A Japanese Technique to Overcome Laziness

- Almost all of us periodically sets ourselves a new goal or challenge - and just as often in the end fails to achieve them. We end up telling ourselves that we’re just not ready yet, that we’ll do it next week, next month...next year. We might even pursue them with zeal at the start. But once we’ve made a small amount of effort, we’ll tell ourselves we’ve done enough, and it’s time to take this whole ‘starting a new life’ thing more slowly.
Why does it always turn out like this? The answer’s fairly obvious: Because we try to achieve too much, too fast; because we get sick of the new responsibility; because it’s difficult to change old habits and try something new.

SUMMARY:
- The technique is called Kaizen, or the one-minute principle. Kaizen originated in Japan, and it is something that anyone can attempt in any sphere of their life.
- At the heart of this method is the idea that you should practice doing something for a single minute. Every day at the same time. Just for a minute, no more.
- Challenging programs of self-improvement that deprive you of vast amounts of energy can end up exhausting you, and leave no tangible results.
- The one-minute principle lets you see the progress you’re making. And it’s a critical part of forming new habits! It’s important to overcome that lack of confidence you might have in your abilities, as well as free yourself from guilt and helplessness.
- The moment those feelings inspire you, you will gradually begin to increase the amount of time you spend on the goal that you have set yourself.

#2. Stop Saying I’ll Do It Later
#3. Believe That You Can And Never Give Up
#4: Replace the thought prefix "I will try" with "I will do"
#5: Remember why you want to do the thing in the first place, and if it is enjoyable to you, remember how good the flow state feels.

I am a 15-year-old Vietnamese student. I failed the high school entrance exam even though everyone had thought I d pass and study in a high-qualitied school. The reason for my failing were not because I was lazy or had bad ability, it was caused by my wrong study schedule. I made too high goal everyday which was over my possibility. I tried in vain but I was still patient and hoped that I d get luck. But no. I failed. Everyone all regrets for me now. I gonna study in a private school, practice english more and take the IELTS. I must change because I don't want it happens again!!!💪

I did before, every single day, in the same time. And the results are amazing. The key is discipline.
Wow really I want to try it. Sometimes I set a plan or agenda then I can’t finish. Too many distractions
Maybe we should have a schedule from the moment we get up in the morning. Set an alarm for everything you have to do. I usually finish a task when I don’t look at the time. The clock is a big distraction,. It keeps you going when you don’t chk the time, just the alarm
Agenda. What's that ? ZZZZZZZ

2.Divide the work into small parts.
3.Have a fixed timetable.

I added this to my "Watch later" list... last year.. now I'm finally here after almost a year of procrastination and yet I'm still too lazy to actually watch it.

I've learned that the hardest part about doing anything is just getting started. If you can just get started, you will continue with what needs to be done. Instead of telling yourself you need to go on a run, just put on your running shoes and step outside. The rest will be much easier

This is so similar to what ive been doing to achieve my goals. I have always wanted to work out but everytime i attempt to i get discouraged after about a week or two. So i have started up again and have committed to doing only 30 squats a day. If i want to do more i can but i only commit to 30 squats. Suprising that it seems i always end up doing more but the thought of working out doesnt seem like a chore anymore. Trying to implement that thinking in other areas of my life.
Yes, we just need to start n keep small goals
Another Method I use is.... I take a project that MUST be done and divide it into 5 or 10 SMALL projects. One morning my car had a FLAT TIRE during a winter snow storm. I didn't want to fix it but the car was in front of my house close by. I felt lazy but I divided the BIG job into several tasks. 1 open trunk and get spare tire out... then take a break in house to get warmed up. 2... get the tools I need near the tire....take another break....3. get the jack from trunk and place it under car & another break in house....4. loosen bolts on wheel...another break...5 remove tire and place new tire onto car...take break....6 put everything away and leave for work FINISHED!!! I could not face the BIG job... but I could face 5 or 10 LITTLE jobs. (I am 62) . I always say "When you get old, you have to DO a little... then REST a little."
Nice, thanks for sharing, and 62 these days is not old at all =P
too many breaks
Or you could break it into small jobs like this.
1. Change tyre.
2. Enjoy.
sweet idea. Ill medicated during my break
This reminds me of my grandpa, he used to do a lot if his tasks like this.
It's not failing to finish, it's failing to start.
I Am Bejo It's like in physics,
where an object at rest tends to stay at rest.
overcoming your inertia is hardest part, but once i've started I feel like i'm a train with no brakes
In some cases, it's failing to finish, too. But this doesn't have to do with "laziness", but doubt.
The first step is always the hardest. ☺
Sup,fellow Nepali?You're Nepalese right?lol.
UA-cam took 3 years to recommend this video even a youtube is kinda procrastinator
I also discovered this technique by accident. I started jogging every afternoon but decided I would go only a very short distance and go further only if and when I felt like it. Needless to say, I felt like it often enough and started feeling better.. and the rest is history.
The logic behind this is:
You need to start something in order to finish it.
Instead of wasting hours stressing yourself out, you are better off doing just 1 minute of that given task.
Agree
Yes, you are surely wise, sensei. I agree fully!
Kain Bastien it's sort of like repetition like how as children we learn how to use the toilet or ride a bike i learned to speak Spanish by repeating the words over and over in my head

