Super setup. I love how in-depth you go. Would you consider doing another planning video where you e.g. go into detail of how you plan a long work project, how you hold yourself accountable, how you make sure to reach endpoints etc.? I'm a PhD student, too, and right now it works for me to make a to do-list for all the remaining 21 months and for each month put in the things I want and need to do. Then I use the Hobonichi to write my tasks in for the next day. I really adore your videos, the clear light you use so we can actually see what's on the page etc. Thanks. :)
Lucidarius00 Thank you so much for watching!! What is the topic of your Ph.D.? I am always happy to get to know other Ph.D. students :) I will definately do a video on how I plan my projects in the future!!
Thank you! That was a really useful overview of the Cousin and lots of different ways to use it. I'm currently trying to figure out what I could use next year's diary for vs how *I* will actually use it. Some people talk about the Cousin as if it is so huge, but the Techo just looks much too small for me. Your video reassured me that the Cousin is probably just right. And I really want everything in one book - EVERYTHING! planning, record keeping, journaling and pictures. I just have to train myself to actually put it all in there ;) and then I need to figure out how to make it look at beautiful as yours.
Jo Blackford Thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for watching the video! I really don't think the Cousin is too big, I used to have A5 planners for years and they never felt too big or heavy to carry around. I have recently moved into an A6 size hobonichi (with the weekly booklet because I need the week on two pages view), because I don't need as much space right now. But I still love the cousin very much and I am sure you will love it as a planner!!!
OMG I've been looking at the Hobonichi planners for some time now but haven't bought one because it's quite expensive. But after seeing a couple of artist friends using it to do their doodles and stuff, I REALLY WANT ONE. This video was really informative and I'm so glad you mentioned the paper quality. Paper quality is a MUST for me. Lol Thanks for making this video! : )
Tolles Video!
I love your setup! Thanks so much for sharing it. I feel just the same as you - after experiencing the Hobonichi Cousin, it's totally impossible to go back to any other planner!
fantastic video! I'm visiting Japan at the end of the year and have been thinking about getting a cousin from the hobonichi store for 2018, this video has made up my mind, thank you!
I love how you have your Hobonichi set up! It is so organized and also so fun to look at! Can I ask where you got the cute little monster stamps? They are adorable!
dousing? I think that means cousin. Love auto correct. Again congrats. Love your hobonichi. I'm jealous actually because I don't do much of anything with mine and I would not know how to do a video. So, I just watch everyone else.
Great video! Your Hobo seems to be the right amount of planner and art journal. For your daily pages... do you lay those out first by sectioning them off? Or write things together but leave room to add your colors and stamps? How do you manage that?
I love your video. It really convinced me that a Hobonichi is the right choice for me. I've been unhappy with my Filofax for a while now and everything I like about Filofax the Hobonichi does have too. What I'm wondering is, do you know when the website releases new designs? I'm not completely happy with the choices available right now. The blue one you have sadly doesn't seem to be available right now. Before I make such a big purchase I wanna be sure about everything :)
+TheLeamazing Hi, I am so sorry for taking this long to answer your question! The 2016 covers are now available. I must admit that I didn't care too much for the covers that they are selling for next year. But maybe you will find something that you like? :)
I'm always afraid that I'll ruin it by watercoloring directly on the paper, so I usually apply gesso first and that also gives it an amazing texture. So it's a win win lol
horsygall Great idea :D I love how painting directly onto the pages doesn't add too much bulk to the planner, but I understand your hesitation :). I have never used gesso as a watercolor base (I either use the tomoe river paper or nice water color paper)... does it create a surface similar to good quality watercolor paper?
Hello! Great video! Thanks for sharing! Question...what are the little stickers and the folder you showed with the fat cat-looking characters on them??? I love those! Thanks!
Love this setup! Watching this makes me more excited about getting the cousin next year! Just a question, is it light enough to carry around with you during the day? Is it portable enough?
Thank you so much! Well, it is lighter than my A5 filofax was, but it is still quite heavy of course... I carry it around in my handbag and I am fine with it, but I am used to carrying really heavy bags :D
Heeey i totally love your spread! i was thining of getting a hobonichi cousin for 2018 and i was looking for a spread that was decorated but not over decorated and also not "only" bujo style! i really like how you used these cute kawaii potato bunnies :D! i was thinking of what pen i should use when i want to combine it with my mildliners and was wondering , since youre using the fixion is there any smudge at all or do you have to wait for it to dry?
Tolles Setup!
I love this planner and your setup! I think I want to get one next year! It first seemed to me that the pages were too thin, but it also seems that the writings don't seep. I've just watched another video in which the person bought a spring version instead of one starting from January because the spring version has Japanese quotes in it, but it seems in your video that the one starts from January also has Japanese quotes instead of English quotes, is that right? I really want Japanese quotes but I also want it starts on January... which is what I've been wondering about
Rachel You Hey there! Yes, the paper is amazing. Even my broad tip fountain pen and my watercolors don't seep through the pages. The only thing that bleeds through are alcohol based markers (such as copics) and certain stamping inks. The only hobonichi that doesn't have Japanese quotes is the A6 sized (regular size) English version, called the "Hobonichi Planner". That one is only available with a January start and has a black cover (the Japanese versions all have cream colored covers). :) I hope that helps?
palestblue Thank you for the explanation! That helps~ I also want to know how long does it take to get to the U.S., if I reserve in September? Do you think it will come before December 18?
Rachel You You are welcome :). I have never ordered a Hobonichi to a US address, so I can't say for sure, I am sorry :(. But I believe if you order at the beginnng of September, it should definately arrive before Dec 18th
+palestblue Yes, if you ever come again, would love to meet you. It sounds like you travel quite a lot. You are so organized, I wonder how you do it all: work, study for Phd, travel, journal!!!!!!!!!!
+Diane Rabinovich Unfortunately I don't have my A6 hobonichi planner any more... I went back to 6 ring binders and only use my hobonichi as a journal... sorry!
+tracy turner I draw the outline with a fine tip archival ink pen and then I add some shadow using a warm grey number III pitt artist pen by faber castell. You could also use a pencil for adding the shadows :)
Wow I love that cover on cover. I wish they still sold it. So pretty.
+No Post on Sundays Yes, it is really pretty, I like it better than the 2016 one, too, I think...

