Using hooks with garland 🤯🤯🤯 that’s one I never thought of. You are the best. Thank you for good tips, never being fake exited and always seeming like a real human
I don't know where I picked up the idea but for several years now I have been filling "holes" in our Christmas Tree with poinsettia picks. It gives the tree a feeling of Christmas with all the red flowers in the green tree.
When my mom was a kid she said they would put there Christmas tree up on Christmas eve and take it down the day after Christmas. I don't know why you would do all that work just for a few days. When I was a kid we would put our tree up after Thanksgiving. And now I put my tree up soon after Halloween lol. I just love having it up. Just gives me that happy Christmas feeling. 🌲
My parents always put up and decorated the tree on Christmas Eve. Actually, Santa's elves decorated the tree while Santa was busy putting out the gifts for 6 kids! It was magical to come down the steps and see the decorated tree and all the presents underneath! I love that I have that memory, but my parents must have been crazy! My children have the memory of decorating the tree as a family the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Same with me, I’m 65 and my parents decorated after bedtime Christmas Eve. The tree was real, and I don’t think it stayed up to New Year’s Day let alone the 12 day of Christmas ie Epiphany on January 6. I used to do the tree with the kids mid December but my 5 granddaughters came over on Nov 12- and decorated the tree in our apartment and it’s terrific.
I grew up with the tree going up on Christmas Eve after going to bed like many. We also opened our gifts on Christmas Eve, perhaps around midnight or so. My Dad would wake us up by running down the hall ringing sleigh bells, shouting "Ho Ho Ho ... Santa's been here!!" We would wake up ( if we ever did fall asleep at all) so excited to open gifts & have cookies & milk as well. We'd go back to bed & in the AM get ready to go to both grandparents' homes for more festivities. My parents made Christmas so magical for us! Oh & the tree stayed up until after Epiphany as well!!
Yes, my mother (for context, I am 74) said her family would go out on Christmas Eve to cut a tree and leave it outside. Then Christmas morning they would wake up to discover the tree was inside and decorated. It stayed up until New Years day. I grew up helping my Dad decorate our tree a week or two before Christmas and taking it down New Years day. (My 3 brothers never wanted to help and mother was usually cooking, so decorating the tree was my favorite activity with my dad). Now my tree goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving. My most magical tree was the year I used white lights with clear and gold ornaments. I put strings of lights toward the inside of the branches and more around the outside. I also placed the large ornaments inside the branches and small and medium outside. The reflection of the lights on the ornaments gave so much depth and brightness that it would take my breath away! And friends would bring their parents and friends over to see it!
I can just picture this... and the thought of people bringing others to see your tree is literally what I miss about the simpler days... I'm only 31 so I didn't get many years of those days but I remember them. (Riding my bike around the neighborhoods, knocking on neighbors doors, hanging out with kids and talking to elderly neighbors and them feeding me random things)
The ribbon tip!!! I've been circling the ribbon around and around uses so much and never looks right! Can't wait to decorate my tree now with all these tricks! Thank you
We MUST wait until after Thanksgiving (according to my 8-yr-old daughter) to put the tree up. She does not like to forget there is a very important holiday between Halloween and Christmas. I love this about her!
My dad who is 86 , says that when he was growing up. Santa would come and bring the tree all decorated ,but not until Christmas morning. He said it is his happiest childhood memory.
My artificial tree (still in attic until next week) has been with my family for more than 20 years. It gets balder & more sad looking every year, but we love it. The kids love helping fluff (or feeble attempt) the branches. And how adorable is Finley? She gets cuter every time.