Don't tell that to me, that lazyness could be clever, 😂
Yeah, I used this method a few years ago when I started walking (outside, not on some lame treadmill) one block a day. After that got too easy I added another block, etc., etc., etc., And, before I knew it I was walking two miles a day! Btw-I didn’t change my eating habits at all, but in about 3 months time I had lost 30 pounds! So...start small...baby steps...and go with what your body tells you!! If I did it, trust me-so can you!!!!
Good for you!
Heidi Haaland Thank you!😊

"KAIZEN", I FOUND THIS CONCEPT TO BE VERY EFFECTIVE.! THANKS!
I assigned this to my class for 2019-2020 out of 175 students 12 completed this assignment. They found it very helpful. The other students felt that 1 minute was too long and not worth the effort. They did not see the value in even attempting to try something such as this as it was another example of teachers,"doing to much."

Japan has a technique to overcome laziness, me: Japan is so advanced!
I red the book "the compound effect" and the book aperently describes kaizen cause the book recomends exacly that ! puting a little affort in something but for a long period of time is more valuble than overworking on something for a week and than quiting thats how habits are born.I started to learn japanese for like 10 min a day and I could read katakana/hiragana after a month it was amazing!!
Great !! Now I can diet for 60 seconds
lol

You could probably think and analyze why you want/need to diet, for 60 sec every day, may be even write it down for a minute....it could produce some results..)) good luck!
Ha ha my mom diet for breakfast snd thats all. Drive me nuts!!!!!

This is exactly why I draw a small drawing everyday and took on the 365 day drawing challenge. A small sketch can take such little time. It's really helpful and I've been improving on my art ever since
You heard about Richard Feynman? He drew with his artist friend every Sunday and after 7 years he became a good artist.

Thank you!! That's kind of you to say!
Madelyn Janelle Art That's Awesome! Your artwork is pretty Splendid! 😊
Even a small drawing tend to draw me out pretty fast; well it depends on what kind of drawing. If it's something I can see and I copy it with pen and paper, I have no problem with that. Drawing something straight from my mind... That's a different beast.

