I did some research on it. It comes from ancient Indo-European tradition. The Indo-Europeans believed that spirits resided in trees and that if you knocked on the wood of the tree, you gained the protection and good favor of the spirits in the tree. I was the last of 3 - my parents were a bit like 'ah can't be fucked' so my 2 older siblings are almost fluent trilingual... which kinda sucked for me when I actually went to see my abolita in Mexico.