Amazing video that’s starting to make me excited for the Christmas season. When I was little we lived way up in Northern Ontario. 2-3 weeks before Christmas a group of families would go out into the bush to cut down our own Christmas trees. Us young kids insisted on creating Christmas decorations to hang on the trees in the bush so all the animals could be thanked and celebrate Christmas too. I remember making garlands of popcorn, cranberries, bells made of suet, seeds, nuts and rock salt angel licks etc. We couldn’t do this any earlier as the trees dry out so quickly and can potentially become fire hazards. Especially with the iffy Christmas tree lights and electricity. Absolutely cherish these magical memories as I’m now 43 and live in a city nowhere near where I grew up…with a fake Christmas tree. Have always wanted to do Christmas for the animals with my own kids…Maybe this is the year fora few hours drive and the beginning of a new tradition. ❤️ from Shannon in Canada 🇨🇦
When I was little, we waited until the Monday before Christmas and it came down no later than the 27th. When I was upper elementary, my dad was sick and he asked if we wanted to enjoy Christmas decorations longer. We started putting the tree up on Thanksgiving night. It stayed up until at least New Year’s Day but later we switched to the Saturday after New Year’s Day. I love the idea of “gifts” as detours for little ones. And raising the tree is genius! Always learning something useful from your videos. Thanks so much for sharing.
My mom puts lights on the tree like no one else!!! she starts from the bottom and wraps the trunk of the tree top to bottom, then goes back down and wraps around the Thru the branches 😍😍😍it's SOOO MAGICAL AND BRIGHT I love how she wraps the tree in lights and yes it's a pain to take off but it's Soo worth it! Also she does this outside so the needles fall off and then we bring it inside :)
The tree goes up the Friday after Thanksgiving. Just another suggestion for special ornaments. I do not have a fireplace so my garlands go up over my windows. The tree goes in the living room by the window and I add a garland that has the special ornaments attached to it. I wrap branches around each ornament where you use an ornament hanger for added support.
I loved your tips! In Greece we usually decorated around December 15th and we take the decorations down at about January 10th. But the last couple of years I see a lot of people decorate mid November. I always decorate early to mid November, because it's my youngest daughter's birthday and I like our home full of lights and glitter! Much love from Greece!
Kallie....that garland idea is AMAZING!! I am 63 and have struggled with the garland swag always. I am so excited to try your 💡 idea. Thanks for the help 🙂
Some folks never put them away, just decorate them with different decor! When my daughter was young she had a tabletop Barbie tree that she used as a night light. She just loved the different color lights. Yeah she did this from 3 to 5, her kitten got to it. But to this day she will talk about her tree! That was a momma win win moment.
Wooooooow. The garland “hooks” 🤯 that’s incredibly simple and smart. And I never thought to cut the ribbons into sections. Learning so much this year 😂
Same here--Black Friday, tree goes up, New Years day, comes down. That's the way my family did it growing up, so that's the tradition I continued with my own family.
I love Kallie so much, I don't know how I've lived without her videos before! How can you be so intelligent, beautiful, ressourceful and nice, all at once, while helping so many people, having children, understand life and death, and living a full life. Even if she's not the only one, it's still remarkable and I wish I had more people like her around me rather than frustrated jerks who put everyone down (but it's not about to change because: covid).
In the Philippines, we set up our Christmas trees as early as September 😂 sometimes, we wait until after All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (Nov 1-2) before we put up our Christmas Decors but start of -ber months it's already acceptable to start celebrating. That's how much we love Christmas here.
I'm always the decorate early kind. 🎄🥰 I have so much to decorate that I want to enjoy it for as long as I can. 🤶🎅🦌 My Mama always loved more lights. Your baby is so beautiful.
Last year I put up my tree and décor before thanksgiving because well....pandemic and I needed all the joy! This year I'm back to the weekend after thanksgiving all the Christmas décor comes out!
Gorgeous !! So magical. I agree that more lights are better. We get our tree the first week of December. A few years we’ve put it up Thanksgiving weekend, and it was nice, but at a cost. Now we do it the weekend after Thanksgiving because we want to enjoy Thanksgiving in itself.
And yes ppl didn't want to keep a tree for to long in the house!! Less chance of fire and tree dieing.. We all decorated the Xmas tree on Thanksgiving I mean the whole family!! It give a activity and it most special that everyone had a hand in the holiday with us!! It means so so so much to us been going this 40 years now
I would have already had my tree up but I'm holding out for the big 9 ft one my mom got for my new house! (She's bringing it with the fam on Thanksgiving) I'm super impressed with these ideas! My favorites are the different sized lights, hooks for hanging garland and using shorter ribbon lengths! I have never been able to get ribbon right and I'm definitely going to be trying it again with this new knowledge. Awesome video!
