  • This is what we needed for those cold winter nights. I need to keep water from freezing and I want to do it via solar. Well, this battery can do it thanks to a built in warmer.

I just bury 14-3 extensions cord, plain orange outdoor cord has been buried since 2003. Have fun with your chickens.

I used to do that years ago, but it is not the greatest idea. I prefer not to burn my house down doing that

UF direct burial cable instead of extension cords. Better idea.

I grew up on a farm. Weird thing is I have no memory of what we did about the chickens in the winter. We butchered our meat birds in the winter but I don't remember what we did about the layers. I'm surprised because watering the birds sounds like a job for the youngest kid and that was me. Not to mention making sure no eggs froze and cracked.

It's a process for sure. We tend to cull most of them in late fall, but let 6 to 8 winter over to start our new flock in March.

My brother purchased a walk in cooler, when the place that made them closed. You could keep it comfortable inside with a 100 watt light bulb when it was below 32 degrees outside. I think the walls and roof were about a foot thick with foam insulation. It was made of modular panels that you assembled on site. I wish I could have picked one up too. I think it would be a good place to store the batteries for an off grid electric setup. I assume that you want the shortest runs if wire between the panels and batteries because of DC power loss, then any longer runs of wire should be on the AC side? I would really like to have a system for off grid that is enough to run the well, it's the only 220 volt essential thing we have. The rest we can get by with 110 volts. That being said eventually I would want to ramp it up to handle more of the stuff so that we can really get and stay off grid as much as possible, and not have to depend on a generator for to much.

You get points for preaching to god.

That sounds like it would be perfect, too bad you could not get one. Chickens do fairly well in the cold, the biggest thing is to keep them draft free and fresh water. The coldest we had here with chickens was -15 degrees, and they did well, maybe a little cranky

Good video. Liking the battery info screen but a little pricy.
