I love these accents! I dunno why people, Brits in particularly hates them, but as a Norwegian we have X hundred different dialects, maybe even as many as thousands. And even tho we have the standardized version both written and spoken language, it's basically just a more Norwegian form of Danish as we were under Danish rule. It's our dialects that's real Norwegian. Most people think of the generic Posh British accent, but to me this is England. The Essex, Manchester, Liverpool, Welsh etc. Also people tend to forget that English is in fact a Germanic language, just like Norwegian due to the many different Germanic people who invaded, and colonized Britain and intermixed with the already existing Brittonic/Celtic population, that had already undergone X years of Romanization due to Roman colonization.
The ay sounds are tricky. Very easy to start sounding Australian/Cockney when you're new to the accent. The 'th' sound was hardest to correct when I got rid of my accent due to the laziness of the Essex lad tongue.
Usual bloody misunderstanding! Because of t.v programmes like TOWIE, people believe that all of us that come from Essex speak with a mockney estuary accent. Real Essex people, like my family and myself, have a rustic tone similar to the Suffolk and Norfolk accents.
As an English American (Emphasis on American) my first instance of hearing the Essex accent comes from Lewis Brindley of the Yogscast. This is beautiful. I wish I could hear Lewis play the accent up this much.
@Max Pearson Quit your jibber jabber, everyone knows Dagenham and Romford are solid London endz. Anyone not representing this is those podes is lacking.
My boyfriend has a London accent but was born somewhere else in England so he also has an Essex accent too so how would a London Essex accent sound like?
The original Essex accent was quite country but due to white flight from London the accent is now more old East London. I live in Chelmsford and get called a Cockney when up North but only 20 miles up the road and they are still quite Bumkin sounding.
Thats a bastardisation which comes from the influx of E. londoners into Essex Essex is a country accent. It is still heard on the East coast - like Shoebury. It was common 50 years ago. Listen to Suffolk accent (there are Suffolk speakers still) for similar tones.
I can't tell the difference between this and Cockney. Lived in London for 3 years and couldn't tell the difference between a lot of accents apart from MLE which is very distinct and obviously RP.
Just wondering about _ing sounds. I was recently listening to Priti Patel (who I understand is an Essex girl) and she kept dropping the g from gerunds like workin', studyin' etc., and I recall another woman from Essex who would do the same thing. Is this an Essex thing?
Nah mate. Been living in Essex for quite some time now. Sure, London overspill and all that, but you're actually describing cockney more than anything, and tonally slipping towards Aussie along the way. Best way to practise the Essex accent, specifically colchester though, is mimicking Blur's Park Life. :)
I'm really struggling with this client of mine who has Essex accent. I can work with American, British RP, MLE, Cockney, Australian, New Zealand, Russian, French, Canadian, Indian etc. variants of English but I was bowled on the first ball by this Essex accent. Please suggest me some movies or series to watch so that I can work my way forward.
That's a tricky one - it's definitely in draw-r-ing, and in law-r-and-order, and in India-r-and-China. And it also occurs in RP. It's called the 'intrusive R', if you'd like a google. I don't have anything on it yet.
@@MattPocock Ah, yes. The fricative. The great shibboleth that separates a real RP from an American actor faking one. The hard "r" sounds and the heavy emphasis on such "r" sounds is also the highlight of the West Country and Cornish accents, which is the stereotypical pirate voice and origin of things such as "feller" in the US Southern accent due to many originating there (Robert Newton was also cast as both Long John Silver and Blackbeard due to being from Dorset like the literary Silver, plus could sound Bristolian like Blackbeard).
Ah, now what we have here is Estuary English - which has invaded from the west and pushed out the Essex Accent - soundcloud.com/essex-record-office/these-new-fangled-ways-sa-024
Holy dooley, that’s scary My ancestors moved from the UK Essex region for the colonies circa 200 years ago I speak Commonwealth Received Pronunciation; hearing this modern form of Essex English dialect comes across as [ ...uneducated ], I resonate much more with the dialect he changes gear from to annunciate in the contemporary Essex dialect, which is the way my grandfather and great grandfather spoke (and not the Essex pronunciation he demonstrates) Really well done and informative, thank you for sharing
Essex born and bred, often asked if I'm Australian, so there you go!

