Hiking Maryland Heights at Harper's Ferry
Вставка

- The Maryland Heights Trail is one of the "must do" hikes in Harper's Ferry National Historic Park, located in Maryland and West Virginia, in and around the historic town of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. This trail is heavily used and crowded, even on weekdays. You'd better go early if you want any solitude at all. LOL!
In this video, I start out along the north banks of the Potomac River, in Washington County, Maryland, just off the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Trail. From here I access the Maryland Heights Trail, which climbs steeply up the ridge. The trail passes some Civil War fortifications and then descends steeply to the top of a huge cliff that offers stunning views of the surrounding area.

I finally visited harper's ferry and the maryland heights overlook last saturday. I want to come back and do this again !
Cant wait to visit here
It’s a great hike and an awesome view from the rocks. Its steep in sections but its not a long hike. I’m sure you can make it. Hope you enjoy your visit.
Thank you am gonna dedicate an entire day for the hike.incase lol
3 miles of AT is a piece of cake. 3 miles roundtrip is 6 miles and is a good hike.
Thanks so much for checking out my vid!
Awesome! I live right near all of these historical places by the Potomac river, none of them are any more than 20 minutes from me haha. Have been to Harper's Ferry many times, as well as Point of Rocks, Brunswick, Antietam, and more haha. Have to say that Harper's Ferry and particularly Maryland Heights are definitely the most beautiful area close by me!
It is a really nice area with beautiful scenery and loads of history. Thanks for checking out my video!
Man that was cool! That trail offered everything you could want from history, to neat rock formations, to some awesome overlooks and views! Thanks for sharing!
It was a great trail...steep terrain to get the blood flowing LOL, tons of history, great views, cool rocks, two awesome rivers...what more could you want? The down side: tons of people...I managed to go at a time when its not so busy but still saw plenty of people, I can't imagine it on a weekend. They say the people are packed like sardines at the overlook, I got no interest in that at all. LOL! With the right timing though, this is an excellent spot. Definitely check out Harper's Ferry if you ever get the opportunity to visit. Thanks for watching, my friend!
Really enjoyed the video especially with all the history you shared. There is much to see along the Potomac River, for sure. Wow, that is a wonderful view from Maryland Heights. Neat seeing the trains. Looks like you did a pretty good job at finding a little solitude. This is definitely a beautiful area with so much history. Hiking and History just seem to go together. Thanks for sharing, friend.
You are exactly right, my friend. Hiking and history definitely can make an awesome combination. Harper's Ferry area is the perfect example of that combo. I made multiple short visits to the area and didn't even scratch the surface of everything to see and do. It's a really neat area that I think you would really enjoy. Timing is everything if you're wanting solitude, and it's not easy to come by in this popular destination. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for watching!
Very cool! How awesome to spend time in a place with so much history! As usual, thanks for sharing your adventure!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This town and the surrounding area has seen a lot of history going back to the early days of the country, and it was very strategic location during the Civil War. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it!
so much history in that area, thanks for sharing.
The area is loaded with history going back to the early days of the country. It's a really neat area. Thanks so much for watching!
Another awesome video as to be expected. Great to get a little history lesson at the same time. Thanks for sharing.
It's always awesome when you can combine a great historical sight with some great views and a nice trail. Thanks so much for watching, my friend! I appreciate it!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate it!
Was great place that you been , great hiking and great video friend.
Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate it!
I have done that hike 4 time and it a fantastic place 👍👍
It is a great hike with a lot of history and the great views. Thanks so much for checking out my video!
AWESOME!! great hike up, and nice to see more of the Harper's Ferry area and more history. We see a little in AT vids all the time but not much. That overlook was KILLER! Roxana says the town doesnt even look real.. really it looked like a model railroad so perfect! and you know i love the train action, super cool that you caught a Meet Up of the freight and Amtrak
Thank you, my friend. Yes I actually had you in mind when I saw those trains, I knew you would like that. It was cool to see both Amtrak and a freight. It was an awesome overlook. The town is pretty neat. Stay tuned for my next video, I take you for a tour inside the town. AT vids often don't show much because the AT in that area is at river level, it crosses the bridge to left of the train bridge (from the overlook's vantage point) and goes through some of the town before crossing a road bridge and heading back towards Virginia. Thanks for watching!
Smell N Roses
A HA! i thought that was the AT bridge in the video. YES very interested in seeing more of the area this is great thanks for giving us a more in depth look at this well known spot!
This may have been the same place that Sintax & Mike did last winter. I wish that you had time to show the old fort area. Great Hike and thanks again for sharing! Bob
Yes I do regret not having enough time to hike farther up the ridge to check out the old fort...it was either the fort or the view so I selected the view LOL! I just recently watched Sintax's video. He and Mike did go to Harper's Ferry, which is that town you see below me in the overlook, but they got on the AT and headed south of town because there is no camping inside the National Historic Park area. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, my friend!
Harper's Ferry was awesome to see
It is a unique and interesting place. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching!

