During the run of the Friends show, Monica had mentioned that she affords the apartment because she inherited it from her Grandmother. It was rent-controlled at $200 dollars a month.
agreed abd chandlier mentioned it in the last episode to his new babies that rent was a freakin steal
🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
Any friends fans knows this bit of trivia.
I was literally running to the comments section to spread my knowledge! I wish we all had rent control.
The real life Monica inherited something like 200 million from her parents so that plus starring on a hit tv-series wouldn't hurt either
The apartment was her grandmother's, so yeah, rent stabilized.
But wasnt it hers? I thought she inherent it, if it hers why would she pay rent???
@@vmvm949 no actually she was subletting the apartment from her grandmother illegally but the apartment didn't belong to her grandmother in fact she was in violation of the rent stabilization law and almost got evicted when treeger threatened to tell the landlord after joey pissed him off.
@@bestmoments1344 oh i didn't knew, i was certain it belonged to her grandmother and she inherent it
Yes, and I remember they say that her grandmother lived in Florida
Of course the Friends apartment was rent stabilized. That was a running theme throughout the show that it was rented it in her grandmother's name and they were trying to avoid being found out so they could keep affording to live there.
I was just about to say this.... it was mentioned in the very last show aswell when Monica asked Ross if he wanted to move in because the apartment was still in their grandmothers name
How can Ryan not know this?! (hehe)
Which is why Joey accidently revealed this to the super and then had to teach him dance.
@@mm-eu8sg I guess Ryan doesnt watch Friends. UNSUBSCRIBE LOL
He literally said that it was a well known theory that Monicas Apartment was rent stabilized...
Ugh Friends fans are always in your face when it comes to sharing their "important" knowledge
I love this series! How much do you think Miranda Priestly’s townhouse cost in The Devil Wears Prada? Also, what about Andy and Nate’s apartment as well?
Love this suggestion!
Can we throw in the cost for the Magazine to operate out of that building too?
GREAT CALL! We're on it! 💪
Honestly I wanted to ask same question to Ryan. The Devil Wears Prada is an amazing movie and Miranda Priestly’s townhouse is literally more amazing than anything else… lol
@@RyanSerhant thank you so much! I love all of your content! 🤩
Love it! Maybe talk about some old New York apartments that have some interesting history connected to it. (I.e, people would have stairs in the apartment that still exists that go to a basement or a tunnel that was once an underground gambling spot or connected to other things that people did not know). Fun facts. 😁
I love this! We are currently working on a show for Listed about these kinds of things stay tuned!
@@RyanSerhant and what about showers in the kitchen!!??
I like down to earth, relaxed, not trying to sell sell sell Ryan! Casual clothes make him look younger too!
Ryan, got 2 real estate moments for you. Jennifer Aniston’s apartment in “The Morning Show” and Cameron Diaz’s house in “The Holiday”.
You’re a great guy to learn from. You imbue everything with goodness. I like these kind of videos, also your life vlogs are just super interesting
Max! I appreciate you for watching! We will keep going 💪
Love this, do more of it.
My freind's sister inherited the parents' house in California. Both parents died of cancer in the house then her boyfriend committed suicide in it. It took her a year to sell it when the neighborhood was selling in days with multiple bids
brutal. Thats insane
Two of some of my favorite things combined, Ryan Serhant and Friends! Keep up the great content!
Next you should do Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment
Yes, I would like to see more in this series. Where else am I going to get educated and entertained?!
I'm curious about John Cassavetes & Mia Farrow's grand apartment at the Dakota, in the mid-to-late '60s, in Rosemary's Baby. Could a struggling actor and stay-at-home wife really have afforded it? I know that back then the Dakota wasn't the be-all-and-end-all it is today (not to mention, the site of John Lennon's death), but still -- that was a huge apartment. I have read that the building was in danger of being torn down, and that the success of the movie saved it, but I'm not sure if that's really true. If you could shed any light on that, I'd very much appreciate it.
Maybe, idea, what about Billions. Boby's penthouse, Chucks townhouse... Etc? I think that there is so many properties, that it could take whole episode. 🙃
There’s a difference between rent stabilized and rent controlled. You speak of rent stabilization making NYC apartments cheap, but that’s rent control.
Monica’s apartment isn’t hers, it’s her grandmothers.
They actually mention the rent control on Friends. The apartment belonged to here grandmother
MORE! Seinfeld apartment and the White Collar apartment would be pretty dope.
As I remember, it was Monica's grandmother's apartment😉
only true fans of Friends know how she can afford that apartment
Finally! So glad you addressed it. I've been thinking bout how friends could afford those apartments for years! :D
Monica's apartment rent was indeed stabilised (inheritance from her grandmother). It was mentioned in the show several times. And Chandler was making good money to even live alone (if he wanted to). Phoebe's apartment was also her grandmother's.
