  • This is an absolutely incredible rifle. If you like fine rifles you will certainly like this one. I have several designated "deer" rifles, that I really like to use. But if I had to choose just one, heaven forbid, it would be this one for sure.

As an owner of a Ruger No.1 Standard in .308 (built in 2005) I loved this video more than anything I ever saw before about love of a rifle. My darling is just as nice and would probably shoot just as well if I had the expertise of reloading that I see here. I'm a sucker for love stories. Superb, superb visit. Thank you!

That was my first No 1. Loved that rifle. But it was in a house fire and burned up. For deer hunting I suggest something like the Hornady 300 grain hollow point at around 1900-2000 fps. Awesome performance. And for elk sized game the 350 grain Flat Point Hornady is spectacular. Loads such as the 405 grain Rem loads leave a lot to be desired.

I got a Ruger # 1 in 375 at the local pawn shop before the owner got inside 😂. He was very upset because he had lost his job and bills were very hard on him... I asked him how much was he asking for it and he said he doesn't hunt and would 350 be too much ? I called a dispatcher friend of mine and she ran the serial number and it was clear and I adopted it with happy tears in my eyes. It's a very accurate rifle and a little too much for the local deer unless I am using handloads. I've been offered a lot of money for it but it's not going anywhere except for the deer woods and the range.

Good morning Rick. I suppose the rifle you have in .375 is the Tropical model. I wanted to collect every model that the No 1 was made in back years ago. I had a good start on my gun collection when a house fire destroyed it. I had one like yours but I sold it in order to buy another model. All models were easy to find back then and quite affordable compared to today. I intended to replace my Tropical model with one in ,458 but never got around to it. To this day I greatly regret selling my .375. What was I thinking?

Beautiful rifles. I have 2. An "International" model, full stock, in 7x57 just like that one! I scoped it with a Leupold M-8 2.5x "Compact", looks very similar to your scope. I couldn't put a big scope on such a fine, trim rifle.
Looks like we have similar taste! I also jumped on it when they came out. I was always a 7x57mm fan.
    The other #1 is a .45-70.
I will confess that my *favorite* deer rifle is a Savage 99 in .300 Savage, but the #1 in 7x57 is a close 2nd.

I now have just the 7x57 RSI, a 30-06 Light Sporter, and. 7mm Rem Mag in the Medium Sporter. Along with a couple of No3’s. And the great 99, what can I say. I have my share of them also. Actually I have so many “favorites” it is hard to choose which one to use on what day. What a wonderful dilemma!!

@@dennispritchardoutdoors7882 I also hunted elk, mule deer and black bear every year in Montana. I never used the 7x57 for elk but killed a number of mule deer with it and lots of whitetails down in Texas. I have no question it would be a fine elk rifle. It is an absolutely capable cartridge.
My primary hunting rifle was the Savage 99, .300 Savage. My primary elk rifle was a custom Springfield '03, re-barreled in .35 Whelen, and when Remington came out with the .35 Whelen in the Model 760, I jumped all over one.
That said, I killed just as many elk with the little Savage while looking for mule deer. 🤷‍♂ The things you see when you haven't got a .35 Whelen.

You have my dream rifle there Dennis, hope to get one someday myself! Ive been familiar with the 7mm Mauser basically my entire life as a hunter as my dad has an old sporterized military rifle that has had some additional customizing done to it. Ive always loved that rifle and I dont remember dad ever having to shoot a deer a second time.
I went deer hunting with dad from the time I was about 9 and couldnt wait until the time came he would let me shoot his rifle.
Forward many years, I'm now closing in on 53 and this past deer season was my first in the woods in 20 years, largely thanks to my fiance who lit the fire back in me talking about how badly she wanted to go deer hunting.
Just before the season I found a 1920 Spanish Mauser in nice condition at a local pawn shop they had bought from an estate and I picked up for $250. I also just recently picked up a mid 70s Interarms Mark X in great shape at a gun show, obviously both in 7x57!
Loved your video and hope you and your lucky rifle have much continued success.

What a great video - thanks for putting it together. In this day and age when people need "99 kill shots in 2 minutes!" it is refreshing to see a slow quiet video like this with quality instead of speed. I found this clip after searching for Ruger No 1 7x57 as I got my hands on one a few days ago. Will get it home next week. It's not an International but the Sporter will do just fine. Have been wanting one for years and finally found one. Previously owned many many rifles including a Ruger No 1 in 7mm Rem Mag and a Tropical in 416 Rigby.

And a good morning to you Sir from my little farm here in the Southern Appalatchian mountains. I have never been to Sweden, but I view it as the jewel of Europe.
I am very thankful for your thoughtful comments. Your words seem to come from a kindred spirit. Birds of a feather, so to speak.
I am certain that you will throughly enjoy having and using your Sporter No 1 in the great 7x57. The International, Light Sporter, and Medium Sporter are my favorites, but I like all of them. Absolutely awesome rifles. And in this classic rifle I like classic calibers, and you just don’t get any more classic than the 7x57. It is a shame that it never gained the popularity here in the States that it has around the rest of the world. I had, but foolishly sold, a Tropical in .375 H&H, another classic. My Light Sporter is in 30-06, which is certainty a true classic. My Medium Sporter is in a relatively speaking new comer, the great performing 7mm Rem Mag. And it is 60 years old.
I could go on for a time on this great rifle but I am getting too long winded here. Just want to say again how much I appreciate your comments.
      Long live Sweden.

