Hi Kat! Former black widow owner here and just wanted to let you know, sometimes black widows can lay eggs regardless of being paired with a male. So keep an eye out, you might get an egg sac regardless.
Ive also found that as long as you are calm around the spider the spider will be calm around you, the last thing they want to do is waste venom on something that is not preyt. They are very misunderstood, gentle spiders. You'll even see that she will drop old prey out of her web to keep her web clean :) You will love having a widow, i miss mine dearly. Looking forward to more content about her! Much love from Utah

They do tend to be very calm. My mother once picked a pepper from her garden with a black widow on it, and it didn't bite despite her almost squishing it with her finger. I also put my foot in a shoe with one that I thought was rock until it moved under my foot and again no bite. But to be fair, that might have been because it couldn't. lol

    • @rebel4466
      @rebel4466 Рік тому +12

Can confirm. VERY timid little things. Attention newbies though: Don't play with them anyway. A bite would really suck and you don't get much out of playing with one of them.
It's just not like they blindly attack anything. They prefer not being bothered and use flight over fight in most situations.

My aunt had a Blackwidow that created a blanket of webbing at the entrance of her underground storm shed. Her name was Big Bertha. My aunt would feed big Bertha rats and she was HUGE! Her children surrounded her, but you would always know who Big Bertha was because she would be smack dab in the middle. I would have to say no black widow I have seen has ever come close to her size and I have seen a lot from your typical gravid females to your jeuvanile ones that are getting their adult colors. It was quite amazing and a memory I won't forget! My aunt loved nature and respected everything from the trees in her yard as she would apologize to the plant while pruning to what was caught in the river. I remember wanting to keep this cool rockfish I caught and brought it back. Was told to return it, but it died (not enough oxygen) I was told to give it a funeral and bury it with respect. I did and then she explained her view on reincarnation and how what we become in the next life depends on how we act in this one. I miss her she was an amazing woman! Had her flaws, but I respected her.

I think it's also memories like this that helped me and my sister not develope a fear of arachnids since as children we would hold jumping spiders and daddy long legs. Nature is incredible and things can develope in amazing ways if given the chance not to mention I am sure Genetics for spiders can have their own complexities. I like our western black widow spiders. They are pretty calm. I don't need to buy any and we have a few hundred in our house. They just came in one winter and stayed! They really help keep any pests under control or stop them from making our home theirs! As long as you let them be they will leave you alone! Though they have been known to chase you if you keep harassing them as my eldest son found out, lols. We usually buy them some food for the winter. Outlet (because she commandeered our bathroom outlet) lived for about 3 years before she passed away. I didn't know they live that long til she came around. We had lots of fun watching her grow from a sling to full grown and have babies of her own!
    Wonderful spiders!

A black widow was actually the first spider I caught as a child. She was so big and beautiful in an old cider jug, but she spun a web right in the narrow neck, then laid eggs. The idea of little black widows infesting my bedroom was enough to get that jug outside into the wilderness. A quick open of the bottle, then I ran (I'm still not sure why I thought she'd chase? me).
Now, I've actually lived in a couple places that are literally infested with them & I've gotten blasé. They're very mellow. I know I've almost put my hand on them while moving furniture, but I've never had one bite me or my animals. Still cautious because of the danger, but I've cupped dozens with no trouble other than they're surprisingly fast. I actually have to go through my house for another black widow inspection because there are a few webs I've spotted.
I have four in tanks right now, including one with an egg case I have to fish out. The second one for the season. Not sure it's the right thing, but I usually flush them. The egg cases are a hassle, but are relatively easy to pull out. Long tweezers might help. Mothers are protective of them though, so I usually have to chase her off then cautiously remove from the very strong, hard to break web without dragging mama out on the web too.
Their webbing is awesome, but can be difficult. They tend to build them at the top of the enclosure, which means while opening lids the spider is often on the lid. I no longer keep them in anything but a front-opening Exo-Terra, and even then have to be cautious I don't pull the entire web out when opening the door to feed.
They really are gorgeous and can get huge. A light nearby makes them gleam & it's easier to see their markings (which vary a little from spider to spider). Maybe because I usually find full-grown adults they don't seem to live a really long time but I think I've seen somewhere they're one of those spiders that tends to die after egg laying season. Not sure though since I've had three egg cases this year & the ladies are still healthy looking.