Make the world a better place for others. Every day, take a minute to think up how to make the world a better place, and write it down. Simply thinking about ways to solve, eliminate, or cope with our human problems helps improve our individual values; this new awareness is connecting us more strongly to the collective conscience grid.
Truthful education, open-mindedness, and decisive action based on long term goals along with a bounty of food and water are all the ingredients that a blissful global society would need. Once individualism is dethroned from the human perspective we can co-exist more peacefully within the confines of the planet. Realizing that our most important needs can be taken care of if we all work together towards common goals. Only then will we be able to progress to a higher level global civilization.
Imagine an entire planet where all the human basic needs are being taken care of and the children grow up healthy and not psychologically damaged. Those children achieve great things in their lives and educate themselves and their children, humanity has so much potential if we can simply work together instead of against each other. Instead of having to come up with vaccines and cures for various symptoms, we could eliminate the the problem all-together and devote our attention to higher technology for space exploration. We cannot explore outer space until we explore our inner space.
We are just vibrating sources of creativity, that is all we are. Humans that is. What we think about is what our frequency is and it is what we attract. Imagine being on the same frequency with the entire population on the planet. Right now we are noise, but together we can change the frequency and wavelength of our collective intent in this realm that we call reality. Understanding that the only limits as a species are the ones we impose on ourselves. What would happen if money was not the motivation we used to convince others to do work. What if the motivation came from within and money was no object. We can use technology to make our lives extremely easy, manual labor does not have to exist. We can computerize everything, program it all because we are that smart when we put our minds to it. Using renewable energy and non-renewable elements we can create a global infrastructure that does not interfere with the climate or weather. We populate the correct zones and terraform deserts into rain-forests. We control ourselves for sustainable population (it boggles me how we still have not figured that one out yet). We develop compassion for each other as individuals and grow the collective knowledge.
Ok, that was a bit more than a minute but I like that thought.
Very underrated comment. It even took less than a minute to read!
But...Bruce Lee said, Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do...
IronButterfly1023 I agree. Knowing is not enough. But without knowing we cannot successfully do. Without the will to do and the courage to act, all the knowledge is for naught.
45 years your senior I was there in your place once. But trust me. Life has so much more in store for you if only you have a positive outlook. Wishing you great and happy life.
"Never report to tomorrow something you can do the same day"
Sensei Wu in lego ninjago.
I'm gonna mow my yard one minute a day until its done...I like this method. 💯
I hope you succeeded
what most people here aren't understanding, and that's surely because they didn't watch the whole video, is that this is not about doing the same thing every single day during 1 minute. It is like this: 1 minute today, 1 minute tomorrow, 1 minute the day after tomorrow, then in the next day 2 minutes, then other 2, then 5, then 15, then 30, then 60, then 120... This technique is pretty simple and I've been using it my whole life without knowing it. I started with my walking exercises, I used to walk some 10 minutes, then 15 minutes, then 30, then running... The main problem is that other people and the world around us are always rushing us to perform a lot of tasks and to perform them with high efficiency. So from time to time we have to stop and think about our lives meditating.
Leon Parker the problem I saw was doing it at the same time or even same spot in your routine. Cause what ADHDer really has a self motivated routine? If they do have any routine it's because they are in the military or school or something similar.
Even then 1 min can be an eternity, think cool down on a video game, or at the dentist.
I posted earlier how certain chemicals in our brains are deficit in ADHDers brains. Specifically ones related time management and reward.
Leon Parker it trains your sub conscious mind an develops a new habit
Leon Parker I agree sir. I haven't always used this technique, but I heard about it elsewhere. Great technique. I think too, it's good to use it to declutter your schedule: Reduce the time, at least for me, reading news; reduce the time watching videos on UA-cam; etc., therefore we can increase the time focusing on our goal. I will use this in learning a language. I am so assiduous in study, it can be too much, and I end up not happy.
Leon Parker
Thank You for explaining it better
This won’t work, and yes I have tried it.
I’ve been doing stretching exercise for about 2 months everyday for 10-15 minutes, and still it’s unbearable, it hasn’t became noticeably more bearable or more enjoyable than before starting it.
Do I get joy from “improving” myself? Answer is: very very little, absolutely not worth fighting for it.
This probably only can work for physical activity that increases heart beat rate, for example: simple running ,because your body get used to it, not your mind.
So overall this is bulls*it, If you hate doing hate doing something, you will always do no matter how you do it, it won’t became enjoyable or noticeably more bearable, or it will take very long time at least a year.
And now I would like to hear someone disagree with me, and have their story.
Any multi-talented people here.... watching the video and reading the comments in the same time ?🌸💫🎶

I'm a Japanese in Tokyo, not like the Chinese woman in the thumbnail :D 改善 KAIZEN is not a special word, we use it in our everyday conversation. "KAI" means "change", but "ZEN" means just "good" So, KAIZEN means simply "make it better" "change it better" and has nothing to do with the 1 minutes theory, basically... but we're told to keep trying everyday constantly to achieve goals. (Well, I'm such a lazy person tho! :D XD )
:D Japan is sooo cool and i'm going to visit next year and i'm sooooooooo exited! :3

Before I was so very lazy it comes to the point that I don't want to do anything, and then suddenly I realize that I haven't done anything I really like to do, so since I have experience that nonsense matter I try to make things step by step slowly so the result was I was doing little things for everyday and I achieve them by the time goes by...

