I love seeing these "messy" sketchbooks. When I watch sketchbooks tours where the art is so nice and tidy I get kind of discouraged to use my own because I'm not on the same level and I feel like I don't want to ruin my sketchbook with "bad" art. I tend to forget that it's not a book of art I'm creating and this was a good reminder that a sketchbook is a great place to try new different things. Loved it, great work!
I totally get that. I plan on sharing more sketchbooks in the future that aren’t so tidy. I realised that I personally love seeing all the work an artist does and so I shouldn’t be afraid to show it myself.
I think it's fascinating to see how artists use their sketchbooks. In some tours I've seen, they're more what I'd call Books of Art, where most if not all pages are frame-worthy finished art works. Much more interesting to see working sketchbooks like yours, where the artist is actually taking visual notes or actively studying something, exploring and taking risks. It encourages me to not view my own sketchbooks as "books of art" and more like working tools. Thank you for sharing yours! I just bought DS Lavender myself and I've immediately found it indispensable. I love it too. And DS Sodalite as well! That mineral violet looks wonderful.

Hi, Sarah. That was a really good video to watch! What a lovely mixture of 'sketching'! Persuading folk that sketchbooks are for fun and experimenting is sooo hard, and yours is a brilliant example of the principle of *sketch* book. The whole 'tour' was good, but the two that stood out for me from the book were the painting of your paint box and swatches, and the glorious, granulating 'abstract' underneath the Hobbit House. I've saved the video to one of my folders, and hope to find a space to show it to my students to back up my own encouragement to use their *sketch* book!

I was surprised you used such an expensive sketchbook for swatches. I’m yet to try their books but the paper looks very good. I loved the 2 field-scapes on one page.
It’s better to practice on the same paper you intend to use for final pieces or as similar as possible. Watercolour acts completely different on different paper.
I love the trees! I need to get myself out and about to give the colours and textures a go! Beautiful work Sarah! 💚 I messy Sketchbook is the best sketchbook!
Is this the Fabriano paper? I was making dinner and this was on, and I dropped everything lol. So so inspiring , Sarah, and it cracks me up how casual you are about your greatness 😄 I did take some of your skillshare classes, too, and really enjoyed them. The one with the canyons was my favourite and I learned so much about painting rocks.
I would much rather see a realistic sketchbook than a ' perfect ' sketchbook! My sketchbook is only legible to me, I think it's important to use your sketchbook to explore 😊
Hmmm I definitely had a problem with their texture at first. I like fabriano artistico 300lb cold press. I actually avoided using the etchr sketchbooks for a long time. (They look really premium) Something about it being too precious so I took all 3 I had. Tore them out of the covers. Drilled holes. used binder note card rings and made a franken sketchbook that for some reason I prefer now lol
Sarah you are soooo talented. I enjoyed watching this through. I’m recently getting back into watercolor. I actually bought that Shire set after watching you teehee. Such gorgeous pages. Would you recommend that Etchr book then? I’ve been eyeing it because I really want a good quality sketchbook to just play around in, but wasn’t sure if that was worth the price for someone getting back into it, but I know paper is important when it comes to watercolor too.
Good to know I'm not the only human awake at 4.30 am( my time in my country) I truly enjoy these sketch book reviews, they've like watching art thoughts come alive on paper, plus I think alot of artist love to swatch out colors mixes it's our inner child artist that comes out I think it reminds me of elementary school art classes with the big paper rolls ... I was just wondering do you ever get overwhelmed with your supply choices or do you wake up in am and say I'm going to use gauche today? watercolor acrylic? or ink??? I saw your shire video and also fell in love with schmicke graundulation sets, as those types of granulation paints I found out I gravitated to when I was pursching colors when I set up my palette I purchase quite a few from Daniel Smith I was quite surprised when doing my swatches... I can only find one art store out west in usa that carrys the sets schmicke sets so I'm just waiting to see if the bigger art stores on line in usa starts carrying them by the summer... Is it still possible to buy your art book you were doing during a fund me challenge to raise money for to start it off????..many art blessings...mikelle art mom👩🎨✍🎨
Swatching is art I've been told...lol....theres alotvofvart pieces that are for sale that are swatching inspired ,I find i gravitated towards looking at them and really studing the color placement order the artist did for their art piece, I'm probably a odd duck but my eye likes it it's like when I go to the hardware stores I always get drawn even tho I dont need paint to the swatches that are label together on wall...I'll admit I do grab a few for future wall purchase just in case..lol many art blessing To you today....mikelle art mom👩🎨✍🎨
Beautiful paintings and experimenting. I love doing swatches but feel reluctant to use good quality paper for them, feels like "wasting". A question about the paper - Have you also tried the hot press version? I am wondering if that will be less textured and preferable to those of us who don't like a lot of texture. I usually use cold press Fabriano but not tried this one yet. Do you recommend one over the other for landscape paintings? Thanks much!
sketchbooks are supposed to be messy and full of stuff only the artist can understand, its nice seeing one like that 😀 yeah pretty sketchbooks are nice too, but put way too much pressure on a person to create something almost finished and be visually pleasing to other people

