This song was played on the organ at Betty Grable's funeral in 1973 when she died of lung cancer at age 56. Luminaries who attended the funeral were Betty's ex-husband Harry James(they were married for 22 years & had 2 daughters) Dorothy Lamour,Shirley Booth,Mitzi Gaynor,Johnnie Ray,Don Ameche, Cesar Romero,George Raft,Alice Faye & Dan Dailey. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS WONDERFUL SONG !
Harry James blew his trumpet to sound like a saxophone, and Helen Forest sang such rich tones with depth, making this a beautiful song to pass with flying colors the test of time
I am so grateful that this color footage exists. Harry James and Helen Forrest at the height of their careers. It is a snapshot of what was popular in America during the 1940's. Yes, this was Hollywood, but it did reflect peoples tastes of the time. And I hate to say, in that respect, it was a much better era...
I agree with both of you, it sounded great, and it was such a wonderful era. Only of WWII or the great depression never happened... we might be in a place like it
while i definitely agree that it was a better era for music and things like fashion, the era did also have many problems, including racism and sexism, which we still haven’t completely escaped.
@@marianasoler6371 You're right. But I'm highlighting the good things. All era's have their good and bad points. Because there were bad things that existed then, does that taint everything? I hope not.
Even as a child I was interested in music from decades before I was born. I still love the music from 20s, 30s, 40s. I love the big orchestras. There were so many of them those days, big popular music orchestras are hard to find. I am from the Netherlands, and we only have one or two and they are struggling.
Exactly my thoughts .. growing up and appreciating and exploring all the music that was their prior to my birth was one of the best experience you could possibly have. It put everything in perspective. It still does.. it really does.
This was another number one hit by James. I love the big band music of The Greatest Generation. It provided morale support for our fighting men and helped win WW2.
The lovely Helen Forrest gone 20 years. Still one of the best girl singers of the WWII era. I wish I was back there to listen to her and the band! They must have been something to see so long ago.
Saw Helen in person many times. A bubbly lady with a great laugh. As a singer she simply was unparalleled. She had everything: A great voice, faultless intonation and rhythm, crystal clear diction and great warmth and sympatico. She was the most sought-after singer in the band business. Her career extended decades past the big band era and she worked until nearly the end of her life. I saw one of her last appearances, at the Ravinia Festival outside Chicago, and she was as terrific as ever.
She survived a tough childhood and she was also ahead of her time in being willing to cross the color line in her professional life. Behind that beautiful voice and face was a woman of true character. Rest in peace Ms. Forrest.
In a dream the strangest and the oddest things appear And what insane and silly things we do Here is what I see before me, vividly and clear As I recall it, you were in it, too I had the craziest dream last night, yes I did I never dreamt it could be Yet there you were, in love with me I found your lips close to mine so I kissed you And you didn't mind it at all When I'm awake such abreak never happens How long can a gal go on dreaming? If there's a chance that you care Then, please, say you do, Baby Say it and make my craziest dream come true
Not sure but I think I read the movie bigwigs didn't think Helen was pretty enough to have close up shots of her. Anyone with info on that? Strangely, she was just as beautiful as her voice! Harry's not bad either!!
What a record. The two of them will continue to live on in popular music history - Helen Forrest the quintessential female band singer and Harry James, to my way of thinking the greatest trumpeter I've ever heard.
This is from Springtime in the Rockies 1942. This movie had a great cast. I was sorry that beautiful Betty Grable didn't get one solo song in this film. There's a radio version of this with her and Dick Powell. Betty marrying Harry was the biggest mistake of her life. I believe he's the one that got her chain smoking and drinking martinis.
I had that "crazy" dream 57 years ago and it's been a dream come true ever since. Carol and I have been "one" since 1965 and Like the song "wishes are dreams that come true".
He was a great horn player! I was not born in his time but wish I was. The music from that era will never died. Harry died 37 years ago today but the music he left behind is still very much alive. thank You Harry! I love this song and the way Helen sings it.
This was one of the first songs I remember listening to in my grandparents home in Richmond Hill, NY. They used to roll up the carpet and dance to this. What a lovely memory and as a kid I thought it was so corny. A beautiful song and still enjoyable. This was when they wrote songs that you could make love to, if even just by dancing. Thanks for posting. By the way, the movie and Betty Grable are in technicolor gorgeous.
Yeh, a sweet and painful nostalgia. We had this record and I played it a lot as a kid. A real classic, one of the great American songs of the big band era. ❤
