    Love Harper's Ferry! Achingly beautiful little town with fascinating history, charming shops and decent restaurants. Its small narrow streets and nearby roads get a little overwhelmed during tourist season so it's not a bad idea to go during a mild spell during winter. Great tubing on the rapids in summer though.
    Shepardstown is another great location within a half hour of Harper's Ferry. Great little college town with a bunch of old historical buildings, shops, restaurants and a thriving arts scene with several galleries and some good hiking nearby. Sharpsburg, site of the famous Civil War Battle of Antietam is only a few minutes away over the Potomac in Maryland as well.

      Nice yeah, I thought I was going on a weekday in the winter, turned out that it was a federal holiday for New Year’s the day after New Year’s, plus the weather was nice so there was hundreds of people there. It wasn’t too bad but there was a lot of people. And Half the people were from shepherd college. I’ll definitely think about some other spots in West Virginia like that.

    Love Harpers Ferry! We river tube down and under that railway and even stop under it for a break, awesome views from the start to finish!

      Yeah, I’ll have to do a tubing adventure this summer, I’ve been in the past when I was younger

    If you ever go back, instead of going left when you exit the train bridge, go right and follow the road to the point where there is a vehicle bridge over the train tracks. Near where the guardrail meets a wall, you’ll see a trail head. Maybe 25 minutes to the top. Kinda of a locals only/deer trail, but much faster. And the big rock you pointed to has a date engraved on it. 😊

      Interesting, I never actually walked that other direction, but now that you mention it I know what you are talking about. Will check it out next time

    If you are going that far consider continuing up the Stone Fort trail, about another 1.5 miles round trip. Less crowded ridge walk up from the cliff lookout, with more Civil War ruins.

      That was the original plan, when we got to that part there was a sign that said it would take three hours. I didn’t believe it. I had planned about an hour and a half, but I didn’t wanna get stuck up there because it was going to get dark so we plan to go back and finish that part we missed in a different season, but definitely was the original idea.

      @@DMVAdventures Yeah you had a big day, it's a lot! Just mentioning the alternative for anyone mostly interested in the hike who have maybe already seen the town. There is some parking on the maryland side too I think, but it's been a while since I've tried that.

    • @DMVAdventures
      @DMVAdventures  Рік тому

      There used to be 2 parking lots in Maryland by the canal trail, but they removed them. The other two hikes I did in Maryland earlier this year had the same thing. Maryland closed those parking lots. Not only that but they put no parking signs everywhere.

    DC people be like: “u gotta travel 2-4 hours to hike this spot ‘near’ DC”

    • @DMVAdventures
      @DMVAdventures  Рік тому +3

      Hiking day trips are up to 1.5 hours away. If it fits in there, it is “near”. A restaurant in same location would be “really really far from DC”

      I go up to slightly over 2 hours for SNP day trips, otherwise do overnighters of one or two days depending on the area activities. Works out good.

    Last time I went up there I was rewarded with a crowd of people including a yappy dog, a kid in a stroller screaming his head off, and trash all over the place.
    Might as well have gone to a bus stop.

      Any hike within 1 hour of DC you have to go on a Tuesday at 9am. If you go on a weekend you'll have crowds of people who can barely walk trying to hike.

    Beautiful. However, the urban and mundane club music prevents me from the proper state of mind you'd hope to find in the natural world, away from it all.
