Brother provided instructions how to install their Linux Driver using Linux Terminal, but as is typical, there was enough confusion or lack of clarity for me to simply guess at what they were "saying". Since computers are so literal, the addition or omission of even a space between command elements would result in a fail. Your video was exactly what I needed. 5 years after you posted this video, the information is still relevant. Thank You.
Thank you for such clear step by step instructions. What a relief to find someone who can really bring it down to a level and pace that anyone can understand and follow. There seem to be so many knowledgeable Linux people out there who want to be helpful to beginners, but they just can't seem to communicate at a beginners level.. They start off with some kind welcoming words, but the next thing you know, they are off to the races spouting Linux lingo and commands without any clarification. I thought for sure I was going to have to go back to Windows since wasn't able to figure out what to do with the drivers once downloaded to Linux. Thanks to you, I was able to get my printer up and running in linux Lite and learned a little about using command prompts too.
Thanks for the kind words :) I'm glad it helped you. If you have any other questions that you can't find an answer to, feel free to send me a message. Good Luck!
Awesome. The only reason this wasn't working for me at first was because I wasn't following your instructions to the t. Very professional and much appreciated.
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. Lenny. I have just bought an HL-1112 printer and the driver base in Linux Mint didn't have the correct one. I did as you suggested -- the Printers Directory was a brilliant idea, by the way -- and followed your instructions to a T. It took a little while until everything was finished and then a Test Page printed! You are a terrific teacher -- liked and subscribed, with lots of thanks. PL
i had never loaded a printer in linux before. i had a wireless Brother printer and thanks to this video i was able to install it. Thank you for making this video, it was clear and easy to follow.
Thank you so much for the info. You are very thorough. Next time you can let them know to right click in the printer directory and select "open in terminal". Definitely easier for newer people. But very nicely done!!
Lenny Thx too much for this video. I am trying to configure my Brother HL 1202, an hour ago. And your video help me to install once and for all. You explain very well, congrats. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ale
Thank you very much ;Len that was a very splendid procedure. When I opened the file to extract I did not have the same set-up dialog box you have ,but I still managed to succeed. Your idea of a seperate folder also means that you could possibly transfer that fil eo whenever you install another distro, keep up the good tutorials.
Hi Lenny, I second Mad Harry.I had the same frustrating experience to looking for a tutorial a linux-beginner can understand.Following your detailed explanations even I was able to make my printer running. Thanks a lot and a "Happy New Year" to you.
This was great. I am using Zorin 15 OS and I followed your instructions and everything loaded perfectly. My printer is a Brother HL-L2300D Keep up the good work!
This is Brilliant! I have struggled before with Linux, but this guy makes it so easy and understandable. My new Brother MFC-j491DW worked first time, and scans as well. Top Marks Len
I am slowly working towards eliminating my windows/linux dual boot and eventually moving towards 100@ linux, and videos like this make it much easier to do. I am loving my mint install, but the few occasional linux quirks and difficulties are made much easier by step by step videos such as this.
Wow it worked the first time. Wow thanks for the video. I had to redo the installation at the point of selecting the proper number which was 15, instead of the Device URI.
Yes, that was VERY helpful! I really needed to see it done that way BEFORE I go to install a new printer when I get it so I don't scatter stuff everywhere like you said! I can learn some good ways of doing things in Linux from you, Thank you!
Both of my printers (MFC J 475W & MFC J 430W) act dumb when I attempt a test page. Some how, somewhere I have apparently got something wrong or missed a step. Rather than watching & listening to the video while trying to do the process, a list of the steps I could print out and follow would be helpful.
Lenn Thank you so much for doing a great video on installing the drivers for a { BROTHER} printer, Although I did have a bit of a puzzling time when I tried to change directory as linux said it didn't exist - where you changed the directory to downloads/Printer/ I think the extra {/} was needed at the end but never the less I got it to work. Fantastic Video, however I recommend that when you show the terminal as you are typing - It would help to zoom in a bit more and or put the commands that you typed in the description as I found it a bit hard to see but other than that Great job. Thanks again
Thanks for the excellent instructions! I followed your video as went thru the terminal commands to install my Brother HL-2270DW. I'm using mate 18.1 and entered the ip address in the choices menu (no auto config choice).
Appreciated the instructional. Would the setup be the same through a wireless setup? Entered IP address of printer, it executed without errors, but no test page -> The device just shows "Processing" indefinitely. Cancelling the job and attempting to execute another to the same end ...