Buddy I like how you add the history of the site along with the visual beauty!!! I am a big history buff. Thanks for adding that info to the video and Thanks for Taking us along!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, my friend, and I hope you found it interesting. I am also a big fan of history and love visiting places of historical significance such as this. I really regretted not having enough time to go further up the ridge to the remains of the big Union fort. I think you'll also enjoy my next video (stay tuned, coming out in about a week). Thanks so much for watching and commenting, as always I really appreciate your support.
Without a doubt I will watch for it. The facts about the areas you visit add a another whole level to your videos...not just the hills, trails and mountains....but what is unique about this place. Thanks for adding that info and also educating us about those areas
Lee Ralph Thanks so much for your support. It really means a lot!
Nice video, really appreciated the history!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. All the historical significance is definitely a nice touch to what is already a great trail. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, I appreciate it!
great video like always. I can't wait to go there in 12 days. I'll be able to hike from the hostel I will be staying at.
Thanks so much for watching! Harper's Ferry is a wonderful area and there is so much to see and do. Enjoy your visit!
Super Awesome
Glad you enjoyed it, my friend. Thanks for watching!
Big Civil War buff here. I was hanging on every word. Great video!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This area was a really happening place in the past and it saw a lot of action during the Civil War. I really regretted not having enough time to visit the big stone Union fort that was further up the ridge, but i had to get down to the overlook LOL! Thanks so much for watching, my friend. I appreciate your support.
The fort will just have to wait. Until we know otherwise, we have nothing but time.
Campfire Steve very well said, my friend!
That is awesome! I love historical battle site like that. Could you see any evidence of the fighting? Like bullet and shell strikes on the rocks and cliff faces.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It was very cool getting the chance to see this area and check it out both for the natural beauty and all the historical significance. I'm sure there is a ton of evidence of the fighting, unfortunately I don't really know much about what specifically to look for, plus I was pushed for time that day. No doubt there are still some undiscovered artifacts out in those woods as well. Again, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching!
That was a nice overlook--really enjoyed the view of Harper's Ferry. The trail looked pretty strenuous in places... It's weird to not see you wearing that white Virginia Tech hat. Have you retired it? Thanks for sharing the hike. Take care.
Thanks man. I enjoyed this hike, but it was a challenging climb in spots. I regretted not having enough time to go on up higher on the ridge to see the old Union fort. The overlook was awesome though. This is a crowded spot, I was lucky to catch it with not that many other people on the trail. Oh no I still have my VT hat, I have a grey one and a beige one, they both make appearances from time to time LOL! Thanks for watching, man. I appreciate it!
Jackson' s Valley Campaign was brilliant. It has been taught in the military colleges of Europe for years. It must be seen in the content of the Virginia theater at the time.
Indeed it was a brilliant campaign and made him the hero of Virginia at the time. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. I appreciate it!
I'm no historian but Jackson's campaign indeed was brilliant and considered an overwhelming success. I believe that I did not make myself clear in the video, when I said he was "thwarted" what I meant was that we was prevented from taking Harper's Ferry during the 1962 campaign. It was not my intention to suggest that his entire campaign had failed, but the Confederate siege and capture of Harper's Ferry did not take place until 1863. That is how I understand it, but as I mentioned I could possibly be wrong as I do not have extensive knowledge of the subject.
I've wondered about the view from that spot when passing through on the AT. Thanks for sharing! BTW, the first few seconds of this video and previous two seem to repeat. I'm curious if that's intentional...
Yes the view is pretty nice from Maryland Heights. It's one of the must-do trails in the Harper's Ferry area. Check it out if you ever get back through there sometime. Thanks so much for watching! Not sure what's going on with the video repeating...all of my videos display my logo for about 3.5 seconds at the beginning, maybe that's what you saw repeating? Otherwise must be a technical glitch in UA-cam, they are certainly known for glitches LOL!
In 480p, I see your logo and then the hike video for a second or two. Then, your logo appears again, and I see the same 1-2 seconds of video. Then, it continues on as I'd expect.
Jason Thompson Thanks for pointing that out. It must be a glitch in UA-cam, though I have not seen it watching anyone else's videos. I'll check into it.
I really want to do this hike but am not that great at hiking so scared to do so many miles lol
Don’t be scared its really not that bad.
Cool history and spot! In July 8 1864 it all became Union controlled. Never to change again. (Just poken the stick for fun) Thanks for sharing!
LOL!!! Although most of us down South will never admit it, we're all a lot better off after Reunification LOL! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks so much for watching!
How long did it take to get to the top
As I recall it didn't take too long to get up there, probably less than an hour. It's a pretty steep climb but its not very long. It's well worth the effort to see that awesome view though. Thanks for checking out my vid!
How long is the hike up?
I don’t recall exactly but its not far, maybe couple of miles max. Its a short hike. Thanks for checking out my vid!
ua-cam.com/video/9CGEpJB8pgc/v-deo.html is that part of the trail or did you venture towards the edge?
The trail sort of ends near the rocky area and then you can sort of scramble around however you feel comfortable. Plenty of awesome views without doing anything crazy or dangerous though. Thanks for checking out my vid!