I love the trees! I need to get myself out and about to give the colours and textures a go! Beautiful work Sarah! 💚 I messy Sketchbook is the best sketchbook!
YAY TREES!
@@SarahBurnsStudio haha! Trees are the best!
I really enjoyed seeing all the swatches!
Yes Lovely video, really interesting. Looking forward to your granulating palette video, I’ve just started collecting these paints
They are soooooo gorgeous!
I enjoyed this look forward to seeing your videos thanks for sharing sis
Love love LOVE your videos Always!!!!!🤩
Very inspiring I would love to see more
I learn so much from you. Thanks for this.
Thank you!! I think they use Fabriano paper
Your sketchbook is very good and wonderful
I would much rather see a realistic sketchbook than a ' perfect ' sketchbook! My sketchbook is only legible to me, I think it's important to use your sketchbook to explore 😊
Love this. I am afraid to mess up in my sketchbook!
That's the one place you shouldn't feel scared! Don't show it to anyone, do it just for you and remember each sketch is a learning opportunity.
wonderful sharing..... greetings
Seeing all the lovely beach paintings... would you consider making a video about painting skies in watercolour? :-)
I have a long class about that on Skillshare. But yes skies might appear in future videos 😄
@@SarahBurnsStudio nice :D
Thank you so much for sharing
Hmmm I definitely had a problem with their texture at first. I like fabriano artistico 300lb cold press. I actually avoided using the etchr sketchbooks for a long time. (They look really premium) Something about it being too precious so I took all 3 I had. Tore them out of the covers. Drilled holes. used binder note card rings and made a franken sketchbook that for some reason I prefer now lol
Interesting!
Love it ❤
Sarah you are soooo talented.
Absolutely recommend it! If you see my link for Jackson’s they are having a sale!
I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless of how messy it is!
@@SarahBurnsStudio art is never messy it's like life it's just a complication of colors in all directions👩🎨✍🎨mikelle art mom
My mind heard "Thank you all for swatching"
Let's go with that!
But anyway, that violet at 16.42 just looks amazing! and handy for painting shadows!
Yes 💙
Beautiful paintings and experimenting. I love doing swatches but feel reluctant to use good quality paper for them, feels like "wasting". A question about the paper - Have you also tried the hot press version? I am wondering if that will be less textured and preferable to those of us who don't like a lot of texture. I usually use cold press Fabriano but not tried this one yet. Do you recommend one over the other for landscape paintings? Thanks much!
Their hot press is very smooth, just a tiny bit of tooth. But I love texture, the more the merrier 😄
This is a “messy” sketchbook? I think I’ve been doing something wrong all these years 🤣🤣🤣 this is like sketchbook goals right here
Not at all! We all have different ways of working, so keep doing your messy awesome thing!
lol so cute
LOOOOOOVE IT ^.^
sketchbooks are supposed to be messy and full of stuff only the artist can understand, its nice seeing one like that 😀 yeah pretty sketchbooks are nice too, but put way too much pressure on a person to create something almost finished and be visually pleasing to other people
😅👍
👍🏻🙂nice