Ohhh that sounds magical!!! My home has low ceilings so my tree can't be that tall but congrats on new house and new tree! God bless you and yours during this season of magic
Ive always loved the look of candles on a tree so I bought a 24 pack of battery operated tea light candles and spring hinge clothes pins. I’ll probably paint the clothespins dark green so it blends in with my tree and hot glue the candles onto the clothes pins. I’ve never tried this but hopefully it works and looks pretty. If anyone has any ideas or other suggestions plz let me know 😀
I decorated for Christmas about a week ago! 😬. I have often saved it for the weekend after Thanksgiving and things get too busy and it is like a week before Christmas before I get it done and this year I decided to treat myself to the stress-freedom and doing it early!!
My mom always put our tree up Thanksgiving weekend with all the childhood ornaments. Now that we are older my sister and I continue that tradition with our children and grandchildren. I love seeing the ornaments from my childhood it brings back sweet memories. 🎄 Your garland and ribbon hacks are brilliants. My absolute favorite are the gift wrapped books super smart. 🎁
Fabulous ideas! Your daughter is precious. Our tree went up Nov. 1st. I needed a bit of Christmas cheer! My husband came home the other day and said ‘Christmas has blown up the house!’ In a good way. Village is up, Garland on the mantle, outside done! I had a lot of energy…😂😂
We had cats that would climb even artificial trees, so we installed a plant hook on the ceiling above the tree and tied fishing line to the hook and near the top of the tree. The tree topper camouflages the fishing line, and the tree stays upright no matter what.
My dad always bought a tree too tall for the space, cut off the excess top, screwed in a cup hook to the trunk top and basically hung it from a permanently affixed cup hook in the ceiling. We didn’t have tree toppers.
Growing up we always decorated our tree and home on Christmas Eve day. It was not until the late 70’s that we put our tree a week or so before. My mom said when she was a young girl, the 30’s, that Santa brought the tree and decorations and put it up when he brought the gifts. Santa delivered all of the magic and wonder. Most importantly, Santa also set up the manger scene.
My parents put up and decorated the tree on Christmas Eve. Actually Santa brought the tree and the gifts. It was so exciting as a kid but thinking about it now, my parents must have been exhausted 😅
Great tips. Another way to make space under a real tree (if it’s tall enough) is to cut a few branches off the bottom. Then I use these to make swags to use on my porch lights. 🌲
We host Thanksgiving for 3 families every year. After dinner, the the men folk go black Friday shopping while the kids and I take down all the fall decor and put up the "fancy" tree. Since I am one of those over the top Christmas decorators (I have 5 Christmas trees!) it takes roughly a week to get all my decor up. TIP: I have a 4ft. tree dedicated to Christmas cards/family photos that we receive. We love seeing them all each day and when we take down the decorations they are either saved into an album or tossed depending.
Yes that was a Christmas Eve tradition. Even my kids (32&30) still love it. That said we would leave it up until mid January and now I may leave it up until Easter 🐣. Lol 😆
You're tree looks really pretty Kallie! 😁💜 Since I'm in a studio, I don't have the space for a tree. I decorate my plant. 🤭 Kids understand a lot more than you think! The sooner you start to say no, the easier it is. They will understand. Trust me.
I once put up a tree on Christmas Eve. My hubs was in an accident earlier that month and we stayed at his parent's house. My brother surprised us by getting us a tree put up and we were able to decorate it. And no, they don't learn that no means no when they move out! :) I'll be putting up the tree just before Thanksgiving so when the kids come to town for Thanksgiving we can decorate it! Thanks for the tips. I'll be picking up some decorative picks and using the ornament hanger for my string of beads.
I love the hooks used for the garland and the way you cut the ribbon up in smaller strips (that's so genius) I dont have kids of my own but i babysit my niece's every week day ...and so the box idea is probably the best idea ever! Bc last Christmas My 2 year old niece broke 5 family ornaments and we glued them back together bc they're special family heirlooms.. idk if it'll keep her out of the ornaments completely but its definitely worth the try!