I wondered when you’d get a Black Widow. They are amazing, beautiful spiders. I grew up on a big beautiful farm in East TN, and as far back as I can remember, we could go outside my Parent’s house and find Black Widow’s any time of year. They would always hide in the eves of their home, around the outside of the basement, deck and porch. Also, they loved to live and lay eggs inside bait stations for mice that were placed outside the home. I’ve always wondered if they come in with the brick used to build the home. We’d go outside and look for them, and I’ve seen some grow to be really big. They are not aggressive at all, and never a threat to us in any way. A few years ago, my Mom made an enclosure for an abandoned egg sack, and she placed it inside her bedroom to watch. She enjoyed watching the babies hatch and took care of them. When the babies got big enough, she turned them loose outside. My Mom loved them, but my Dad was not so happy about it. However, he knew better than to argue with her. Other than a few Jumping Spiders that decided to come inside to live over the years, which were always welcomed and named, the Black Widow babies were the only time she had enclosed spiders. I can tell you those baby Black Widows knew my Mom’s voice. They would move around the enclosure to her when she talked to them. It was amazing to watch, and I have many similar stories. Mom was amazing and beautiful as well, and sadly she passed away in her sleep last June and my Dad, which was an amazing beautiful soul as well, passed away 3 years before my Mom, neither were sick, just gone in a blink. My Mom taught my 2 sisters and I to love and respect all creatures. However, spiders were mine and my Mom’s thing. My Mom and I enjoyed observing them and talking about them, as far back as I can remember, and long after I grew up and moved out. The farm was a special place, and just seeing that you got a Black Widow at this time in my grief, makes me smile. My sisters and I, had no other options, and sold the farm last week. It’s been the hardest thing in my life to date. It was the last connection to my parents. I am a very lucky person to have such beautiful memories and loving parents that taught me to see the beauty in all the little things, such as the Black Widow Spiders.

black widows are shy creatures she won't bite she will more likely pull her legs in balling up to protect her self she doesn't have good vision but if you press on her and she feels like the only way to escape the danger is to bite then she will but its a last resort I grew up in a desert and was always very curious so I've handled just about anything that runs, crawls, slithers, and so on was always amazed how strong their webs are with this spider found one with a lizard caught in its web and even seen one frozen solid dropped her and it sounded like a marble hitting the ground a while later she thawed out and still 100 alive pretty amazing!

the Black Widow, I think a good name for her would be Nightshade. if you haven't already picked one out of course! They absolutely terrify me, but everything venomous or poisonous does, but its kinda cool to see how gentle she was compared to like a wolf spider that darts all over the place. It kinda gives off a 'regal' vibe, you know?

When I was really little my grandparents had a house with quite a large covered porch at the front door. A black widow decided to build her web just opposite the front door and my gran did what she always did and instilled a healthy love and respect for the little beauty. She told me that they are venomous so I shouldn’t go anywhere near it but that as long as we didn’t disturb it, it wouldn’t bother us. I don’t know how long that spider lived there but in my child’s mind it was ages. It became almost a pet. We greeted every time we left and came home. I miss my gran. She was an amazing human 🖤💜

Somewhere along the line my arachnophobia was like "alright I'm done here" and took off, because now I think spiders are awesome and (in regards to Maple and Salem) pretty cute sometimes. I was on my back patio and I saw a jumping spider walking towards me, and for a couple minutes we just sat there and observed each other from an arm's length, and then it left. I don't know, it was cool to see how curious and inquisitive it was.
Also real quickly: One time I was skating in Southern California, and I sat down on these benches we were skating and leaned back, cupping my hand around the edge of the bench. My finger grazed a web and so I looked down there, and sure enough there was a good sized black widow with a bright red hourglass and everything, I was tripping out at the time but now it's funny😂

