  • Hey Everyone,
    In this video I will be showing you the results of my 2024 spring renovation and I will also go into how you can deal with Poa Annua (annual meadow grass) and quackgrass. I have an infestation of those going on and I will tell you how I plan to deal with them.

    I have been following your tips for a while now, which has been a huge help for my lawn. Last week, I just seeded a new area of my backyard and it started to come through in just 4 days! I used an Amazon compost spreader to put soil over the top which certainly helps. Something I did different this year was spread some ground coffee to keep the ants away, as they have a habit of simply walking off with half the seeds where we live, even if they are buried. For weeds, since I have a dislike of weed killers, I usually perform what I like to call "hair translants." I prepare some grass in little seedling containers, and when they're ready, I cut out the weed completely (roots and all) and drop the transplant in place. Looks odd for a couple of weeks, but it quickly starts to blend in. Thanks for the tips, good luck with the summer. Cheers from the south of France.

      Hey mate! Thanks, very glad you find the videos helpful! Great job with the lawn and thanks for the tip with the coffee, I also have some issues with ants, will try that next time! Was also thinking about doing that transplant, I used to do it a couple of years ago but not anymore, now that you mentioned it, it would maybe work awesome against the quack grass, just replacing it with some new grass straight away so it doesn´t have a chance to pop up. Great idea mate!!

    Hi Sam, in Austria we are allowed to use a selective herbicide against Queckgrass, this stuff is called HIRSEFREI EXTRA. It's a version of BAYER Puma Extra, what is a commercial use selective herbicide against queckgrass (in Austria we call queckgrass HIRSE).
    I apply it in May when the Hirse is starting to grow good and then bye bye for the rest of the year 😂
    gope you can fet it in Sweden - good luck! 😊

    My Monaco Bermuda seems to have a VERY slow start like your KBG. I pushed the limits this time pre germinating by letting many sprout, 8 days in the buckets. huge success, I saw grass blades the very next day, Sprouts are more visible everywhere after 5 days. Lesson learned, if you dont see many shooting roots in the strainer, do not seed yet unless the weather makes you. Regular seeding seems to germinate at different times, pre germination hits many much faster, it is day 13 total of the seeds being wet. I saw nothing like this just seeding by day 13

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  24 дні тому

      I guess that´s the balance we have to find, letting it sprout enough so that it really gets going as soon as you get it out on the lawn AND not letting it sprout TOO much so it becomes difficult to spread.

  • @nelsonhuie7382
    @nelsonhuie7382 Місяць тому +1

    Lol so true about KBG. The anxiety of over seeding. After all the hard work and the process you just keep it moist, hope and pray lol. Keep up the hard work. Have you looked into TTTF a or Rye?

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  Місяць тому +2

      haha I know right! Stupid slow grass! 😂
      But now that it is growing, I am also reminded that it really is a gorgeous grass type! 😍
      I had a 100% Rye grass lawn before this, but Rye is sensitive to cold weather, so our harsh winters in Sweden killed off a lot of the Rye every year, so that´s why I am switching over to KGB and introducing some creeping red fescue to the mix. See if that helps. Haven´t tried TTTF, tried to find it in Sweden, but I couldn´t find anyone selling any mixes with alot of TTTF in it, at the most the mix had 5% or 10% of it, doesn´t seem to be very popular over here in the EU.

    Great job, Sam! Your lawn looks much better than before. After watching your awesome video I had a couple of thoughts to share with you. Consider using a CF Valve (constant flow valve) for your backpack sprayer. These valves provide consistent pressure, similar to electric sprayers, and automatically shut off if the pressure drops below the specified psi rating. This makes pumping easier and reduces the number of pumping strokes needed. I recommend using a 21 psi CF Valve for your sprayer. They are easy to install and cheap you won't be disappointed.
    As for the POA, it's quite challenging to kill without spending a significant amount on a post-emergent commercial herbicide. Instead, consider using an organic pre-emergent with corn gluten to prevent Poa seeds from germinating and spreading. Additional ways to suppress Poa, applying FeSO4 at a rate of 0.5 - 1 pound per 1,000 sq.ft. Applications of PGR with paclobutrazol, applied at 0.004 - 0.007 pound per 1,000 sq.ft. If you do regular treatments of this for 1-2 years you can reduce Poa grass populations to less than 10%.
    Regarding quack grass, the best option is to use Puma selective herbicide, which you should be able to order online. If you have difficulty finding it, I could sell you some.

