Use minimum force, stay with the enemy, know your ideal range.
Fist-fight, sword duel, or a whole front of a modern war, some ideas can be applied across the board.

If a principle is sound, then it is probably applicable in more than one situation. Here I discuss three principles that I consider to be widely applicable in conflict: use the minimum force necessary to do the job; stay in contact with the enemy; know your ideal range and stick to it.

1) Don't grip it too tightly
2) Make lots of contact
3) Be aware of length
Without the context, it sounds so wrong ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Thank you for explaining the joke to us.
Anytime me brother. You know how much I love a good old in-out joke, real savage.
Are we speaking here of the amour? Because if so, those points all apply perfectly.

scruffy da real OG hmmyep
Oh. You liked that? Try "Fight Club" sometime.
Also, he lost
and won
who won do you think ?
My master taught me 3 similar rules for any fight;
1) Gather your chi energy.
2) Prepare your mind.
3) Run away and leave your loved ones behind.
The best rule of street fighting is, don't. Remember your tongue is your first line of defence. If that works you've saved energy. If it doesn't then run. If you've managed to baffle your possible opponent you'll get a headstart.
Thank u
You forgot 2.5, launch a Kamayamaya wave, find out it's fictional and won't work, then Goto 3
@LostElectron nigerundayo
@Dr. Caustic I mean yeah but it's fun
Summary:
1) Use as much or as little energy as needed
2) Stay in contact with the enemy
3) Get into your ideal range, and try to keep your enemy out of theirs
1) get suplexed while trying wimpy takedown
2) get punched in the face while doing wing chun
3) be a fish that tries to flop back to the water

Tristin Roberts art of war is a tad longer
The thing is, you aren’t wrong, because every single situation he speaks of in this video can be extrapolated to a greater conflict. He is speaking about physical fighting but each fight and action he’s speaking about can also be thought of as arguments or tactics in an argument or military maneuver. Lindy continues to impress me.

We need a movie with only sound effects done by Lindybeige.

The hero of the story confronts the big baddy and draws his sword "WAAASHIIING"
I begin my original song: "Tank", with a tiny electric piano intro, followed by a slow drawing of my katana from its scabbard. It's very effective for setting a mood.
I would propose three different general principles of combat:
1) Conserve energy. (Physical combat is exhausting. Your "use minimum force" can overlap with this.)
2) Stay calm. (Contrary to the myth of "desperate people fight better," deliberate actions usually trump blind rage or terror.)
3) Anticipate. (This is the greatest asset of experience. And I'm not really talking about intuition; essentially, anticipation is an ad hoc exercise in calculating probabilities.)
One more...don't be afraid of death.
1. Take the initiative
2. Retain the initiative

My rules of combat are
1) Don't get killed
2) Don't get injured

2. hopehedosent follow

Good manners got me out of so many situations that could have ended in fights. And even when it ended in fights anyway, it incited people to join on my side. Truly the most underrated technique :)
Do you think these could be applied to verbal conflicts too? Minimal force: if you can effortlessly deal with what people say to you, without bellowing at them, you are the more mature person. Stay in contact: slightly less applicable but if you are debating with someone and respond to their arguments rather than dancing round the topics then you will be more effective. Know your ideal range: don't get too personal, don't drop needlessly into ad hominems. Good laws for debates too it seems.
Minimal force: don't present all your arguments at once. Stay in contact: listen to your opponents arguments. Know your ideal range: argue based on things you know.
Hamish Woodland well debates are fights. but moving around the topic is just footwork
Hamish Woodland if you want to win the audience then minimal forces and maximum intellect are the way to go.
id probably put the getting too personal thing into the first cetegory where you should not go all out ..but have the least amount of neccessary backgroudn inf oabout your opponent as necesarry to use against him
and range id say would be the vocabulary you use
you are not going to discuss somethign with a foreigner who barely speaks the language .. or a child with words that are .. out of his/ her range.. you should use the right kidn of words that fit this situation the most

Some people, myself included, raise their voices when passionate. It by no means allows you to infer the maturity of the other person. Instead, it simply allows you the ability to manipulate the other person's fervor for malicious purposes.
When a new lindybeige video pops up in your feed and it makes your day
Just a note, but some treatises do specifically tell you which edge (both front and back) to use in defensive actions. The only treatises that expressly describe using the flat of the blade to defend are for the langes messer and they specifically have a 'nagel' at the side of the guard to make that more practical.
(European treatises, that is)
Do you watch his videos waiting for him to get sidetracked? Love your channel btw
That annoyed me about the Mythbusters episode where they tried to cut a sword with a sword. They insisted that it MUST be edge to flat, because you NEVER block or parry with the edge.
I often say, as the movie character gets the pistol taken away, “when you have a distance weapon, keep your distance.” People seem to like closing the gap to point guns, but it’s the only way to lose.

