So interesting that people want to argue about his nationality and his religious views. I find in his writting a soul that transends all religion and nationality that is at the very soul of humanity. Like Rumi and Hafiz he embodied the soul of oneness it self a universal being who will always remembered and influence the collective consciouness for all time. Thank you Salma for reminding us of the beauty that lies at the very essence of life.

If you love the prophet you may like the book Spirits Rebellious also by Kahlil Gibran. One of my all time favorites, but be careful it may ignight your soul.

Gibran wrote a master piece. Its my favorite of all the books Ive read. It transcends every cultural political geographical division that Ive experienced. All the challenges, all of pleasures...life in all of its complexities and the simpliest joys and satisfactions... through poetry...but thats not only poetry. It addresses so many of lifes challenges in a way that anyone, anywhere, in any set of circumstances can understand...and embrace for their own deeper understanding, growth, and connection to the devine. It the expression of life and the amazing depth of the human experience of it. Gibran was more then a poet. He was more then a visionary. He was artist with a gift to express in the written word what most loose in the use of words. Truly an amazing man.

I had the book as younger lady and it was truly inspiring and very spiritual. As young as I was, I saw something quite unique in Khali, that made a special impression on my life.

I was wondering why I haven't seen her lately. The Maronites in Lebanon, were originally of the Eastern Christian Orthodox branch, as Khalil Gibran himself lamented that they were absorbed by the Catholic church around 1799.

Khalil Gibran's book "The Prophet"shared by my friend Marissa who I grew up with even til us both at College locally & working at "The Mall" @ retail store "Jean Country" She got engaged to Mark~ thier 2 pea's in a heart speak pod soul mates. These 2 resonate such a deep love evolving towards elder respite together. That witnessing vision knowing of them for me was a beautiful moment.
So...........
During lunch breaks together at "Jean Country" she would read through, out loud to me, Gibran's Poems. You see she wanted to pick a poem to resite to Mark at the Alter on their wedding day. This book meant the world to her heart speak, since her Mother & Father would share his poems growing up.
I was so in aw of her depth to share asking me to listen and discern with her~ which poem to pick, to recite to Mark on the Wedding Alter the day of their Union.
She's keen to my whismy humor & a mix bag of being diligent discerning grounded heart knowing to being a skecptic too, just like her.
Two sisters that never grew up w/ having a sister bonding moment.
I forget the Gibran Poem Marissa chose for her sharing to Mark at the Alter of Union.
Yet I remember so many touching poems, as she read, said to her at one point keep reading the poems to me, but only you will know the align expression within Gibran's Poems the One to share w/ Mark from your heart speak union & what poem expresses for you.......

It was this one day on another lunch break & she read the Gibran Poem "On Children"
After we both had tears in our eyes, goose bumps, speachless after nodding, crying mixed emotions, the good, bad, ugly, indifferent...to a deep sigh, yes to whimsy humor banter after, like a scared clearing of cathartic residue & yeah make peace with starting al New Chapter on the evolving Life Path and hugs.
Lunch over, we're back on the retail floor at Jean Country selling Jeans........

Well I'm Latin ( Mexican ) I like the book, I may watch the film . But Salma your English is not the best ( I mention that because she many times mention that Latin don't speak English) .
Why everybody forget that Khalil Gibran was Maronite Catholic, Christian, while every time emphasizing that he was Arab?

You don't like arabs? You don't know how he identified himself. But he definitely grew up in an arab culture with an arabic language, so that certainly was part of forming his identity and character, along with his beliefs. If you want to erase the arabic aspect of him, and you don't want to accept all the aspects that shaped him, then you don't deserve to read his work and you will not understand it. And for your information, back in his time, Arabs, regardless of their religions, lived together as one, and accepted one another, unlike in other places around the world. So I don't think he saw that he was different from other arabs because of his religion. You DO know that there are MANY MANY arabs who are Christians and Jews, not just Muslims. Thanks.

Enough of this apotheosis of Kahlil. He was an OK writer but not a good poet. His English writings were co-written by his benefactor Mary Haskell. His English was not good enough to write the Prophet in English. She ended up marrying a 75-year-old man from Savannah after she wasted her life and money and intellect on Kahlil. She was a giver. He was a taker. As for his influence in Arabic, he helped usher Arabic Literature into the Romantic era, otherwise, he is rarely mentioned among the modern poets of "Mahjar" or migration poets. Some of his most celebrated quotes are on marriage when he is actually promoting infidelity under the guise of spirituality ! if you do not drink from each other's cup whose cup do you drink from? This is the eternal problem with vague, obscure aphorisms---Any meaning will do.

I am sure as you criticize his English, you yourself do not speak another language. Khalil Gibran was an immigrant from Lebanon and he learned English as an adult. The English he used in his writings is very simple but beautiful nonetheless.
@@cestbonbon5961 It is clear that you did not read Kahlil's other writings in English that preceded "the Prophet." Before the Prophet, Kahlil wrote in very antiquated formal English until his mentor Mary Haskell helped him write in simple English. Like all immigrant writers, he carried a chip on his shoulders trying to prove that his command of literary English was perfect, but this brought him nothing but jeers until Mary told him to write in simple English (and collaborate with him on the Prophet without getting the credit she deserved)