I was born mid December 1965. Yes, we got our trees later for several reasons. In the 1970s, we honored Thanksgiving more than today. It wasn’t squeezed into the Christmas season then. Fresh trees would dry out fast. Tree lots didn’t open until at least the second week of December. We usually got our tree after my birthday and had it up a week before Christmas until New Year’s Day. Two weeks was it until we started getting artificial trees and setting it up earlier 🎄
My mother's parents used to decorate 100% on Christmas Eve after the kids went to bed!! (in the 1940's). Mom said it was magical to wake up to & we both appreciate the love and effort they put into that!! Seems super stressful to me to do that! Just wanted to share :) Merry Christmas and THANK YOU for all that you do! God Bless you and your family. XO
We never put the tree out until after Thanksgiving! I will put up lights outside before but only because I don't want to put up lights in freezing cold temps 🙃 and they don't get turned on until after...
I love these hacks, this is absolutely the latest I have ever put up a tree I cannot believe we waited so long! So now it’s here to Valentine’s Day hubby take that!
Yes!!! I did this last year on my trees. On my flocked tree I used red truck wrapping paper and on my deep purple tree I used the sugar plum fairy fabric. I thought why I have never thought of this before. lol. Almost free and if I want to change things up no guilt.
As a kid my parents always got real trees from the Christmas tree farm so we didn't put it up until the second week of December. I have a fake tree myself now and put it up between after Thanksgiving and the beginning of December. I've noticed this year though that even outdoor Christmas lights are up extra early. I'm talking the day after Halloween they started going up. Never seen that before lol
I remember getting our tree 2 days before Xmas and it was flocked Easter egg blue, this was in the early 70’s. We are doing our tree after Thanksgiving. 🎄👍🎄
I put up my tree in beginning of November but I decorate it for fall. Then the weekend after thanksgiving I just have to switch out the ornaments and ribbon. I love that I am not rearranging furniture, setting it up and putting on lights on that weekend anymore. And I used your light trick and bought some bigger bulbs to add to it…it make such a difference! ❤️
YES! putting up the tree Christmas eve is a normal tradition. The 12 days of Christmas STARTS Christmas day. Also, a live tree doesn't last forever. Plastic trees is the only reason people ca start on October 31. (which is crazy early) I think it is funny/disturbing that the people who put their trees up in October are the ones taking their trees down Christmas day. (this makes my heart sad) me= after Thanksgiving love your videos!
I'm waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate, but I have been trying to plan out my decor. I have a 15 month old grandson so I have to put all my decor high! I like the idea of boxes in front of the tree. We always get a real one and that will keep him out of the water. My mom used to tell me that they would go to church on Christmas eve. Her dad would stay home. When they got home, the tree was up!
Yes...when I was a child, our Christmas Eve tradition was to put up the tree. I think it was because most people used live trees and wanted them to stay up until Jan. 6th for Epiphany. I usually don't do the tree until the day after Thanksgiving, but this year, they are going up now. Early! So I can enjoy the lights.
For their heirloom ornaments, you could also hang them on a pine garland or swag and hang it on the wall out of the little ones reach. It increases decoration while keeping those ornaments safe.
Tree set up while I was growing up was week 2 of Dec because it was a real tree. Going and picking one out was part of the Christmas celebration. As an adult and a mom, I have always had faux trees; allergies and a desire to enjoy it longer were the key factors in deciding that. The set up day was always the day after Thanksgiving. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Attaching garland with ornament hooks...wrapped gift wall blockade, WOMAN, totally brilliant! I have one, if using a simple topper, attach it to the top section of the tree BEFORE you assemble the tree. The ladder balance thing reaching in, over is nutts. It came to me at the top of a 12 foot ladder before tumbling down. Ha! One of my fav designers says don't stop at two light types, add strings of fairy lights too. ~ Husband wants Christmas Eve take down day after. I can usually get him to let me 10 days before and New Years Day take down.
I love all of these tips! I won’t turn on Christmas music or decorate the tree until the day after Thanksgiving. Just want to enjoy Thanksgiving day first!
