  • Dog training expert Sarah Fisher explains how to train your dog to walk on a lead nicely using various types of harnesses and leads.
If you have heard that harnesses can encourage more pulling on dog walks rather than helping to stabilise the dog, then this video will definitely give you something to consider.
Using the 'two points of contact' technique, a harness can be very helpful when used to walk your dog on a daily basis or used as part of a training programme to help dogs overcome particular issues related to shoulder bracing and neck tension such as aggression, reactivity, pulling on the lead and over excitement.
Sarah talks through the benefits of using a simple 2 point of contact technique to allow a harness to become a truly valuable tool to help stop your dog pulling on the lead, including tips on how best to apply the training.
Sarah also explains for us the huge importance of releasing the pressure on a dog's neck area, for both physical reasons and behavioural ones.

I’d like to see you do this with a dog that actually pulls, I used a slip lead with my dog, with engagement and a couple of corrections he was walking by my side in about 5 minutes.

i tried slip lead for 6 months on my boxador. only works when the lead is at the top of the neck. after few minutes it drops down and he starts pulling again,.

Have 2 now 5 month old Kangal x Sarplaninac. Used slip leash & was ok but worried about neck stress. Tried prong collar once but saw their spirit break immediately. Had good harnesses from very beginning but got crazy pulling Then tried 2 point attachment like video & worked good Then just used front attachment walking 2 dogs at once & works super great. I use good Ruffwear Harnesses

I have a husky she’s about 56 pounds and I just bought a rabbitgoo. Harness and I wanna make sure that I’m feeding it properly on her.. when I looked it up on Amazon, for a husky, it said to buy a large one. So that’s what I bought. No I just wanna make sure I’m putting it on properly.

Getting a harness for a husky is like giving a boxer a pair of gloves and asking him not to punch you. Harness literally mean to harness the dogs strength, a husky works pulling a sledge in a harness. Why would you think it won’t pull you

It is a TTouch harness with a double ended lead. You can find them on xtradog.training or on tilley farm website

This doesn't help show how to use this to stop a dog pulling. If it is considered that pilot pulls from that short clip, it's nothing compared to my dog pulling.

I feel your pain!! I walk my neighbor's dog, he's a 75 lb Pittie, and he pulls like crazy, I've had him on a harness ever since I started walking him. I've been walking him for 2 years and people still ask me, "Who is walking who"? I just tell them we trade off.

Great in theory but walking your dog and hold the lead with BOTH hands is not enjoyable and bad for your back.

I truly believe gaining control psychologically is much more humane than trying to continually trying to gain control physically. Using a harness is gaining physical control.
Horses are controlled psychologically, not physically.

Desperate, within minutes the poor dog has developed an unnatural gait, listing to onside like a sinking ship. Harnesses are just a marketing gimmick for which the dog pays.