I started learning French for five minutes a day using this principle, and today I have been successful in continuouly learning for 568 days (learning streak). This is a miracle I never expected

Louise - this reminds me of my husband, he say's "do something, even if it's
wrong". Now, realize, he's not meaning do wrong things. I have trouble prioritiziing, and so I can't decide what to start with, eventually ending up doing nothing. So he say's, "do something even if it's wrong"...LOL
He also uses your idea. When we want to do something together, he lets me know that it doesn't have to be some grand vacation, he say's "we should do something just a little bit above nothing"...
Just wanted you to know, enjoyed your comment
Louise Keith Abbott a view for a view
How we can do kaizan
Roaring. That was so funny and TRUE.
Lol. That means you have the wisdom to think of something great :)
I have a rule that says:
"If it can be done in two minutes, do it right now."
It's useful when I look at a sink full of dishes. I might rinse dishes for two minutes, and pile them up, with the intention of putting them in the dishwasher later. Sometimes I get distracted and work more, but as long as I did it for two minutes, I'm satisfied enough not to feel guilty walking away from the chore.
Pile of clean clothes to fold/hang? Work on two minutes of individual items. Don't want to match socks all day? How about matching 3 pairs.
Over time, it's true... you just get used to doing the activity, and the time flows away more readily.
Another thing I do is to limit the things I enjoy. Mainly to keep me from spending too much time doing something I love to do. If I want to play a first person shooter, and I know I get wrapped up in the games, I'm not allowed to play more than the time allotted. Maybe I only have an hour, but if the alarm goes off, and I'm having a bad game, I walk away and accept that I lost that hour. Maybe I want to enjoy some youtube vids, but I only have 30 minutes, simply respect the timer. :-)
Just another suggestion.
Jeremy Johnson a working strategy but depressing and torturous instead of enjoyable
Jeremy Johnson smart idea man .
That leads to horrible livelocks though.

"I want to draw picture a day!"
*draws one line*
"Oh no, time's up"
according to this vid you set your goal to high (lol) :D
Do it.
In life drawing classes, you have 10, 20 & 30 second gesture drawings to help loosen you up and get your hand moving efficiently. You'd be surprised how much of a figure you can capture and record in one minute.
So tomorrow, set up something easy and draw it for one minute a day for the next two weeks. Save the drawings and see how much you've improved at getting the picture down on paper quickly.

"Every day at the same time" is already a problem for people with irregular schedules.
Piss off, negative Nellie!
And remember to come back whining, at the same time, every day!
I see that stiffyrabbit has chosen to troll for a minute each day. Well, done! :D
'do anything for 1 minute' is already a problem to me
cry me a river
Josh Fox Oh please, one minute is legit nothing
ND G sure, and if that's one minute after you wake up, or when you get home from work, that's doable, and could probably still form a habit. If it has to be at the same time every day, though, it might not be an option for people with, say, a rotating work schedule. If you work mornings, evenings, and nights, on different day's, a specific time isn't nessessarily realistic.
I'll wake up early for a minute and then go back to sleep! XD
Richa Khaneja eventually you'll wake up early for 5 minutes! Gambatte!
Richa Khaneja We r truly Indians... 😂👌
IF YOU DO THAT FOR A WEEK I BET ALL MY MONEY YOU WONT FALL ASLEEP THE NEXT MOMENT YOU WAKE UP.
Richa Khaneja haha
YD
That's how I started becoming a UA-cam watcher: only a couple of minutes a day. Now I'm off UA-cam only a couple of minutes a day. So yeah, I can CERTIFY it. THIS METHOD IS EFFECTIVE!!
I’m going to try this technique! Thank you for sharing :-)

