Here is a tip that this worked for me. If your printer is self contained and can stand alone on the network via Wi-fi meaning it can see your routers ssid and you can program the password of your Wi-fi then linux mint should be able to see your printer and you should be able to select it as default without having to install any drivers. Now this did work for me as I was using Linux mint 19.0 to 19.3 ... If you upgrade to mint 20.0 you might have to install the driver via Gdebi package installer which made it very easy to install - almost like windows .exe file installation. now this was a Brother printer I use - but to other style printers I don't know if it is as easy to do that as well, the manufacture will have the drivers if needed. just choose the deb file driver for linux mint it should be repetitively easy to get the printer working. Brother HL-L2390DW is another great printer/scanner stand alone via wi-fi.
What to do if linux mint sees printer but not scanner? Ive added printer step by step as you did - printing pages works but when Im opening simple scan it says "no scanners added" and I cant scan anything :/
Hi Charles, to be honest I've had very limited experience using a cable, mostly wifi for myself, I don't see why it wouldn't work, if you want to try, download your distro of choice, write it to a USB and then run it from the USB without making any changes to your computer, that's what we call running from a live environment, you could test your printer in the live environment, once you shut down your computer will start like normal.
very instructive ,now I have 2 questions, lets say that I have a win 10 laptop with Brother printer all in one, which works ,I also have a old thinkpad that still has to have the bros. printer driver installed ;is it possible to access the printer via the Win 10 ,by using the linux mint 20.3 on the thinkpad. or do I have to install the LPR driver to Mint . Thanking you
I have a DCP-J725DW all in one ;I went to the Australian website to download the drivers, there are 2.One is the "Driver install tool with the Tar file .the second one is titled "Printer drivers" LPR printer driver ,and CUPS wrapper printer driver ,all deb files Hope this helps
@@panjo40 support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=eu_ot&lang=en&prod=dcpj725dw_eu_as this website offers a Linux (deb) file if it's the correct one download that. A .deb file in Linux is like a .exe file in windows you double click it and it will install, this works for Debian/Ubuntu based distros only, as long as you have gdebi installed which I'm sure you will being Linux Mint, hope this helps. :)
@@pctlc I tried the deb. file, but they are for 386 ,not 64 ;thanks once again ,I shall keep trying ,otherwise I have a HP .BTW I corsider Brother as the RollsRoyce of printers ,this on is my second on ,my first one lasted just over 7 years
Hi Colin I have a question about LMDE (Mint Debian Edition). Can I update the sources.list to replace the current one with Debian bullseye ? Or would it be better to install vanilla Debian ?
That's a good question, I've used LMDE before but never messed with the repos, not sure if you have the resources for a vm, I would have to think that would be the best way to test out first.
Saludos.
Half a Hissy Fit? LMAO Classic Mate! You were doing a bunch on that old girl of a laptop... :-) What? Mint 18.3.. :-) I had to update my last Mint 18.3 last week. I did something and it was acting dumber than me. Lol So I figured it was a good time to just update and add a couple new 2 Terabyte drives in the media server and clone the old drives and save them as backups just in case... :-D Now with the new drives for the videos/music and a Mint update to 20.1 on the system drive were good to go for a bit! :-) Thanks for the video! Did something and it was acting dumber than me Hahahaha!! you crack me up Bruce!! bloody printers! I think they spit out 10% of ink while going through some kind of dodgy startup check, Hahahaha!! yes I've been looking at 2TB hard drives recently, tech is expensive in Aus, bloody rip off! waiting for specials lol
@@pctlc HaHaHA yep all that back and forth bull crap is a bit dodgy... I don't have a inkjet that works. I have 3 of them in the junk corner out of ink. The bloody ink cost more that a new printer... Lol I have a Old HP Laser printer I've had for 10 years and have only used 2 toner cartridges. I use it also to make PCB prints alot... Ya Aus stuff is a rip off on price. I had a guy in Sydney I think years ago that would buy his CB Radio stuff off of ebay and have it shipped to me as it was free shipping. Then I would box it all up and take it to the post office and ship it to Aus... Shipping back then to Aus was crap then. It was anywhere from $75 to $100 us to ship a 5 pound box that would cost $20 bucks in the US... I get my 2 TB drives for $65 bucks and free shipping. What does it cost there? Noisy I am... Lol Later Gator! LLAP
Thanks! Just had to install simple-scan on Endeavour OS and now everything's working great

Thanks for the video Colin. Good info for newbies.
Thanks Tony!!
Thanks for the video Colin and as always good information

canon pixma 2500 series is ok with mint 21
Hi printer showing as pushed.after adding printer kindly suggest
Hi, Sorry, I am not sure what you mean by pushed?
Thank you for your channel. I would like to try Linux. I have a printer with a cable. Is it a similar process?
Hi Charles, to be honest I've had very limited experience using a cable, mostly wifi for myself, I don't see why it wouldn't work, if you want to try, download your distro of choice, write it to a USB and then run it from the USB without making any changes to your computer, that's what we call running from a live environment, you could test your printer in the live environment, once you shut down your computer will start like normal.
How do I open the maintenance menu? (for head cleaning etc.)
I've been looking, but still not working ( linuxmint uma 20.2 )
Head cleaning is normally built into the printer these days, unless your printer does not have a menu display?

thank you very much
You're very welcome!!
The reason I asked the question is because to install the Bro. printer driver to mint is a pain ,you have to axtract a Tar file ,etc.
Hi Joseph, have you got a link from where you got the tar file, if so I'll take a look, I maybe able to help you with that.
I need a high-quality picture. Scand and print
Thx dude