This is my magical night song and video. So real and so unreal...Harry James was my uncle' s favorite musician, he was a professional trumpeter and and band leader, too, here in Finland. And I simply love Helen ♥️
I see the sax section (2a; 2t; 1b) all double on clarinets, well, 4 seem, to I think; a bit hard to see, but I think(?) one of the tenor sax players then doubles on bass clarinet maybe? Can anyone else verify? I've been trying to locate the original score for this arrangment - no luck so far; only able to find a generic re-arrangement for a more standard big band - it's not bad, but I've been looking for the original layout with the french horn and strings. Great piece. I also wonder why there're so few Helen Ward video around ...? (She sang often with Benny Goodman).
Let's raise a glass to Harry James and Betty Grable! Today would have been their 75th wedding anniversary! God Bless Them Both!!!!! He died 35 years ago today. She died on July 2, 1973 and was buried on this day. Sad but from all accounts they never stop loving each other.
How I wish that I was born in this beautifully nostalgic era of big bands, moonlight gardens like in this video….gliding across the dance floor with Mary Nash in my arms….
Without a doubt Harry James' bands had the most sumptuous sound, and Helen's voice is colorful like her male counterpart Sinatra.Check out their work together on Harry James in Hi Fi.
We must all have had Helen Forrest's crazy dream at one time or another. Interesting that this great tune has such a long and lovely instrumental prelude; I guess everyone's attention span was longer back then.
I just feel like crying. This is toooooooooo precious. Where do we go from here, what is left for us. How can one survive in world without class, romance and beauty, please do tell me.
While modern music production methods allow meticulous control of each track, played by musicians who might not even be in the recording studio at the same time, there was a certain magic when great musicians played together.
Thanks so much for this clip; wonderful to see how the so-well-known song was introduced, and if memory serves me, his recorded version carried the identical arrangement.
Great story here. Helen Forrest was a very much in demand singer, who before going to work for Harry James had several offers. She chose the James offer even though it was for the least money. Why? Well she just happened to have a big crush on Harry, and was very probably singing this directly to Mr. James. Unfortunately for Helen, Harry had a stronger interest in Betty Grable, who he would eventually marry.
Funny that you noticed that! She was one of the five greatest female singers of the 40's but was considered not "hollywood pretty" enough for leads,, unlike many of her contempories. She was dating Harry James at the time though, but was kttc (kicked to the curb) to make way for his to be- lifelong love Betty Grable. Something else funny, if they hadn't cut when they did, Helen would have run right into the guy with the violin!
Man, Fox just did not know how to shoot musicals (like MGM for example). Could poor Helen Forrest have been more lost in the forest than in this number? It's almost like they were trying to hide her in the crowd... Sheesh.
Harry Warren & Mack Gordon, Very romantic melody and lyrics. Their other song is just as romantic --- I Know Why And So Do You. It's here on UA-cam in real stereo by Glen Miller.
Yo, Gabriel, re your flame of sumac64: Go directly to the nearest dictionary and look up "facetious" and "sarcasm" - then come back here and apologize to sumac for letting your rhetorical shortcomings get your butt wound too tightly. BTW, my dictionary of usage says that facetiousness is sarcasm with a smile and sarcasm is facetiousness with fangs.
That being said, Harry and Helen are both wonderful. Harry James always had the sweetest trumpet tone, and could still play hot without being harsh. His vibrato and embellishments were wonderful, too. I learned of Helen Forrest from her work with Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. This song was her big break outside of the typical 8 bar vocal refrains that were common for band singers back then.
Love this song and the movie it comes from Springtime in the Rockies. July 5th marked the 40th anniversary of Harry James death and the 70th anniversary of his marriage to Betty Grable.
This was my dad's favorite song by his favorite singer. He just passed away and it will be played at his funeral. He was 96. RIP Dad.
This song was played on the organ at Betty Grable's funeral in 1973 when she died of lung cancer at age 56. Harry James blew his trumpet to sound like a saxophone, and Helen Forest sang such rich tones with depth, making this a beautiful song to pass with flying colors the test of time
Harry was Simply the Best... (I have many of his CD's)
Harry James has imitators to this day, but they don't hold a candle to his talent
Harry made his trumpet sing like a human voice. People were drawn to it's emotional truth and vibrancy
Helen Forrest had a beautiful voice and Harry James could really blow that trumpet! There are no songs like this today.
I am 19 and I completely agree with you. I have been in Love with 40s/50s Hollywood. I love the music, actresses, fashion and cars.
I agree with both of you, it sounded great, and it was such a wonderful era. Only of WWII or the great depression never happened... we might be in a place like it

