Before lots of people ask: Yes indeed Lloyd and I did film the Q&A session - Many of you will recall that before FightCamp we asked for your questions and answered the ones that jumped out at us. This will be going up on both Lindybeige and this channel in due course, it has simply been delayed by issues with transferring the huge video files over.
Matt love your video's! I actually just watched your iaido video and was wondering when you were going to make a follow-up vid on that. I found it to be very interesting. Would also like to hear more about the European equivalent to such techniques. Thanks keep up the good work
I love that I can see myself being abused in the background at 1:31 in a video with both Matt Easton AND Lloyd. I'd be starstruck if I wasn't busy being sabre-struck.
Haha, what sort of person 'dislikes' a video like this? It honestly makes me laugh a lot. I completely understand people disliking a video where I state an opinion about something or where I say something wrong. Or where there is a 'thing' to disagree with or dislike. But an interview with Lloyd in a field? I guess if you dislike that then you probably dislike trees, air, fruit and life itself. Probably if you dislike this video (or life in general) then you should not click on my videos to give me extra ad revenue and views ;-)
There's a certain margin of dislikes on videos that might as well not count, since they are there no matter the video, no matter how early it was uploaded, no matter how long it is, and no matter how popular the youtuber. It's kind of like how sand can end up in clothes that you don't remember bringing to the beach. I have trouble believing that they were even consciously put there.
It does appear to be a phenomenon that, though always there, has grown over the past year or so. Sure most videos seemed to have a 'dislike' or two but now even the most innocuous seem to get eight before they've even started.
I'm fairly sure that some people are butthurt because I blocked them for being idiots, so just hang around to click dislike on everything because they have nothing else to do :-D
MY ILLUSIONS NOOOOOO You're the kind of person that kicks in the door of a kindergarten class and yells "Hey kids I know something about Santa you'll never believe!" aren't you?
Close is a relative term. While the both live in England, Matt lives south of London, and Lloyd lives a fair bit north of London as I understand it. So no, in relative terms, they live quite a distance from one another.
The twat with the spear is likely to be trained too or at least understand how to use it's reach to their advantage. One hit "kill" rules probably help to some degree too. That being said I'd definitely put money on a spearman vs two swordsmen.
A spear is a great and fearsome weapon, allthough most of its devastation in modern Hema is due to the one hit kill rule. A spear is very nimble and if you only have to touch your opponent, you will win 90% because of that plus your superior reach.
It is not without reason the Kings Mirror (Norwegian 13th century manual of warfare) states that on the battlefield a spear is worth two swords. You want lots of guys with spears and a few guys with shorter weapons to protect them. In the 13th century that meant shields. Later we see pike blocks with specialist halberds/greatswords to kill anyone breaking into the formation. It is not until effecrtive firearms spears lost its place as the ultimate battlefield weapon.
I love the little crossovers. It's like a youtube cinematic universe. Matt is in videos with Lloyd who's in video's with Bloke on the Range who got drunk and did a Q&A with Ian McCollum who always works with Karl Karsada who tested armor with Dugan Ashley. It's like when I realized Howard the Duck and the Punisher both exist in the same movie canon.
I knew Lloyd was tall but he's almost a head taller than you Matt! I remember seeing fan art of you Skall and Lindy side by side with Skall being the tallest and Lindy the shortest. Oh the irony.
When Lindybeige talked about how he kept three opponents busy to let the rest of his team fight, I realised that he was essentially the "tank" of his team, which makes a lot of sense given some of his other interests.
I believe there are some vids of the melee tournament somewhere, but I don't have hold of them at the moment. The regular tournaments will be going up soon hopefully (they just take ages to edit!).
I just wanted to say that as a faithful viewer of both channels, I demand a video of Matt and Lloyd sparring. All the fan fare, all the edits, all the excellent acting skill. I'm telling you, we NEED this.
Batman and Robin? Bonnie and Clyde? Abbot and Costello? Beavis and Butthead? White and Rice? Katana and Wakizashi? Creed and Kell? Cain and Jurgen? Blackadder and Baldrick? Thing 1 and Thing 2?