There is one principle in combat : don't die.
their is three good way to do that.strike frist, Hit and hit hard. after all a knocked out or died enemy wount kill you.
From a soldier's perspective? there are three: 1. don't get hurt in any way, 2. don't kill anyone, 3. get as much money/fame/stuff/raping as possible
+jeremiaas15
"don't kill anyone"
"get as much [...] raping as possible"
Mixed up priorities much?
Not really, killing someone is rather deeply rooted as the ultimate crime in most cultures, plus, its effect is immediately apparent- there's a corpse. The effects of rape, such as mental trauma or pregnancy usually occur after the army has moved on, so as far as the soldiers are concerned, they're fictional.
A screaming, crying woman is a pretty immediate effect.

Max Cheng same. instant wt recognition :)
Will this "technique" be in ANY use in real fistfight? Against, lets say, boxing technique?
Unacceptable yes. and it works quite well,if practiced enough. as many techniques it requires a looot of training to master, but then it it superior to simple boxing. but since like...only 1 or 2 percent of people who "know martial arts" train enough, in 99% of all fight i think boxing will be more effective. because simpler. but my wtsung teacher... i could not fucking hit that guy, and i tried for real. for like 2 minutes.

I wish someone would ‘flick’ me like that in the middle of a fight lol I would probably pause to appreciate their effort.
Stay calm, don’t get lost in your emotions, and ‘focus’ on breathing. The main reason you don’t want to blow your load right out of the gate is because you don’t want to get winded 15 seconds into a fight (like most people do) But you’re definitely going to need to put some force and effort into a fight if you want to win a fight, esp if the other guy wants to win. And don’t ever quit.. the moment you let up, you lose control. Even if you think you’re losing, don’t give in, show that motherfucker you aren’t playing around, because chances are he’s on the verge of letting up too.

So ... "don't bring a sword to a pommel fight" isn't one of these?
1.) Know why you’re fighting and make sure it’s worth it.
2.) Fight to win, not in the way you want to fight.
3.) Don’t let your guard down when you think you’ve won.
The problem with staying in contact constantly with ones opponent is that while you know what your opponent is going to do slightly beforehand,as you can ussualy feel the movement through your arm, that means your opponent can also feel potential movements that you might make.

I like you and appreciate the effort you put into this.
My one problem... at least with applying the least amount of force necessarily... is that you rarely know EXACTLY what the enemy is going to do or how they are going to do it, especially initially. Also, it is a defensive tactic. Hear me out: When attacking something, no matter what it is (i.e. fist fight/army/sword-fight) using more force can be a better guarantee of success. Of course, as with your rule, it is entirely situational. The atomic bombs were used in WW2 with excessive force to guarantee a surrender. Now, taken into account with your second rule, the first rule does make sense... except the fact that you are giving away the initiative to your enemy. I'm going to run out of room here, but would love to talk about it more. Anyways some parting advice from someone wiser then I. "Know your enemy and know yourself, and you always win. Know yourself, but not the enemy, and you will win roughly half the time. Know neither yourself or your enemy, and you will always lose." - Sun Tzu
Good point. My issue with most martial arts taught is that the techniques require you to know how you are being attacked and what you are being attacked with. in most cases (assuming your opponent can fight) by the time you see the punch, its hit you.
Message me! I’d be down to debate some of whatever you would call what you’re wanting to discuss.
@Andrew Collins hello necro. It's been 5 years. 5. Years. I barely remember this video or what it talked about. The gist of what I said, though, is that you must assume that your enemy is capable and use the amount of force needed to quell them at their best. If they aren't at their best, it will be seen as overkill. But you can't assume your enemy will make a mistake.

