I'd really love to see an extension of Line 2 to Square One eventually, it truly would be the natural terminus as it's not only the largest shopping centre in Ontario and a bustling office and residential buildings cluster; it is the second largest GO Transit terminal after Union, largest MiWay bus terminal, and future interchange of the Hurontario LRT with the Mississauga Transitway. Having all the services converge at that point is really smart planning.
Not even that expensive to build comparative to Scarborough, depending on the alignment, as it could piggybank at grade or elevated on the Milton GO corridor for much of its length.

      I agree to Square One

I strongly agree that they should do this. This would make a direct seamless connection of the Mississauga centre, Downtown Toronto, and Scarborough centre all in one subway train ride, and the alignment of it is more than perfect enough.

They had plans to do so. But, the Region Of Peel and the Mayor of Mississauga at the time said no.

@@July1st1867 No reason it couldn't make it's way to Cooksville GO after stopping at Sherway gardens. If you look at the original plans to extend to Dixie Go it would dip down to Sherway gardens and then back up to the rail corridor at Dixie go and then could follow the corridor to Cooksville.

It should go all the way to Highway 10 along the Hydro right of way with a few grade crossing separations to meet the new light rail in Peel?

the fact that we're building transit extensions for billions, and in the 70's they viewed tens of millions as too expensive, just goes to show how ridiculously undervalued transit was at the time.

20:30 I well remember that charter rail trip, I was on the train. It stopped at places that public trains don't go, including the museum Y, Lower Bay, and around the Greenwood Yard. Ironically, it wasn't the "last Harrah" for the Gloucester cars; they were pressed into service for weeks and maybe months afterwards.

Highly unlikely (also, not really necessary) to see an extension further West for a few reasons
    1. GO improvement and electrification projects, which will end up in there being two-way 15min Rush hour service along Milton GO, and hourly two-way service rest of the day
    2. Kipling is the GO Station, and a perfect transfer point
    3. the GO Line will have a transfer with Hurontario, which will provide access to rest of Ssauga.
    4. they JUST opened a huge bus terminal at Kipling, which hosts all Miway routes now, as well as frequent, express, and local TTC routes

From 2010 to 2015 I said the most important subway extension in Toronto was the extension to East Mall (Honeydale). Basically, a one stop, at-grade extension would remove a number of Mississauga and GO buses from Dundas.
It would also show that not every subway needs to be underground.

At Main Street Station - the only station on the line to actually have 'Street' in the name - you can still see the outline of the collector's booth on the mezzanine level, on the north side, just past where the stairwells to the bus terminal are.
As for rising costs of subway construction. I've often wondered what the greater markup has been. Is it cost of materials? Or is it cost of labour?

  • @jackdough8164

At least the three stop Scarborough extension better than the one stop idea. Clearly whoever thought taking out 5 stops and replacing it with one was a good idea has never taken transit. That’s what kills me the most about most of the people making decisions about what we should get based off numbers on paper alone

I can see two other possible Western extension ideas.
    1. To Sherway Garden and then south to Long Branch
1.a. and then possibly to Port Credit, connecting with Hurontario. (which.... will parallel the GO Line that's gonna provide all-day two-way 15min service.
(A streetcar line branching off of Queen Streetcar, along Queensway to Sherway Garden to connect, would be very nice)
    2. North along where Etobicoke RT was supposed to be, to Renforth, connecting to Transitway and to Eglinton LRT.

11:13 "Construction of the line would require the expropriation of 800 properties, 70% of which were residential. The subway itself would run almost entirely north of Bloor and Danforth"
I'm really confused why they put it north of those streets rather than cut-and-cover under them. Must have been massively expensive.

    • @Skyfoogle

it was the 60's, the idea of interrupting traffic was a cardinal sin. they'd literally rather bulldoze homes.

    • @stinkyroadhog1347
      @stinkyroadhog1347 8 місяців тому

@@Skyfoogle That's not even a 60s thing. It's a current thing too. Instead of using cut and cover for our new underground transit projects in places we clearly can get away with it, we use expensive tunnel boring which also causes exceedingly deep subway stations like those on TYSSE and Line 5