Made me smile. He's right. I did all my schooling there, at Westlands, during the sixties. Nice to hear the old accent, seeing as I moved away in '71.
Me too... from Harold Hill Essex in the 70s but now living in the USA. His accent sounded right to me.
i agree with other comments, for sure sounds super aussie to me here, but its a very good explanation about ow accent innit
The ay sounds are tricky. Very easy to start sounding Australian/Cockney when you're new to the accent. The 'th' sound was hardest to correct when I got rid of my accent due to the laziness of the Essex lad tongue.
I’m following a youtuber in Essex and love his accent, this guy seems to get it right
i just watched white gold and you sound very much like the actors; thanks for breaking it down for me! :)
health becomes elf...LOL... ;)
He's a million miles of the Essex accent he sounds like a fucking Australian... repping the co4 the original capital of England
Is that the ol' Colch your referencing there.
You ain't far from me. I am in Braintree.

My boyfriend has a London accent but was born somewhere else in England so he also has an Essex accent too so how would a London Essex accent sound like?
Some accurate shit
Instead of hooray, you have HOORAAAAY
I’m from Essex and I do sound bit like this
Very "Estuary".....anywhere south of Chelmsford.
Same I am also from Essex and I problely have one of the most Essex accent in Essex
The original Essex accent was quite country but due to white flight from London the accent is now more old East London. I live in Chelmsford and get called a Cockney when up North but only 20 miles up the road and they are still quite Bumkin sounding.
Interesting! How does essex differ from austrailian?
i started sounding like a cowboy 11 seconds into the video. thanks man
Thats a bastardisation which comes from the influx of E. londoners into Essex Essex is a country accent. It is still heard on the East coast - like Shoebury. It was common 50 years ago. Listen to Suffolk accent (there are Suffolk speakers still) for similar tones.
i didn’t know we sounded like that
In North Carolina you finds hints of this.
How can someone change their accent?
I speak english as a third langage and I don't have any accent , I just speak.
Can someone help me?
We don't all speak like that! (Though a lot do!) 🤣
how posh will this make me on a scale from Thatcher to The Queen?
Is that a linear or logarithmic scale?
Matt Pocock Let's say linear though the lines there seem more exponential
Below Thatcher by miles. Essex accents are seen as "rather common"
I can't tell the difference between this and Cockney. Lived in London for 3 years and couldn't tell the difference between a lot of accents apart from MLE which is very distinct and obviously RP.
I do not sound one bit like this haha not all of us speak like this but i mean its kinda funny 😂
Could this be used in reverse to help me loose my Essex accent?
Just wondering about _ing sounds. I was recently listening to Priti Patel (who I understand is an Essex girl) and she kept dropping the g from gerunds like workin', studyin' etc., and I recall another woman from Essex who would do the same thing. Is this an Essex thing?
Bazinga
As an American you nailed our accent absolutely perfect. Good buddy.
The th sound is SO incredibly hard in the Essex version
Wanted to see if Steve Marriott of Small Faces/Humble Pie was exhibiting an Essex accent and woah Nelly! Yes indeed.
How about the 'ah' sound, ie bag, dad etc?
Interesting
im from essex and milk was fucking spot on mate lol
Being born and bred in Essex, I don't pronounce things like the way you think we do.
Might have to move to essex then.. I can't say "TH" so it comes out as an "F"
God I love your videos💎🙌🏻 I love how you know all those accents
So similar with cockney
Even the O sound
Pretty close!
I’m from essex LMAO this is hilarious
I've been in Essex and if people wanna tell u something that u really need to understand/know they always add "it is" after their sentence.

Essex is one of the English 'Cockney' to create Australian English, then there's South-east London,Sussex,Norwich,Yorkshire,Manchester,Kent, etc
Estruary Cockney created Aussie English

Like that
Very similar to an Aussie accent.
Not bad, almost reminds me of all the people who said 'YOO FINK YOR WEW POSH BUH YOR A WANKA' at school.
Toby is missing out not knowing any gnomes
Super Australian lol
Essex boy in NZ… nobody here think I come from Australia. However!!!! I’ve spent some time in the US and those silly souls thought I was Australian.
I feel personally attacked... I fink.

You don’t drop the L, it’s just lower. If it were dropped completely, milk would become mick
How about that extra R that gets stuck in. Like Drawring or warshing. Gaaah no!
That's a tricky one - it's definitely in draw-r-ing, and in law-r-and-order, and in India-r-and-China. And it also occurs in RP. It's called the 'intrusive R', if you'd like a google. I don't have anything on it yet.