3) Lots of Guns

Enjoyed the logic. Minimum force is absolutely the best avenue of approach. I'd be interested in seeing a test done, trying to punch or hit something with a weapon, with several different levels of telegraphing, and measuring the time that took to deliver the strike, the energy transfered, the energy cost (or how long it takes for you to get exhausted ), etc. Maybe even draw a graph. (who doesnt like graphs, right? ) Did anyone ever do something like this?
adrianks47 check the Larping community. Dagorhir and the like have some resources that are close.
I would do some tests with you
No really I know the answer to this but it’s hard to explain. So basically it’s all situational and extremely hard to do. Can happen from a level 0 fighter because they have fast reactions. On the other hand some people are really good at reading your opponent. And then there’s in between.
I would not rely on their telegraphs in a real duel as much as mine though. As long as you are wonkier and smarter than them you will be 2 steps ahead. I could never recommend actually waiting for the right moment to smack their weapon out of the way, instead create a trick that makes them do so, wait to smack but really you’re just two steps ahead wanting that to happen ya kno
Another thing I wouldn’t ever recommend is any inexperienced fighter trying to out ‘fight’ let alone believe they could block vs an extremely experienced one.
Of the many UA-cam channels I watch who actively promote their snake oils and various sponsors, you certainly make your advertisement the least offensive and the most interesting of all of them. I'm even tempted to actually sign on. You sell with an excellent style, useful content, and good humor. The best type of sales pitch. Good on you.
I was thinking that physically you can change your effective range a little in a fistfight if somebody is too short to be attacked directly, by sinking your stance, but then you are more solid and less mobile, which is a different disadvantage.
How almost everyone delivers the killing blow in the lindybeige universe

I still remember a principle that I learnt from the rulebook of my first tabletop wargame as a kid, havok, which was this grizzled sci fi veteran explaining that the first rule of warfare is whatever your enemy wants to do, don't let him do it. Make him do what you want him to do. Which I guess all three of those rules branch out from.

They really arent, they are classed as an offensive weapon. Basically the government changed it when Elon musk released his flamethrower as loads of people ordered them lol
An interesting thing about parrying with the edge is that the swords bite in to each other, then you will have a very good feel for the bind and the neither can slide the blade down to the others arms.

You got really good oratory skills. Keeping me engaged even throughout the sponsorship is a feat few youtubers actually manage.
A good application of the second rule.
I can only think of one exception from the rules, and that's again the second one - I do believe there can be an advantage to releasing contact, especially in ranged battles or war.
But then, ideally, you'd want to have some reconnaissance in place (contact?)
It's also possible that your enemy watches Lindybeige and decides to pursue you, not letting you do _your_ disengagement maneuver and hole up deeper in your territory.