Happy Birthday Harry James! Happy 103 years young! You were one of the best trumpet players ever! Man you are missed!!!!!
Even as a child I was interested in music from decades before I was born. I still love the music from 20s, 30s, 40s. I love the big orchestras. There were so many of them those days, big popular music orchestras are hard to find. I am from the Netherlands, and we only have one or two and they are struggling.
When I was a kid in the 40s my mum played her records from 20 & 30s, I heard those songs as well as the 40s.
Exactly my thoughts .. growing up and appreciating and exploring all the music that was their prior to my birth was one of the best experience you could possibly have. It put everything in perspective. It still does.. it really does.
I began listening to this music at age 9.
You can share memories with me Sir! I am 88 and still rocking! Those were. Indeed, the "Days"!
I hope you still are rocking Mary!
I may not have been around yet but I know great music when I hear it. Nothing like this today.
Are you still alive?
I was fortunate to see him live back in the ‘50s.
This was another number one hit by James. I love the big band music of The Greatest Generation. It provided morale support for our fighting men and helped win WW2.

Such romantic lyrics.
what a great player he was! Harry James died 32 years ago today. Thanks for all the good music Harry!
Hit #1 on Feb 13 1943 according to Billboard
One of the greatest WW2 songs. Wonder how many homesick soldiers heard this one and dreamed of home.
A LOT
How true - WW2 Vet
Not sure but I think I read the movie bigwigs didn't think Helen was pretty enough to have close up shots of her. Anyone with info on that? Strangely, she was just as beautiful as her voice! Harry's not bad either!!
the best of the big-band singers
I agree, Earl. She was the best of the "girl" singers. I always like Ray Eberle too.
U betcha !!!
seriously this is magic!
What a record. The two of them will continue to live on in popular music history - Helen

the greatest trumpeter I've ever heard.
Agree, all. The word is MAGIC.
Simplemente genial esta joya musical de una era dorada en seguir gustando.
Yeh, a musical gem from a golden time. There's a world in this three and a-half minutes.
Probably the most beautiful song I ever heard. 🥺😭
Wonderful ! thank you
Enjoyed traveling the musical past with superb artists as Goodman, Shaw and what a combo with Helen Forest! Thanks for the memories. Lezz.
Remembering Harry James, one of the BEST trumpet players of all time. 38 years gone but never never forgotten.
Harry's horn, Helen's voice, great orchestra and fantastic song==Unbeatable video

o m gosh....with love potion music like this, it's no wonder there was a baby boom! They sure knew sweet music and romance~what a generation
Superb! Back from the days when "music" was truly "Music"! Thank you for putting this online!
Somebody PLEASE post a better HD version! This is so beautiful!
I had that "crazy" dream 57 years ago and it's been a dream come true ever since. Carol and I have been "one" since 1965 and Like the song "wishes are dreams that come true".
My new favorite song

What fabulous music, I could listen to this forever!
Remembering one of the best band singers who ever lived. Helen Forrest nobody sings this song like you!
This song was played at Betty Grable's funeral on the Church organ. She was also married to Harry James.
Harry could play anything and Helen was simply the best big band girl singer ever. Great times.
I wasn't for sure, but I knew there surely had to be a version performed by Dick Hames.
Was this from the movie Saratoga trunk? 😅This was a big part of the music of my youth im almost 93 years old now
Such a beautiful voice, from one of the greatest of the Big Band era.
Helen Forrest was a beauty and had a beautiful voice. Her voice was still great in her 60s!! What a talent!!
A beautiful song and what a rendition i love this Great
Music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Mack Gordon. Visit us at Harry Warren Fans on Facebook.

A TRANSCENDENT EXPERIENCE!!!"
Gotta add this movie to my collection, it has great music and Carmen Miranda, can't loose
Tears. Dad loved this.
Yeh, a sweet and painful nostalgia. We had this record and I played it a lot as a kid. A real classic, one of the great American songs of the big band era. ❤
love this song!
il n'y. a que les classiques qui survivent au temps et aux années c'est un plaisir de les écouter c'est nostalgique
Louis Armstrong would give him a run for the money, though. :) Love them both!
To all you pro wrestling fans out there (like myself): This was the #1 song in the USA when Antonio Inoki came into the world (February 20, 1943).
Now that's real music.

Ah... Such dreamy music *sighs*
It’s no Tay Swift but it’s ok.
WGNJMN ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉Daddy on right.😢
Have loved this song since I was 20. 45 now.
The best big band/swing song.

a dream, at Dad's, while the rain blew all night, and the ferries were cancelled.
Where are the tats and piercings? They look naked without the body "art". And what are they wearing? No sweats and T shirts? No class back then.
@tomnnan "Love potion music," lol. What an apt description!
What a beautiful song. It's one of those tunes that gets stuck in your head! LOL Thanks for posting!

Marvellous
The Maestro Harry James 'carried' every movie he was in. Sometimes you forget what the story line is all about and listen to that golden horn instead.
From What year is this?