Fun fact about me. I was in New Mexico on a trip to California. I went to open a rest area door, and felt a pinch on my finger. Low and behold, I had accidentally pressed on a Black Widow tucked under the edge of the door handle. And i got bit by her. Instead of freaking out, unaliving her, etc. I let her crawl onto my hand and i moved her to a bush nearby and released her. As for the bite, it was a terrible experience. I was sick, in pain, etc for a good 5 days. I learned 2 things that day. Number 1, check door handles and any hiding spots in black widow territory, and number 2, you do NOT want to be bitten by one, cause it will put you on your backside😂😂 Love the video as always Kat!!

(Which, ofc dont do just because, to anyone else.) I also had her set up in a huge enclosure with a rose as well! She really loved it, and would nestle into the fake petals, very pretty imagery. Thankfully they're not like recluses in that they are very much not zippy.

Yes, be careful of too much moisture. I live in the California central valley & there are HUGE black widows almost everywhere! They tend to avoid where we water regularly & seem to prefer it very dry. There's morning dew in the spring & fall, but the temperatures remain too high during summer, when they're most numerous & active. Also, I saved a wolf spider from being squashed in the jamb of our self-closing garage door. It almost got him & he was in absolute shock so I was able to have a really great photo session before escorting him outside.

Agh, I'm jealous lol. You got a free Carolina. Those are my favorite wolf spiders to keep, but so hard to find online or in the wild for me. Especially, females. Also, I love my Western black widow, Belladonna. I have learned they love to attach webs to the walls and the web silk is very strong (She's my first widow). Personally, I have my girl in a container with the opening at the top so there's little chance of her being near my hands or risk her getting out when opening. Btw, you're more than welcome to name your girl Belladonna as well. Belladonna is a type of nightshade plant and I think it matches their lethal beauty. One more thing, if you feel inclined to name your beautiful Carolina, Eclipse, I would be greatly honored. My first Carolina was named Eclipse and was such an amazing spider. Sadly, I lost her unexpectedly last September. Congrats on your gorgeous new additions.

spent many years in CA. at work a bunch of us hung out back and smoked sitting up against the building til one day a wasp came by and a guy slapped it down at the ground... it hit a black window web we didnt know was there, and this HUGE Window came down to get it, but it broke away and trigger another Widow right next and then another and another. There was 4 HUGE QUARTER sized widows within 6 inches of each other. Western Windows get big.

We have loads of Steatoda sp. in Europe, (especially in the UK, specifically in the south including London), commonly known as false widows and they’re house spiders. Everyone has them in their home.
They’re really close to Latrodectus sp. (Black widows) in behaviour and look. Both are really gentle, docile, actually quite fearful of anything human and will run to hide or freeze. I’ve never seen one attack! Whereas garden spiders and cellar spiders (Pholcus) are more aggressive yet can’t cause harm to humans 😅

Want any lol, I have a crib o' babies on a mama atm. Love the videos & info. Widows are on my list, I am fascinated by them. I have yet to find a spider or arachnid that I cannot find fascination in. I watch this other channel with this dude who goes out and hold spiders etc like black widows. He's shown how they can be very unlikely to bite unless they feel threatened. And shows that a lot of spiders etc that are something you don't want to be bitten by are actually somewhat chill. I'll still be avoiding them cause I'd still get bit just looking at one.
    But it cool to see.

Also, widow fangs are tiny, and unlikely to pierce normal adult skin. They can pierce the skin of elderly and infants, bc it’s thinner.

Name her Betty Lou after Betty Lou Beets.
I work outside. Sometimes I have to put on waders to get in the swamp and when I take them off I ALWAYS have at least one wolf spider on me somewhere just hanging out. I still have a pretty healthy fear of spiders, but in a weird way I feel like I understand them better now that we spend quality time together.
