I am new to pastel pencils and found your techniques and applications fascinating. Beautiful work. You have a very soothing voice to settle down with. I learned so much. Thank you for sharing your time the video.
Dave ,I have been an artist since I was 16 years old. I am now 76 and have my own studio and sold hundreds of paintings, portraits, wildlife etc. I want to get back into pastels, but the pencils I bought I don't like, the white will not cover, should I invest in the pencils you use. Sorry to be a bother, but I love Your work.--Thanks so much...Jerry@@DavePortersArt
Just subbed here. Been using oils, acrylics, charcoal, colored pencils, for years. But sorta burned out and unsatisfied to be honest. Really been hoping to fund a different medium. And lo and behold, I think through your channel, I found it. Pastels! Looks so attractive to use. So a question on blending. … you only use your fingers or what? And…. Do you start with white for most portraits? Then start glazing the tones? Then blending from there? Anyway. Thank you
Awesome! Thank you! Pastels are great fun to work with, you can use them painterly or detailed. I sometimes use a cotton bud and a colour shaper for details... the more videos you watch on my UA-cam channel the more you will be aware of how I use them. I love to work on a grey surface, yes you have sussed out my procedure, white first to get the texture and glaze then repeat until the desired results appear. All the very best with your pastel journey... thanks for watching! 🙏
Yes, but I am an acrylic, opaque water color and oil artist, it's been years since I dabbled in pastels. What pencils and board do you recommend ? I just need brilliant whites and colors. I'm sure I can do this. My pastel of a basset hound ,and portrait of Elvis Presley took first place in a competition many years ago, which was done with sticks. Thanks Dave---Jerry
You seem pretty experienced, do you mind if I upload a short video (10-15 sec)of a oil pastel painting i recently finished on my UA-cam channel so you can tell me your opinion about it?I am pretty much self taught as a painter .
Really sorry George, I have to set a few boundaries regarding critiques, I have so many requests. Please consider joining my Patreon where you have an additional benefit of joining an exclusive facebook group where artists support and give ideas. Thanks for watching... all the very best. 🙏

Amazing. Are the Caran d'ache pencils Luminance or another type?
Luminance is the coloured pencil type... The name of the ones I use are Caran d'Ache Pastel Pencils. All the very best 🙏
@@DavePortersArt Ah! Thank you.
Do you ever do portraits with full pastel sticks, not just pencils? Curious about your technique with those.
I have one on UA-cam starting with sticks then details with pencils... here is the link ua-cam.com/video/-xBkMVC8QYY/v-deo.html thanks for watching 🙏

@@DavePortersArt No problem!Thank You!
How do you spray this your work ? Or do you spray it to make the work permanent?
Hi, I don't spray my work as it dulls the subtleties down. I either wrap them for storage in glassine paper or frame them under a mount. 🙏
Fairfield California .. I’m having a heckuva time finding the pastel pencils. Any recommendations, anyone 😅
