ED-209 is such an awesome design. The shape and eyeless look vaguely reminds one of an alien xenomorph. What a wonderful piece of military hardware it would be if they worked the links out of it. I think a 4 legged version like a centaur would have alleviated many of its stair trending and maneuvering problems. Plus may have been able to increase its running speed. Interesting thought. Thanks for this video!
I always made that association with the xenomorph. But apparently ED-209's head was modelled on killer whales. Also, Phil Tippet said that the 'mouth' grill was originally the other side up, but this suggested a 'smile'. I really don't think an inverted grill would make ED-209 any less terrifying to confront.
Peacekeeping purposes? How the unholy Hell would military grade missiles fit into 'civilian' peacekeeping tactics? This thing should have been given to the military from the get-go!
Even Millitary does'nt have that much use for the ED-209. Too big to fit into a lot of places, huge target for anyone armed with a .50 cal, too dumb to discriminate against targets, can't navigate stairs and probably rough terrain, etc. The point of ED-209 was it's a multi million dollar piece of shit that does not work.
Urban pacification drone that has trouble navigating stairs, something found plenty in urban environment? Seems legit. In any case Ed209 is my all time favorite robot design. For me the Ed209 scenes were the best parts of the movie as a kid.

Probably something you don't do, but can you do an explanation on Thrax from the movie Osmosis Jones? He's a virus based off of the Scarlet Fever, so you know something interesting to talk about
Size of the auto cannons? Was there a shotgun in place of the 4th auto cannon? The rockets, unguided? What's the Eddie's top speed? Does the series 209 have an onboard power plant or opperate using battery power? Is this the only weapon loadout or can OCP mix things up a bit? If this is the typical loadout, what's the standard ammunition complement? Sensor input? Communication abilities?
The fact that ED-209 was able to somehow be approved and deployed as a traffic cop along with some other civilian roles really makes you think about just how much money OCP had to spend in bribery...

if they ran the program with robocop they could have fixed the programming of it using ed209 as backup for robocop working hand in hand with each other. so robocop wouldnt go into some place with out getting the rest of his backup into harms way using eachother as the go to flack catchers while the human factors of the police to go around not being in the heavy fire like those two would bring to them selfs.

Ed209 deserved a fully functioning cooler looking updated version in a later robocop film it could've even become a rideable mecha unit but the lore never went that way
My fav still lay on ED209. There's a time when i (temporarily) switched to robocop2/robocain due to its cool exoskeleton appearance & brutal nature. But from its schematic, i found he has a strangely very unbalance design. Its legs turned out to be intolerably (4 my taste) small in comparison to its upper torso, make him looks very top heavy. (I mistakes its toys as Super-Deformed ver.). Its dangerous main weapon only consist minigun, 0.50 cal (?)Anti armor shoulder cannon & powerful ramming battery (I ignored the other two light arms). While Ed209 packed more punches w/ three 20mm autocannons, three rocket launchers & a shotgun. Ed209 still my number 1 fav droid from robocop franchise, despite it's AI's incredible stupid.
indeed. ED-209 actually has very good very pleasing aesthetic. Looks cool, like a sports car. Exactly how Dick Jones wanted it "make it look good! I don't care if it doesn't work! It just has to sell!" so of course it looks great. and of course it is stupid. but that combination makes it very charming. I really love ED-209 design, it's timeless. I always daydream that I could have a pilotable version of ED-209: the head dome actually being a room for a pilot to drive this. I want to take my pilot-ed ED-209 to fight the Arachnids in Starship Troopers. .. as for Robocain... i dunno... it's way too utilitarian to my taste, full functionality, but no aesthetic at all. It's ugly.

Kinda remind me to Reaper mech from Dark Colony game, a invaluable asset in combating alien bugs. The Robocain in the other side, as an exoskeleton, it have way too many expossed system, cables etc. Pretty good in defending against small firearms, but definitely defenseless against explosive or armor piercing munitions. The only armor plating seen were on its main torso.
Big ED should've had a shot at being a recurring character and not just for comedic value. Work the programming bugs out, Robo calls him in for demolition jobs when needed haha.
Everyone should go check out the spoof when Mr Kenny aims a pistol at ED209. That clip is hilarious. I was checking online after a few of us were talking about the movie and ED209. We ended up watching a few of the original clips, the hilarious spoof clip and this one. It definitely makes for an interesting laugh at the end of the day talking about this movie and the robots
I actually had an ED-209 toy in my youth, along with a Robocop toy. I am not sure if i still have it. But i still own told toys from that era. What is unknown, as i am not really playing with the stuff.
my favorite Robocop robot is Robocop himself but Ed 209 was cool to, I think it would've been a good sequel if they didn't kill off Bob Norton or Dick Jones in the first movie but rather if Robo cop was successful in the first movie they threaten to fire Dick if he can't work with Bob to fix the programming and design flaws. ironically I don't think there was flaws with Ed 209 but rather the problem was it was purely a machine. look at Robocop himself and at the Ed 209s of the 2019 movie "those aren't improvements by the way it's basically supposed to be the same movie, it's what it ses it is their remake of the first movie". I'll start my exploitation at the remake taking elements from the original draft, in the remake Ed 209 either had onboard pilots or people controlling it from a distance meaning like with Robocop there was a human factor they weren't robots they were exosuites or mecha armor, being made from the same tech only from their line of androids Robocop was an improvement on something that already worked because people actualy controlled those androids on site but merging man and machine was just the ideal marriage of it all instead of Alix Merphy controlling those machines they were used to in the original save a dead man's life and use him as an instrument to uphold the law and in the remake vastly improve the quality of a badly injured man's life and again use him as an instrument to uphold the law, putting a human brain in Ed 209 would've solved their programming problems because there'd be some human influence in that armored shell and being designed as OCP's "new hot military product" they'd have no problem with production, as long as you have military officers with a strong sense of honor and dutie you don't have any shortage of people willing to sign wavers and contracts donating their bodies to military development.

I can't even look at microphones without thinking of Ed 209. Gave me nightmares after that first scene when I saw that as a kid in the theater.
As a kid, I was really into robot-mech sim games such as "Mechwarrior 2" so naturally the ED-209 really resonated with me when I first saw it
ED was based on a Japanese toy that was out at the time of when the film was being developed.
Those scenes in the first movie and the sequels still make me speechless to this day. Cinematography at its best.

MY1987 ED-209 and MY2014 ED-209 are my favorites. Both are just terrifying in motion and the MY2014 version is just an update on that.
then later in the future, ED-209's descendants can be seen as annoying enemy foot soldiers in the Armored Core games.