Some good tips, thanks. I unboxed a new tree and erected it on Thanksgiving Day. The following day was spent creating the "tree topper" with various picks, sprays and florals and wrapping it in 590 lights lights. (Next year I will probably add another 120 bulb strand). The next two days were spent doing ribbon, and then taking it down and redoing it because the photos I took of the first try were horrendous, LOL. Two more days (with a day off in-between) were used up putting actual ornaments on the tree. I thought one day's worth of ornament humming and hawing about where to hang each ornament was going to be enough, but I ended up adding another 3 dozen ornaments today. I also intermittently worked on decorating the mantel, which isn't quite finished. I have a candle centerpiece to put together and Christmas themed "art" to swap out in the frames and rehang. And the front porch and front door still need to be decorated. Decorating for Christmas for me is a days-long process. I take my time and enjoy every moment.
Your Baby is so cute! My daughter is 12 now and I miss her at that age. Also I remember growing up that my Aunt had the tree up and all really either for Thanksgiving or the day after now I think people are putting them up the day after Halloween. I think with everything going on in the world why not celebrate as long as you can.
Brilliant ideas!! I never thought of elevating the tree to put presents underneath. I love the idea of cutting up ribbon to put around the tree instead of winding around using the spool
Thanks for the tips. I always wait until after Thanksgiving to put up the tree. When I was young my parents put up a live tree Christmas Eve. It was all decorated when we got up. Plenty of water at the base kept it alive until New Years Day. The very next day it was put out for the trash along with all the dead needles😁
I really love the idea of wrapping weighted boxes to keep little hands away from the tree. My kiddo isn’t crawling yet, but I’ll definitely use that tip next year!
I'm waiting until the weekend after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas, but love getting all of these tips now to incorporate into my decorating. Your last tip to hang special ornaments later is genius. I'm not saying I'll always wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate, but this year I need my Thanksgiving to be Thanksgiving. BTW your family is darling.
Back in the "olden days," the trees were real and the lights were large and HOT! We'd put the tree up by Dec. 15 or so and by the day after Christmas, it was a dried out husk (even though we watered it religiously). It was a revelation when we got our first fake tree that allowed us to put it up whenever we wanted. And, that was in the 60s! My mom said that some people put small lit candles on their tree, which I can barely imagine. By the way, your baby is INSANELY cute. I'm not a "every baby is cute" type of person, but you hit the jackpot!
Over the years, I’ve always been done decorating by Thanksgiving and when we were done eating, we’d turn on the lights!🌲🤗 now we decorate and turn them on before Thanksgiving to enjoy everything longer since it goes so fast!
Just put ours up last night! Did your ribbon idea, and love it so much better than wrapping the whole thing around the tree like I usually do. Thanks for these great tips!!
We start decorating beginning of December and it is down by New Years! By that time I just want my house back to normal! When the kids were young of course we left it all up longer! I loved this video especially with small shots of your precious, so beautiful little one, that put a smile on my face! Even my grands are older than that, so this was a treat! TFS
I normally wait til the weekend after Thanksgiving but I'm so over fall and ready to start decorating for Christmas now! Might start in the next few days 🙂
I use dollar store wreaths around the centre of the tree. Just cut the ring and slide them on. Makes the tree look really full.
Me too!
I use the poinsettia picks too. It really helps fill in empty spots on my fake tree.
@@LynneGirl26 ooooh thats a great idea, as well as the picks!!
My mom does this too, it looks gorgeous
When my mom was a kid she said they would put there Christmas tree up on Christmas eve and take it down the day after Christmas. I don't know why you would do all that work just for a few days.
Plus, it looks like you matched your baby’s outfit to your wrapping paper! Nice touch. 😉
If anyone has any ideas or other suggestions plz let me know 😀
What a great idea! Thank you for sharing!
@@saraphillips1038 Your welcome
Great idea!
@@midlifemom5829 thx 😊
What an awesome idea, thank you it sounds beautiful 😍
Your petite ya-ya is precious. Thanks for the tree tips!
Your garland and ribbon hacks are brilliants.
It’s our family tradition to put our tree up the weekend after Thanksgiving and to take it down the first weekend after New Years.
Brilliant idea Karen 😀 Thanks for sharing
Growing up we always decorated our tree and home on Christmas Eve day. It was not until the late 70’s that we put our tree a week or so before. My mom said when she was a young girl, the 30’s, that Santa brought the tree and decorations and put it up when he brought the gifts. Santa delivered all of the magic and wonder. Most importantly, Santa also set up the manger scene.