I lost 36 pounds just forcing my self to get out of the bed and walk outside for 1 minute. Slowly I started enjoying the birds , the sunrise , fog , put extra jacket but get out for one minute same time.. I did it for 6 months I my walk became 4 miles long .. I felt better .. I lost weight withought any effort about it.. I felt more active all day my feet’s got stronger.. I was energetic.. I forgot about it when I moved to different state.. now I will start doing again.. I am glad I watched this video again
studying 1 minute each day
*NICE*
Geno ohh genius
What happens when we get tired of playing video games and start studying 15 hours o.o
I have also a problem with studying and I'm gonna try with 15 or 30 minutes because yea... 1 minute studying really makes no sence 😅
it will be still more than I do normally
Actually, it could work in a way. Not regular academics, but if you want to learn a foreign language. Studying a foreign language for 1 min each day may be enough to learn ONE word. If you can learn ONE new word a day in 30 years you will learn over 10,000 foreign language words.
*It works!!* 1 minute of me sitting in front of the computer, *NOW IT'S AN HABIT*
Pay2Weed Same! Now it changed into hours of my day.
I've taken my one minute to tell you that it should be 'a habit'.
i'll take my one minute to tell you this, the potato:
with habit yes but you can actually use "an" or "a"...in fact it can be used in front of many h words and often depends on tone, pronunciation, dialect. think "an hour" or "an historic event"...in US though, it's mostly used before an unpronounced "h" like "herb" but it's not a strict rule.
I know as much as pronouncing something like university is "a university" because it should sound yuni-verse.. I never heard anyone says "an 'abit", or "an 'istoric event" but I'm absolutely sure agree with "an 'our". This is new to me. I'll have a read about this later.
i had this in my watch later playlist for almost 2 years, trust me no Japanese technique will be overcoming my laziness anytime soon
I did this for duolingo to learn Japanese. I told myself at least one lesson per day every day. I've actually made it to 370 day streak and was inspired to take a real japn1a class. Someday I do 5 lessons. It's pretty crazy looking back on it
That is not what Kaizen means...Kaizen means improvement. So whenever you do project, you reflect and think about what you can fix in order to make it even better
Vmonster Army here 💖
Hi Vmonster,
You are right!
- KaizenMaster
I do this everyday
Vmonster so, where is that one minute technique come from?
how do you study in 1 minute? 😂
1 minute a day, so you should look at your notes everyday, even when you don't have any exam. Then, when you repeat it before the exam it's easier to remember, because you've already studied it.
Skeppy32 I've been staring at my notes everyday 😂😂 1 min wont be enuf to study lol.
I think this is more about planting the idea of studying into your head without negative connotations such as 'I can't do this, no matter how much I study'. In this case you can easily achieve success by studying for a minute. After a while it will become a habit and you would even want to study ^^ sadly I found this out now after I finished school haha. Anyway I think this works better with like internal conflicts or trying to be a better person by telling yourself things every day.
How about studying whatever you can for one minute and whatever it was that you've just studied, let it resonate in your head and then reflect on it afterwards. Like obtaining new information slowly as you go. I mean I know it might take a while but, You know what's best for you, just don't overwork yourself
J Nell and she
Thank you, Its just what I need.
Thank you! 🙏
I will try it! 😊
I was to lazy to finish video, I will finish watching tomorrow.
John Michael one minute every day you will achieve it.
i was too lazy for the unnecessary intro. just teach
That's not laziness, that's your attention span.
Umm generally unless it is a medical thing, a short attention span is a sign of laziness/giving-up easily.
Jeff Barrett so my statement was acceptable right?
fyi, it starts at 3.49
That's a nice technique! I'll try it tomorrow.
Downloaded this video from last 6 month now watch it today ..hope wil complete today
I was almost too lazy to watch the video
Jordono da Vinci same with me
Jordono da Vinci me tooo!
Micro-habits basically. Like saying you'll do ten push ups every day. You end up doing a lot more if you don't make it a big deal in your mind and blocking off time. Duolingo, the language app, does it too. Five minutes per lesson. I have a 215 day streak, so it worked on me! It's a great skill. I have chronic pain and fatigue, so a lot of times I'm uncomfortable or in pain and some things are just too much, but this kind of thing opens a lot of doors. I don't have to clean the whole kitchen right now. I just need to clean the countertop. Yeah, I can do that. Well, I guess I can take out the garbage. And, well, I could do those dishes really quickly. It has helped quite a bit. Turn those mountains back into molehills, and they're a lot more achievable!
Chronically Curious a view for a view
Chronically Curious chronic pain nor good. What do eat?
Chronically Curious thank you
Chronically Curious
Which language are you learning on duolingo