This is the idea behind the Muay Thai Guard/The Boxing Guard. Its that way to deflect, and at worst, block or reduce the impact of strikes(if you do nothing, that is. The standard procedure when getting hit is to shield up until he punches himself out, then counterattack). Ive been training Muay Thai for years now, and thats what happened in sparring last night. Against one of my sparring partners he let loose on me with a flurry of hooks, I blocked/stuffed every one of them, took no damage, then as he was backing off and wheezing, I came after him and landed multiple jab-crosses and left hooks and leg kicks and body kicks and several straight kicks to the gut(and one right hook before the round ended). I got Muay Thai tomorrow night too. I love it. You should get into either Muay Thai Lindybiege(ideally), or if not available, then get into western Boxing. Both are exceptional fighting styles, and teach you how to fight perfectly with your hands. Both offensively and defensively.
These demonstrations are brilliant when you are playing both attacker and defender at the same time.
"Use the minimum force required" is truly spoken by a man who has never called in tanks or air to deal with a single machine gun.
Well, if you have nothing better than tanks or air may be the "minimum force required" to deal with a single machine gun.
I think that "the minumum force required," is somewhat akin to, "it's always in the last place you look." Because once you've found it, or dealt with the threat, you stop looking.
Evan, I'm guessing you're American.
There used to be a saying in the military, pretty much around the world.
You can tell you're fighting the British, because if you shoot at them, you'll get a load of accurate rifle fire back. You can tell it is the Americans when they take cover, and then an air strike takes out the nearby village.
@@NigelTolley that's a complement for the Americans. Use the tech that you have. Lots of money went into development for a reason
@@NigelTolley yeah the Americans are extremely dependent on the improper use of ordinance.
I agree with the idea of the first point but I think minimum force is the wrong term, minimum action is probably a better way of stating the same thing. Also, I don't know if you have but you would really enjoy The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, he has a very level-headed approach to combat and many of the ideas you say on your channel can be found in his book.
Can't wait to watch all the response videos from other youtubers
I've been filming and editing combat sports for almost 10 years now, mainly pro's but ranging from first fight to their 300th fight. Every good commentator i've worked with talks about these principles in some way when discerning who is winning the fight. I can pretty much predict who is going to win based on this too - there's always a possible freak occurrence because the fighter adhering to these 3 principles will possibly not always adhere and then they get caught. What i find really great to watch is fighters who use a combination of these principles with long term damage and fatigue. More than often watching fighters from Thailand who have 100+ fights in experience they'll wear down a muscle group by hitting the area every 30 seconds for 3-5 rounds - once saw a guy collapse just because his opponent had peppered his legs with so many hits. Nothing was broken but the fatigue of constantly defending and recovering was enough.
"Don't use a bigger gun than necessary to stop the enemy tanks"
Yea, that sounds reasonable... -returns to buildin my Big Berthas in Total Annihilation
Vulcans are better.
So was using atomic bombs in Japan the minimum force necessary to do the job?
s1Lence it's very difficult to tell what minimum force is. the issue is that if you use under the minimum amount of force you get hit while if you go over your still not hit.
s1Lence minimum force to archive what? Defeating Japan in a drawn out battle of attrition? Maybe not, but that would require some numbers gaming and simulation.
Convincing them to surrender immediately? That required a show of unprecedented, even inconceivable at the time, force.
Robert Martinu not to mention it told those commies to step off!
Actually, it probably kind of was, considering that, as far as I can tell, other options would be to just sit and blockade Japan (thus, starving Japan's population and allowing Japan forces in China to continue murdering prisoners and locals), or invade (which would most likely cause even worse casualties for both sides). Also, neither of those options would stop the regular bombing, which is no better in terms of how many people die than using nuclear bombs.
I do think that dropping the nuclear bombs away from settlements could also work, probably.
s1Lence: It ended the war in less than a week, so yes.
Gotta love the armchair champions in the comments here.
CasualCoreK you realize this is Lloyd right? Armchair martial artists are on equal footing here.
CasualCoreK I've bean fencing for 8 years and most of what he says is actually right from my experience the problom is the scenarios I mean if someone just out of no where punched you you wouldn't have enough time to react especially if your a bit drunk and you get into an argument your both just arguing no violence then he throws a punch you gunna get hit becuase you where just verbally argueing where as in fencing it does work a lot better becuase your allready in position to do those things where as at a bar your a bit drunk oh the man arguing with you throws a punch you would realize it after it was half ways to your face but I love his videos becuase it gets you thinking and I'm not saying you can't party like he said you can but you have to be prepared already to do so no normal person can just out of no where parry it also takes years of practice
So glad you included range. It's so common for even proficient, but less experienced fighters to forget about that in sparring in my experience.
Your personality carries this channel. Cheers from Texas!
i am not 100 % agree with the first point in a battle to juse mire power that necesary its some time more useful for psychologick warfare or to demoraisation of the enemy .staj in contact is some time not so when yuor enemy is better in contact .
It doesn't apply 100% of the time, but it's a good principle. Use just as much force as necessary, preserve your energy, and be ready for a counter-attack.

7.00 I disagree. If you have AT guns that can kill tanks at 2000 yds use them, or if you let the tanks get to 1000 yds they will shoot back
Danny RLM well he said the minimum I think he was just using an example.
"Going into the bind" in french is called "prise de fer" (the iron taking). The feeling of other's sword you get is simply called "le sentiment du fer" (the iron feeling, and yes, sentiment here in french is the meaning you have as in "sentimental". Let's kill each other, but with feelings involved, shouldn't we ?).
When I used to teach basic fencing to people who were starting I used an upended kitchen chair for them to practice parrying. They could not get their movement past the chair legs and taught them that economy of movement was better than flailing about.
Haha I love lindy but watching him tell us about parrying in hand to hand combat is hilarious.
So I signed up for the great courses plus and forgot to cancel my subscription when the trial was over. Hopefully the fact that I paid them $60 before I noticed means that you get a decent bonus from that xD
"everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face" - Mike Tyson