Hey, if it was meant to be a rhetorical question, it needed to read "CAN you name a more iconic duo?" Besides, can YOU name a more iconic duo? [\sinc.] Edit: Or, maybe I wanna be the very best, like Ash and Pikachu.
In a world where mudslinging is increasingly the norm, it's really nice to see the principals of two youtube channels having an obviously genuine friendly chat. Not that I ever thought either was a mudslinger - but I'm sure you know what I mean!
Such a good point about the importance of skirmishing vs fencing in group combat. I read once that during Napoleon's Egypt campaign the Mamluk cavalry were surperior to the French in fighting skill horsemanship and armament. One on one or two on two or even two on three, the Mamluks were unbeatable. But, whenever the numbers were large enough to allow for tactical maneuvering, the French cavalry were unbeatable as the Mamluks were completely untrained in using tactics as a group.
Interesting points about individual skills as a fencer vs training to work as a team. One of the bits that I like in Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories (Chronicles) is the references to drill and training of warbands to fight as a unit. Most movies and TV shows either overlook warrior training or only show training of individual fighting skills and not training to fight as a group.
You should do a video broadcasting this 'Melee Tournament' with 5-a-side fight offs so we can watch it. I, in particular, live in Brazil and here we don't have anything like this so I would be glad to see it.
As someone who does both, it's hilarious to see how much HEMA is taking from SCA and other reenact groups, and the other way around. Hilarious and awesome.
I remember that the first video I saw of Lindybeige was his "point about spears", and I think the first I saw of Matt was a video of about spears... Even though it might not be where Matt has his biggest interest, I would really like to see more videos on spears, shields and perhaps axes/swords used together. The subject I find is fascinating because those weapons are perhaps the oldest setups, but it is nearly always the swords alone that gets all the attention.
What Lloyd says (and then Matt agrees with) carries over to multiplayer shooters I've gotten good at: you can get a degree of awareness where you're like a hawk surveying the battlefield. You can second-guess almost everything; it matters less whether you have the fastest reactions and best aim. And I'm pretty sure this carries over to physical sports like football and basketball.
I loved this conversation. I thought the discussion about spears was great, and would love for you guys to unpack that some more. I think we lose sight at how important spears were in battles back in the day.
"5 expert skirmishers beat 5 expert fencers." Probably. "Angles beat shots" is a gun-fighting maxim. The person who has an easier shot to make has the advantage even if they are a poorer marksman. That's why teamwork, flanking, suppression, cover, etc are all so important. None of them have anything to do with how fast or accurate you shoot.
Hmm Lloyd's armour malfunction has given me some ideas. Perhaps padded cloth chaps (same material as the gamberson) held in place by thick elastic/velcro or the reverse side could be several layers of basketball jersey mesh. That way they are breathable and offer better protection.
After that, they should give one of them a Bren gun, and the other a Spandau, and let them have at it. Finally put that one to rest. No ammunition, though, that wouldn't be sporting. Just make them use them as clubs.
Done my fair share of hitting people with soft weapons, and from that experience I agree 110% on what Lindy and Matt discuss here. Especially the skirmishing part. Being aware of your surroundings is extremely important, even more so than just being a skilled fencer. Even a single guy behind the enemy lines can be a huge game changer, if they know what they do.
With live steel rapier discipline, doubles are quite common. However in stage combat reenactment, blades are more rigid, plus it's choreographed and predetermined to not puncture your Swordplay partner's vitals.
I love it! You can just tell that Lloyd is a brilliant tactician, even if Matt is the master fencer. I think of two generals, both with their strengths, discussing battlefield tactics :)
The preponderance of doubles is one of George Silver's famous complaints about the rapier too. Excluding daggers and firearms, which are an almost guaranteed mutual bloodbath, the rapier does seem to be the riskiest historical weapon to use. Of course, it's even worse if you have to fight against a rapier with a shorter weapon yourself.
That sounds like so much fun! I totally agree with the fencers having tunnel vision. We get the occasional fighter with a fencing background in my larp group. They can be terrifying when facing off one on one, but if you're willing to sacrifice yourself when in battle, you can get their attention while your buddy sneaks up and stabs them in the back.