We put ours up Thanksgiving night and it comes down after the 1st of the year🥰
Love the last one with the large boxes blocking the tree!!!! Definitely will be using it next year!!
That hacks for the tree collar is genius. I wanted to buy one this year but I’m gonna use what I have at home. Thanks for the tip😘❤️😘♥️
My parents put up and decorated the tree on Christmas Eve. Actually Santa brought the tree and the gifts. It was so exciting as a kid but thinking about it now, my parents must have been exhausted 😅
Big box little-un forcefield at base of tree is my favourite tip! Thank you. 🎄👶
W real trees we can’t put it up too early or it will look terrible by Xmas. Love love the ribbon trick!! Great vid kallie!🥰
Yes that was a Christmas Eve tradition. Even my kids (32&30) still love it. That said we would leave it up until mid January and now I may leave it up until Easter 🐣. Lol 😆
Definitely before, I love Christmas so much I do it before Halloween,
Growing up we always put the tree up after Thanksgiving. Sometimes on black Friday but usually the Saturday after.
No. My kid is almost 30 and he STILL doesn’t get the “no means no” thing😄 Great video!
Omg!! Paint cans! You are brilliant! Love it - Thank you!
Yes!!! I did this last year on my trees. On my flocked tree I used red truck wrapping paper and on my deep purple tree I used the sugar plum fairy fabric. I thought why I have never thought of this before. lol. Almost free and if I want to change things up no guilt.
The ribbon tip is definitely gold🙌🏾 thank you
I was going to put the tree up early this year but got sick with Covid. Hoping I have the energy for this Christmas!
The larger lights with smaller lights is one of my favorite looks. So magical.
YES! putting up the tree Christmas eve is a normal tradition. (this makes my heart sad)
me= after Thanksgiving
love your videos!
Our family tradition is to put up the tree and all of the decorations on the weekend after Thanksgiving.
I put ours up after Thanksgiving and leave up till after New Years. I love watching your videos. I always get good tips plus your funny! 🤣
Day before 🦃Thanksgiving ... makes it more special and when Santa shows at the end of the Macy's parade I'm ready 😁
I have a 10 month old also and the present trick to keep them from pulling at the tree is smart!
I am trying to make a tradition to put up Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Seeing the baby was my favorite part! Also, putting the artificial tree up on paint cans is brilliant! Love your channel:)
Awesome video! Never heard of using hooks for Garland. That is genius!
Your baby is adorable!! You have great ideas!!!
I really love the idea of wrapping weighted boxes to keep little hands away from the tree. My kiddo isn’t crawling yet, but I’ll definitely use that tip next year!
I love your ribbon and picks hacks. Great video, Kallie!
I am going to try cutting the ribbon and putting it into the tree as you did. Looks lovely!
I don’t celebrate Christmas but I just love watching your content 🥰
we put our tree up the first day of chanukah!!🌟🎄✡️
Over the years, I’ve always been done decorating by Thanksgiving and when we were done eating, we’d turn on the lights!🌲🤗 now we decorate and turn them on before Thanksgiving to enjoy everything longer since it goes so fast!
Just put ours up last night! Did your ribbon idea, and love it so much better than wrapping the whole thing around the tree like I usually do. Thanks for these great tips!!
I’ve always struggled with this look. I can’t wait to try it this way!
I always put mine up the weekend after Thanksgiving
Love these ideas!!! I am definitely using the 3 foot ribbon hack. Why didn’t I think of that?!🤦🏼♀️🤗👏🏻
I also like putting a blanket or stuffing behind the tree skirt bc it is so flat. It adds more substance and makes it stand out better.
We start decorating beginning of December and it is down by New Years! By that time I just want my house back to normal! When the kids were young of course we left it all up longer! I loved this video especially with small shots of your precious, so beautiful little one, that put a smile on my face! Even my grands are older than that, so this was a treat! TFS
I think im gona try to do the extra lights on the tree ! Great hack
I normally wait til the weekend after Thanksgiving but I'm so over fall and ready to start decorating for Christmas now! Might start in the next few days 🙂