Thank you very much ,I shall do exactly as you recommend, esp. the "printer " folder.I really appreciate your review because you enunciate ver clearly and succinctly. You must have the patience of Job. We wish youand the family a Happy New Year and may the weather be kind. God Bless, From Down Under , Joe &Monika Barr
+JOSEPH BARR Thank you Joe and Monika, I'm glad that the videos have helped. That is my intention. I know how frustrating it can be venturing into something new, especially Linux. Glad I could help. my issue is it all goes well until near the end it says...cups service failed...check cups service. trying to run a brother mfc-j497dw with usb only and it still wants me to connect to https:631 an all that does is show a page not found..even the local host 127.0.0.1 is not found...odd thing is I changed over an HP laptop to Linux Mint 19.1 Tessa and the printer works but on my desktop running a full install of the same OS on a bootable USB the cups thing goes belly up. printer is never recognized but for some odd reason the Simple Scan function works....odd to say the least.
That's an MFP. So, the question is, does the *scanner work? Currently searching for printer/scanners (MFPs) to buy for my Linux, considering HP or Brother.
Procedure worked for Ubuntu 18.04. However, printing options do not work. Although I choose grayscale, it prints as colorful or I choose the best quality it prints in the fast quality. Do you have any solution for this problem. Thanks
Thanks Lenny for your excellent video,I got my printer working. But what about the Scanner ?I guess I am not the only one with the problem,so,a video with instructions which also a layman could understand would be appreciated. Thanks again and kind regards.
You instructions are very clear and thorough. However, at the stage where I'm trying to run the installer file, I get the error message "cannot execute binary file." I can't progress past this point. Attempting to install a printer in Liinux has given me a new appreciation for Microsoft Windows. : (
I did it with my HL1202 and it didn't work out. The strange fact is that it prints few pages, but when I decide to print a file with, let's say, 25 pages starting for the even ones it doesn't function
When I typed in the installer name -sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1 HL-2280DW- and ran it I got an error: "Restarting cups (via systemctl): cups.service. lpinfo: cups-deviced failed to execute. lpinfo: cups-deviced failed to execute. lpinfo: cups-deviced failed to execute. lpadmin: Bad device-uri scheme "usb"." The printer is seen by computer and connected by usb.
holy cow.. how long does this process run.. selecting .. preparing to unpack .. unpacking...? ( i guess when your machine is a dinosaur like mine it takes a few minutes)
I have done the same process but when I try to use any scan app such as VueScan it says that I don't have any printer installed on my Linux, btw, I'm using Kde Neon 5.16
I am a total beginner and failed when it was not specified whether to use upper or lower cases or spaces in the Terminal, (also had to fine how to open a terminal through google). Never got any further then my terminal saying that there is no such file directory. not sure whether it is due to wrong spelling (the window of the terminal in UA-cam tutorial is too small for me to read) or due to a missing something in my laptop.
May I help? Let's begin. The terminal may seem to be a very difficult tool to use, however once you learn how it is structured and a few commands, not to mention the power and speed of it, you will most likely come to love and prefer it over the GUI interface. You have learned step one, how to access it. Once opened you can start by typing some simple commands, ls (List the contents of the current directory), cat(Displays the content of a file to the standard out. 'Your monitor'), and cd (Change directory. Moves you to other directories up the tree). These are just a few of hundreds of commands used in bash (The name of the common shell that you are using). There are others available but stay here as bash is used on many Linux systems. Also note that bash is case sensitive and mostly uses lower case unless specified. Example: You should note that Directories are listed with the first letter of the name in Uppercase, Documents,Downloads and Music etc. In order for you to access them in the terminal you must type the name as it appears. So type (ls) to select a directory by typing (cd) + directory name + enter to view the contents of that directory. When finished type (cd) to return to your home directory. Also note hat for every command there is a man (Manual) page that describes every aspect of that command in detail. Example: Type (man) space (cd) to see the manual page for the cd command. Type q to quit the page. There are tons of videos that describe how to use the linux terminal and Joe Collins does an excellent job in a video call the bash shell I think. Hope this helps. P.S. Lenny may also have one but I am not sure.