Me too!! Best planners ever :o)
Great overview. Like how you utilized the space within the Hobonichi and thanks a lot for the pen test. It was really helpful.
+Lisa Pierson Thank you so much! Do you have a Hobonichi as well?
+palestblue My first Hobonichi cousin arrived today! Really stoked to start using it.
Thank you for making this video. Thorough and complete review. I have an A6 I love for journaling. Glad I was able to see how it is used as a planner.
fantastic video! I'm visiting Japan at the end of the year and have been thinking about getting a cousin from the hobonichi store for 2018, this video has made up my mind, thank you!
Thank you so much! :) Oh how wonderful, have a great trip to Japan! That is a country that is on my bucket list for sure
I love your simple but effective set up! Und es ist auch sehr cool jemandem zuzuhöhren der den englischen trend hier in deutschland mit macht!:)
I love this book. I know what I am getting for 2016! I love your handwriting
So cool, I hope you will love it as much as I love mine!! I will definately be getting one for 2016 again as well :)
I love how you have your Hobonichi set up! It is so organized and also so fun to look at! Can I ask where you got the cute little monster stamps? They are adorable!
sheapup Thank you so much :) They are made by a company called Rico Design and came in a little set :)
I love my small hobonichi, but you've convince me I will be using the dousing for 2016. Thank you for the nice video!.
Judith Meyer Thank you so much for watching :D Haha I have actually just downsized to an A6 size hobonichi ;)

I would love to see how you do the hand lettering :)
Cool :) I will definately film a how-to video as soon as I find the time :D

+kaykaytoodlebug Do you mean the one with the different animals? Those are San-X characters called Sumikko Gurashi :) I love them so much!!
Yes...they are so cute!

This was so informative and interesting! Do you ever come to San Francisco area?
+Jo Ellen Thank you so much!! :) I have been to SF twice and liked it very much! Are your from the Bay area?
+palestblue Yes, if you ever come again, would love to meet you. It sounds like you travel quite a lot. You are so organized, I wonder how you do it all: work, study for Phd, travel, journal!!!!!!!!!!
HA! OMG I knew that was a magic the gathering card before you even showed it. I was like... Is that a MTG card?! xD How wonderful!
Haha so cool!! :)
Can u do a video on your a6 setup?
+Diane Rabinovich Unfortunately I don't have my A6 hobonichi planner any more... I went back to 6 ring binders and only use my hobonichi as a journal... sorry!
How do you make the boxes with the pins in - the ones towards the end of the video x
+tracy turner I draw the outline with a fine tip archival ink pen and then I add some shadow using a warm grey number III pitt artist pen by faber castell. You could also use a pencil for adding the shadows :)
+palestblue thank you very much :D
