a Live Oak in any “garden”. Once established it’s almost impossible to transplant because the tap root goes so far down into the soil. These trees need to be planted away from your house and any buildings unless you plan on constantly pruning them to control their spreading branches

Out in the open away from any building unless you want to constantly prune them. Also, nothing grows underneath them including grass so keep that in mind

Wow it’s magnificent. I really want an oak to help support wildlife. Should I plant a southern live oak or is there a better oak that’s great for the home garden? I guess I could also just let a weedy oak seedling in my garden grow on. 😮❤