Thank you I followed this step by step several times. [ Disclaimer: I used the rpm version instead of the debian version of the installer ] I keep getting the same message at the end of the procedure. It can't find the libusb-0.1-4. I have that dependency installed. For some reason the installer can't find it, and so is trying to find it and install it with "apt-get." I would think lots of users would be having this issue if it were a problem with the driver. So I must be doing something wrong ? Right ?? I think that libusb file is related to the scanner, and my printer is just a printer. It completes the install, but nothing will print, nor not even a test print. So I just chose a similar printer from the list that the YAST box displays and the printer will print. I just am concerned it is not printing at its best potential. The print box gives no choice of quality, or resolution or color, etc. The test print page looks suitable, but I really don't know how to read it. My printer is the new HL-L3270CDW, and Brother supports that in Linux. I chose the HL-3400CN. I doubt an untrained eye could find anything wrong with the printed image. But I paid extra for a printer with higher resolution. I thought the perk to CUPS is to not have to worry with all this stuff. I tried printing wi-fi, and USB. I have not tried network printing yet.
+JOSEPH BARR We were 75 degrees F on Christmas day. Now it's cooler and wet. Normallt this time of year we get to 55deg F during the day, down in the 30's at night. Not too bad. Stay safe and have a great New Year Joseph!
Hello I am writing from Italy, sorry for my English. I didn't create the folder PRINTERS during installation. Can I create it after installation and move on it all files created during intallation ?
Hi Lenny. I only just found you. I am totally new to Linux and your video help. The system i have max out 2GB RAM and windows 10 Pro 32 Bit ran like molasses. My printer is actually DocuPrint M225 dw which a forum said it same drivers as brother DCP-L2540DW and it prints fine. My scanner / copy does not work. Can you do a video on how to do that? I didn't exactly follow the step you did so i restarted it and i went to somewhere and selected ( usb port maybe ) something and it worked and printed test page. I don't know if this is the right area to directly contact you so i hope you can reply back soon. I really want to know how to use Linux to a level just so i van revive old systems and help people i live with to use Linux but i need to know first myself how to use.
Thanks! Got it myself but then wanted to know if itś normal that it takes so much time and licence-agreements:-) i felt like being hacked as the installer went on in the terminal
Hi Lenny I had large trouble with installing my MFC-880DW under Linux Ubuntu 18.06 Your instructions had been helpful up to this point enter Ip address I did it, next line is as follows:brsaneconfig4 - a name=MFC-J880DW model=MFC-J880DW ip=192.168.178.26 after having pressed enter I'm at the beginning....... @.....e6224-laptop:~/Downloads $ . Any idea what was wrong Klaus from Germany
Did you try doing this install again under Linux lite 3.0? It seems that after I started using Linux Lite 3.0. I install the printer driver but I don't get all the options I used to have. For example, I can't change the toner saver mode and I can't print on both sides of the paper.
Hi. I am able to get my Brother printer working but not my scanner. Have you had success there? If so could you point me in the right direction? The Brother site did not do it for me. But maybe I erred. Thanks.
Your information has been very helpful and I was able to get the files needed. But I so have this problem: after opening a terminal and typing cd downloads/printer then enter, I get this responds: bash: cd: downloaders/printer: no such file or directory. I've downloaded the driver tools, mfcj480dwcupswrapper, mfcj480dwlpr, and linux brprinter installer. I'm wanting to use the printer with a usb port which is installed. Thank-you for all your help.
It sounds like you haven't created the /printer directory in your downloads folder. Or you arer spelling something wrong in your command that doesnt match what you created.

I don't know if this is the right area to directly contact you so i hope you can reply back soon. I really want to know how to use Linux to a level just so i van revive old systems and help people i live with to use Linux but i need to know first myself how to use.
Thanks a bunch man, I can use my printer now.

Hi Lenny
I had large trouble with installing my MFC-880DW under Linux Ubuntu 18.06 Your instructions had been helpful up to this point
enter Ip address I did it, next line is as follows:brsaneconfig4 - a name=MFC-J880DW model=MFC-J880DW ip=192.168.178.26
after having pressed enter I'm at the beginning....... @.....e6224-laptop:~/Downloads $ . Any idea what was wrong

Did you try doing this install again under Linux lite 3.0?
It seems that after I started using Linux Lite 3.0. I install the printer driver but I don't get all the options I used to have. For example, I can't change the toner saver mode and I can't print on both sides of the paper.
I did not try the install again. What distro were you using prior to LL3?
*****
LL2.8
Hi. I am able to get my Brother printer working but not my scanner. Have you had success there? If so could you point me in the right direction? The Brother site did not do it for me. But maybe I erred. Thanks.
hi, you should install libsane-extras from the repos (sudo apt-get install libsane-extras) and your scanner will work just fine!
Very helpful, Thanks a lot