9:08 That's a very good and an eye opening point: a group battle is much more than a bunch of duels happening at the same time. I mean, it should be obvious but it's not, probably because it's practiced lot less, which I guess is because one vs. two is not very fun for the one.
Is there anything out there what do battles with a mass amount of people but its totally made up but historically accurate to a time period? Sorry if that's a silly question but I would love to know. Thanks.
A team of five with Lloyd as the strategist and velite, Matt, Nick and Roland as versatile main fencers/principes (but what fencers!) and Thegn as the "berserk"/triari would be pretty much unstoppable.
A fully armored man with a sharp giant sword swinging it around like a dancer of death would be shocking too see , I am just saying this because that's definitely Lindy Beige's future battle role. Mad man with a great sword chopping everyone's ankles off and disrupting the spear men's good times with tactical awareness.
Hey, mr. Easton, could you make a video about the Briquet? I've always read how soldiers used to complain about having to carry it to battle, but I think that is mostly about the fact they already had bayonets to defend themselves in melee combat, so they ended up rarely using them, but how bad can it really be as a melee weapon? I've always had that question in my mind.
There is a reason why, historically speaking, a spear is a primary weapon and a sword is a back-up, sidearm thing. Before firearms really came into their own, battlefields were dominated by pikemen.
But... grabbing the enemy blade happened quite frequently in historical duels, so... is it only a strike that tags you out, or can I go longsword (in one hand) and grab the enemy? I dunno, this seems like there are plenty of practical moves removed in this tournament environment.
I'm a former reenactor with no knowledge of HEMA. Could some clarify what is meant by "not pulling your blows"? Some of the fighters in the background were in t-shirts. How does HEMA avoid injuries if nobody pulls their blows? One of the first things in reenactment I learned was to pull my blows by controlling the blade before impact. Do HEMA fighters only use metal weapons while wearing full gear?
Never forget all those poor medieval soldiers who died horribly from stepping into lava.
Lets have a minute of silence for them 😖.
No one simple walk through mordor
Why is his gambeson not beige?
Lloyd did try to get as close to beige as he could, I believe. I think he plans to stain it with tea or something!
A brit with a tea stained gambeson, sounds historically accurate to me!
To get one's tea stained gambeson truly historically accurate, one must remember to include the biscuit crumbs.
Lindywhite?
But yea, tea stained Gambeson sounds properly British
With f.lux on on my computer, it looks beige to me!
Before lots of people ask: Yes indeed Lloyd and I did film the Q&A session - Many of you will recall that before FightCamp we asked for your questions and answered the ones that jumped out at us. this is an epic crossover !!! I'm aroused Sir.
just missing the cherry on the top, The Muppetron

scholagladiatoria
LindyMatt!
Love it!
Man, I really need to visit Fight Camp :P
So is he Nik or Lloyd?
Or Nik Lloyd/Lindybeige?
How can one man picking a name and sticking with it be so dashed difficult? hahaha
I love that I can see myself being abused in the background at 1:31 in a video with both Matt Easton AND Lloyd. I'd be starstruck if I wasn't busy being sabre-struck.
I'd just be happy to be there, alas, i don't have the opportunity.
Mr. Shutendoji has learned the first skill of how not to be seen: Don't stand up.
Haha, what sort of person 'dislikes' a video like this? It honestly makes me laugh a lot. Haters being haters. That's it.
Wait, you mean his full legal name isn't actually Lloyd Lindy Beige? My illusions have been shattered.
John La Duke wasn't it a clue that his website (famous for the vegan Nazi controversy) is called 'Lloydian Aspects' (or similar)?
...and if I imagine his full name to be Lloyd Lindy Beige, that would still make perfect sense, because he's still called Lloyd.
His name is actually Nikolas (first name) Lloyd (family name).
MY ILLUSIONS NOOOOOO
You're the kind of person that kicks in the door of a kindergarten class and yells "Hey kids I know something about Santa you'll never believe!" aren't you?
I am. :-D
Well this is a crossover that I've been hoping to see.
They actually live relatively close to each other from what I understand, it's surprising they haven't done more videos together.
Close is a relative term. While the both live in England, Matt lives south of London, and Lloyd lives a fair bit north of London as I understand it. So no, in relative terms, they live quite a distance from one another.
