Since the last video, I had some people wondering whether Id abandoned Manchester Piccadilly - considering many more people have watched, followed and subscribed over this past year I thought it was about time I explained how this layout works, especially as it’s not a regular / conventional layout.

I really enjoy watching people discuss their plans and intentions! Modelling real locations is always a compromise, with suggestions of reality and familiarity to draw the viewer into the scene! You do this really well John, and I look forward to seeing how things unfold! All the best, Ian.

Great explanation, even for those of us who've been around a while! Things change and I think it's fine (only reasonable) to bend the truth a bit (or even a lot) on a layout! We don't have room in our massive basements for those wonderful open spaces they manage in the USA, but then again, they are trying to replicate a country several orders of magnitude larger than ours, so they too have to compromise. All's fair in love and modelling, as I don't think anyone has said! Or maybe they have.

I am trying to fit in quite a lot and stretch the imagination, so I probably need to go over the layout purpose every now and again, so the more recent viewers know what they are looking at. Hopefully the idea will work in the end. I just glad to have the time to do it.
What's interesting is the way you can concentrate on the movements in one particular station at a running session, sending trains on their way elsewhere. Then you can spend another evening doing the same at a different location.

John I completely get what Manchester Piccadilly is. Over 50 years ago when I was building my model railway I had to compromise on my builds. I remember you saying many videos ago that Manchester Piccadilly was a representation not a exact scale model. Important thing is, if you are happy with it so I'm I. Bill from California, USA.

Dear John, for the space you got for the N-scale Piccadilly layout, I humbly think you’re creating a great representation of the lines you model. And yes, I do understand the ‘urge’ of many people who want to model as close as possible to the actual example. However, in our layouts there’s one thing we can’t avoid which is compression. For the comprehension of compression, folks should really attempt to model an actual size tennis court. To scale it will blow their minds and available space to achieve such a feat. What I don’t understand is why it suddenly became such an issue. If I look at Manchester Piccadilly on Google Earth my eyes observe a throat of track that’s much larger than what you could model on your layout footprint. So, when the anonymous eyes prefer the emphasis on your Piccadilly model, they inadvertently give you a compliment for the compression you’ve achieved. Hence, I do not comprehend the ‘backlash’ on the more scenic parts of the layout. After all, you’ve explained your design requirements before. Plus, it is your layout, your world, your model. Rule 1 applies here! Cheerio
Absolutely, with several areas compressed together we create a world / scenes / environments where areas can co-exist even if they are next to each other and yet hidden from each other. Thank you for your comment.

Each to their own😅! I actually like the idea of incorporating smaller stations if you have the room. It seems to add a bit of purpose to the model journey . As for your version of Piccadilly, stunning. That opening shot looks real! It isn’t is it? Is it? 😊
Thank you, that is the idea in a nutshell. Yes I built the whole station from scratch, so yes all shots are of my model, I only showed photos of the real thing when I wanted to show what I was trying to replicate. The station is complete now so no need.
Two videos for the pricew of one? Woohoo! I love seeing how your mind works John and the plans that you are always coming up with. Plus it's always good to have an update. One main reason that I love your video's is becuse of the progression. It's always refreshing to be reminded that not everything has to be completed quickly, but that taking the necessay time to plan and constuct are rewarding. Keep up the good work my friend. BTW are you planning on going to GETS this year? I have decided that I will most likely go on the Sunday for a change in an attempt to dodge the large crowds on Saturday and hopefully be able to see some of the layouts properly this time. Very impressed with your whole layout and especially your Piccadilly station. I'm about to embark upon a TT120 layout incorporating the old Manchester Central station in the 1950 / 60s. Did you build the station roof yourself or was it a kit, as I'll need something similar for my Central station.
Hi, sounds like a great venture, especially in 120.
The whole of Piccadilly station is scratch built, and this is the 2nd incarnation. The first made from card and acetate. However, this warped quite badly over the first 2years. The most recent version is 3d printed, that way I could replicate the girders, beams etc. Buying such as a kit, may prove difficult. There are canopies available, but whether they are close enough is another matter. Scalescene maybe worth a look. Hoping that’s helpful.

Oh John, where's your ambition gone! Couldn't you purchase your neighbours houses and knock through the wall to build Milton Keynes and Euston! ;) Seriously, I admire the way you use your ambition to represent effectively what you are planning. Would it be possible to move the board holding New Mills forward just enough so the trains entering the tunnel could connect at the lines running along the back of the layout?
Hi Dave, I’d love to model the whole line, big would need the whole street, thinking the council and other people may have something to say about that, lol.
I cannot move the boards I’m afraid, the gap left in the middle is on its limit on so I have to work with what I have. Dinting station build video to follow shortly.
You gonna make any other stations on the Hope Valley Line or Glossop Line?

Basically you are showing the area with limited space John, I worked on the Colne Valley Railway in Essex for around 40 years, even though the hole length of the preserverd line is 1 mile you would need 35'6''! us modelers never rely model any train to that lenght!
Exactly, this is why I zoned the layout, so areas can be modelled next to each other whilst giving the impression each area is miles apart from the next.Do remember Piccadilly is N gauge too.
