Awesome song played on an awesome banjo by and awesome banjo player. Lots of drop thumb on this song, but I have a stupid question for Clifton. Are you doing this in your usual two finger style or in a more traditional claw hammer style?
Both styles are traditional. Here I'm using the old down-picking style that was known as hoedown, dropthumb, overhand, and various other names. Folklorists from the urban northeast dubbed the style "clawhammer" around 1965.
Definitely adding this to my backpack of folk songs for when I go off to school. I’m bringing my clothes, books, and my mountain banjo. All I need.
Guess it's about time I learned this bangin song. Super easy with ALL my favorite fretless licks. So I finally got my hands on Around the Bend and it was everything I've been hoping for all these years. I had to buy it off Ebay and watch it over at my father in-law's house because he's the only person I know with a DVD player. I threatened to upload it to Pirate Bay on a trailer video here on YT, which Folkways noticed and responded by fixing their site so the public can finally buy it off the official site now! It's is a solid conclusion to Mike's long and storied career and I appreciate the context you offered around German War. If you play old time banjo, go buy Around the Bend from Folkways.

Love the tune Clifton, and that old banjo has a lovely sweet sound to it. I have a question regarding your tuning. I know you recommend tuning down to better suit singing along; this seems like great advice for someone playing solo, which is what I want to do most, but what do you do if/when you're playing with other instrumentalists?
I'll either tune to them, or they'll tune to me.

Look up antique banjos for sale on the internet. Recently bought a George Dobson doing this. Be prepared to spend some money, however.