I had some 175 partisions I loaded up for a bear hunt in canada that would clover leaf at 100 yards a guy begged for 2 days to sell him my rifle. I don't own a Ruger N0.1 but I also think they are the most beautiful rifle made. About 30 maybe even 40 years ago a gun store that i visited often had a N0.1 on the used gun rack on the floor chambered in 45-70 and I believe if I remember correctly for 275 bucks. Over a period of time I handled that rifle many times but didn't buy it. What do i need a 45-70 for I asked myself. Finally I decided to buy it but when i got there the gun was gone. Now years later I reload and cast bullets and shoot the heck out of the 45-70. It's my favorite chambering. I will go to my grave regretting not buying that Ruger N0.1!

The trick to getting good and consistent accuracy out of a No 1 is the same thing as in most rifles such as bolt actions. A free floated barrel. I glass bedded the stock to the strut and floated the barrel on my very first No1 long before I had ever heard of anyone doing such a thing. Glassing the stock took a lot of thought and preparation. I held my breath the whole time the glass was curing. But the rifle went from not being accurate at all to a tack driver. Since then I bed and float everyone of them before I even fire a shot through them. Many of them had way too much stock pressure on the barrel. I have seen a couple of ways to deal with the problem but my way woks great for me.

If you think the Tropical in 45-70 kicks , let me tell you something to try. You did not say what sort of a load you were using in the No 1. Factory loads are mostly super mild loads with very low chamber pressures. Very easy recoil. But I fixed that!!!!
The No 1 is so strong the 45-70 can be loaded up to .458 Win Mag velocities. Which I did. And that in the Medium Sporter , which lighter than the Tropical. It would kick you into the middle of next week!!!!
Needless to say I eventually loaded it down to Marlin 1895 pressure. Then it still kicked but quite tolerable.

Welcome aboard Sir. You will enjoy your rifle greatly I am sure. Most No 1’s benefit greatly from free floating the barrel. The RSI is a bit difficult to do but it can be done. Yours may perform wonderful without the free floating.
As to case life, it varies greatly. Neck sizing only will increase case life but it creates problems. My suggestion is to full length resize but only set the shoulder back 2 thousandths. You can even go for a 1 thousandths set back, or even a zero setback in the No 1 which will give you your maximum case life without the problems of neck sizing only. But I like to set the shoulder back the 2 thousandths. That insures easy chambering under hunting conditions.
If you will watch my videos on reloading I explain the set back method. Hope this helps and thank you for watching, commenting, and subscribing.

Good morning Sir. Glad to see you recognize a beautiful rifle when you see one! Seriously, it really is a beautiful, and great handling rifle. The 7x57 , or 7mm Mauser, is a world class hunting caliber and is readily available world wide. It is very popular in most of the world but was never in great favor in this country. No Metric cartridge was popular in the USA including the 7x57, until Remington came out with their 7mm Rem Mag. Now days the 7mm caliber is quite popular here. The 7x57 is also the parent cartridge of a whole host of cartridges including the 30-06, .243, .308, 7-08, and the list goes on and on. The cartridge had a loyal following but nothing like the 30-06 had, which was its main competitor. As a matter of fact the 30-06 was developed for our military because we were out gunned by the Spanish using the7x57. To the best of my knowledge I have never fired a factory loaded round through my 7x57, as I am a confirmed hand loader. Brass was never hard to find. A friend has two 7x57’s and shoots strictly factory ammo. He had no trouble finding ammo. That is until Obama started the present ammo shortage, and Biden continues with, it like most ammo can take awhile to find sometimes. Right now I am having trouble finding bullets to reload all of my rifles with. Gone are the days of well stocked shelves of shooting supplies thanks to a few Democrats.
I suggest you look up the 7x57 on Google and UA-cam. It has a long and distinguished career.
      Thank you for your comments.

Would prefer the .308 in a 20" barrel rifle. Seems to me the 7x57, like the .30-06, is best with a 24" barrel.

    • @dennispritchardoutdoors7882
      @dennispritchardoutdoors7882  Рік тому

But the .308 was not invented in 1892. It has not earned the reputation of the old war horse. It has no nostalgia. It is a throughly modern cartridge and a pretty good one at that. I bought a .308 as soon as Winchester chambered a rifle for it. Killed many deer with it. It works just fine but it is plain vanilla.
There is just something very special , to me anyway, about carrying an old tried and true caliber. I guess you could call it nostalgia, or even romance. The .308 is the Grandchild of the 7x57. I prefer the old man. He can hold his own with the best of them.
When you said “best” I suppose you were alluding to velocity. But you missed my whole point. That point being carrying a short , handy , well balanced , stunningly beautiful rifle. A classic rifle. And then having it chambered in a classic caliber. Trying to match barrel length to the most efficient cartridge for that length, just to make sure all the powder was burned, and perhaps get a few more feet per second velocity was not my goal. In other words I was not looking for the most technically correct combination of rifle-cartridge . I was looking for what I “liked” the most, and that would put the meat in the freezer just as certainly as would the theoretical “best.”
Best is hard to define. Best for me might not be the best for you. Which is perfectly fine. And the deer will never know the difference. And neither will the 1108 elephants that WDM Bell killed with mostly the little 7x57. Or the 800 Cape Buffalo he took with it. Or all the game taken with it since 1892.
As good as the .308 is I highly doubt that it will ever gain the world wide reputation for excellence as has my beloved old war horse, the great 7x57.
Thank you for both watching and taking the time to comment.