Monica doesn't have a landlord, she only pays the minimum fees for lighting in the hall, snow removal out front, and removal of garbage
Monica's appartement is owned by her grandmother, she's not paying rent. You should watch FRIENDS again !
Yes, yes and more yes to this!! 👌🏿 SATC comes to mind...plus a slew of other TV shows for this kind of segment!
how did people die in that flood? Were they locked in a basement or something
I can say officially that the friends apartment is rent controlled. I forget who the relative was of Monica’s but it was rent stabilized.
Now chandler’s and Joeys apartment would have been a nice Segway lol Smaller apartment but still a 2 bedroom
Loved this! Ryan... What about Charlotte York's stunning apartment she got in her divorce in sex and the city??
2 of those 13 people that died during irene in ny lived across the street from me in queens in their basement
Love this! More like this please. P.S. Friends is the best ❤️
Hey Ryan, I ABSOLUTELY loved this video! I am a Real Estate Agent and I am all about learning and growing. Today you shared with us a little of your knowledge that means a lot for me and for many other agents like me. I am a huge fan of you and I appreciate all your videos but the content of this video is particularly special for me ❤️ THANK YOU FOR SHARING 🙏
In Australia, you put a deposit down. Then get an inspection (pest and building usually). Then, if something fails on the test, you can cancel out of your contract no questions asked. :)
Monica is subletting the apartment from a family member, its constantly mentioned that it’s been rent controlled for like 50 years ore something, so it would be interesting to know what they actually did pay knowing that information
what about apartments in Sex and the city?
Hi Ryan, on this sad day, I have a personal request to do. It would be awesome if you can describe your 9/11 of 20 years ago. Were you living in NYC already? What are your thoughts? If you want you can share your memories. I understand this can be too private, so I will appreciate if you don’t.
Thank you for your videos, you are awesome man, please never change!
🇺🇸❤️
So what's to stop the owner of a rent stabilized apartment from saying he wants to move into the apartment himself, so he's not renewing the lease?
i would love to see some of the apartments from suits like Harvey specters place
Wait … he didn’t even answer the question? How much would the apartment rent for today?
new series sounds like a win!
YESSSS! Im glad you liked it! We will do more! ❤️
Rent stabilization ≠ rent control, and I'm not sure how someone who works in real estate doesn't distinguish between them in a video about this. The person with a super-cheap $1300 UWS apartment is almost definitely a rent-controlled apartment. Rent-stabilized apartments are common in New York (I've only lived in rent-stabilized apartments! I moved here less than 6 years ago!) and can absolutely be nice apartments. Lots of people just don't know their rights and never bother checking to see if their apartment is stabilized or not (the landlord's certainly not interested in informing you.)
How about chuck and Wendy’s apartment in Brooklyn in Billions? Always been curious about that one
HIMYM: Marshall and Lily KNOW AN ARCHITECT and they didn't get him to look at the place first???
The rent back in the 90's was actually affordable into greedy slumlords came around.
Thank you, Ryan for this informational video in giving detailed information on occupancy, rent stabilized apartments, and market rate.
Glad it was helpful!
Super cool video. Love the new set. As a home owner I completely understand occupancy law. As a person who's lived in multiple locations I can also understand how it's complete bullshit. It's racist, favors the rich, and directly defines what a family structure has to look like. Kindof a topic that's fallen out of vogue but with home prices continuing to rise we might see it come into the limelight again.
From my understanding is that Monica’s Grandma owned the apartment.
Can you talk about historical NYC buildings like the one featured in “Only Murder in the Building”? Love the pop culture related RE content👍
Affordable housing, rent control, rent stabilized, etc.. Doesn't that mean you get periodic checks from poli-sci majors?
Loved this video! I know it focused on houses/apartments from pop culture, but the info you gave was very informative. I'd be super interested in a renters guide video from you. Hearing you talk about all the illegal basement apartments and over occupied units has made me question every listing I've seen.
It's actually well known that Monica's grandmother owned the apartment so yes, it was rent stabilized
But you never answered your question: how much would the friends apartment rent for? This video is mis labeled.
Dutch people when hearing "Marshall, your apartment is crooked!" Be like; yeah yours aren't??
*Ryan. Puleeeeeeze do: SINGLE. WHITE. FEMALE.*
*the massiveness of that apartment has haughted my NYC apartment dreams for YEARS!!!* *OH. and the Rosemary's Baby apt. or anything in The Dakota. ok thanx, bye!!!* 🎥🔪😍🗽🏢
I like some of your stuff (thick Russian accent) ps how long does it take each morning to put your bracelets on?
1:52 way to miss the landlord's obligations/peter's grievances in this scene... do you maybe have a bit of a bias?
Pity there’s no subtitles for the deaf people watching this video
Like the series. Kill the background music while you're talking (it's really distracting w/ headphones).
