The leagues think they can market and advertise gambling 24/7 to all of us and players won’t eventually do it is preposterous. It’s actually sickening the amount of gambling ads we have to listen to in everyday life now.

Exactly bro. I'm sure the ad dollars are good, but what do they think will happen?
Besides, there are a lot of gambling addicts in the world. Watching sports for them is now like an alcoholic going to a bar.

It’s weird to act like all this advertising has no effect on fans and players. All sports content now is shoving these ads down our throats and there’s no way the players don’t notice it either. These companies wouldn’t advertise if it wasn’t effective. Of course that’s why more people are doing it.

Except he's right. What's spectacularly stupid is any league allowing props on given players. It makes it INEVITABLE that some idiot is going to do precisely this. The only hint is the amount of bets placed on a obscure guy.
Now Russillo brings up salary (and it doesn't make sense for a guy making 450k to gamble. But what about blackmail/extortion?

  • @Leo-rg5wy

    What a bizarre take.
1-No one who is talking about the legalization of gambling or huge expansion of betting content/ads is saying DON'T blame the player. It's just "don't ONLY blame the player".
2-Tracking capabilities for the house have been there a long time. What's changed is how openly gambling is being promoted by the leagues and media because everyone, including Ryen and Bill, are getting rich off it.
Gambling should be legal but promoting it like all these leagues are is crazy. It should be like alcohol, weed or cigarettes: legal but no ads allowed.

It’s a take from someone who is getting paid by these industries. The ringer has partnerships with major betting companies. The second he said “gambling is fun for some” and then saying now it’s easier to get caught is basically an open statement that it’s always happened which defies the whole point of sports and watching this content

And if you decided to go and do it anyways and get caught then you wouldn’t expect ppl to deflect and say it’s not 100% your fault. I don’t get why ppl always make excuses for everything these days. Instead of the analogy of the sign at the grand canyon or whatever, I think it's way more apt to say it's like having an open bar at work (while constantly being subjected to ads about how good it feels to drink). Yeah, not everyone's an alcoholic, but are you expecting NOBODY is going to abuse it? That's delusional.
And saying "well one guy made a stupid choice", sure, that's true, but it impacts the competitive integrity of the entire game. If the fans can't believe in that, everything collapses. And you know who makes LESS than Jontay Porter? Referees. Scorekeepers. Equipment managers or whoever who might be tempted to sell some tips. This is so much bigger than one guy's mistake and pretending like it is isn't doing anyone any favors except the gambling companies.

There is a difference between I bet you 100 bucks I can beat you at bowling or golf or even a video game (random dumb shit you're doing ever day anyway) and a gambling institution more specifically a Sports betting institution. I don't think players (or staff) in any sports should be gambling on any professional sport as it's far too tempting to want to make exceptions to the rules.

Prop bets dehumanize players and turn them into an object (gambling) fans love or hate depending on performance. Honestly not sure what that means in the long run, but I'm sure players are getting sick of jeers like, "Just one more assist!". As a fan of sports who doesn't gamble, I haven't appreciated this onslaught of player gambling stories in the last 5 years.
I Totally understand why youtube content creators and podcasters take the advertising money from gambling companies - it's EZ $$$ for an established sports analyst, and doesn't come with the RNG % risk. In Nevada they call gambling the 'stupid tax' - Gambling deserves a nickname that encapsulates emerging nature in this brave new world from coast to coast.

As a Swede it surprises me that anyone that far away would be interested in gambling on teams I would barely know exists. Clearly gamblers have too much money they're prepared to give away...

The NBA has nobody to blame but themselves. They made this bed they gotta lay in it. Idc What Jontay Porter did, its wrong but nobody would feel inclined to do it if every ad, commercial and sponsorship wasnt sports betting. Why NBA or anyone for that matter is acting surprised that there are players going to be dumb enough to indulge in the very thing these major sports leagues are openly and shamelessly promoting is beyond me. Jontay is responsible for his own actions, but these Major sports leagues need to get ahead of this before it gets worse. It doesnt matter how much there is to be made from the sponsorships (its a business so I understand), the integrity of the game is at risk, period. This looks bad for the NBA no matter how you slice it, because they're sulking in the irony.

It wouldn't necessarily matter if he was getting rebounds or not if that wasn't the prop bet that the money was on. He only has to fail in the category that people have agreed to bet on if it turns out to be true. There's no way that this could have happened without his participation. I'm sure he's going to claim that he may have told somebody that he wasn't feeling well but I believe that it goes past that. If you've seen him online then you would know that is really into money making schemes. This was not a good one.

What a awful fkn take, and its not just Ryen. Weird how all the media guys are all rowing the same way on this one
To think these methods of tracking didnt exist just a few years ago is laughable, & to sit there and see the exponential rise is players getting busted gambling & claim it isn't alarming is a joke
Did ohtani pay his friends debt or was the money stolen? We've head both and it doesnt add up
Jontay is a fringe NBA player, why is he not playing through a simple illness? And how come it's the games he's seeing an increase in his under props that he so happens to be leaving? Its suspicious, and calling out fans for questioning something suspicious is in itself suspicious
But of course Ryen, Cowherd, MiddleKauff, Wright etc,. Are all sponsored by different gambling companies

When you look at how the NBA swept the Donaghy scandal under the rug, you reap what you sow. It is absolutely foolish to embrace the gambling revenue without knowing that this was inevitable. How does the NBA regain some semblance of integrity with this kind of incident, the discrepancy of Laker free throws, and Lebron's PED allegations?