As I understand it, it's only about 3 hours by train. That is relatively close.
No
@@SrgGoofy thats a long trip here.
I always forget how tall Lloyd is
Very disappointing. I was so looking forward to hearing something about THEGREATCOURSESPLUS.
The great courses plus: if it exists, we sponsor it.
but more of that later
Now I suppose I should say a word about our sponsor but more on them later.
Moron that later.
Calling him Lindy is kinda respectless...you all ought to call him Mr. Beige untill he offers first name basis.
Severin1111 maybe they already crossed that line...
Oddly enough, I always thought of Lloyd as relatively short and Matt as tall.... seeing them next to each other, that seems to be wrong.
Hatman39 lloyd is a lanky git. Love him mind.
I'm 6'1, Lloyd is about 6'4
That explains why he doesn't mind losing a few inches of sword length.
If the uk keep with the bannings and you move, will you use metric in your new country?
It is Skallagrim who is the hobbit by all accounts, despite the impression given from a particular bit of fan art...
I thought the first rule of Fight Camp is you don't talk about Fight Camp ?
That's the second rule.
No the first rule of Fight Camp is to tell EVERYONE about Fight Camp. Boots on the ground and all that.
The first rule of Fight Camp is to End Him Rightly.
its called 'Tactics' skill according to Mount&Blade ;)
Phantom Apprentice and acording to Lloyd in one of his old rpg videos. :P
Phantom Apprentice naaaaaaaa, that just let's you put more soldiers on the field than normal.
I still find it fascinating that despite all the training and skills with a sword, some twat with a spear has the advantage.
Reach and flexibility, hard to beat.
The twat with the spear is likely to be trained too or at least understand how to use it's reach to their advantage. One hit "kill" rules probably help to some degree too. That being said I'd definitely put money on a spearman vs two swordsmen.

I think One hit knock out makes it more in the spears favour, whereas if it was actually killing each other, its more difficult with a spear
I love the little crossovers. It's like a youtube cinematic universe. Matt is in videos with Lloyd who's in video's with Bloke on the Range who got drunk and did a Q&A with Ian McCollum who always works with Karl Karsada who tested armor with Dugan Ashley.

Lloyd used to be an adventurer, as well. Then he took a sword to the knee.
Ah, the beginnings of the UA-cam HEMA Universe - now we just need Skall, Shad and so on to turn up.
If you can get shad out of his basement to get any hands on experience at all, that is...
I can't stand those two for some reason.
Metatron, Shadiversity, Skallagrim, Scholagladiatoria, Medieval Review & Lindybeige. I want them to do a video!
Shad has no freaking clue what he's talking about. Buffoon.
Why all the hate for Shad? He seems like a decent guy
clearly not Lindybeige, his clothing wasn't beige
TheSpHornet Some say he's 6ft 4, all we know is he isn't Lindybeige, but Lindybeige's fight Camp cousin, LindyWhite
Matt probably had the auto white balance on his camera turned on, and it mistakenly color-corrected Lloyd's sparring jacket from off-white to white. 😜
TheSpHornet He's undercover!
He said that he got the white gambeson because it will turn beige over time - "thinking long term!"
Lloyd REALLY suits that getup, it may not be beige but he looks like he's in his element

I remember seeing fan art of you Skall and Lindy side by side with Skall being the tallest and Lindy the shortest. Oh the irony.

I envy you guys so much! I wish there was this kind of thing around where I live =/
But... grabbing the enemy blade happened quite frequently in historical duels, so... is it only a strike that tags you out, or can I go longsword (in one hand) and grab the enemy? I dunno, this seems like there are plenty of practical moves removed in this tournament environment.
I'm a former reenactor with no knowledge of HEMA. Could some clarify what is meant by "not pulling your blows"? Some of the fighters in the background were in t-shirts. How does HEMA avoid injuries if nobody pulls their blows? One of the first things in reenactment I learned was to pull my blows by controlling the blade before impact. Do HEMA fighters only use metal weapons while wearing full gear?
This was awesome!
I hope I'm not the only one, but I don't recognize the guard on the sword that Lloyd is holding. Anyone else ?
It's a Messer
Ah, good memories!