    • @SamsLawn

      Hey mate! I am so glad you found my channel, you always have awesome helpful tips! I will look into the valve, sounds awesome! I actually got an electric sprayer too, just haven´t had time to unbox it even 😅
      Didn´t think there was an organic way to control Poa! Will definitely look into corn gluten, even if it´s slower and maybe not as effective as chemicals I will gladly use anything as long as it helps a little bit along the way!
      I looked up Puma, but it doesn´t say on the label that it controls quack grass?
      Thanks mate, appreciate your input!

      @@SamsLawn Thank you Sam. Life is all about helping each other and sharing knowledge. Electric is definitely the way to go. Just a heads up, if you're using a Chapin, take the cover off and check the hose clamp before it ruins the pump/battery. Be sure to keep the battery pack out until you've filled up the sprayer, any water will fry the battery. Careful with soluble powders be sure to use the strainer and hot water. Debris can easily get past the screens into the pump, causing surges and messing up your spray coverage. It's a pain to fix, as you have to take everything apart. I highly recommend getting a 2-nozzle boom they're super efficient. With it, I can cover 20,000 sq.ft in just 30 minutes. Pair it with a TeeJet XR11003VS or XR11004VS Extended Range nozzle, and you'll be incredibly efficient. Also, if you're applying soil amendments, like wetting agent, consider using a TeeJet Air Induction nozzle. These nozzles increase water droplet size, helping the products get into the soil instead of just sitting on the foliage.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  Місяць тому

      @@LegendaryLawnCare89 I actually have a flowzone, but I assume the boom can be used with that one too? I was looking into those, looked nice, cover more area :)

    • @LegendaryLawnCare89
      @LegendaryLawnCare89 Місяць тому +1

      @@SamsLawn I realized my mistake about the Puma. I've only used it on crabgrass, so I assumed it would be effective against quackgrass. After reading some herbicide research papers, I see that you were 100% correct. There are a few options for dealing with quackgrass. Option 1: because quackgrass grows faster than other grasses, you can mow it short and then wait until the quackgrass is 1" taller than your lawn. Then, you can apply Fusilade II or Glyphosate with an AccuTip Dauber to avoid any drift (just don't walk in the areas you spray, work backwards). Option two: depending on how bad the infestation is, you could use a plugger and replace the quackgrass with healthy turfgrass. Option three: making frequent applications of low rates of Nitrogen will eventually choke it out over a couple of years. If you want to make the quackgrass grass less visible, you can use a high rate of chelated iron it will kill the foliage without harming your grass, and iron is great for chlorophyll production.
      For the boom attachment, you'll need to figure out your thread size to see if it's compatible. You can buy an adapter/reducer bushing or make your own boom out of PVC or something similar. The TeeJet nozzles are definitely compatible with your sprayer btw. If you're going to be doing a lot of spraying, it's worth reading up on the different types of nozzles for specific applications. TeeJet has a nozzle for every application and they come in a variety of GPM and different spray angles. Also, check out tank mixing procedures to get the most out of your applications and avoid any potential problems (hint: W.A.L.E.S. tank mixing order). Personally, I love trying new products and different tank mixes. I'm actually in the process of bottling a couple of new products that I came up with - just waiting on a shipment of bottles. If you ever have any questions about application rates, product compatibility, or turfgrass management, just ask - I'm happy to help. I have lots of experience in the golf course industry and lawn care.

    Tell us more about that Makita attachment. I suppose it's the EM407MP rotary scissors? Do you prefer it for edging over string?
    I appreciate your translation of quackgrass to kvickrot! Adding such overlays more often would be awesome so I don't need to pause and google all the time. Perhaps you should consider adding such translations as well as model numbers like the Makita attachment to your descriptions?
    I've been eyeing the Burgon & Ball and Sneeboer & Zn scarifying rakes and the Swardman & Risisani hollow tines. Perhaps they could be something for you to get at the areas closer to the edges? Please try them so I don't have to! 😆

      Hey mate! Yes that´s the one! I am actually doing a comparison video right now :)

      So I appreciate the feedback, I will try to put more overlays and explain what I am using. I actually bought a "cultivator" I use it in my next video, I think it worked great. It doesn´t scarify, but it does cultivate the soil before seeding. Maybe I will invest in a scarifying rake too ;)

    Fiskars make a rotary spiky cultivator other folks call a "Weasel tool".
    An import that is very strong and sturdy is made by Corona over here, worth the money as the weight of it will shallow cultivate your edges for seeding.
    Quack can be discouraged a bit if you cut across the crown or center of a bunch with a sharp knife.

      I am thinking to apply it in coming spring . For the time being i am planing to not use any herbicides , will just pull the weeds and seed grass in place with top deessing , as its quite rainy weather now a days and soils is very moist so hopefully it will ease my work and thicken the lawn .