I always thought that Monica's apartment was so cheap because the apartment was in her family for a long time. I thought the same of Phoebe's place too. That she shared it with her grandmother, so I assumed it was rent stable when Phoebe lived there by herself after her grandmother passed. Considering she doesn't have a high paying job like the others do.
Love the topic! I get a lot of these questions as a Realtor in Colorado also. Kudos.
Can you guys do Will & Grace's apartment and Fraiser's apartment in Seattle?
More of this please Ryan. Content diversity is king!
European here. Why would a landlord need to hire a lawyer to evict a delinquent tenant? The tenant KNOWS the conditions and they know they have not paid in time. And a smart landlord will have a governing law and jurisdiction clause, and most importantly, STRICT LIABILITY clause. If you do not pay, the evictions stands. No lawyer needed.

Please can you do a video about the current building safety crisis in the UK? Would be great to raise global awareness about the scandal affecting me and hundreds and thousands of leaseholders x
She wasnt just a chef, she was an executive chef and sometimes owned her own restaurant.
It was her grandmother’s rent controlled.
"Tell all your friends "
When he said it ,
I really felt like my meatball farting when i about to take a bite.
Ryan and his team come up with the best video ideas 💡 Real estate in pop culture!?so cleverrrr
Just trying to push the boundaries any chance we get 😉 Thanks for watching!
Hi Ryan. Really nice episode. Could You, please make similar video about costs of living in US? I heard theory that when You buy a house in US for some amount of money You will spend the same amount in 5-10 years in bills and taxes (depending on state). What I mean is - if I buy a house in LA for a $1m, do I need to have another $1m on my account just to cover next 5 years of living costs? I also heard that many rich people leaving US (or state, especially California) because of those costs.

Do the Nanny!
I mean the Sheffield residence.
Love this series, Ryan!
I love this vlog it is informative and so many things you need to learn if you want to live in NYC. Thanks Ryan!
How much would the rent cost for the sex and the city characters?
Pretty sure the occupancy has to do with how quickly you can evacuate the whole building too.
You know what would make a great video too, is what different condos you can get for a million dollars or less in a in New York City sale. Or how forclosures work in New York City, for first time home buyers.
The apartment from the movie Ghost? Always wondered how much that cost for them to rent! Such a lovely apartment
Would love to see your desk setup and your EDC :D Keep the awesome content coming
This is awesome! Keep these going Ryan!! Love your vids :)
We 100% will! Thanks for watching!
This video is awesome, it's cool to see you break this down for us.
The West Village then was not what it is today, as you know well. It really was a low rent district much too close to the smelly, noisy meat packing district (as it was then.)
How has your morning routine changed since the video you posted 2 years ago?
how much would the rent cost in the mid-90s/early 2000s since Friends took place during that period?
This was my favorite video of yours ever. Really great until you talked about the people that just died in NYC. We know you're a narcissist but this time you truly showed how you don't care about anyone but yourself and yours. You talked about those people like it was an awesome story you tell after you watched a movie.
Your coldness is scary. Not everything is for personal gain or personal amusement.
I totally agree
Monica rented it from her grandmother she said in the serie! That's why she could afford it to live there. Great video btw:)
Do gossip girls apartments
We gotta know how much Gossip Girl homes cost...
Lets talk about Carrie's apartment in sex and the city!!!! Another myth that needs to be debunked!
Monica- is it a rent controlled apartment in her grandmother’s name.
I love the new set and I just love how you teach, I am saving up to buy your program, right now I am taking classes to become an agent, My question to you, how do you find agents that would be a great series, also do you have a firm in VA. I would love to join your team once I take my state exam this has been a dream of mines, I have been watching you for so long and I have learned so much from you, my dream is to become part of your team
I personally don't care about if anyone died in the property unless it qualifies me 4 a discount
Im sure this has been said - maybe even in the video I just started it - but Monica's apartment is rent controlled through something with her aunt
Love this new way of you sharing with us, it being super informative in a fun intriguing approach. 👊🏼
walter sh*t: "hey, junior here thinks he's going to get a rent-controlled apartment!"
entire diner: *erupts in laughter*
remember the movie "Big Daddy" ? Sonny's apt in that movie was huge! and he was a toll booth worker with some settlement money, how much would that have really cost?
More of this Ryan!
How i met your mother; when marshal buys a house over the weekend and at night to avoid the nasty plant in the neighborhood..
Nice episode Ryan 👏🏽... for a next pop culture episode maybe you can provide for example listening princess of those apartments from different TV shows.. I'll always liked all your content but this one was different and fresh.. awesome.
Video starts at 10:25
Haha. Stood up and straight onto your phone. We all do this now. Sad. But true.
7-10k monthly was his answer
I've always wondered about this for the apartments in Sex and the City!!
Need to do how much the gossip girl apartments and penthouses would sell for
Noted! Adding it to the list
More. Ryan, are you filming the next season of MDLNY? Is Serhant expanding to LA to maybe push yourself on that series?
